[arr] He is indeed the simplest guy I’ve met-RUNA RIZVI
RUNA RIZVI, THE JAANE TU LADY.. AN INTERVIEW An established ghazal singer, she debuted in Bollywood with Sandesh Shandilya’s Uff Kya Jadoo Mohabbat Hai. But her big break had to wait till A R Rahman gave her the title song of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa. We bring you Runa Rizvi as she talks to Music Aloud about her career, ARR, and her upcoming projects. Though you started your singing in Bollywood with Uff Kya Jadoo Mohabbat Hai, the song where people really noticed you was the title song of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. So how did you land up that dream offer, of working with A R Rahman? Yes my debut was Uff Kya Jadoo Mohobbat Hai from Rajshri Productions and I think that was the most important and learning experiences of my first step in the music world. Its definitely close to my heart as it was my introduction to a recording microphone and the technicalities that a playback singer needs to learn. I must add here that it was quite a challenging experience but everybody right from the producer, the thoughtful Mr. Rajat Barjatya to my music director Sandesh Shandilya ji were very co-operative. I remember asking Sunidhi (who sang the title track in the movie then) when I met her at the studio, a few tips about singing correctly with the right throw on the recording mic and she was very helpful and supportive and assured me saying that no matter how long to takes to sing a song don’t forget you have sung it in the end with a lot of hard work. Later I worked with other artists too like Leslie Lewis, Bappi da etc. but then got busy assisting father in his music school and conducting workshops with him. One day a dear friend of my family heard me at a get together and recommended my name to Rahman sir as he was also Looking for a Punjabi folk voice for a project called Provoked by Jagmohan Mundra . So technically Provoked was my first work with Rahman sir . I did backing vocals, Alaaps and a few couplets for that movie. How was the experience of working with Rahman? Especially since the song was something not quite along your regular line of semiclassical songs? This is a myth I want to break in the industry – a classical /semi-classical singer can only sing that particular genre. I love hip hop, RB, blues, jazz, country etc and when I sing those I don’t think anyone would be able to point out that I am from a Classical background. So I am here to sing all genres I can and the deal is I want to make it sound mine when I do it. About Rahman Sir – I can fall short of words writing about Sir and his humility. I met him the first time In Chennai at his studio around 2.00 am in the morning. He is indeed the simplest guy I’ve met. I clearly remember having a very bad throat that day as I was all nervous and excited to see him. But the moment he walked into the studio he made sure I was at ease and asked me to sing something I was comfortable in I sang a sufi punjabi no. Then I requested him that I would like to sing a Western song too. He heard me out and just said OK Take. And we finished the recording through the night. After a few months I get a call again from Chennai and before I knew it I was sitting with Abbas Tyrewala and Rahman sir learning Jaane Tu in the studio (This time it was 3.00 am). When I sang the song it was all just a simple loop and Sir was on the keyboard guiding me through. I couldn’t believe it when I heard the song later! He is truly a musical genius. Jaane Tu is an achievement of my life. The one thing I completely admire about Sir which I also follow in my life is – His Music is his God. God bless him. I once asked him about the inspiration behind his music that makes him stand out of the ordinary. He just said, “Every song I create is like my first song”. Thats the passion he has for music. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to have worked with him and have learnt to become a better musician and more than that a better person. http://www.musicaloud.com/2010/07/09/runa-rizvi-the-jaane-tu-lady-an-interview/

