[arr] A R Rahman’s Gujarat theme song has not been given the publicity that it deserves
Ode to Gujarat still in official closet A R Rahman’s Gujarat theme song has not been given the publicity that it deserves Paul John | TNN Ahmedabad: Is A R Rahman’s ode to Gujarat going unheard in the state it was meant for? Four months after the composition, “Jay Jay Garvi Gujarat” was first played, there has been no encore at any state function. The Gujarat theme song was composed for the Swarnim Jayanti celebrations marking 50 years of the state’s formation on May 1. Rahman was reportedly paid a fee running into crores. But, strangely enough, there has been little attempt to promote the song. Even chief minister Narendra Modi’s blog, which was all praise for the ‘Khushboo Gujarat ki’ tourism promos — featuring Amitabh Bachchan as Gujarat’s brand ambassador — makes no mention of it. The only official reference to the song can be found on the Swarnim Gujarat celebrations website, which has an obscure link to the song. There is also a YouTube link, which has already got 20,656 hits in the last three months. Why underplay Rahman’s composition? Swarnim Gujarat organising committee chairman I K Jadeja denies this and says that the marketing rights for the song are yet to be assigned to an agency. “The decision is pending with the state government. It was played once in public during the May 1 celebrations and then there have been no major Swarnim Gujarat celebrations in the state,” he adds. Interestingly, Rahman has a strong connection with Gujarat. The maestro’s wife Saira Banu belongs to Kutch. Apparently, it was at a Sufi shrine here that Rahman’s mother first saw Saira praying. The match was fixed soon thereafter. “Jay Jay Garvi Gujarat” was originally written by noted Gujarati poet, Narmad. Other Gujarati writers who have contributed to this song are Dilip Rawal, Ankit Trivedi, Sairam Dave and Chiragh Tripathi. There is a Hindi version as well which has been written by Prasoon Joshi. Also in the works is a music video, which is being directed by Rahman’s long-time associate Bharat Bala. An interesting aspect about the song is the way Rahman has used Gujarati instruments like the rare Kutchi flute, Jodiya Pava, in the composition. Incidentally, another Rahman number, “Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto”, seems to be attracting some controversy. There are reports that the Commonwealth Games theme song has failed to enthuse the organizers in Delhi, with many claiming that it lacks “punch”. There have been unfavourable comparisons with “Waka Waka”, the hip-swaying Shakira number for the football world cup. Despite all the talk, “Jiyo” has already got almost 1.5 lakh hits on YouTube.
[arr] CWG Theme downloaded more than 7,000 times in 2 hours
Rahman unveils Games theme song Rumu Banerjee | TNN New Delhi: Within two hours of the song being released on Saturday, the AR Rahman composition for the Commonwealth Games 2010 had been downloaded more than 7,000 times. A hit? Definitely, as far as Suresh Kalmadi and the rest of the organising committee members are concerned. When Rahman released the theme song — written, composed and sung by him — on Saturday evening, Kalmadi and the VIPs who attended the function must have heaved a sigh of relief — finally, something was going right. While the song may have a slow pace — as pointed out by some of the CWG fans on a social networking site where the song has been uploaded — the emotion in it is spot-on. As Rahman croons “Khelo, jeeyo, hey-o, let’s go”, the rousing chorus takes the song forward, managing to convey what the OC and the Delhi government haven’t been able to till date — a sense of ownership of the games. Predictably, Rahman refused to talk much about the song, except for saying that he had been working on it for the past six months and was tweaking it even last night. He preferred the song to speak for itself — as was evident from the string of comments that started hitting the Facebook page of the Commonwealth Games 2010. Mostly in Hindi, the song is an exhortation to Indians to come forward for the games, starting with the salutation: “Yaaro, India bula liya.’’ And while the music video is yet to be unveiled, Saturday’s song release, with its accompanying visuals and dramatic symbolization on stage was certainly exciting. Senior OC officials claimed the song, which will be put up on the Commonwealth Games 2010 website, will be available for sale in CD format. However, free downloads are not officially available. [arr] Rahman to work with Usher, Dido
