2007-02-16 Thread Mary C.
I read, therefore I am confused.

I have 2 questions about this document:
http://www.bmc.com/USA/Support/attachments/BMC_DST_Summary_2007_02_15.pdf

1. For ARS 6.01 it states that the Operational Impact if not fixed is
"Web Services and Import/Export time
calculations will be off by 1 hour." Is that all that is affected?
So normal ticket updating of resolution time, Change Request Actual
Request time, etc., will NOT be affected? Only Web services, Import &
Export?

2. We use Crystal Reports integrated with Remedy. I don't know that
much about it, but does Crystal "export" the records out of Remedy?

Thanks.

Gmail sometimes decides that random entries from the list are Spam, and puts
them in that folder, which means that if you have it directed at Outlook,
you won't see those entries. Log into the gmail web interface to track
that.

Re: Get Rid of the Splash Screen on User Tool - Resolved

2007-02-16 Thread Eric Cleereman (IT)
Stephen,

Thank you for the detailed instructions. This is a great tool, and this took
care of a similar issue I was having.

I was also able to easily hide the "BC" checkbox on the date dialogs, which is
something a couple of my senior users have been wanting for awhile. The date
dialog is dialog #111. I was able to hide it by setting the Visible property
of the 1013 Check Box "BC" field to False.

Thanks again.

Today while I was testing the arssoinfo.dll and seamless logins that
splash screen kept covering up the login screen. The login screen was
"doing something" but I could not see it. After reading various posts
on the List and searching online I decided enough was enough, I had to
find a solution now.

To get rid of the splash screen:

- Install the freeware XN Resource Editor
http://www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/d10resourceeditor.htm

- Create a one-pixel monochrome bmp image in Windows Paint
(mspaint.exe).

- Make a backup copy of "C:\Program Files\AR
System\User\resdlls\0009\resusr.dll".

- Start XN Resource Editor and load the resusr.dll file above.

- Expand the "Bitmap" tree and expand the 5008 folder.

- Right-click the item inside the 5008 folder and select Delete.

- Right-click the "Bitmap" tree and select Import Image Resource.
Import the one-pixel bmp image file.

- Locate the new folder that was created. Likely it will be named 30997
and located at the bottom of the list. Rename the folder to 5008.

- Click the Save button.

- Start the Windows User Tool.

I tested this with WUT 6.3 p16, 7.0.0 p1, 7.0.1 p1 with no side effects.

Sadly the Automation interface is hobbled. If you browse the ARUSER
type library, you can see that they went to the trouble of extending it
at least three times. Besides the original COMAppObj, they added
ICOMAppObj_2 and ICOMAppObj_3. There's actually an ICOMField4 object
(recently updated to handle currency fields). But it really looks like
a series of half-hearted attempts. BTW, these extensions aren't covered
in the C API Guide. I guess they're too busy to keep up with it.

The Login method (or function) simply returns a Session object. Session
doesn't really point to a given server -- it contains only the user
name, password, and a Boolean that indicates whether you want the app
(aruser.exe) to be visible. It isn't until you try to open a form or a
guide that you must provide a server name. (No, you can't open an
application. Amazing, huh?)

Now, if memory serves me correctly, if you've already set up a user in
Remedy User, when you log in as that user, you have access to his
settings. The reason I say that is you can call the Login method and
then immediately call the GetServerList method. That method,
GetServerList, returns a Microsoftian "variant" -- which is actually an
array of server names. So I think if you've set up a user with his own
defined folder as well as servers with port and RPC settings, and then
Login as that user, when you refer to a "known" server by name it should
also pick up the correct port number. I couldn't swear to it, but I
think that's how it's supposed to work.

It's too bad we couldn't somehow blend artask.exe with the Automation
interface to aruser.exe, sort of like merging two half-a**ed tools into
a complete one.