Blue Music Review- AR RAHMAN IS BACK!http://ram-theobserver.blogspot.com/2009/09/blue-music-review-ar-rahman-is-back.html http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_WJ7NCJNDHSY/Sqr-hMyOM0I/AOo/xUxJIUiDMUE/s1600-h/a-r-rahman-at-blue-film-music-preview-at-cinemax-5864.jpg Whether expectations from the media are high or not, it doesn't bother me, what I do know is that I'm just glad that finally there is an AR Rahman album to cherish after nine months in 2009, a year where really good music was so hard to come by. 'Delhi 6' was brilliant, and I mentioned in that review that ARR is going great giving albums at regular intervals to keep me hooked to one song after another, but all of a sudden arrived this void since he walked up the red carpet and lapped up two more than deserved Oscars in Hollywood. I'm not a fan of Akshay Kumar, nor the type of regular movies he makes, the over-hype it gets and often lack of quality in the end product- and teaming up with Sanjay Dutt, Zayed Khan, Katrina Kaif, and Lara Dutta is hardly a sign of total difference. Despite being India's first mega budget underwater film- at around 100 crores (RM 100 Million) of budget- my expectations for the film itself are almost non-existent, so anything decent from that stable would be enough to get in my good books. Given the Akshay factor as well, I don't expect ARR to give his best album, and somewhat ironically, I also do hope ARR is not too brilliant in this album- because if Blue fails, the good music he gives for it will go seemingly unnoticed as well (look at what happened to Yuvvraaj, one of ARR's best albums ever- what ever happened to Dil Ka Rishta, it was the sort of song that should be described as legendary!). So, I lowered the target for ARR. And yes, he didn't try to make Blue his best album either, but I have to say, Blue is a ridiculously good album that runs on one USP- unpredictablity! One number to the next, ARR changes modes so affluently, and even in a commercial film like this where the only way to be going about it seems to be by giving fast-paced commercial numbers (a la Pritam), ARR leaves his stamp all over it. Welcome to brand AR Rahman! Its time for Akshay and the his team to do justice to this music. So on we g Hang on...the album is special for me personally because the female voice I fancy the most- Shreya Ghosal sings three (yes, three!) songs in this album- and not all the regular romantic number she is known for. And well, yeah, Kylie Minogue (yes, the Kylie Minogue) has also sung in this album...Enough generalizing and off to the songs, peel it one by one... Peel 1 Chiggy Wiggy Singers: Kylie Minogue, Sonu Nigam. I wanna Chiggy Wiggy! This song created especially for a promotional music video purpose, has Kylie (who will appear in the music video with Akshay) crooning her Chiggy Wiggy way that somewhat reminds you of Zara Zara from Race. But, hey, this is ARR na. Listen to halfway of the song and enter Sonu Nigam with an out-of-the-blue bhangra rhythm, now this is fusion of a high-order. Inovative-ness hardly comes in a better package. The western sections suit Kylie fine, and the bhangra section suits Akshay's image fine. You can already imagine how the music video is gonna be now. Good!! But, well, here it is...Enjoy! Peel 2 Aaj Dil Gustakh Singers: Sukhwinder Singh, Shreya Ghosal Put the guitar strings on, and just Chal Chal Charara re! A blues string simply doesn't get better than this. Sukhwinder and Shreya never are off-form, and putting such two able singers with a nicely arranged song, the results are bound to be infectious. Very the good!! I can't remember the last time I heard such a song in Hindi, or even Indian music arena. Well, who else but ARR to compose the first, aite? Its a priviledge for the song itself. :P Peel 3 Fiqrana Singers: Vijay Prakash, Shreya Ghosal How do I put up a thumbs up icon here? Because this is the best of the lot! Fiqraana is phenomenal! Your body might tap to it without you even knowing. It is that good, and its flawless as well. The song doesn't have one dull moment, its completely consistent in its tunes and once again, guitar strings are too good- they are so Robaroo-ish. Brand ARR!! Brilliant! Vijay Prakash sound so different in this song, its abvious that ARR hymns with him at parts, but even alone, Vijay sounds like ARR himself with the way he has sung this song. Shreya, well, need I say? Of course the male singers take the limelight, Shreya is just a beautiful compliment to it. Peel 4 Bhoola Tujhe Singers: Rashid Ali Kahin To Hogi Wo. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. Dil Gira Gaaftan. Delhi 6. Resonate both of that, and you have Bhoola Tujhe. Well, it is afterall crooned by the same singer. Rashid Ali has one-of-a-kind voice, and you can use this anyday to create to an emotional romantic number, and ARR leaves his stamp and slow orcehstration all over the place for this song. This is genuine ARR melody, because it grows on you further as you listen to

