[arr] Re: THE RAHMAN TODAY

2010-08-15 Thread indmovbuff

Kishore,

I remember you objecting strongly to a post I made about Aisha's music and how
it was not appropriate to compare anything or anyone to AR's music which I
wasn't doing in the first place. only recommending a non-arr album I liked
which does not in any way imply that I like Amit more than AR etc.

But this accusation of yours- accusing Rahman of using "arrangers" to do the
BGM is just way off the line, man. Way below the belt. Just re-read what you
wrote and think how AR would feel if someone accused him of using someone else
to do the BGM but take credit for it entirely like when he won Best Background
score at Filmfare. I hope you understand the significance of your accusation.

[arr] Re: best choreographed song ?

2010-08-09 Thread indmovbuff

Vimal, whilst I like Shankar's stuff I till think Mani tops him for reasons you
mentioned : his songs are a piece of art. No need for grandeur sets or exotic
locations. Alaipayuthey is also another example. So is Roja. And Thiruda
Thiruda like many others mentioned on this thread. Loved Thee thee and
Chandralekha. Also loved Behene De (Usure Pohuthey) in Raavan. Hey goodbye
nanba from AE. And the mother of all choreography- Dil Se. Classy stuff -these
are the type of songs that you listen to immediately remember the way it was
shot. I love Mani's style. :) Shankar does well too but I am not much of big
sets grand locations person. I like it simple and sweet.

[arr] Loved Raavan and Raavanan!!! (the former a tad bit more)

2010-06-19 Thread indmovbuff
I am unable to understand all the negativity surrounding the movie. I went in
without reading a single review of the movie and thoroughly enjoyed both
versions today.

Started off with the Tamil version and was blown away by Vikram. Prithviraj
didn't have much to do just like how Vikram's Dev had little to do in Raavan. I
have to apologise for drawing comparisons but just can't keep off it- felt
Vikram as Veera was far superior to AB and Beera. There was more sexual tension
between Aishwarya and Vikram than AB and the same, I felt. More chemistry
(oddly given that the latter are real life couples). Vikram was a lot more
controlled and real as Veera than AB (eg the scene where Ragini is shown to
bepraying to Lord Vishnu, the Ranjha Ranjha sequence). Loved how Keda Kari and
Kata Kata shaped up in the movie- very colourful and pretty. Behne De was a
class act. Didn't expect it to be at the beginning of the movie. Priyamani's
role in both versions was gripping. Sanjeevani was slightly more comical in
Raavanan, I felt. For eg when he comes to see Beera as the messenger, he says
to him : "Don't misunderstand me, I am in his (ie Dev's) party but my vote is
for you". Perhaps there were similar dialogues in the hindi version but it
didn't get through the subtitles. Also was lovely to see Prabhu and Karthik
sharing screen space in another Mani Ratnam movie. Felt Prabhu's casting was
apt- especially since he appears to be the less of a warrior and more of a
cook!Aishwarya to have gone through some of those stunts twice over - gosh!

The worst of it: the scene where Ragini jumps off the clip. It's very
artificial and clearly CG has been used for that particular shot. It's such a
key moment in the movie- it's when Beera falls for her. I think it was shot
very poorly.
The best of it: Vikram (for me) in the climax and the scenes leading to it.
More importantly, Ja Re (Naan varuvene) - just absolutely blow-you-away kind of
material. How does AR do it? sigh.

Apart from the movie being a visual treat, I enjoyed what we were given in
terms of the plot. It led to some interesting questions (not necessarily with
defined answers, in true Mani style) which for me was the beauty of the movie.
Honestly disappointed that people found it shallow and boring. Considering all
the mindless cinema we've had in the recent past, I loved what we got in this
movie. I would recommend the Tamil Raavanan to those who've watched the Hindi
version to see how Vikram's Veera sheds a subtle yet significant light to
Raavan(an).