The 7.0.01 email engine changed they way it starts. It attempts to
cache all user/group info; this takes a massive amount of cpu and memory
because it fetches 100 users at a time. There is a settings you set in
the EmailDaemon.properties to disable this behavior and restore it back
to the original behavior (evaluating user/group membership at
notification time).

com.remedy.arsys.emaildaemon.FetchUserGroupInfoOnDemand=true

Set this in EmailDaemon.properties and restart the email engine. I
think you will see this addresses your issue.

Schema ID seems to be missing in arschema - Invalid view for the schema id

2007-02-16 Thread Lammey, Peter A.
We have been working on installing and testing patch 20 on our
development server.
After we worked with our DBA on refreshing our development environment,
he indicated that one view was invalid in our development database
(B384).
He also noticed it was invalid on our production database as well.
When I looked in the arschema table on the database to find out what the
form name is, I could not find it.
I can see Schema Ids from 1 through 630 with schema id 384 skipped.

Based on the listing of forms (ordered by schemaid) I think schemaid 384
was a form that came with Change Management 5.6.
Is there any other ways I can determine what schema 384 is or was?
Does anyone have a list of all forms included with the Change Management
5.6 so that I can compare them to my listing of out of box forms?

FYI...

This appears to also be a bug in Application-Bus-Time-Add and
Application-Bus-Time-Subtract on 6.3 patch 20. After initially reading
this email I assumed it only applied to Application-Bus-Time-Diff, but I
did my own testing and all three of these functions are an hour off if
you use a timestamp that falls in the new DST range.

We've opened a ticket with BMC on this but haven't heard anything yet.
This will be a huge problem for us.

On a slightly related note - Email Engine patch 20 will generate
outbound emails with timestamps that are an hour off if you include
timestamp fields within the body of your emails. You might want to be
aware of that as well.

** WARNING: We (BMC support eng and I) believe we may have found a new
issue with the latest patch (020). In fixing the DST bug, they may have
affected (broke) an older process.

Process name Application-Bus-Time-Diff appears to now be broken.

If you want to test the process yourself, I have included the def file
here. simply copy the block of code below and paste it into a notepad
file. If you open the form +SS:Test, enter any characters into the
character field and hit save, the process attempts to perform a
calculation. On our 6.0.1 servers, it passed. On a 6.03.00 patch 020
server, it results in a popup "ARERROR [639] No Workday form could be

Cool - wait until I present it with several hundred groups and 320,000
user records. Throw that in with the CPU load that prefetching for
mid-tier adds, and we should be able to completely cripple our AR
servers. Clearly we will have to turn that "feature" off.

Re: Get Rid of the Splash Screen on User Tool - Resolved

2007-02-16 Thread Heider, Stephen
*I sent this twice this morning but has not shown up on the list. I
sent a different message afterwards which has posted. Apologies if this
is a duplicate.

We were also using the IT Masters Products which got bought up, and then

We rely heavily on the Panacea Tools to perform migrations of forms /

Currently we are taking a look at the Panacea Workflow Studio. It is a

I would appreciate it if anyone using the app would give me their views

Depends on your AD installation / configuration. For the "exchange fields" you
are referring to, are not in User but in a different object-class... here we
use:

ldap:///DC=na,DC=infineon,DC=com??sub?(objectclass=organizationalPerson)

Also ensure that the "LDAP login" used has at least read permissions to the

Hi all,
So I've been trying to implement this the right way for some
time and it just isn't working how I *THINK* it's supposed to work.

From what I've done before, you fill out the AREA LDAP, Check
the box for Cross Ref Blank Passwords and clear out the password from
all user records. This should see that the user has no password and use
the AREA record to authenticate the user right?

What happens is:
I try to login and it will let me login with my AD password.
Great
If I login with no password it will still let me login. huh?

Also if I login and I have a remedy password set there is a hit
to AD with a bad password if the password is different.
From what I read, it is supposed to check Remedy first and then
AD only if Remedy doesn't match. So I log in with the password in Remedy
and it lets me in, but it still queries against AD.

Am I missing something? Or is my config wrong? Or is my server
just jacked up heh

I'm on 6.3 Patch 20 and it does the same through both the user
tool and mid tier.