[arr] He always said he wasn’t ready for a biogra phy
n 2003, a Chennai-based journalist and author was on Penguin’s shortlist of three-four writers for an A.R. Rahman biography. Finally, the publishers gave Kamini Mathai the go-ahead when they received her outline of what she wanted the book to be. After six years— during which she interviewed the composer, went in search of his roots, interviewed scores of people from his past and present, wrote and rewrote—Mathai’s book was launched a fortnight ago. In an interview with Lounge at her Chennai home, Mathai spoke about how she got Rahman talking, the people she met, and why this is not an authorized biography. Edited excerpts: What did your book outline to Penguin say? At that point, I didn’t know too much about Rahman. I vaguely knew about Roja (Rahman’s first movie as a music composer), that he was a Hindu and had converted (to Islam)—the basic stuff. I didn’t know how exactly to write about somebody so young. I told them in my outline that I would make the book go back and forth between the present and the past. I was very excited when I was asked to go ahead, but I knew it was also going to be very tough because Rahman wouldn’t meet me easily. The first meeting itself took me around nine months Was Rahman receptive to the idea of a biography? To be honest, no. He was receptive in the sense that he would let me speak to him, he put me on to his mother, he’d answer my questions—he was the usual, polite Rahman. He always said he wasn’t ready for a biography. He is known to be a shy person, and doesn’t talk about his private life. I think you have to be really, really close to him to finally get him to open up. He is very guarded about his past, about everything. So, I had to have eight paragraphs of information and then ask, “Is this true, or why did you say this?”, then he would open up. You have to be specific. You spoke to nearly 100 people. Were you able to verify everything? With Rahman, yes. Some of the things, I would just get a “yes” or “no”. So, that way, it would save me time. I got at least dates and years and things like that verified. Was it difficult to get in touch with people associated with Rahman or his father? Ah, yes. Somebody told me that Rahman’s father used to live on a street in the Mylapore area (in the heart of Chennai). I went to that street and was generally yelling “R.K. Sekhar family—anybody?” I went from door to door. I found this lady, Boologarani. She gave me this booklet, a family tree. Rahman’s father’s picture was there; Rahman’s grandfather’s picture was there, too. This was the only thing that gave me exactly when Sekhar was born, because Rahman himself told me he didn’t know. What struck you the most about him? That he is actually so simple. One of the people I met told me he didn’t want to buy his BMW—he would go around in whatever car he had. The simplicity was striking. Have you sent a copy of the book to Rahman? I sent him some chapters, but he had told me that he wanted it to be an unauthorized biography. I got an SMS from him saying he agreed it was unauthorized. So why the confusion about the book being an authorized biography? I don’t know. Nowhere have I stated it was authorized, nowhere has Penguin stated it is authorized. There was a PTI report that came out saying it was authorized. I sent Rahman a mail saying (that) wherever you see the word “authorized” you can be assured they have not spoken to Penguin or me. He wrote back saying: “I understand. Do clarify wherever possible.” Finally, does Rahman’s music really reflect who he is? He says it does. He says that all his music has a little bit of melancholy in it—a touch of sadness, because that’s how his life has been. http://www.livemint.com/2009/06/26215939/8216He-always-said-he-wasn.html?h=B