Article Comments Tags: A R Rahman|Usher|Dido A R Rahman More Pics Oscar-winning composer A R Rahman says that contrary to reports, he will not be collaborating with UB star Usher and pop singer Dido for his next album, but for a different project. “I will be collaborating with Usher and Dido but it is not for my next album, as everyone is saying. It is for some other project, the details of which I can’t reveal yet,” Rahman said from London. “I’m concentrating on my world tour right now, and my work on the collaboration will start after it is over,” added the composer, who is rehearsing for his European performances in London. Rahman, who shone on the global arena with his work in Slumdog Millionaire that fetched him double Oscars, says he has put his Hollywood ventures on hold for the time being. “I did get offers from a number of directors in Hollywood, but right now, I’m not taking anything because I don’t have the time due to my world tour. So, I have postponed that for some time.” Asked what makes him a global celebrity, Rahman said, “Well it’s tough for me to tell you what it is. I think it’s just about the timing. First, Slumdog Millionaire happened, then all the awards followed and then, one thing led to another.” The composer has the Pawan Kalyan-starrer Telugu film Puli and director Shankar’s forthcoming Endhiran in the pipeline. It’s not just Rahman who has a musical mind in his family; son Ameen is also showing signs of his father’s talent. The six-year-old sang a song in the Hollywood film, Couples Retreat. So will Rahman encourage his son to get into the industry? “Right now, we can’t say anything. He is too young. It all depends on the situation when he grows up,” said the ace composer. [arr] Mani Ratnam considers reviving his ambitious Lajjo
Kareena Kapoor-Aamir Khan may come together again as Mani Ratnam considers reviving his ambitious Lajjo Mani Ratnam’s passionate period film Lajjo, set during the Partition with Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor in the lead, is all set to be revived. It was earlier set aside after the songs had been written by Gulzar and composed by AR Rahman because the budget for a Partition film was considered prohibitive. But now with Aamir and Kareena’s jodi in 3 Idiots proving to be a rage, there were discussions with Mani to look into the project again. According to a source, Mani plans to go into Lajjo before he begins his film with Ranbir Kapoor. An elated Kareena says the revival of Lajjo would mean the world to her. “I will be too happy. Giggly, girlie, Barbie doll roles don’t bring out the actor in me. I want to be challenged. I can’t play the singing, dancing mannequin any more. I’ve realised that as an actor, playing varied roles is what I enjoy the most. I’m starving for good roles. My characters in Ra.One and Saif’s home production Agent Vinod are powerful roles,” she said. Part of the growth curve for Kareena involves learning how to play mom. She actually took basic tips from her sister Karisma and co-star Kajol to play a mother in Ra.One and Stepmom. Kareena says she feels being an aunt to Karisma’s kids has prepared her for a “more mature phase” in her career. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Entertainment/Bollywood/News-Interviews/Aamir-Bebo-together-again/articleshow/6001681.cms

President Pratibha Patil presents the Padma Bhushan award to composer A.R. Rahman in New Delhi on Wednesday.
[arr] AR Rahman feels honoured with Padma Bhushan win
He had famously dedicated his Oscar trophy to his 'maa' and musician AR Rahman who said that he was deeply honoured after being conferred the Padma Bhushan today had more reason to cheer as he was accompanied by his mother to the grand ceremony. The maestro was awarded the Padma Bhushan by President Pratibha Patil in the ceremony today which also saw actor Aamir Khan become the youngest recipient of the honour. I am happy and deeply honoured, the 44-year-old musician who brought glory to the country with his double Oscar win and then brought home two Grammies earlier this year, told PTI. Rahman's mother Kareema Begum shuns publicity but has been at the artiste's side throughout his rise to stardom and the music for many of his films including 'Rangeela' and 'Yuvraaj' were launched by her. Known as the 'Mozart of Madras', Rahman created history last year when he won two Oscars for his composition in the Danny Boyle film Slumdog Millionaire, a first for an Indian. His composition 'Na Na' was again shortlisted for an Oscar in the 'Best Original Song' category this year, but he failed to receive a nomination. The disappointment came just a day after Rahman's golden run at the 52nd Grammy Awards, where he bagged two gramophones for his music in Slumdog... The artiste is currently preparing for his much awaited 'Jai Ho Concert: The Journey Home' World Tour, which will kickstart from June 11 in New York and travel to over 20 major arenas and cities worldwide. Well-known choreographer-director Amy Tinkham, who has worked on the live musical concerts for pop icons like Paul McCartney, Madonna, Britney Spears, Dixie Chicks and Motley Crue, has teamed up for the tour.