Re: Changing field database names

2007-02-16 Thread Lammey, Peter A.
My answer to these questions are as follows:

Can I change the database field name without causing an issue with the
data? I'm not deleting or replacing or changing the ID.
It should not. The key as far as I know is the Field ID. People may be
looking for the old database name when searching or from a report but it
should not prevent them from running a search using the new field name
Does a crystal report automatically pick up the field change?
A crystal report embedded into the Report form (for use in ITSM
applications) should not be impacted but if you run a Crystal Report
against the form where the field name changed (natively from Crystal)
you will need to use the Verify Database option in the "Database" menu
to update the link that Crystal has to the database. Crystal can then
pick up that there was a change and adjust the report.
Would it affect any macros that people may have created?
It should not since when macros are recorded, the fields that people add
for search macros include the Field IDs (not field names).

Subject: Changing field database names

**
Hi everyone,

Yes, this is a simplistic question but I don't have my dev server to
test it on right now because it's been upgraded. I generally don't do
this but I have been requested to change about 20 fields. It's all
right to have the field label and the field database name out of sync on
a couple of fields but that many is too many to try and remember. It
complicates imports and reporting.

The questions are:

Can I change the database field name without causing an issue with the
data? I'm not deleting or replacing or changing the ID.
Does a crystal report automatically pick up the field change?
Would it affect any macros that people may have created?

I appreciate any help you can provide,
Susan

Re: ARS 7.x - ARSSOInfo.dll

2007-02-16 Thread Heider, Stephen
Update:

Using the sample code (sent to me by Patrick Zandi) from the second pdf
below I am able to compile the arssoinfo.dll and auto-login to the
Windows User Tool. But so far this only works when you specify a TCP
Port > 0. I guess this does not work with Port Mapper???

I tested with WUT 7.0.0 p1 and 7.0.1 p1 connecting to ARS 7.0.1 and
7.0.1 p1.

Even if it will [eventually] work with Port Mapper I am not sure how
useful this will be. The username, password, and server name need to be
embedded within the arssoinfo.dll. And the password is stored in clear
text! You can see the password with a hex editor (here is a free one
http://www.chmaas.handshake.de/delphi/freeware/xvi32/xvi32.htm).

I realize there are ways to obfuscate the password, such as by storing
it encrypted and then decrypting it at the point it is requested.

Since the username/password is embedded each user will need to have a
custom compiled version of arssoinfo.dll on their computer.

Has anyone found a good use for arssoinfo.dll?

Stephen

ARSSOInfo.dll can be used to auto-login to the Windows User Tool using
AREA.

Has anyone got this to work? Do you need to have a third-party SSO
solution already in place or does ARS now provide everything needed to
auto-login (not counting the caching of passwords on the local
computer)?

Page 19 of the second pdf lists sample code written in C. I program in
other languages. Basically the only thing I know about C is that it
comes after B :) If ARS does have everything that is needed I will
probably learn C. SSO in the Windows User Tool seems to be the Holy
Grail these days.

Re: Friday Humor - Taser Test

2007-02-16 Thread Susan Palmer

That just brought an abundance of good humor into my day! It's true you
rarely hear of girls doing things like this to themselves. I do have a
story of having something done to me, on a much smaller scale, that I
thought was an accident until years later I overheard my husband relaying
the story to another guy and laughing about it. We had this old antique
lawnmower, actually an orchard mower, and my husband was tinkering with it
and asked me to put my finger to hold something down while he did
something. Next thing I know I'm getting jolted. Now nothing like what a
tazer would do but obviously something that I would remember. He claimed it
was an accident and I believed him (as a girl I do claim points for
gullibility). Then about 5 years later I overheard the true story so now I
feel compelled to remind him of that periodically ... most of you guys must
know the drill... lol

This brought back that memory again. Well, we've made it through 37 years
so far so I guess a little electricity once in a while may not be fatal
:)

Pocket Taser Stun Gun, a great gift for the wife. A guy who purchased his
lovely wife a pocket Taser for their anniversary submitted this :

Last weekend I saw something at Larry's Pistol & Pawn Shop that sparked my
interest. The occasion was our 22nd anniversary and I was looking for a
little something extra for my wife. What I came across was a 100,000-volt,
pocket/purse-sized Taser. The effects of the Taser were supposed to be short
lived, with no long-term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her
adequate time to retreat to safetyWAY TOO COOL!