In General, everyone would work with a programmed time table. These many hours work, these many hours rest and weekly holiday etc. But Rahman doesnt allocate his time for work and rest. But for him, it would be Music, Music, Music all the time. - DIr Shankar If Rahman is like this, his father was still more hard working. He used to consider his duty as God and compose music with all his heart. When he enters his studio in the day, we dont know when he would return back. He would not have food at proper timings. He would be consuming tea at high intervals. Like his father, Rahman also doesnt eat at proper timings would be working most of the time. He wouldnt devote time for having food, and would be having one idly or half idly and would rush back into his studio. Seeing that, would be more painful. Oh what this boy is not having food properly , and doesnt take care of his health at all. Then, myself and his wife would persist in him having food properly at proper times and he would oblige. - AR'sMother RANi MAGAZINE -- regards, Vithur

I know Rahman since the time he was Dileep. His father and my father Anandan were good friends. I used to go to his home. He would be practising the Keyboard. He would be shy beyond limits. He would talk freely in home. I would tell him Lets go to some recording theatre and practice for which he would say, Oh My God! Lets not have it here. He would keep on doing something with the Keyboard right from his tender age. Doing like , he would try to master the same. He would play the tune of the song in his keyboard , before he composes the exact song. Until the Film Director gets satisfied, he would keep playing the tunes one by one. Later, he would call the Orchestra. After the tune is Okayed, he would ask for four or five such rythms or beats. I would play my part and demonstrate. He would improve it a bit. When I play my part, he would love the same and enjoy it by shaking his head. He has lot of devotion towards God. He would enter the Recording Theatre after chanting the Holy Quran. At times, he would say, Pls relax yourselves for some moments. I would be back soon and thus saying, he would go for his prayers. Apart from the time for sleep, the rest of the moments he would be thinking of music. He is such a miraculous man. Very rarely, when he is in very good mood, he would come and crack jokes with us. - Drums Sivamani RANI MAGAZINE -- regards, Vithur

Are we going to see your woman, Preity Zinta, going through the same torment in Videsh? I must say that *Heaven on Earth* or Videsh is very different from Provoked. It's like what Shakespeare said - There are three stories in the world and its how you tell them that makes one different from the other. Yes, this story is partly about domestic abuse, but for me, the film is about the power of imagination. When reality becomes so grim, how can you use your imagination to liberate yourself? That is what the film is about. The milieu is of course the isolation of the first generation working class immigrant, whether they are in the U.S, the U.K, Australia or in this case Canada because it's the first generation that suffers the most. *What other films are you working on?* I'm working on two films currently. One is a film called Exclusion with Akshay Kumar and the other is based on Sulman Rushdie's book called The Midnights Children. *You've worked with the music director A.R. Rahman before. But how about working with the Oscar winner now?* (Laughs) Yes, A.R did the music for Fire, Earth and Water. I'd love to work with the Oscar winner now, you're right (laughs). He definitely deserved an Oscar. But we should never ever forget that he has always been a brilliant music director and just because the West has recognised him doesn't mean that he is more recognised now. http://entertainment.oneindia.in/bollywood/interviews/2009/deepa-mehta-interview-140309.html -- regards, Vithur

[arr] 'He Liberated The Film Song'
'He Liberated The Film Song' He changed the age old format of the film song-- the asthayi and the antara and then a cross line to match the asthayi -- that has been our format since the inception of film music GULZAR ON A.R. RAHMAN | E-MAIL | ONE PAGE FORMAT | FEEDBACK: SEND - READ | When Rahman entered the Tamil and Telugu film industry I do not know how it affected them, but when he came to Hindi films with Roja his entry was noticed and much talked about. Detractors started saying, Hes repetitive etcetera, but Rahman quietly continued doing his work and they fell silent and his music grew on them. Here people take a lot of time in accepting anything new. Thats a peculiar quality we seem to have. He used folk and classical and blended it beautifully. He used western sounds and electronics and used them in Hindi music and