Re: [arr] Are you for or against ARR redoing CWG theme song

2010-09-06 Thread RAMESH b.j KRISHNAN
Well Said!

I too had the same thought as you expressed in these below lines.

But the situation with CWG is totally unclear. Some wanted the song to
have an English version, some wanted a more Indianized tune. Some wanted
it to be soulful, some wants it to be of high tempo. With all these
different views, what chances are there that the new version will satisy
all parties (or any parties) concerned? In my opinion, redoing the song
is pointless and will result in nothing more than a wild-goose chase.

We have got a gang of people who get popular by finding mistakes. The people
who criticized CWG theme has got their name scrolling scrolling in atleast any
1 news channel. Poor Critics... We cannot help it out guys.

However, if it is a commissioned artist, say, you hire a painter to do

draw your mom's or dad's portrait, or yourself's, and what he draws

you don't like, you don't think that his portrait is expressing the

qualities you would like to see on the pic face of your mom or dad, or

on your own pic face. Of course, it is because you never briefed him

properly beforehand what feel or expression you wanted in the

portrait. But, whatever the history, if you don't like the portrait,

you would rather expect the artist to touch it up, OR, you would tear

off that painting, or dump that somewhere even after paying the artist

full money, and you would commission some other artist and on and on,

unless you get what you want. Customer is the king.

But whatever improvements or changes needed would have been conveyed during the
process of making the art and not after the final product has been given to
you, am I right? Likewise the customer in this case i.e. the Government has
approved of the song prior to the release. So it's ridiculous to turn around
and ask ARR to redo his song now, simply because someone else (Opposition,
media) doesn't seem to like it. The act not only insults ARR as the composer
but would also makes us to question the Government's judgment in approving the
song in the first place.

sorry for repeating it 3rd time, but ARR has retouched his work

previously as per directors' requirements. Ranjha Ranjha has a film

version that was not in the CDs, chiggy wiggy has got some indian

voice version when some copyright issue had come up from Kylie's

contract, I guess. Palanhare of lagaan has a film version had

different voice than the CD version. Gopala of humse has muqabla has a

different lyrics in film version (hindi) than in the cassettes.

The songs that were mentioned by your goodself had changes only as far as the
singers or lyrics are concerned, not the tune itself. In that sense, the above
changes cannot be categorised as ARR has retouched his work.

On the other hand, Ranjha Ranjha's situation was totally different. The
original tune was there in the film (at least it was there in the Tamil
version). An additional and different version of the song (the pathos number)
was composed only to accomodate the situation of the film. No one knows whose
idea it was- it could be ARR's or Mani's, but one thing was clear- the tune was
definitely not composed to replace the original number.

The other aspect is, Jai Ho's pussycat version might have gone more

popular in foreign countries just because it was in a language they

could understand. So, what if some other MD releases a remix version

of CWG theme that gets more popular than ARR's original, say Himesh or

Anu Malik or Pritam releases a remix CWG? Then, wouldn't it be a

further war among skills of both the MDs? ARR's skills are undisputed,

so it will be bad seeing some other MD of lesser skills getting

prominence over him.

I very sure that we would not be facing a situation where Anu Malik or Himesh
releases a remix of CWG in near future. Not when ARR himself is particular
about the copyright of his songs. In fact, Jai Ho's pussycat version was
possible because ARR had the rights of the song and he agreed for the
collaboration. And there was also a purpose for new version- ARR particularly
wanted to new version to reach out to the western market and hence the
collaboration.

But the situation with CWG is totally unclear. Some wanted the song to have an
English version, some wanted a more Indianized tune. Some wanted it to be
soulful, some wants it to be of high tempo. With all these different views,
what chances are there that the new version will satisy all parties (or any
parties) concerned? In my opinion, redoing the song is pointless and will
result in nothing more than a wild-goose chase.

[arr] Raavanan Review

2010-06-18 Thread prakash krishnan
http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/tamil/review/10848.html