Long story short, I bought the device and brought it home. I loaded two
triple-a batteries in the darn thing and pushed the button. Nothing! I was
disappointed. I learned, however, that if I pushed the button AND
pressed it against a metal surface at the same time; I'd get the blue arch
of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs. Awesome!!!

Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Betty what that burn spot is on
the face of her microwave.

Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it
couldn't be all that bad with only two triple-a batteries, right?!! There I
sat in my recliner, my cat Gracie looking on intently (trusting little
soul) while I was reading the directions and thinking that I really needed
to try this thing out on a flesh & blood moving target. I must admit I
thought about zapping Gracie (for a fraction of a second) and thought
better of it. She is such a sweet cat. But, if I was going to give this
thing to my wife to protect herself against a mugger, I did want some
assurance that it would work as advertised. Was I wrong?

So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses
perched delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, and
Taser in another. The directions said that a one-second burst would
shock and disorient your assailant; a two-second burst was supposed to
cause muscle spasms and a major loss of bodily control; a three-second burst
would purportedly make your assailant flop on the ground like a fish out of
water. Any burst longer than three seconds would be wasting the batteries.

All the while I'm looking at this little device measuring about 5" long,
less than 3/4 inch in circumference; pretty cute really and loaded with two
itsy, bitsy triple-a batteries) thinking to myself, "no possible way!"
What happened next is almost beyond description, but I'll do my best...

I'm sitting there alone, Gracie looking on with her head cocked to one
side as to say, "don't do it master," reasoning that a one-second burst!
from such a tiny little ole thing couldn't hurt all that bad.. I decided
to give myself a one-second burst just for the heck of it. I touched the
prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button, and

HOLY MOTHER OF GOD, WEAPONS OF MASS [EMAIL PROTECTED]@$$!%<[EMAIL
PROTECTED]@$$!%25>
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm pretty sure Jessie Ventura ran in through the side door, picked me up
in the recliner, then body slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and
over again. I vaguely recall waking up on my side in the fetal position,
with tears in my eyes, body soaking wet, both nipples on fire, testicles
nowhere to be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest
position, and tingling in my legs. The cat was standing over me making
meowing sounds I had never heard before, licking my face, undoubtedly
thinking to herself, "do it again, do it again!"

Note: If you ever feel compelled to "mug" yourself with a Taser, one note
of caution: there is no such thing as a one-second burst when you zap
yourself. You will not let go of that thing until it is dislodged from
your hand by a violent thrashing

Re: Question: Password Reset

Tyrone,

We created a "Dispatcher" permissions group. Added "Dispatcher"
permissions to those individuals on the Help Desk. Then added the
"Dispatcher" permissions group to the Password field on the User form.
The Help Desk folks can then make password changes without needing admin
permissions.

Re: Older Business time process broken by patch 020?

2007-02-16 Thread Hall Chad - chahal

On a 6.03.00 patch 020
server, it results in a popup "ARERROR [639] No Workday form could be
found on the server"

Good luck, and if anyone else out there has run into this, PLEASE let me

Re: Why not to change Status values?

2007-02-16 Thread Dave Barber

If its for specific business reasons, then you may have to change it.

A few years back, I had to change the status values on our change management
application - they had been setup incorrectly in the first place (sequence
didn't match the actual process flow, which made reporting awkward), and the
business requirements had changed way beyond what had been original
required. Thankfully it was only change lite, and there was very little
workflow to be changed.

I just wish I'd known about rrrSelectionChange and ARInside prior to making
the changes though, it was an incredibly irritating change to make,
especially as I had to do it at home, late on an evening ...