they didnt sound foreign at all. He blended them so well into our music.. For the lyricists, he made a very important contribution. He changed the age old format of the film song-- the asthayi and the antara and then a cross line to match the asthayi -- that has been our format since the inception of film music. Rahman let it go and I for one felt greatly elated because I have always used blank verse and I was very comfortable with this form. He liberated the film song from the earlier shackles. I had used this kind of writing earlier in songs like meraa kuchh saamaan tumhaare paas paRaa hai etc but his coming made it acceptable. In our music today, Rahmans presence has made a whole lot of difference. What else can we ask for? Not only in India, he has opened up the horizon in the west also. It needs courage to experiment the way he does. His Bombay Dreams was an experiment which succeeded beautifully. He is totally obsessed with work and, whatever the platform, he enjoys trying new things. Thats how he has reached a level where he hasnt lifted one but two Oscars. When he lifted one, he lifted two! I must add that in the Jai Ho song which won the other Oscar, there was a magic voice whose contribution cannot be missed -- that of Sukhwinder Singh. There have been times when the singer and the lyricist have won awards and the composer has not but that doesnt lessen the role of the composer. Rahman is this era. Prasoon Joshi He has a way of breaking the meter, it gets freshness into the song. Sivamani 'For him, every song is an Oscar or a Grammy' Shankar Mahadevan What RD Burman did in the 70s, Rahamn came and did in the late 80s. Mahalxmi Iyer With his first album he revolutionized the sound, the style and the content of Indian film music for the future, all at once. Sonu Nigam His honesty has given his music a certain ingenuity, a certain simplicity. And the better the talent, the more I see God influencing the work. Shantanu Moitra He himself is a technician, so he actually works with textures of voices. Rahman's mixing really stands out -- be it on a transistor or a hi-fi system. Anu Malik When I first heard Choti Si Aasha it was mindboggling -- a composer was born to my mind. Vishal Of Vishal-Shekhar: If even his average work can get him on a global platform and fetch him two Oscars, just imagine what would Dil Se deserve at least six! Salim Of the Salim-Suleiman duo: Rahman has done for film music what Ravi Shankar or Zakir Hussain have done for classical music or Zubin Mehta for Western classical music. Harshdeep Whenever Rahman listens to somebody, the voice registers in his mind and when he has a song fit for that voice, he calls you Kavita Paudwal To him, a voice is also another sound--a wonderful sound to which he gives due prominence Madhushree He is always searching. He's very creative. He wants to work with new people, make new sounds, do new things Shaan He refused to shift to Mumbai, stayed in Chennai, recorded in his own way. That aura as a composer works for him. Mohit Chauhan There are silences, spaces in his music. His music borders on spirituality. Chinmayi Sripada His music is all about the magic of sound. It has divinity; you connect at an emotional level. Benny Dayal He plays with the texture of the voice but lets the singer be. Recording is more impromptu than rehearsed. Anil Srinivasan Illaiyaraja is brilliant but he is more about music while Rahman is all about sound. Kailash Kher Like new recipes of food, he keeps trying out new voices, has an innovative mind and is constantly experimenting. Srinivas Bhashyam He bridged the North-South divide. He has been a patriotic, not regionalistic person. He sees India as one entity. Shaleen Sharma He doesn't make music into a khichdi. He
Re: [arr] 'He Liberated The Film Song'