[arr] ARR has been confirmed as the MD -- (AJith gautam movie)
A landmark film?An international feel... that’s what the makers of Ajith’s next are striving forBHAMA DEVI RAVI Times News Network Three of Kollywood’s happening men met on Sunday in a hush hush locale. Gautham Menon, whose VTV opened to rave reviews, Dayanidhi Alagiri, whose Tamizh Padam is turning into a sleeper hit, and actor Ajith, who is hitting the gym in a big way, met to discuss Ajith’s 50th film. Dayanidhi Alagiri and Vivek Rathinavel, the producers of Ajith’s 50th film and its director Gautham, want the film to be a ‘milestone’. “We want it to have an international feel and appeal to all strata of society. Most of the shooting will take place abroad. Landmark films like this do not happen very often .And, it will be unlike Billa or Aasal,” said a source. A R Rahman, whose tunes in VTV are a huge hit, has been confirmed as the music director. Shooting will commence on October 1. Ajith, who has hit the gym to get into shape for the F2 European challenge, will be away from Chennai from March, and is reportedly excited about the forthcoming motor event which will go on till October. The actor, we hear, wants to be an ambassador for the sport in India. Meanwhile, the producers and the director are working on other logistics, including finalising the heroine. Ajith, who had been caught in a controversy over his remark that stars were being forced to take part in sensitive social and political issues, has reportedly put the issue behind him. He is now focussed on shedding close to 20 kg, and is also firming up his neck muscles to withstand the strain of taking part in the F2 European Challenge. Ajith, who walked away from the motor sport six years ago due to injuries, now wants to make a comeback and straddle both motorsport and cinema. Gautham is known to ensure that every actor looks the part, and Ajith wants to deliver a hit. Rahman, we hear, is excited about the project, and one can look forward to a film in which the music (the lyrics of which will be penned by Thamarai) will also be a hallmark. Gautham, who is likely to finalise the heroine by Wednesday, is apparently looking for someone who will look classy and yet strike a chord, as Sameera Reddy did in Vaaranam Aayiram, and Jyotika and Kamalinee Mukherji in Vettaiyadu Vilayadu. [arr] Music is God’s gift to me, it just flows out of me: Ra hman
Music is God’s gift to me, it just flows out of me: RahmanMRUDU NAIK Thursday, January 21, 2010 7:16:57 AM Oman Time Email the story Print the story RSS feed MUSCAT: The much loved music composer A.R. Rahman has come a long way ever since his fresh and charmingly lilting soundtrack for Tamil film Roja. With two Oscars, a Golden Globe, a Padmashree, four Indian national and 24 Filmfare awards to his credit, Rahman, who turned 44 recently, has become synonymous with musical brilliance. Rahman has been heaped with praise for bringing new verve and fi nesse to music in India. The accolades have come by the dozen but what remains constant about him is his shy and down-to-earth demeanour. But what is striking about Rahman is his sense of dedication and devotion to what he loves the most — music. In an interview with Times of Oman, the extremely modest man says, “Music means everything to me. Music is a blessing for me. It is God’s gift and it just flows out of me.” The man who has showed the world new ways of making a song says he has no favourites. “I am an open person. Like how they say: We all came from one source, my philosophy is the same for music. Besides, good music can be appreciated by everyone,” he says. Rahman, who has effortlessly linked the global East West musical divide, says a right frame mind can create musical masterpieces. “It is like an incubation process. You just need the right temperature in your brain. If you are too excited or too calm, nothing can happen. You need the right frame of mind to create good music,” says Rahman. On whether time management is a problem, he says, “Music integrity is always about the personality. You don’t give work that is half-finished. You first of all plan your timing in such a way that you have enough time to do your best.” He explains that if he does 20 movies a year he might have that kind of a problem. “I accept very few movies at a time so I am able to concentrate,” says the man whose soundtrack of