Raavanan - Ten Faced Persona
IndiaGlitz [Friday, June 18, 2010]
Mani Ratnam returns to spread magic (or a blunder, as this review progresses)
with his ‘Raavanan’ after a splendid show in the form of ‘Guru’. Well lets be
positive to some extent now, his team is world class, with Santosh Sivan behind
the lens, Srikar Prasad on the editor’s table and A R Rahman handling the music
and besides that the stellar star cast! The movie looked like a bouquet of
flowers but only the fragrance seemed to fade!
Now moral of the story – Never go by hype! Wondering why we started with the
moral so soon, well that is what ‘Raavanan’ is all about! It is a celluloid
adaptation of ‘Ramayana’ written by sage Valmiki (and interestingly, no name is
displayed for ‘the story’ when the titles are showed.) with modern publicity
techniques that will attract the audience. Let’s get to the analysis part and
wrap this review up as soon as possible, because the movie is just above 2
hours. And about wrapping it soon, anyone among the audience will tell you to
get out of the hall as soon as possible once the movie is over!
Mani Ratnam, the master of creating art on celluloid has possibly over worked
to make a disappointment! He is class apart no doubt but his class on screen is
visible only in parts. He has delicately portrayed bits and pieces of modern
day Ramayana. Well nothing offending here but Ramayana is a story that is
imbibed in to our lives from childhood, seems like this movie was shot to
associate every scene with the happenings in the holy epic.
Characterisation and Performances
Suhasini Maniratnam pens the dialogues of the movie. Her dialogues are
intelligent, credible and most importantly, conveying information. Characters
and their strengths are informed through these wonderful dialogues. The
homework seems to have been done well. Mani Ratnam has sketched his characters
amazingly. Every character has a purpose and every actor behind the character
has been rightly cast. . Leave alone the fact he was inspired from Ramayana but
here in this, the Raavanan is the hero. The title role is played by Vikram
(like you didn’t know). He is Veera alias Veeraiah. A tribal leader who’s
fighting for their rights. He is strong, genuine and loyal to his tribe. Even
other characteristics of his are mentioned through an enquiry scene where the
police talk to the tribals to find out what kind of a person this Veera is.
Vikram’s performance is simply electric.
The next in line is Prithvi Raj, who’s the dynamic Superintendent of Police. He
is oozing with confidence as an actor and his chemistry with Aishwarya Rai
Bachchan is good enough on screen. He makes it quite obvious as being the Rama
in this story. So you know the strings attached.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s characterization is simple. She is a loving wife who
has been abducted (did we leak the story now?) and her expressions from thereon
are simply amazing. She is beautiful on screen (sure is) and has come out with
a noticeably extraordinary performance. Only a certain part of the credit goes
to her, the rest goes to Mani for getting the best out of her.
The other supporting characters like Karthik( apparently Hanuman) as a forest
officer, Prabhu as Vikram’s older brother, Munna as Vikram’s younger brother
and others are impressively handled characters. The director has made sure all
the characters receive the deserved importance. Mani Ratnam is the master
unarguably; he has made sure the actors have their presence felt on screen.
At this predicament of the review, Priya Mani as Vikram’s step sister has done
a commendable job. Her character as a bold sister to the strong brother is much
appreciable. Her performance will definitely be applauded and as she’s playing
the same role in the Hindi version, she has made an excellent start in her
Bollywood journey.
Technicalysis
Technically speaking, Editor Srikar Prasad has sharp scissors. The screenplay
in the first half, though nothing has been conveyed and is an utter waste of
film reels, his editing is near precision. Stunts and bomb work by Peter Heines
and Shyam Kaushal deserve appreciation and so is art director Sameer’s work,
given the fact that most of the movie was shot in and around water. The tribal
village, the police camp, a bridge and a marriage set were simply amazing and
he would be one technician to make note of. The fight on the bridge just before
the climax is an edge-of-the-seat scene that has been well shot and well
directed.
But there is one man who will be applauded for his work (perhaps the only
respite in the movie) is Santosh Sivan and his camera work! Mani’s movies
always have natural lighting and Santosh has used it to good effect. Green
pastures, water falls, rivers, trees, and all that nature can offer in a forest
are radiantly shown. Hats of Santosh, you’ve done a splendid job!

Lovely evening, very well planned, and very well organised ... The format of

beautiful forest set on the stage was also similar! :)

Actor Karthik and Priya Mani were MCs for the evening. Actors Prithviraj,
Prabhu, Vikram were called on to the stage, one by one, separated by
performances..

Singer Karthik's Usurey Pogudhey was the first... Awesome
performance singer Karthik and Dr Narayan with
live strings (Srinivasa Moorthy sir conducted it)...

The second performance was dance by Vikram and co for Kodu potta song...
The third one was bigger!! AR and Vairamuthu came up to the stage for the
unreleased song Naan Varuvaen! AR mentioned that this was done after all
songs were closed, a very late idea struck them, which led to creation of this
song. He also mentioned that this song is used during an important part of the
movie...

Kalvarey was the only full song that was screened therehalf of Kodu potta
was shown, and a montage of clips of the movie was shown with usurey pogudhey
and Veera as the background. And the trailer was also screened...
I loved the way Kalvarey was picturised... only Mani sir can do it! So simple,
but elegant Most part of the song is shot in a house - on the porch, in
the kitchen, in the bedroom, as ash is shown dancing throughout moving about
the house along with Prithviraj!

My expectations are raising higher and higher! Cant wait for the movie

Guys, please, please form a voice, a lobby to get at least those 2 songs on
later CDs.Ranjha Ranjha Richa Sharma version (which may be the unplugged
version that Bollywood Hungama previously had on their website) and the ARR

Could we please organize a petition, a voice, that we realy, really want
these songs to be included in all 3 language version CDs in later batches?
 PLEASE

I really feel strongly about this. If enough of us express a strong desire

If music were to be a religion in India, A R Rahman would undoubtedly be

God. In a way, it would be sacrilegious to critique Rahman's music.

Especially if you are a die-hard fan.

Especially if he's released an album after six months. And especially if he

has teamed up with Gulzar and Mani Ratnam, a partnership, that in the past,

has given gems like Dil Se, Bombay and Roja.

But in the case of Raavan, blasphemy isn't really a choice.

Rahman's genius lies in the unpredictability of his struc- tures and the

multi-layered depth that he gives a song, each of which unravels in

  subsequent hearings.

Though, on its face, the music of Raavan is distinc- tive it has a `nukad

naatak' type theatrical feel to it but on repeated hearing, the new layers

you uncover are reminiscent of older Rahman songs you've heard before. Soft

and ethereal to begin with, `Behene de' builds in momentum and ends up

resembling Dil Se's `Satrangi re'. `Thok de killi', with its frenetic pace

and war cry-like theme, is a `Dhakka laga bukka' (Yuva) meets `Chale chalo'

(Lagaan) towards the end. `Ranjha ranjha' sounds, in parts, like a better-

arranged version of Blue's `Yaar mila tha'. `Khilli re', though thematically

very different, is reminiscent of Lagaan's `O paalan hare'.

`Beera' stands tall over the other songs, and is one of the best-arranged,

and most addictive songs this year, with a melodious chant that you won't be

able to stop humming for a while. Buy the album for `Beera', Gulzar's

evocative lyrics and for Rahman's inspired use of ethnic Indian instruments,

  but don't expect a Roja.

GV croons for AR Rahman

By Moviebuzz  | Wednesday, 28 April , 2010, 12:11

The young, hot and happening music director GV Prakash has sung a song for his
uncle AR Rahman, after a gap of nearly 17 years!
Rahman is composing music for the prestigious Ulaga Tamil Chemozhi Manadu, to
be held by the Tamilnadu Government in June in Coimbatore. Prakash has sung one
of the songs for the album which will be released at the Manadu.
Remember Prakash has last sung under his uncle’s baton for the song Chikku
Bukku, Chikkubukku Raile… from the 1993 film Gentleman, when he was just a kid?
Says a pleased GV Prakash: “I have not sung for anyone after I became a music
director but when Rahman called me to sing under his baton, I was so excited
and honoured. To be frank, I was nervous to sing for the legend himself and I
am sure that I have satisfied the composer”. .