my 2 cents, pls forgive if any info is wrong In a music industry where duo sisters ruled the roost followed by Alka and others it is Rahman who would give a song to any new comer, he can easily use a new voice, It may not be perfect on sur/pitch or range but Rahman makes it acceptable and the song strikes a great chord with people like aye bachchu, behka mai behka. So isn't he promoting besura singers. No wait a minute when the situation needs he would go for a perfect sur like aaja balam in Yuvraaj (title theme) or radha kaise me jale on raag bhimpalasi in Lagaan or ghanan ghanan on raag Kafi in Lagaan, so he knows his music very well. His orchestration is heavy and muliti layered and that is why it takes a while for his songs to grow over you. Just to add few things more. ARR is a thinking, innovative and evolving composer all the time. His Hindi songs in 90s had strong influence of Carnatic classical but then when one listens to RDB song or Mangal Pandey's tumhari adao pe mai wari wari (raag darbari) ot title theme one can easily identify these with freedom fight in North Indian backdrop. Another thing very unique about him is he is not afraid of using modern instruments in a song based on old story like in Shaheed Bhagat Singh songs he has used both matka and synthesizer (mahi ve) and extensive keyboarding in desh mere in same film, similarly in tumhari adao pe mai wari wari he would easily use heavy bass drones which otherwise a conservative composer wouldn't. In ye jo des hai tera (swades) he has used Sehahnai and drums in same breath, he would use software in a song like jage haain to create sound of santur and get away no one minds and ARR establishes a trend this way. Another thing is his editing, mixing and recording technique, It is said in Roja he recorded the same thing over and over so that even those buying cassettes get audio quality of CD. He has largest collection of softwares and instruments, he often arranges instruments for his players. When he asks a player to paly a dhun it is recorded and then it is kept as bank to be used at appropriate time, if it is used in a song , the gyu gets moneya and thank title on a cassette or CD cover. No one ever did this for any instrumentalist till date in Bollywood hence he is immensely popular with players. This is why names like Kuttu and Shivamani are house hold thee days. He keeps abreats of latest develpment in world music and the effect is there to see. He used MIA to do rap lyrics in O Saya. Similarly he has used a black rapper for BGS of lord of rings. He has changed his keyboards to over 20 times in last 15 years and makes sure he uses the best modes and sounds. He has a large collectioin of audio sample from several sources (remember killer rhythm of aiyo aiyo o from Rangeela? that is audio sample..!) and he himself has created large number of samples for every one to use. And about humiliy kya kahne, if there was a oscar for humility it would go to A R Rahman for suree. --- On Sat, 2/28/09, Gopal Srinivasan catchg...@yahoo.com wrote: From: Gopal Srinivasan catchg...@yahoo.com Subject: [arr] 'He Liberated The Film Song' To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com Date: Saturday, February 28, 2009, 12:25 PM 'He Liberated The Film Song' He changed the age old format of the film song-- the asthayi and the antara and then a cross line to match the asthayi -- that has been our format since the inception of film music GULZAR ON A.R. Detractors started saying, He’s repetitive etcetera, but Rahman quietly continued doing his work and they fell silent and his music grew on them. Here people take a lot of time in accepting anything new. That’s a peculiar quality we seem to have. He used folk and classical and blended it beautifully. He used western sounds and electronics and used them in Hindi music and they didn’t sound foreign at all. In our music today, Rahman’s presence has made a whole lot of difference. What else can we ask for? Not only in India, he has opened up the horizon in the west also. *A glorified Rahman and greater expectations * CHENNAI: Even as the nation celebrates the limelight hogged by A.R.Rahman at the Oscars, a group of filmmakers in the industry are on cloud nine. For, these are the people who have signed the Oscar-winner for their impending movies. Gautam Menon, one of the handful to have roped him in, says the award is a recognition for all his works. “Oscar for him is not just for Slumdog Millionaire. The award sums up his extraordinary work in all the movies he has worked in.” Calling himself a “fan of Rahman right from his maiden album,” Gautam says signing him for the Simbu-starrer ‘Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa’ was a dream come true. “I wanted him to score music for my first film. I am glad it has worked out now.” Irrespective of the ‘Oscar’ tag, the music wizard’s albums would always record high sales. “I have an entire collection of Rahman’s albums. I think many Indians would. We are all happy about his Oscars, no doubt. But there is no question