The following were some questions posted by a group member on why the film
didn't work for him/her. Here's my attempt to answer these questions(just a
personal view) so that you could also perhaps see it from another perspective.

1) The movie is not boring, but its not engaging.
The screenplay for me worked in most parts- I liked that Priyamani's track came
in after the interval. And then things leading up to her death were all key
moments for the movie- very nicely filmed, I felt.

2) Its very illogical (complete baseless scenes)
for example...
3) why aishwarya is in a boat, where she is going? (baseless)
Thought it fit well- she is an artist and often artists get inspired by nature.
That landscape was breathtaking enough for even anyone with little interest in
arts to get inspired and feel good about themselves. Note how she was listening
to a song on her CD player when she was on that boat - I think she was looking
for inspiration to choreograph for the song for her students?

4) why there were no people around beera in the climax scene (actual climax
when dev chased his place by using ragini)
I think in most parts of the movie (especially before the interval) we see that
Beera/Veera is hardly "accompanied" by his men or rather does not require
protection- he is his own protector. Also, it was Dev's plan. He wanted Beera
on his own and what better way to get him down on his own than sending the
woman he loved, to call for him. That was enough for Beera to let his defences
down- she was his weakness and Dev played to it cunningly.

5) when beera has such huge tactics and people around, why he didnt abduct dev
directly, when he was in the forest. atleast when dev kills his brother, he
goes to dev's camp, explodes everything. this stunt scene was utter waste.
people just come before the camera to be killed by dev's gun (stupid
picturization, really!)

I agree- it could have been shot better. As for the reason though- I think the
impression we are given of Beera is that he's their strength- no weapons, no
ammunition, just Beera. The only time they were able to "attack" Dev's
entourage was with sugar! That was their weapon. There was no way they were
going to attack him without any ammunition- that would be disastrous given that
Dev and co were much stronger with guns and bombs- the only place they could
get these from was off Dev's base/police camp which was

Rawat,

you say
"None of his dozens of tamil films got Mani a name and repute that a
 single Dil Se earned him."

His Nayagan was India's entry to the Oscars in 1987! That was 23 years ago. If
that wasn't recognition then his other movies have also been been critically
acclaimed not just in India but in some of the most reputed media in the west
too, well before Dil Se. TIME magazine always review Mani's movies. Always.

Perhaps you have only confined yourself to Hindi films in India. No wonder Mani
and AR constantly campaign against the term Bollwood because Indian films are
much more than that.Sadly, the "Bollywood" audience is completely oblivious to
some brilliant movies from other industries in India. Wake up and smell the
coffee, Rawat bhai.

Thanks for that Gomzy! But Kata Kata is not on Vikram-Ash but will be on
Priyamani because the booklet has Abhi dancingwith dhols and the from in the

backshot of the bride and it fits her height well. Does the lyrics imply
otherwise?

[arr] CD Booklet and lyrics

The booklet seems to suggest that Khilli re will be pictured on Vikram and Ash
(three very interesting stills there including the ones with ARB dancing- the
ones that have been on the internet for a long time now). Kata Kata looks big
too in keeping with the articles regarding 500+ dancers etc. It looks like it's
Raavan's sister(Surpanakha played by Priyamani)'s wedding. Colourful. Behene de
has the Bachchans - extremely interesting stills. Apparently, Bollywood Hungama
have the video of the song already and will put it up on their website in the
coming days. Ranjha Ranjha with the Bachchans again. Thok de and Beera is with
AB only.

The booklet is an absolute treat. How I wish I could understand the lyrics. Can
some kid soul please give a gist as to what each song is trying to convey?
Especially Behene De. Would be very grateful!

slightly unwarranted at this point , given that the teaser was only 30 seconds

the conclusion that it was indeed an inspiration - just 30 seconds of a song
and you were certain. Patience my friend. It will be out soon. And then we can

Looks like Bollywood Hungama do have a deal with Tips (release of track list,
logo at the end of the teaser etc). so we may have the tracks for online
streaming at some point after the official release (or if luckyon the same day
of the release). So the wait for the CD will not be as torturous as it would be
otherwise!

this one AB is simply amazing. It's got Mani-ARR combo written all over it.