Regards

Dave

also do field specific checks to make sure they are not doing wildcard QBE

Note: If you ever feel compelled to "mug" yourself with a Taser, one note of
caution: there is no such thing as a one-second burst when you zap yourself.
You will not let go of that thing until it is dislodged from
your hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor. A three second burst would
be considered conservative.

SON-OF-A-... that hurt like hell!!! A minute or so later (I can't be sure, as
time was a relative thing at that point), collected my wits (what little I had
left), sat up and surveyed the landscape. My bent reading glasses
were on the mantel of the fireplace. How! did they up get there??? My triceps,
right thigh and both nipples were still twitching. My face felt like it had
been shot up with Novocain, and my bottom lip weighed 88
lbs. I'm still looking for my testicles? I'm offering a significant reward for
their safe return.

Re: Question: %

2007-02-16 Thread Carey Matthew Black

Tyrone,

 While I like Christopher's "Get-R-Done" attitude, I think there
might be alternatives to that exact approach. :)

I would suggest that some education is required. But understand that
the education might be needed by the Administrator/Developer. :) There
are times that the application needs to grow to expand to a new
requirement that has yet to be defined for the Developer. And there
are times that the users need to be told to "click on that tab... yes
the one that says *categorize* to set the category for the ticket"
too.

Find what there business need is, and if there is a better way to do
what they are trying to do before you reach a conclusion about what
they are doing. Sometimes a simple application change can save them
hours of work. Sometimes a simple "Clue-By-Four" can save the system a
lot of work too. :)

Re: Question: Password Reset

2007-02-16 Thread Lammey, Peter A.
You can download BFS Password Manager (Bruce F. Sisk developed the
tool).
This tool has some dialog forms and other forms that can allow you to
setup password rules and password expiration rules as well.

The Password reset form that is included can allow certain users (with
certain permissions) the ability to reset the password for other users.
The permissioned user does not need to be an admin.

Re: System not recognizing my login

2007-02-16 Thread Dwayne Martin
Thanks, Joe. I am in the process of trying to get LDAP to
work, so LDAP could easily be part of the problem. However, I
do have a special Remedy password, and when I go in as guest
user I see "*" in my password field.

Could I have accidentally set it so it is trying to use LDAP
(which isn't set up yet) even tho I have entered a password?

Re: Anyone tried BMC Remedy User or Admin 7.0 on Windows Vista??

2007-02-16 Thread Hugo Visser

He didn't say Mid-Tier doesn't work on Vista, what he's saying that it is
not a supported configuration. Mid-Tier is currently working fine on an XP
system, also not supported. Saying that developers will be "unable" to
develop on Vista doesn't make sense at all and is most likely not true.

A WUT in Java would be nice (would that become a JUT then?) but I don't see
how that's connected to the supported or unsupported nature of the server
components. Even if everything was written in Java you'd still want to have
a "supported platforms" list.

works
on Visa (or XP, Solaris, or Linux, or Win2k, etc.). Surely the 'target
use'
(client/server) for an operating system is quite independent of the JVM
that's probably identical whether it's running on XP, Win2k or Vista.

I guess this means Remedy developers who (quite correctly) run a local
Midtier
for development, will be unable to develop on the most modern Microsoft
operating system?

The most useful step forward for BMC is to rewrite the WUT in Java so it
will
operate on all platforms, regardless of operating system or architecture.

Workflow \ Performance \ Migration Tools

2007-02-16 Thread Webster, Basil
Hi All,

Since Master AR Suite was dropped we have been looking for an app \ tool
to aid in migrations, comparisons, finding workflow, documentation etc.
Currently we are taking a look at the Panacea Workflow Studio. It is a
big plus that they can give an evaluation on performance of workflow. We
are finding that this has become an issue and therefore an all in one
package is an advantage.

I would appreciate it if anyone using the app would give me their views
(pro's and cons), whether you think it lacks anything. On the other
hand, if there is anyone that is able to compare it to any other app or
suggest another app, please feel free to let me know. You are welcome to
mail me directly.

Have a great weekend.

Regards,