of boost in marketability of our album. If it is Rahman, cassettes will anyway sell like hot cakes.” For ‘Endhiran’, the banner is just getting bigger. Directed by Shankar, with Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the lead, the movie is set to take the masses by storm with its top-slot cast and technology crew including Stan Winston Studio for Animatronics and Yuen Woo Ping, for the stunt sequences. Rahman’s Oscar has now added a great deal to the movie’s grandeur. Actor Rajinikanth’s daughter Soundarya has a reason to cheer, too. ‘Sultan the Warrior,’ the animation movie starring her father jointly produced by her company – Ocher Studio, will now have an Oscar connection, with Rahman handling the background score. “I was ecstatic when I saw Rahman sir win the Oscar. He deserves this and much more. He is a great human being,” she says, adding: “His winning the Oscar will surely add value to all the productions he is involved in and as he said in one of his interviews, his quality will remain the same, no matter which awards come by. I am a great fan [of his] and it is an honour and a blessing for me to be working with him on my directorial debut.” http://www.hindu.com/2009/02/26/stories/2009022658110200.htm -- regards, Vithur
[arr] He believes that as a producer is giving him his money's worth, he should not waste his money
AR Rahman's Slumdog Millionaire principle MUMBAI: Oscar winner AR Rahman is sitting pretty with his double whammy. But that was not the case with Danny Boyle, who had flown down to Chennai after a meeting was fixed between him and the musician. The director and his assistant landed in Chennai only to find Rahman's cell phone switched off. After making several calls, the duo traced the studio in which Rahman usually records his music. On reaching the studio, Boyle tried calling him on his cell again but it was still switched off. After patiently waiting for four hours, Rahman came out of his recording studio and apologized. A Bollywood film director, who was closely associated with the making of Slumdog Millionaire said, Rahman said that it was his principle never to talk shop or discuss any work while he is working on a score with another producer. He believes that as a producer is giving him his money's worth, he should not waste his money and discuss work with another producer. Boyle landed up waiting for four hours for his time with AR Rahman, and I am sure Boyle thinks its time and money well invested. Here's certainly a tip for those who want to reach where AR Rahman has reached. http://www.businessofcinema.com/news.php?newsid=12182 -- regards, Vithur

She then points to the little boy next to her in the frame and says excitedly, That's him, that's him! He was a quiet boy, says Valli Arunachalam, who was AR Rahman's seventh grade class teacher. He sat in the front row of my class. Even then, his hair used to fall over his forehead and I used to keep telling him to have it cut. But he never did, she adds. When AR Rahman was in school, Mrs YG Parthasarathy, currently the dean, was principal. She remembers Rahman as a music master. He was a one-man orchestra, he and his keyboard, she says. Chandra Ramani, his Hindi teacher, says she remembers going to his house in a cycle rickshaw so they could return with his keyboard. He was a little boy,' she says. He couldn't lift the keyboard on his own. Raji Babu, his class six science teacher, says many years later when they called Rahman to school to felicitate him, the function had started at 6.30 pm and was to go on for more than an hour. Rahman excused himself from the stage for a while and went backstage to perform namaz, she says. Outside of school, one of Rahman's favourite teachers was his piano teacher Jacob John, who passed away a few years ago in Liverpool, where he lived with his daughter Tanya Paul after he retired. Every time Rahman was in UK he would visit John. AR was the son of my dad's good friend Sekhar. My mum says he used to come for lessons on Sundays. He came to my father for 15 years. My father thought he was a prodigious talent, she says. Rahman went to visit her father in the UK six months before he died. Though bedridden, my father seemed to find a new lease of life on seeing AR. They discussed music through the night. My dad even managed to get off the bed in a sprightly manner and play the piano with him. He was so excited for days after that, she adds.