[arr] Re: Official video of VTV audio release (Magical unplugged versions)

2010-01-17 Thread indmovbuff

Sanjay,

My reply to Rivjot is relevant here so will paste it.

Rivjot, I apologise for having to make you write what you called an unpleasent
e-mail and hence spoiling your mood. That was not my intention. I understand
that there are shortcomings in the way the current music industry functions and
we all know that it is a global problem. However, I think it's very easy to
point fingers.

I currently do not live in an area/county in which I have access to tamil
music, let alone Indian music. I have gone through what you have as well - the
painful wait and trust me, I know the feeling. You know what I do now? I get my
neice to buy me a CD when she gets her copy in India, and then she burns my CD
and e-mails the mp3s to me. I am sure we all have some trustworthy
friends/family who have access to instant markets and this is just one option.
That way my thirst for wanting to listen to the music within hours of its
release is taken care of and I get my copy of the CD by post in 5-10 days time.
I get the added satisfaction of not having fed the pirates- that feeling just
makes every soundtrack even more special for me. That's the least I can do for
Rahman and the brilliant team behind his music. Where there's a will, there's a
way.

I strongly condemn piracy. It is stealing, although we don't like to admit to
it. And we are not only just stealing music but we are also stealing people's
livelihood. That's wrong. Just my two cents worth.

2009-09-24 Thread indmovbuff
Chord, you really puzzle me with such posts. 90% of your posts are all praise
for Rahman's music and then occasionally you have these shockers. I remember
one in which you implied that rahman didn't deserve a Filmfare for Guru and
that filmfare were biased towards him. This one implies that you won't be
disappointed if Pritam wins best music for Tum Mile, a soundtrack you haven't
still even given a listen to. You obviously have a right to your opinion but
some of your posts (amongst some gems) puzzles me about your view on Rahman's
music. Personally, I haven't listened to anything better than Delhi 6 this year
and I think Rahman should win for this, hands down. I will be disappointed (and
not insecure)as Rahman fan and more importantly a fan of good music, if he
doesn't. DevD comes a good second in the race. I am not denying Tum Mile a
place in the top 5 soundtracks so far this year. It's good and I've taken to
Pritam's music in the recent past (despite all the plagiarism) but I m not
going to say I'd be happy if it wins an award over a Delhi 6 or a DevD or even
a Kaminey. And no, this has nothing to do with insecurity.

P.S: Sorry about the rant, but you do genuinely puzzle me with such posts.

I posted another one with regards to this but it hasn't got through.
I'd remembered that i'd forgotten to mention this really nice BGM in
the movie. The one that is played on their wedding night and later when
Jodha shows her caligraphy to Akbar. This piece is really very
beautiful. Lot of play in it.
There is also the one similar to the Roja Bgm (the one with the
terrorit background). Only the first bit is played whenever Akbar is
portrayed to be angry.

For me it works big time, mainly because of the beautiful portrayal
of the romance between Akbar and Jodha. I am a bit puzzled as to why
the chemistry between these two (Hrithik-Ash ) hasn't been taken
seriously in the past. The way they both emote is very soulful and
real. The romance in the story is so beautiful and is in no way a
comparison to the recent cheap stuff we get in Indian cinema. If this
film doesn't work in the box office, I would be seriously concerned
about the mentality of Indian movie goers! Yes it's a bit too long
but it's one of those movies you wish you could see more and more of.
A few points

[SOME SPOILERS BELOW]