Bombay was listed in the ‘1,000 albums to listen before you die’ by The Guardian. The composer who takes six months to one year to create a composition says, “Directors give me enough time to do my job. Like others, I do have my bad days but I try the next day. The next day is not the same.” Despite Slumdog Millionaire’s huge success he is relieved there is no bid to typecast him. “Movie music is all about script. It is important to absorb the situation and emotions in a film before composing. So it is not about copying my own stuff. It is about paying attention to what people have not experienced before,” he says. Rahman makes sure he chooses projects that complement his music. “I have worked with the best in India. Right now I am working with Mani Ratnam and Shankar. Internationally, if there is an interest in my music and they want me to compose for them I would be interested in it,” he says when asked if there is any director he would like to work with. The music maestro has a special regard for Iranian films and says if somebody offers him a project he would do it. “It has nothing to do with the Sufi influence. I am basically a huge fan of cinema of that variety,” he says. Yes, if there is something he does apart from music, it is watching films. “I am a member of the Academy. So I get a lot of movies free now,” he smiles. Though he now partially lives in Los Angeles, he doesn’t find it inconvenient. “It doesn’t get tough. That is life. You can’t get everything in life,” he says. Since Rahman’s work gained global prominence with Slumdog Millionaire he has been offered international projects. He doesn’t see this as going away from India but spreading out. “For me it is more about expansion. Music has no boundary,” he says. Perhaps he understands the global pulse and his songs appeals to every part of the world and that is why his music really has no boundaries. The star, who has undertaken several sellout concert tours in over 30 international destinations, is open to collaborations of different kinds. “That is the way I am made. My journey through music is not about film music alone. I have played bands, sang and composed. I have been involved in things apart from film music. That is how you evolve as a musician,” he says. Rahman’s noteworthy contribution to music world is he has opened doors to new voices. Is that a conscious act? “My only criterion is talent. There are no strings attached. I don’t care whether one is popular or unpopular, poor or rich, good looking or bad. For me it is just about talent. If their voices compliment my songs, I take them on,” he says. Rahman is clear he doesn’t believe in favouritism. “If you attach yourself with a singer it conflicts with the interest of the movie. Yes, sometimes you get inspired by certain singers but it won’t be permanent,” he explains. Is there anything that inspires him, say, like the sea? “Sea? Not since

[arr] Happy birthday, Rahman! - TOI
Happy birthday, Rahman!SRINIVASA RAMANUJAM, TNN 6 January 2010, 12:00am IST Text Size: | Topics: A R Rahman Oscar Winner For a music director, there cannot be a better birthday present than an album release! For Oscar winner A R Rahman, the audio release of his A R Rahman Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (VTV) — slated for launch next week — will be his first Tamil film after more than a year! The Gautham Menon-directed film, which features Simbu and Trisha in lead roles, has raised a lot of expectations as it’s the first time that the filmmaker has teamed up with Rahman. With one of the songs (Hosanna ... ) already out on the Internet, expectations continue to soar. 2010 is a crucial year for the music composer as he needs to meet the world’s expectation, post his phenomenal fame for his score for the award-winning Slumdog Millionaire. This year, he’s expected to have three big releases —VTV, Raavan and Endhiran — apart from his international projects. Then, there’ll also be the Hindi version of Sivaji and a Telugu flick titled Puli. The variety that he gets musically is something that Rahman loves. “I like working on both styles — a Slumdog Millionaire-type- of-film and say, a Jodha Akbar-type. They are two different styles in cinema and both of them need to be there,” he told CT in an interview earlier. Melody or mass, Rahman surely rules! Thanks Regards Michael

[arr] Now, A R Rahman on your desk!