[arr] He asked about my lyrics-K Kalyan, music director and lyricist
It was expected that A R Rahman would win the Oscar. A genius and a kind-hearted gentleman with a spiritual bent of mind, Rahman winning the award is no surprise at all for me,’’ says K Kalyan, music director and lyricist. “I can never forget the entire day I spent with him for his album on the Taj Mahal about two years ago. For this album, he’d asked me write lyrics on the Taj in Kannada. I wrote them and met him in his studios in Chennai. He’s a simple man, and asked the meaning of some Kannada words. He was in his own musical world. He sang my lyrics for the album.’’ Rehman was very hospitable. “We had lemon tea together several times. Nobody can guess what he has in his mind about some lyrics or music. Once it comes out, it is a hit. That is his calibre.’’ Kalyan has a rare gift from Rahman. “When his office in Chennai asked about my remuneration for the lyrics, I refused to accept any money as a mark of respect to the genius. One fine day, I got a cheque signed by Sasira Rahman for the lyric. I was stunned. I’ve kept a photostat copy of it. That’s a treasure I’ll always cherish.’’ http://epaper.timesofindia.com/Default/Scripting/ArticleWin.asp?From=ArchiveSource=PageSkin=TOIBaseHref=TOIBG/2009/02/24PageLabel=2EntityId=Ar00203ViewMode=HTMLGZ=T Regards, Anantha the Dreamer http://arrtheboss.blogspot.com Laurence J. PTI Beverly Hills: From making ad jingles to getting India its first Golden Globe, A R Rahman continues to make the nation proud with his symphonies earning accolades from all corners of the world. Rahman, nicknamed the 'Mozart of Madras´ by Time magazine, was born in Chennai on 6 January, 1966 as S Dileep Kumar but his family converted to Islam from Christianity in 1970s. The Indian Mozart started his career by composing ad jingles. He was particularly noted for the music he gave for a Bombay Dyeing ad which became very popular. Shortly after that in 1992, he was approached by film director Mani Ratnam to compose the score and soundtrack for Ratnam's Tamil film 'Roja´. The music of the film was a refreshing change from the run-of-the-mill renditions and gave Rahman his maiden Best Music Director trophy at the National Film Awards, the first time ever by a debutante film composer. Rahman entered the Hindi film industry with 'Rangeela´, directed by Ram Gopal Varma. The music of the film became a rage and the genius continued to give some brilliant compositions for films like Bombay, Dil Se, Taal, Lagaan and Rang De Basanti among others. What made Rahman's music click with the listeners was its use of refreshing use of percussions, sound and melody, most of which was inspired from Indian folk music. His 1998 superhit composition 'Chaiyya Chaiyya´ was deeply rooted in Sufi mysticism. Yes, it sounds like Nee Dhan En Desiya Geetham... (the first line of course..) ummm --- Ravi d [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Yaseer, While u say Katril oru varthai.. is that song from Rhythm? Though the first line of the song matches with Nee dhan yen desiya geetham song but there after both are different and is well observed by any general listener. [arr] he has proved yet again..
Hi... He has proved yet again that he is still creatively alive he is best you know with two back to back albums like Bose and Rising he has discovered some new horizons of music in Indian cinema He is on journey Friends you know if any one of you have given a glimpse to history, you would come to know that with every genius it is once happened that he moved ahead of his time and same is happening here he is now in a mature phase and if you look at his last two albums as I mentioned, the Bose and Rising its technically and in content so enrich that you cant expect from any one in India with every assignment he is going further which shows that he is creatively alive Chart buster music or best selling this is some thing else Dont compare his work on that basis you know some time albums like, I dont want to mention, recently are chart busters they are so cheap and inferior that I have no words to say about that Listen if some extra ordinary piece of work by ARR is appreciated by masses, then its pretty cool but if it doesnt get that popularity as it deserved than its not the fault of ARR but of his age which doesnt understand that he is surely ahead of his time and if you are a real music lover you will se Meenaxi, Swades, the Bose and now the Rising its some thing un match able really these are ahead of his time I am sure his work will be studied again and again in near future this is not some thing to die its history mark my words.. And Rising is the best of this year And listen, in giving music in films you have not that freedom you have to be situational and also look to directors choice and story settings and some time not some times but oftenly you have to compromise because of that So guys n girls be patient hum Milay naa milay..hum rahy naa rahy..rahy gii saada yaaha pyaar kii yeh daastan sunay gy saada jisy yeh zameen aasmaan..