1) The sets are lovely and more importantly the costumes look so very
grand and beautiful. The jewellery too!Not only Ash's but even
Hrithik's.
2) Her two conditions before marriage : was a bit puzzled as to why
she put them across to him. Was it because she was hoping that he'd
reject the marriage? But then in the previous scene she seems to
suggest to her mother that the wedding needs to go ahead by
acknowledging the fact that it will be in the best interest of her
ppl and that it's worth the 'sacrifice'.
3) Khwaja mere Khwaja is a song based entirely (or at least 90%) on
the Sufi singers (focussing many a times on their faces). It is a
spiritual song where towards the end, the sufi singers get into a
(spiritual) trans and are joined in the same by Akbar. Interestingly,
the sufi singers consisted of at least 3 pairs of twins! Is that part
of the culture or was it just part of Gowarikar's creativity? It was
an emotional journey, this song, especially the end.
4)Mann mohana: another spiritual song pictured mainly on Ash. It
again comes in two parts and is not a 5min chunk. When Akbar is
defending his move after marrying Jodha to his ministers in the
courtyard, this chant is heard and he is mesmerized immediately. He
loses himself to the chant and unknowingly walks towards the source
of the chant mesmerized by it, forgetting that he was in the middle
of addressing his court. this scene goes hand in hand with the scene
at the end of the sufi song, giving us Akbar's spiritual dimension.
5) Jasn-e-bahaara : came in parts. It wasn't a 5 min chunk. It was
split (in RangDeB style) but nevertheless so very apt. showing how
the relationship between jodha and akbar grows (just like in the
promos). Loved it!This is my fav tune in the sound track and still is
after watching the picturisation.
6)Azeem o shan- it was very grand. Looks like a lot of effort went
into the song. Again, this song comes with some dialogues.
7) in lam ho ke damon: this song came after my fav scene in the
movie. The bit where Jodha writes Akabar's full name as part of her
first calligraphy lesson and asks Akbar to read it. His reply to her
and her reaction (in a split second )- a mixture of disappointment
and deep affection) to his confession. Superb! This is followed by a
scene where they both confess their feelings to each other and breaks
into In lam ho ke damon. Another very emotional and beautiful song
portraying the feelings between the emperor and his empress. Just
lovely. My second pick of the album!
8) lot has been a written already abt the kitchen scene so I won't
dwell into it- but again one of my fav scenes in the movie. if i
remember well, i think it ended with a jashn -e-bahaara bgm.
9) the sword fight between jodha and akbar had quite a nice bgm
(minus the sword clashing sounds)
10) to be honest, I am going to watch it again .this time try and
focus on the bgms in the movie. I hope at least this time, the movie
won't distract me from trying to engross in the music! ;)

There were so many great scenes in the movie. Another example is the
one before the interval with Akbar confronting Jodha and asking her
to leave but I won't get into them as this is not a review. Just my
personal opinion of the movie and i felt i needed to share it with
you guys. All in all, it's a LOVELY movie with some really great
performances from the lead artists and the supporting cast.I never
liked Hrithik's emotional scenes in any of his previous movies.
thought he used to overact by trying to bring in some sort of
shuddering-shivering effect (!) but as Akbar he's just PERFECT! I
can't think of anyone else who could play Akbar with such confidence,
charm and power. Aishwarya emotes so very well with her eyes in this
movie more than in any of her previous movies (with Iruvar coming a
close second). Very graceful, with the right emotions in the right
scenes. Supporting cast is just as good. Sujamal, Maham Anga are my
pick. I loved every song in the movie. No disappointment at all as to
how they were portrayed. One has to remember that the music was made
truly for the movie. All those guys who bashed the music when it
released, failed to realise that you can't always have an RDB or a
Rangeela or even a Taal or something that rahman did in the 90s. W

Just remembered something on the BGMs.I can't believe I forgot to
menion this in my previous mail. There is a really lovely BGM just
after the wedding has been decided. The same is repeated in the wedding
night scene. And bits of it is used later for the Jodha Akbar playful
scenes. It's lovely! Also, a Roja bgm (the one with the terrorist
backdrop) comes in at some points. Only the first bit of it though.