Song Name: Ranjha Ranjha
Film/Album: Raavan
Singer(s): Rekha Bhardwaj, Javed Ali, Anuradha Sriram
Music Director: A R Rahman
Lyricist: Gulzar

Lyrics of Ranjha Ranjha Song-

Ranjha ranjha kardi ve main aape ranjha hoyi
Ranjha ranjha saddo ni mainu heer na aakho koyi
(note: the above two lines are by Bulleh shah)
(I have been chanting the name of Ranjha so much that I myself have
become Ranjha)
(Call me Ranjha, there is nobody with the name Heer here)

Oo ranjha ranjha na kar heere jag badnami hoye
Patti patti jhar jaave par khushboo chup na hoye
(o Heer, don't chant the name of ranjha because it would lead to
infamy in the world)
(the petals of the flowers wither away, but the fragrance doesn't
become silent and is still there in withered petals)

Begunah pakda gaya (yaaro), ishq mein jakda gaya (yaaro)
Aankh ke dosh mein dil (yaaro), bewajah pakda gaya (yaaro)
(the one who was innocent got nabbed, o friends.)
(he got shackled in the love)
(it was a mistake of the eye that it saw the beloved, and it was the
heart that got caught for no reason)

Aankh se hatt ti nahin, arrey hatt ti nahin, arrey hatt ti nahin
Sotey sotey bolta hoon, kabhi bolte bolte sota hoon
Kya jaane kya hota hai, kabhi jalti aag dadolta hoon
Ek baar to aake dekhe woh bhi
(her image doesn't leave my eyes)
(I start to speak while asleep)
(whereas sometimes I fall asleep while talking)
(I don't know what happens to me)
(sometimes I explore burning fire)
(note: I am not knowing the word Dadolta)

Ranjha ranjha kardi ve main aape ranjha hoyi

Jalti raakh laga le maathe lagey to chandan hoye
Ranjha ranjha kardi ve main
Ranjha ranjha kardi ve main aape ranjha hoyi
Ranjha ranjha saddo ni mainu heer na aakho koyi
(get ignited, get burnt, get burnt in the fire of love, by getting
burnt, one becomes a bracelet)
(note: doesn't make sense to me, what he means by kangan hove?)
(by putting the burning ash to the forehead, it will feel cool like
sandalwood)

Waqt katt ta bhi nahin, waqt rukta bhi nahin
Dil hai sajde mein magar, ishq jhukta bhi nahin
Bina tere raatein, arrey raatein kyun lambhi lagti hain
Kabhi tera gussa, kabhi teri baatein kyun achchi lagti hain
Yeh jalte koyle, arrey koyle ab rakhna mushkil hai
(the time doesn't pass, the doesn't even stop)
(the heart is bowing to someone, but the love doesn't even stoop)
(without you, why do the nights appear longer)
(sometimes your anger, sometimes your talk, why do they feel good)
(these burning coals, it has now become difficult to keep them)

Ranjha ranjha kardi ve main aape ranjha hoyi
Jalti raakh laga le maathe lagey to chandan hoye

Chal, chal junoon chalte rahein, tu kahin theher nahin
Dil agar aa bhi gaya, woh tera shehar nahin
Bina tere saansein, arrey saansein kahin khatam na ho jaayein
Sabi teri yaadein, sabi yaadein kahin basam na ho jaayein
Sulagte koyle, arrey koyle ab bujhna mushkil hai

(let us move on together, o my madness, we keep on moving on, you
should not halt anywhere)
(if you heart likes a place, that is still not your destination)
(without you, hope the breaths don't get finished up)
(all your memories, all memories, hope they don't get burnt to ash)
(coals are burning, o coals, it is now difficult to stop burning)

AJ, I am also seeing lot of positive reactions on the net, but there are
also negative remarks...the fact i am unable to digest is that there is no
instantly hummable tune in this album. Kata Kata had huge expectations from
me, but this song sounds to me like a fun song with lot of variations in
beat and singing. the structure and variation being changed in AR's songs is
seen nowadays a lot. It irritates the listener and makes him think that
where the song is going. Beera is good but short. lot of beera beera
repetitions, they could have made the song longer with 2 stanzas. I have bn
following ARR form 92 so i am used to this initial not liking, and then
getting impressed. But still, I feel this album is a disappointment. It
makes me wonder whether is this the combination which gave Vellai pookal,
pachai nirame, Dilse, Bombay, thiruda thiruda to the world.

I respect your initial impressions, but please give it some time and try to
 avoid conclusive statements for now.

This album is not going to be liked by everyone. You're right, the song
melodies and structures for the most part are complex and not
straightforward, which may not be everyone's preference.

Some pretty extreme first impressions I'm seeing on the net...but, most
comments are positive and many saying it's one of ARR's finest works.

will like it with more hearings. Very Average score by ARR for a Mani movie.
Expected a lot out of this. This may be the weakest of all ARR-Mani (weaker

 Friends,

It is that time when a new album from our boss is releasing. Makes me get
into a reflective mood in terms of how do I listen to a new album from ARR.
I primarily can think of 3 approaches/patterns under which I listen to a new
album. Let me know what you guys think.

Approach 1: Take the album listen to all the songs at one stretch and then
repeat the same process. Advantage I found of this is that you listen to all
the songs at one shot, but disadvantage is that first 2-3 times I feel
completely lost. I follow this pattern a lot.

Approach 2: Take one song at a time, listen to it a few times and then only
move to the next song. This I rarely follow. Advantage is, it helps you
internalize one song at a time. But disadvantage is it takes lot of patience
 and effort !

Approach 3: Listen to entire album once, pick the ones that stand out right
away and stray towards them. I find this most suitable approach and I easily
follow this path. But, downside is that I naturally tend to neglect some
songs and never truly enjoy them unless I revisit the album later. This is
 most preferred approach for me.