Now, A R Rahman on your desk! December 18, 2009 11:46 IST Tags: Rahman, Audio Media Education, Selva Kumar, Worldlight, CEO The 2010 calendar produced by Worldlight, a subsidiary of Audio Media Education, in aid of the A R Rahman [ Images ] Foundation, features pictures of the musical genius. The other significant feature of this desktop calendar is that it carries a number of thoughtful quotes from Rahman on universal themes like music, language and love. The vision of the A R Rahman Foundation is to strive towards making poverty history. As the first step towards achieving this vision, the foundation plans to set up educational institutions and provide world class education to the underprivileged children who do not have the means to access and fund their education. The A R Rahman Foundation presently provides free music education to 30 students from various corporation schools in Chennai. These students are being trained at the K M Music Conservatory by a world class faculty. The Foundation plans to increase the intake of such students in the coming years thereby extending the benefit of free music education to the truly deserving. At the Foundation, we know that there is no better investment than that in the education of children. says A R Rahman. Selva Kumar, a top-notch photographer and the CEO of Audio Media, has captured Rahman playing and enjoying music in the pictures. A moment of giving is much greater than a moment of receiving and I am honoured to be associated with the A R Rahman Foundation. I believe each one of us should come forward and support this initiative, says Selva Kumar. http://movies.rediff.com/report/2009/dec/18/a-r-rahman-on-a-calendar.htm

SWARNS Tuesday night, at their first state dinner, President Obama and his wife, Michelle, plan to wow India’s prime minister with a mélange of musical entertainment, presenting musicians and singers that represent a rich sampling of American (and Indian) genres. On tap for this evening: the National Symphony Orchestra; Jennifer Hudson, the singer and Academy-Award-winning actress; Kurt Elling, the jazz musician from Chicago; and A. R. Rahman, the Indian composer who wrote the score to the movie “Slumdog Millionaire.” The guests – about 350 to 400 – will savor the hottest event in Washington’s social calendar in a big tent on the White House’s south lawn, according to people familiar with the planning. More details will be released later in the day, including the guest list and the menu (which will be prepared with the help of a guest chef, Marcus Samuelsson of Aquavit in New York.) Mr. Obama got the big day started at a ceremony in the East Room Tuesday morning where he welcomed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India to the White House before a crowd that included American officials and members of Congress, Indian dignitaries and executives, and students from local schools. “As the world’s largest democracies, we can keep faith with our common values — speaking out and standing up for the rights and dignity to which all human beings are entitled; and showing that nations that respect the rights and aspirations of their people are ultimately more stable, more secure and more successful,’’ Mr. Obama said. -- - Regards ~ ~ A.R.Rajib ~ ~
[arr] Rahman dreams of fusion music
Rahman dreams of fusion music October 25th, 2009 Hyderabad Oct. 24: Oscar winner A.R. Rahman dreams about developing a unique Indian music stream, the Indian Symphony, fusing classical and Western music with the latest advances in technology. “Fusion music is the buzz word now and we have to adapt to the latest trends by incorporating the best of what we have and Western music with a technological touch, to remain as top-notchers,” he says. Rahman is in the city for a fund-raising concert to help flood victims. In a tête-à-tête with this correspondent over lunch, Rahman, who gave a new meaning to modern Indian music, points out that he has been implementing this novel concept in his music school, which he started in Chennai last year. “Indian music, Western music and technology, this should be our mantra.” His busy schedule notwithstanding (he arrived late on Friday after he missed his afternoon flight), Rahman spent about 70 minutes with a select group of guests, relishing Hyderabadi Nawabi dishes including nalli gosht, koftas, kababs, ghost biryani, dhall fry and plain naan. He politely refused when a chef offered him fried prawns. “Your food is a bit spicy, but I like it. I used to eat lots of prawns and crabs but of late I have stopped in order to keep myself fit.” Asked whether he has turned a veggie, Rahman smilingly said he tried it some time ago for three months, but gave it up when he became weak! “I need lot of stamina and I get it from non-veg supplements.” The guests included the GMR Airports chairman, Mr Kiran Kumar Grandhi, the GMR urban infra and highways chief, Mr Srinivas Bommidala, the Jet Airways area manager, Mr Ashok Kumar, and representatives from a couple of media houses. Rahman exchanged views on a variety of subjects including cricket, music, family values, environment, philanthropy, floods, tsunami, security, his concerts in India and abroad and corporate responsibility. Clad in a light aqua blue tunic, Rahman answered questions with ease. Attributing his success to his quick adaptation to changing trends, he said music buffs like music that combines all streams of vocal