So guys, what do you think ? I am curious to know how others do this.

[arr] I got addicted to film music because of AR Rehman says Mickey J Meyer (Telugu Composer)

I was born and brought up in Hyderabad. I had been learning piano and violin
since childhood. I was also trained in Carnatic singing and used to sing
Ghazals in All India Radio when I was a kid. After completing my fifth
standard, I got admission into Trinity College of Music in London. I
completed the 8 years music course from that esteemed music university. I
completed music course in 2002 and I had been working on my music and
practicing it for years.

I grew up listening to the music of AR Rehman. I got addicted to film music
because of AR Rehman. I decided to take up the job of a music director for
Telugu films. I approached Tammareddy Bharadwaja and he gave me a chance to
compose music for his 'Pothe Poni'. After that I worked for 10th Class and
Notebook.

I met Sekhar Kammula after the release of Dollar dreams. And our combination
got finalized for Happy Days.*

Does anyone know the instrument which is played in the song 'Ishq Bina' from
Taal , at the very beginning ...it basically forms the intro of the song,
before Anuradha Sriram starts the 'Ishq Bina' part.

Re: [arr] Review of VTV Lyrics (Average). What's your opinion ???

2010-03-17 Thread Srinivasa Krishnan
The lyrics are perfect fit for the movie.. Lyrics should reflect the mood of
the movie and it happened very well in VTV..

This is the second time, Thamarai is working with ARR..

She worked in Thenali for Injarungo and had won a Tamilnadu State Award for
Best Lyricist.

On Sun, Mar 14, 2010 at 2:35 PM, jayram m.n jayram...@yahoo.com wrote:

I admire and enjoy some of the good songs written by Thamarai. She has
given some memorable pieces like Suttum Velli Sudarey from Ghagni, Kangal
irandal from Subramanyapuram and so many others. The list is pretty long.

But my overall impression is that the lyrics in VTV was kind of average
 lyrics (or below average).

 (1) Hosanna and Ommna Penne - Both these songs can be remembered without
any lyrics, because of the catchy tune, main tag-word selected for the
 songs.
 (2) Vinnaithaandi varuvaya and Manipaaya - Better lyrics with good flow of
words in both these songs. Definitely promising.
 (3) Anbil Avan : Okay lyrics (most of the lyrics consists of rehashed
marriage oaths which is a cool idea).
 (4) Kannukul Kannai : Sounds more like a dialogue rather than a poem.
 (4) Since I don't understand Malayalam, I cannot say much about Aromale
lyrics. But from the translation that appeared in this forum, the lyrics
 sounds quite impressive and imaginative.

She has definitely struggled to write the songs for VTV. Perhaps she needs
to work more with ARR Sir to understand his style of composition and tunes
 to give much better lyrics.

Sorry for being little bit harsh with my review, but I expect more
memorable lyrics Thamarai (especially with ARR Sir).

  After
proving his mettle with some unforgettable
cop flicks and psycho thrillers Gautham
Vasudev Menon seemed all set to make you
fall in love, with love. In the end however
you have to say that he has managed to
  do quite the opposite.

  Karthik (Silambarasan) an aspiring film
director, falls head over heals in love
with Jessie(Trisha) at first sight. The
problem? He is a Hindu, she is a conservative
Malayali Christian, she has a job and
is settled while he is still at the crossroads
of life, trying to find a footing in cinema,
having given up his studies already and
to top it all she is a year older than
  him.

Despite having a great recipe for a classic
romantic flick Gautham gets it all wrong.
For starters this movie is a big time
overdose of romance with very few enjoyable
moments that you would like to relive
over and over again. The initial sequences
between the lead pair seem so artificial
and contrary to the voiceovers Karthik
gives at many points during the film.
There is no real chemistry between them,
at least for most part. It may be safe
to blame the writing for this which summed
up in one word is, unimaginative.

  To
top that there is nothing innovative about
the script and the meandering screenplay
just makes things worse. After a point
in time the movie becomes so much of an
ordeal and a test of patience
that you manage to easily look
  through

some genuinely good moments towards the end.

However to Gautham's credit no one would have
foreseen the twist in the climax. Yes it was practical
and had that element of surprise but does he expect
the viewer, subjected to almost 3 hours of romance,
romance and more listless romance to walk out of the
theatre having been swept off their feet?

Performances wise Trisha single handedly lifts the
film up. Sexy and classy she easily manages to overshadow
Silambarasan. Cinematography is one big reason why
this movie passes muster. Very surprisingly there
is very little to write home about AR RAHMAN's background
score but he sort of makes up for it in the songs.

If only this movie had more than just love in it (Some
healthy humor for example), if only it had packed
in some more interesting events to get rid of the
dryness, if only it had not been so long, if only...if
only..There are just too many of them.

It would be nice if the Sydney concert DVD includes Best of all Jai Ho
concerts as some songs that were missing in Sydney, but performed in other
Jai Ho's can be included in the DVD.. In this case, the DVD can be titled as
ARR's Jai Ho Tour or something like that..

Just a suggestion.. :)

 T K Karthik

With some of the hottest numbers in town, including two biggies from Baba,
MCA kid-cum-playback singer, T K Karthik, is the latest hit with Tamil
filmdom's music directors. Karthik comes from a family of bathroom singers.

When in college, he arranged to meet singer Srinivas, who happens to be his
best friend's cousin. To me, he was big. I am a fan of A R Rahman and
Srinivas was his singer. He asked me to sing and liked what he heard.
Srinivas eventually turned out to be Karthik's link to Rahman, he says.

He remembers the dates well. It was December 17, 1999. Until then, I had
never stepped out of home after 8 pm. But that night, my friends and I had
planned a midnight birthday party for a friend. It turned out that Rahman
wanted me to sing a number that night, and Srinivas kept calling home. It
was about 11-45 pm. My parents couldn't reach me. Srinivas finally told them
that if I was lucky, I would call him in 10 minutes. Otherwise... Somehow, I
got in touch with home and called him immediately. It was past midnight on
December 18''. He was just in time in Rahman's studio for the recording.

Rahman was like my demi-God, and there he was... in front of me. I was
nervous but Rahman helped me, cracking jokes and all. He is a lot of fun
when you know him personally. He had been called for a chorus track for
Pukar, which somehow was not released. It's a good sentiment, isn't it.

From then till about two years, I was doing only choruses for Rahman. It
got me very popular in college. On January 31, 2001, Rahman asked me and
others in the group to sing an Aalap. Next day, he called me to record for
Nendikitten from Star. It was his first solo. Karthik has since then done
tracks for Ilayaraja, Harris Jayaraj, Karthik Raja, Yuvan Shankar Raja,
Bharadwaj, Vidhyasagar, Deva and others. Most often though, he's not told
which movie or actor he is singing for. But when I was singing for Baba, I
knew I was singing for Rajnikanth and was very conscious. I had to get it
 right.

 Source- The Hindu, Aug 2002

If you ask T K Karthik what the best part about being a playback singer is,
he will talk about the countries he got to see...not the 40-odd film songs
he has sung covering Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada movies or the bunch of
numbers under his favourite music director A R Rahman. Tuning into Karthik
is not very difficult. He is the boy next door, 22, once a part of a college
band, who gradually shifted from college audi to Rahman's studio as a chorus
 member.

I just had one recording a month in the whole of 2000, he recalls. But
lots of stories to tell his friends after the experience. For this DG
Vaishnav College student, things started changing after he met singer
Srinivas. I used to keep in touch with him and he used to give me a lot of
pointers. says Karthik. He took the tips seriously and it wasn't long
before Srinivas put him onto Rahman.

But when Karthik sang Nendikitten in Star, he didn't know what was
happening. I was singing the track and had no clue if Rahman would use my
voice, he says. Rahman finally clued him in and Karthik's solo singing
career took off. Karthik insists life has always been like that for him -
unplanned. He learned Carnatic music for a year and then discontinued. Then
he joined ghazal classes. Now, it is Hindustani classical music for him, his
teacher being noted singer Sriram Parasuram. I was always passionate about
Hindustani music, he says. So after 13 years Karthik is learning what he
always wanted to. I was raw when when I started, he recalls. My Carnatic
training taught me the fundamentals, singing ghazals helped with voice
culture and Hindustani has widened my pitch and outlook. I think it is never
too late to learn. And all through his parents (absolute music lovers) gave
him all the support they could. They have no clue how a recording happens.
They just see me go out to record and come back with money, he says.

In between the studios and stage shows, Karthik says, he managed to
complete his B Com and is now hoping to finish a Master's at the University
of Madras. Like he said, it's never too late to learn.

Some of his recent numbers are Aval Ulaga Azhagiyae from Laysa Laysa, Vaada
Machan from Run, Maya Maya and Shakthi Kodu from Baba and a number in Five
 Star.

Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya on iPhone powered by DCI Mobile Studios

Shailesh [January 1, 2010, 6:57:54 PM]

The premiere of  Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, A.R. Rahman’s first album after the
Oscars, will be powered by DCI Mobile Studios (a division of Galatta.com) .Sony
Music India’s foray into the Tamil movie industry (Kollywood) has created many
landmarks and milestones with some of the most successful and prestigious
projects. And in yet another pioneering initiative, Sony Music India announced
the global launch and world premiere of A.R. Rahman’s most-anticipated and
awaited soundtrack from Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa – meaning ‘Will you cross the
skies for me?’ –  and abbreviated to VTV. What takes public anticipation to new
heights is the fact that this is the first Tamil album from A.R. Rahman after
his double Academy Award win and just before the Grammy Awards – scheduled for
February 10.
VTV stars Silambarasan (Simbhu) – touted as the next superstar in Kollywood –
and beautiful Trisha Krishnan in the lead roles. The film is directed by
Gautham Menon (whose previous Tamil film Vaaranam Aayiram was a critical,
commercial and musical blockbuster with songs released by Sony Music).
At the sneak music preview of VTV held in London on 19th December 2009, the
entire cast and crew (including A.R. Rahman, Gautham Menon, Simbhu, Trisha and
all the singers) were present. About this music preview, Gautham Menon said,
“London was a great experience. We had a live unplugged performance of all the
songs by the singers who have sung in the album. The audience, mostly English,
loved the music. Everybody felt it sounded very international, which was hardly
surprising, considering it was music by A.R. Rahman. The intention was to reach
and test the music on an international audience. We achieved more than that. We
plan to do a road show with all the singers now. This was a first of it's kind
show. Now the expectation about the film is tremendous and the pressure is on
me now.”
The music of VTV will be released physically on CDs and cassettes across the
world and via Amazon.com for online buyers. Digitally, VTV music will be
available on iTunes, Nokia Store, and iPhone application from the first week of
January.
This unique activity for VTV will be executed through an iPhone music
application (app) which will allow users to stream and listen to the complete
songs, download the songs, wallpapers and other movie-related information.
This initiative, a first-in-the- world for an iPhone application entirely based
on movie OST by Sony Music, is the result of the joint efforts by Sony Music
Entertainment India and DCI Mobile Studios, a leading Chennai-based software
and mobile applications developer, a division of Galatta.com. The service will
be available to all registered users of iPhone apps across the world. A user
will be charged $1.99 for downloading the application, facilitating unlimited
streaming of the songs from the album and $2.99 to download the whole album.
Galatta.com has also taken steps to restrict unauthorized sharing of the
content through this unique application. A user who downloads the songs on his
iPhone or iPod will not be able to transfer it to any other (meaning
unauthorized) device.
Mr. Shridhar Subramaniam, Managing Director, Sony Music India, said, “Sony
Music has always been at the forefront of redefining music marketing. This
initiative, which is a first in India, will enable a savvy generation of smart
phone users to access streamed audio feeds over an active data connection. Our
efforts have always been to make the music reach its audience as, when, and how
they want to enjoy it. We are quite certain that A.R. Rahman’s fans and lovers
of his music will enjoy his genius through this application.”
Commenting on the announcement, Mr. Girish Ramdas (President, Galatta.com)
said, “At Galatta.com, we recognize that mobile applications are a very
personal medium and should fulfill end-users’ desire to stream in personal
choice of audio content wherever they are; the iPhone is an ideal vehicle for
monetizing Sony’s content. This app will fulfill the dream of mobile
subscribers for easy access to the highly-anticipated film’s songs and get to
listen to the genius A.R. Rahman.
The movie will be released in the second week of February 2010.