and instrumental music. “My dream is to develop the Indian symphony and I focus on teaching this concept to my students. A dozen leading foreign and Indian music faculty is involved in teaching 130 students at the music school,” Rahman says. Rahman attributes his success to divine grace and the support of his fans. Environmentally conscious, he plans to shift his music school to a sprawling 40-acre campus at Red Hills in Chennai, where he will implement the “green building” concept — everything will be eco-friendly from drawing underground water to electrification. “I am planning some concerts on climate change,” he says. A globe-trotter Rahman has visited half a dozen countries since he last visited Hyderabad on October 12. “I do not get jet-lag, but I need a day’s rest after a long commute. But my wife is tired and says she can’t globe-trot any more.” He goes to bed at 5 in the morning and wakes up at 1.00 pm to start a fresh day. “I am used to these freak timings,” he said. Soon after lunch, Rahman rushed to the GMR arena, where he performed a music show later in the evening. The police made strict security arrangements and the roads leading to the airport were jam-packed with his fans and music lovers. He has teamed up with acclaimed soul singer PJ Morton to produce a record that will have the both of them jamming together. A source close to the development says, Rahman and Morton had teamed up for the soundtrack of the Hollywood Vince Vaughn-starrer Couples Retreat and jammed together in the song Sajna. They had bonded really well. Now, the duo has come together again for a documentary called Son of a Preacherman that chronicles the life of the multiple award-winning artist and producer P J Morton himself. More importantly, Rahman and Morton are once again coming together for a record that will be Rahman's first ever Western album. The source adds, After working on Sajna, they both decided to work together and strengthen their relationship. It was Morton's wish that Rahman come on board the cast of the movie based on his life. The movie will have scenes showing Morton's relationship with his Christian father Paul Morton. In the past, Rahman has had successful pairings with various international artistes he has worked with. His aide adds, Morton and Rahman have had a great time working together. So, his association with Morton can always become more. We cannot say what he is planning now. http://www.dnaindia .com/entertainme nt/report_ music-for- the-soul_ 1301380 Is this true ?? I dunno which Project he is working on --Must be Couples retreat -- But he already performed with our boss? Recently I was in NYC where I performed with Oscar winning Slum dog Millionaire composer/artist AR Rahman for the Time Magazine top 100 most influencing people party at Lincoln Center. AR was on the top 100 list. Other performs for the VIP party were John Legend. Guest included Michelle Obama, Ophra WInfrey, Barbara Walters, Arianna Huffington, Stella McCartney to mention a few. Secret Service was in full effect! -In April I flew to Las Vegas (on a private jet!) where I did a show at The Hard Rock Hotel (The Joint) with AR Rahman who was also on the bill playing for the Digidesign party. Paul McCartney played the same club the night before. -Original Message- From: Roshan c.pix...@gmail.com To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com Sent: Mon, Jun 15, 2009 2:22 am Subject: [arr] Twitter - Does anyone know who this is and what project is he working for ? http://twitter.com/carmenrizzo/status/2135039813 Recording with AR Rahman today at my studiobut my mind is on my baseball game this weekend..! -- --- http://ramblingsoul.com http://2ic.in
[arr] ARR pune pics fro TOI
A R Rahman performs at the Times of India Jai Ho concert at Balewadi on Sunday There was Rahman magic in the air... Pune: There was a buzz in the air. Thousands of Puneites were eagerly waiting for the ‘Mozart of Madras’ and his magical melodies. And, he did not disappoint. The Balewadi sports complex resounded with the Rahman magic leaving his fans spellbound and asking for more as The Times of India Jai Ho concert unfolded in the balmy Sunday evening. The venue was crowded well before the show started. And then the wait began, that of the maestro and his posse of musicians. Moments before Rahman got onto the stage, radio jockeys of Radio Mirchi, RJ Shrikant and RJ Aditi played host and welcomed the crowd. The crowd complied when they were asked to scream ‘Jai Ho’ at the top of their voices but their loudest cheer was reserved for Rahman as he came on to the stage in a lift that came up from the middle of the stage. Clad in a white sherwani, Rahman started off the show with a track from ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and followed it up with a Tamil track ‘Machan Machan’. But it was his talk before the track that left the audience charmed. “Namaskar, salaam and satsriakaal! A dream I had since a long time has finally come true today, and I’m here20in Pune. We are going to have fun today with some good songs, some bad and some mistakes,” he said with a laugh. The next track, one of his latest releases — the title song of ‘Delhi-6’ — had the crowd up on their feet with all singing along with Rahman’s troupe of singers. “The concert began with a prayer for peace which was fitting since Rahman’s music symbolises light, beauty and peace for all those who hear it. His