Decade[/b] in the entertainment category.

Raining Filmfares, Padmashree, Doctorates, Lata Mangeshkar Awards, National
Awards, State Awards, Golden Globes, BAFTAs,Swaralaya Yesudas Awards, Grammy
Nominations and above all the Oscar Academy awards, not withstanding, Rahman sir
clearly won millions and trillions of hearts across the globe. I, personally
consider that more than those aforementioned awards, its the love among the
hearts of people that has made what Rahman sir is today!

Lets all rewind back to his illustrious works and corresponding achievements
of  the decade 2000 - 2009:

2000

1) Alaipayuthey (Tamil)
-- A Manirathnam - Rahman Sir Combination Classic Runaway hit!
-- Won Filmfare South Best Music Director Award

2) Fiza (Hindi)
-- Graced the movie as a guest composer and composed an anthem Qawwali Piya
Haji Ali which no one would ever forget

3) Kandukondain Kandukondain (Tamil)
-- A Musical Superhit in Rajeev Menon - Rahman Sir combination after Minsaara
Kanavu

4) Rhythm (Tamil)
-- A sugary sweet and simple composition by Sir

5) Thenali (Tamil)
-- A laugh riot flick in the combination of Rahman Sir - Kamal Haasan -
K.S.Ravikumar

6) Zubeidaa (Hindi)
-- A classic periodical love story by Shyam Benegal. It was ARR's signature
tunes that stood up in the movie and well received!

2001

1) One 2 Ka 4 (Hindi)
-- Movie turned out to be damp squib despite the presence of most influential
people: ARR Sir and Shah Rukh Khan

2) Star (Tamil)
-- Rahman sir re-used most of his Thakshak and 1947-Earth  tunes onto this
one.The response was moderate though!

3)Naayak (Hindi)
-- Remake of Tamil Hit Mudhalvan, the same songs were re-used and the
response was great!

4)Lagaan (Hindi)
-- One of the most successful Cinemas in the film industry, Rahman sir proved
the world that there is no one to replace him in period films.
-- ARR swept away almost all awards for the year
National Award for the best Music Direction
Filmfare Award for the best Music Direction
IIFA Award for the best Music Direction
Zee Cine Award for the best Music Direction

5) Paarthale Paravasam (Tamil)
-- Hugely anticipated movie of the year since it was legendary director
K.Balachander's 100th flick! Songs were well received but the movie sank
without a trace!

6) Alli Arjuna (Tamil)
-- Another masala flick which had tunes of Pukar, 1947 Earth and One 2 Ka
4 all mixed together. Both the songs and film was soon forgotten since all
felt that the songs have already been heard before in Hindi!

2002

1)Kannathil Muthammital (Tamil)
-- The year began with a bang with Rahman sir teaming up again with
Manirathnam. The result: A Megahit venture!

--ARR was again the most favourite among the award presenters
National Award for the best Music Direction
Filmfare South Award for the best Music Direction

2)Saathiya (Hindi)
-- A hit remake of the Tamil classic hit Alaipayuthey
-- Songs became a rage among masses and classes with ARR grabbing :
Filmfare Award for the best Music Direction
Bollywood Movie Award for the best Music Direction
IIFA Award for the best Music Direction
Zee Cine Award for the best Music Direction
MTV Immies Award for the best Music Direction

3) The Legend Of Bhagath Singh (Hindi)
-- A revolutionary concept by Rajkumar Santoshi
-- Songs and BGMs ruled the music world while the movie bombed due to the
interventions of too many movies with the same concept released simultaneously.
ARR also received the Filmfare Best Background Music Award for his soul
stirring BGMs.

4) Baba (Tamil)
-- A mega hyped Rajinikanth starrer which made Rahman sir adapt to Rajni's
stardom style. The result was just moderate and movie went disastrous!

5) Kaadhal Virus (Tamil)
-- A breezy romantic flick which arrived and departed very quietly without
making any news! Only hardcore Rahmaniacs cherish the album till date!

6)Bombay Dreams (English)
-- The first

A R Rahman has experimented, quite successfully, with myriad musical
genres. But when it comes to spiritual songs, he likes to leave them
untainted by not adding a lots of bells and whistles and rely heavily on the
 core melody itself.

I don't think any other music director (in Bollywood, if not in India)
has given us more spiritual songs than the maestro. I like to call them
spiritual songs, as opposed to religious or devotional, because although
majority of these songs have either Islamic or Hindu flavor, I find them
universally appealing and elevating. Here's a list of my favorites from this
 genre:

   * Khwaja Mere Khwaja – Jodha Akbar

This song was dedicated to the Hidalwali (Saint of India) Khwaja
Ghareeb-un-Nawaz, and was rendered by A R Rahman himself. He one mentioned
in an interview that this song is very close to his heart, and you can feel
his sincerity in the way he has sung this beautiful song. The soul stirring
instrumental (Oboe) version of this song gives me goosebumps every time I
 hear it.

[Trivia: The lyrics of this song were not written by Javed Akhar - who
wrote all other songs of this movie - but by someone named Kashif.]

   * Arziyan – Delhi 6

Backed by harmonium, tabla and continual gentle claps, this mesmerizing
qawwali is like an ode to the Islamic culture of Old Delhi. Javed Ali, along
with Kailash Kher, does full justice to Prasoon Joshi's meaningful lyrics
 and A R Rahman's magical tune.

   * Piya Haji Ali – Fiza

This was the first Sufi-style qawwali that A R Rahman composed for a
movie. For Khuda ke vali (God's friend) Haji Ali, to be specific. Shaukat
Ali's beautiful lyrics give a glimpse of how Islam, the monotheist religion,
has blended with the local cultures in India: Yahaan hindu muslim sikh isaai
 faiz paate hai.

[Trivia: This song was performed by Ghulam Mustafa brothers, Srinivas
and A R Rahman. Can you identify which lines are sung by Srinivas?]

Apart from the obvious Sufi semblance, muqaddar/taqdeer/kismat is
another connecting link between the aforementioned songs: Arziyan (Marammat
muqaddar ki kar do maula), Khwaja Mere Khwaja (Bekasoor ki taqdeer, tune hai
saNwaari) and Piya Haji Ali (Bigadi kismat aap ke dar par saNwarti hai).

   * Al Maddath Maula – Mangal Pandey: The Rising

Unlike the three songs mentioned above, this one has a high tempo, an
adrenaline rush and a dark tone of impending calamity. Murtuza, Qadir and
Kailash Kher sing this song with a fervor, with intermittent devout
spine-tingling calls to maula by A R Rahman.

[Trivia: Murtaza and Qadir are the same Ghulam Mustafa brothers from
Piya Haji Ali. They also accompanied A R Rahman in Tere Bina from Guru, and
rendered 'Doston se joothi-moothi' in Chupke Se song from Saathiya.]

   * O Paalanhaare – Lagaan

There are actually two versions of this song. One sung by Lata
Mangeshkar and Udit Narayan, and the other with an additional female singer.
It's the latter version that was used in the movie (to distinguish the lines
picturized on Gauri and Bhuvan's mother). But I prefer the former one, with
Lata's aging yet divine voice accompanied by mellifluous flute and subtle
sounds of temple bells. Here's the version that was used in the movie.

   * Noor-Un-Ala-Noor – Meenaxi

Written by the great painter and inept director, M F Hussain, this
addictive qawwali raised a controversy because some Muslims got offended (I
think the song uses a phrase from Quran to praise the beauty of a mere
mortal: Meenaxi). And guess who are the singers of this qawwali? Murtaza and
 Qadir again!

   * Man Mohana – Jodha Akbar

As I wrote in my review of Jodha Akbar's music, add Mira's pangs of
separation (from Krishna) to Radha's passion (for him) and you get the
recipe for this devotional song. The way Bela Shende has rendered this
bhajan - her unflattering voice and command over the highs and lows of the
song leaves you wondering why she doesn't get more offers as a singer.
(Isn't Kangna Re from Paheli is her only other song?)

   * Ek Tu Hi Bharosa – Pukar

Lata and A R Rahman joined hands only four times, and the result is
always breathtaking. The tune of this song was originally composed for a
concert in Malaysia and later used for this movie.

   * Zikr – Bose: The Forgotten Hero

   This song

Hi - Caught up on Blue yday. Went there with zero
expectations, given the rash of adverse reviews on the Net. But I must say I
was pleasantly surprised. While it surely wasnt a great movie, it surely
wasnt the pits that the reviews were saying and most definitely not a 1 1/2
star that Rajeev Masand had given it. And yes..i surely loved the BG score. I
mean...in an action movie, the BG had to be loud and fast. It cudnt be poignant
and soft!! And the movie was not boring, the stunts were decent and the
photography/ sound effects were top class.

Guys - Those of you who havent yet watched the movie, do check it out. It
surely is no worse that some of the hits of recent times!!

Cheers,

Balaji

Pradeep, Indian song - thats the sound of the violin strings ... observe
closely.

Another one -
Aye Bachu - 00:12 - 00:35 - the metal guitar has some reverb added - very
feeble reverb.
And.. when the singer starts singing , pay close attention to the lines Aye
Bachu, Tu Sun le... (Left Ear), the main lead guitar plays for those 2
lines... its a beautiful thought actually.. very stylish.

Agree 100% Anish! Great song! Actually, this song has one of the most beautiful
intros of any Hindi movie song I have heard. Very touching and with such a
simple melody, it really has an impact. Orchestration is world class and in

In my previous poll on favorite Blue track, Fiqrana is expectedly way ahead
of the pack. Chiggy is the real loser here relative to the others with only
3 saying it's their favorite. However, the song Yaar Mila is in second
place followed closely by Blue Theme. Now, that's interesting, because many
reviews have given a thumbs down to that song and some people elsewhere have
expressed a strong dislike for it. But, I guess the song has enough melody
and spunk to really endear it to many too!

Every song in the album has had a favorite vote, so to me, that's a really
good sign of a very strong soundtrack!

This is where I hear the continuum used to generate a racing
motorcycle sound in Blue theme. And I can assure u that each time I come across
a running motocycle on street I think of blue theme...

01:42-1:46

1:59-02:05

All these pointers you will ask... well its what I got after many listening of

Wow, and I think the sound quality is one of the best things
about Blueso rich, layered, crisp, uncluttered, bright, glossy

Oh well, to each their own. ..

One point that I think you're talking about.a lot of the vocals in this
album are processed, which is what may be bothering you. In Yaar Mila, not as
much processing is happening.

The 'sound' of Blue in the *CD* is, in fact, pathetic. It more sounds like

a studio version (work in progress) - unclear vocals, boomy sounds for

chiggy wiggy (which is muffling the instrument before Sonu starts singing).

 The vocals are extremely bad

Not sure if it is a problem in the final mix/mastering or a problem @

I am disturbed because of this trend, and more worried coz things are not

Is ARR not looking into the final product? I dont think so, 'coz the beauty

the rest of the songs in Blue.*

[arr] Great Singers Never to Have Sung For Rehman

2009-08-13 Thread Arun Krishnan
Hi,

It was when i was listening to Lukka Chupi (Rang De Basanti) by Lata
Mangeshkar that a thought struck me of the great singers who have /
could not sing for Rahman, and how would his compositions have been if
they were to sing for them.