songs cut across languages and countries, only to bring everyone together,” said an excited Jill Sheldekar,a corporate trainer. Popular singers Hariharan and Sadhana Sargam’s entry on the stage caught everyone by surprise as they immediately launched into the song ‘Roja Janeman’ from ‘Roja’ to the delight of everyone, as the crowd hummed along. Singer Raja Hassan belted out the popular ‘Masakalli’ from ‘Delhi 6’ and ‘Guzarish’ from ‘Ghajini’ and he was accompanied well by a female singer from Rahman’s troupe. But while ‘Masakalli’ had the crowd whistling along, it was Rahman’s ‘Dil Se,’ the title track from the film by the same name that had the entire crowd up and jumping on their feet. From his entry in a lift that looked like it was on fire, to his voice that reached a high few could dream of, Rahman did it all and=2 0elicited the loudest cheers of the evening. “I do not normally sing this song in shows, but I got too many e-mails asking for this particular song,” he said. In between songs, Rahman also found time to converse with the audience, as he left the stage with the intention of ‘interviewing’ a few people. “I always get asked ‘Why’ and ‘What,’ etc, so now, I’m going to do the same,” he said, as everyone started jumping up and down to catch his attention. He finally spoke to a couple of people and then dedicated his next song ‘Jiya Se Jiya’ to them. “We are enjoying every bit of the show. His entry was superb and so is the event. Also, the police is doing a great job,” said Amit Besetty, who was there with his group of friends. It was not all music, and even the dancers in the troupe put up a splendid show. What was particularly eye-catching was a dance jugalbandi in martial arts style by two dancers. The other songs performed during the pulsating evening included ‘Ringa Ringa’ from ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and ‘Genda Phool’ from ‘Delhi-6’. Next up was the foursome of Rahman, Hariharan, Roopkumar Rathod and Rashid Ali as Rahman played the piano with the others singing some beautiful numbers. While Hariharan sang the soulful ‘Tu Hi Re’, Roopkumar Rathod followed w ith ‘Khamosh Raat’ and Rashid Ali with ‘Kahin Toh’. But, it was the patriotic ‘Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna’ from ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’ and ‘Bharat Humko Jaan Se Pyara’ from ‘Roja’ that stole the heart of the audience. “These are two of my favourite songs,” Rahman told the audience. “We think he is fantastic and being here is indeed a privilege. He’s ‘God’ and we have no words to express how we feel,” said friends Sujay Kulkarni and Manmohi Dake. The evening drew to a close with the hits ‘Kabhi Kabhi Aditi’ (Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na) ‘Chupke Se’ (Saathiya), ‘Rehna Tu’ (Delhi-6) and ‘Mayya Mayya’ (Guru). Later, the ‘Nightingale of India’ Lata Mangeshkar went to the stage and congratulated Rahman on his winning the Oscars. Lata, who spoke in Marathi, told the audience “Tyana Marathi samajat nahi (he does not understand Marathi), but Rahman sprang a surprise by saying, “But, I do!” She also presented him a memento. City mayor Rajlaxmi Bhosale presented a shawl to Rahman as city MP Suresh Kalmadi also came on stage. After

Ability Foundation and Rahman have been friends for a while now. He has attended the function as a spectator and has handed over the awards to the winners but this year he came as a performer. From among the CDs sent to him, he selected two disabled girls to sing with him on stage. There hadn’t been much time for practice. Radha Roy, one of the singers is from Mumbai, and you know how difficult it is for a wheelchair user to travel in India. The other singer Heeru is from Bengaluru and is visually impaired. Well, the instantly-recognised name was announced and the maestro, dressed in spotless white walked up, sat at the piano specially brought in for him and beg an caressing the keys. When did he last perform solo in public? He played and the audience was enthralled. The melody filled the hall and the hearts of those present. Heeru and Radha sang Rahman’s numbers when he played and the evening turned magical. As Rahman dinged out the clear notes and Heeru’s voice soared along, every one in the audience felt transported to another plane, another time and space. It was an extra-ordinary half hour. Now compare this with his performance in the bay area where he is on a tour now. No two shows involving the same person could be so completely different from each other! -Original Message- From: Sreekrishnan R rahmanfe...@yahoo.co.uk To: We, the fans ! arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com Sent: Wed, 15 Apr 2009 11:34 pm Subject: [arr] Rahmanji, Nagesh Revathy , 'Championing a cause' Championing a cause Mumbai: AR Rahman, Nagesh Kukunoor and actor/director Revathy have come together to support a Chennai-based organisation The Ability Foundation. I think this combo stopped after Jillenu oru Kaadhal . May be because Shankarji is part of SEL, and they are stand alone Music Dircectors.? If that be the case, we see him singing for junior MDs like GV Prakash, and even for Day to day tamil serial songs. ? I remember Boss saying to Singer Srinivas, When you have wings to fly, why should I make you walk, when Srinivas, was doing albums on his own...( I have heard this somewhere , may be Rahmania Show) ? Anyone has any thoughts on this. Thanks...