One singer i would have loved to listen would be MS Subbalakshmi
singing to his tunes. Considering the magic that he created for Lata
Mangeshkar in Tu hi bharosa and luka chipi, it would have been a
remarkable combination, with Rahman using MS's subtle gamakams into
his composition.

Would like to know your views as well...

Hope this was not discussed earlier.

Continuum in its own is not an instrument that generates sound. Its a
finger board coupled with synth softwares to generate. It employs a

I recommend http://www.hakenaud io.com/Continuum / to learn more.

though it is not anyway near RDB but it is a pretty good movie.

one thing which really p** me off is how badly they picturized Rehna
Tu. oh man i don't believe how badly they spoiled and literally wasted
the song. i kept wondering why the HELL they placed it there and why
the HELL when Roshan (Abhishek) was with Ali (Rishi), it made no sense
at all. to who he was singing rehna tu hai jaisey tu?? i always
thought it would be towards Sonam's character. it was completely
idiotic. complete waste of a gem of a song.

I also was surprised at the Rehna Tu. Though I had already read in this
list that this song was to be on father Rishi and Son Abhishek, which
was not exactly how the characters were related in the film, but it was
parallel enough. Rishi being Abhishek's mom's silent lover 25 year ago
can be considered like father to him.

The lyrics seems quite odd at places conveying a much greater intimacy
than is possible between two persons who had never met till then in
their life. Firstly, it was not clear where Abhishek was thinking of
changing, which might have prompted Rishi to suggest him not to change.

But all that, Mujhe Teri Barish Mein Bheegna Ghul Jana, Mujhe Teri Lapat
Mein Jalna, Raakh Ho Jana, appear strikingly odd for a father-son
relationship. In India, whatever be the friendship and understanding and
belongingness between a father and a son, this relation is always a
serious one. So, these figures of speech don't go well.

All that Tu Zakhm De agar, Zakhm pe bhi mujhko pyar aaye, dariya o
dariya doobne de mujhe dariya mein sound so odd. there is no occassion
of Abhishek hurting Rishi, while doobna in dariya is more a concept
between lovers than between a father and son.

I find this song more suitable for a friend motivating a friend.

There are echo of lyrics in the song, that could be counted as an
effect, but at around 4:40, I find some female voice also joining, that
was unexplainable on the Rishi - Abhishek.

And whatever prasoon tried to explain in that haath thaam chalna ho, to
dono ke daye hath sang kaise, ek daya hoga, ek baya hoga, tham le, hath
ye tham le, chalna sang tham le. that went above my head. Even Mehboob,
PK Mishra's such explanations sounded much more short and natural. Even
Javed Akhtar's such explanations are more directly related. Could anyone
explain plz.

You spelled it absolutely right. It would have been better if the song's
tone was changed from between two males to from a male to a female and
that was Abhishek singing (may be in background) for Sonam character in
the film who was under a lot of pressure in the film to change. or, a in
female voice it could have been Sonam's idol finale song for Abhishek
when he was under a lot of confusion and pressure.

--
It only proves that most of film directors are just not capable of
visualizing proper placement and piturization of ARR's more subtle songs.

The ending 2 min musical piece in this song appears so soothing - like
when ARR was giving separate instrumental pieces in albums.

great..
Although we should love him for his Music, couldn't help noticing how
his 'style' is so improved in the last couple of years.

I am really in confusion with voices in this song. .

Who says Rehna tu Hai jaisa tu at 2:15? Benny right?
Again that voice is same as the once that begins at 0:20. . Which I believe is
Benny.

I am attaching two files Rehna tu_Low from 0:20 and Rehna tu_Low from 3:40
I think the low one is by Benny and high one is by ARR (of course). Have a
listen and help me figure out ARR's voice.

Anybody with voice synthesizers please help. .

Is it ARR or Benny?? the below mail has confused me too much. i am
head to toe in love with this out of the world song and cannot bear
to
know that it is Benny and not ARR who sings the marvelous rehna tu
parts (including the thoda sa resham) . i wonder how can i be
so
wrong in identifying ARR's voice. to me it is 100% ARR's voice. so
please someone clarify is it ARR or not??

by the way if it is not, i.e., all rehna tu parts are sung by Benny
(which also means Benny starts the song), then why ARR is listed as
first/lead singer of the song, should not it be Benny??

what?? it is not ARR who sings rehnaa tu throughout the song?? i
cannot believe this. and by this you mean it is not ARR who starts
the song as well?? because it starts with rehna tu? and this also
means it is ARR who sings the thoda sa resham. section as it
follows right after rehna tu? i am hell confused. please clarify.

The obvious faults in Rahman's Hindi diction are always
  overshadowed by
the sheer sincerity in his singing. That he turns *rehanaa tuu*
  into *rainaa
tuu* hardly matters when there are so many interesting elements
  dotting the
   canvas.

Rahman sings the line *rehanaa tu* only once at 3:40, otherwise
  it's Benny
who sings those lines throughout. And Rahman's diction was
perfect
  when he
sings it, while Benny's is subdued and in a good way. For a
change
 I
actually liked Benny's way of singing more than Rahman's in this
  song.

We all know Rahman's greatness in the 1990s, but I find him to be just
as great from 2000 to today. Here are my top ten favorite ARR albums
since 2000 not in order:

Alai Payuthey
Zubeidaa
Kandukonden
Lagaan
Saathiya
Swades
Water
Jodha Akbar
Yuvvraaj
Delhi 6

If asked to extend to top 15, I would add:

Bose
Meenaxi
Slumdog
Kannatil Muthumuttal
Jaane Tu

And if 5 more for top 20

Rhythm
WOHE
RDB
Yuva
Guru

Honorable Mentions not on the list:

LOBS - Has some of my all time favorite ARR songs
Ada - Some stunning numbers.
SOK - My favorite Tamil album in the past 5 years
Bombay Dreams - Very entertaining album with some very haunting numbers
