FW: ITSM Issue with Sandbox Enablement

2009-01-28 Thread Ben Chernys
Hi Folks

I am having a ticket raised with BMC for this one but I just thought I'd pass
it to the list for any thoughts that may come my way. It has me in a bit of a
quandary and I thank anyone that can help me resolve it or work-around it.

I have placed the log zip file (88KB) here because the list software blocks my

Betreff:ITSM Issue with Sandbox Enablement

When we use the Sandbox feature (btw I had to put a fix in for our Geman
clients - Sandbox enablement is ignored if you are not running an English
client - any attributes (of our hand-constructed classes using default Admin
defined field ids) that are NOT in BaseElement (or rather
BMC.CORE:BMC_MainFrame) do NOT get pushed to the Sandbox instance.

The Sandbox job has NULL Defer = Yes in the OOTB job. I can see why. If you
turn this off (which is a bug that the OOTB is NOT off - restricting you from
nullifying an attribute and then causing a mis-match between the two instances
in the datasets) what happens is all the non-BaseElement (MF) attributes become
NULL even when they are not touched.

I believe the error is manifested by the filter ASI:SHR:All_600_PushToBMCForm
which uses a sample schema where the push target is in a DO field. The filter
has the by ID check-box checked. The Log describes the fields pushed and
those target fields include those fields for the real target schema but the
values for these fields are all null. Have you seen this behaviour? You should
notice it if you take any class which other than BMC_Mainframe and change an
attribute from that class (which field id is NOT in BMC_Mainframe).

The problem is isolated to retrieving the values of fields as the target fields
seem to be complete. I have checked the database (filter_push) and will need to
have a play with the API to see what actually is set for a by like idpush
fields. It is possible, I suppose, to build a better sample form with all of
our and OOTB field ids in it.

As far as I can tell there will be two work-arounds possible: 1) a better
sample form. or 2) a filter for each class replacing the single filter above.

The conclusion or direction has changed since I implemented the following test.
I replaced the above filter with one using the exact form that was
participating in the Push Fields. Same effect. It now looks that this
SandboxCreate CI Name causes untraced actions in the hiddent Invoke External
Filter CMDB Processes and that it is likely that the error is there.

I have attached a client trace file (AL, Filter, SQL, API). We have turned off
(deactivated) any non-OOTB filters. The ASI:SHR:All_600_PushToBMCForm has been
changed to specify the same form as the value of the OS Schema field in the
trace.

Hi All,

I am starting to like the new Developer Studio(DS). :) But facing one
problem currently.

I am trying to add permissions to objects on the DS, but when i click on
expand button next to the permissions, it doesnt open up anything. Is this
working fine for others?

FYI.. I am trying to use DS for checking against 7.0.01 version Remedy
server. This might be cause of the problem. not sure.

Re: Crystal Reports and Mid-Tier license issue

2009-01-28 Thread Bilinski, John
We just went through the purchasing BOXI license process for our new
BOXI server and they are not cheap. SAP just bought out Business Objects
and changed the licensing model. There are not more Fixed and Floating
User licenses, according to our rep if you are standing up the BO
Crystal Enterprise Server XI. You now have to purchase CPU licenses for
each CPU for each application server. We purchased 2 because the price
jumped signifgantly last June.

CPU Licenses allow unlimited access to the Application server were BOXI
is installed. If you try to call them to get new licenses they will tell
you that you will need to purchase CPU licenses, or at least that is
what they made us do. If they tell you other wise I would like to know.

license would allow access at all time?

What if you set up Guest access on the BOXI server? Give the Guest user
a named license... won't that work?

Hi folks. Does anyone know a workaround to using concurrent licensing on
BOXI R2 and the midtier? It seems that every time a report is fetched
it uses a license, so even though its the same account being used
everytime any reports are fetched back to back the 10 licenses we have
run out fairly quick before they are dropped. This causes errors such
as the following:

Failed to Process the Request!!
An Error occured at the Server: All of your systems 10 concurrent
access licenses are in use at this time.

Thanks

RESOLVED Re: Server Ports and Queues

I checked my host this morning and two new threads started. So I guess it
just didn't need them at the time I increased the maximum.

In the past I thought you could increase the maximum number of Fast and
List threads and those new threads would spawn almost immediately. When
the server needed a new thread they would create one. I understand a restart
would be necessary to decrease the maximum.

On my current hosts the threads appear to be maxed out. A quick look at SQL
logging by thread and all have been created and all are working hard. So I
increased the maximum number of each from 6 to 8 but I have not seen the new
threads start up. Nothing in the arthread log and no new TIDs in the SQL
 logs.

Does 7.1 require a restart in order for the settings to take effect or does
the server just no think they are needed?

 Thank you

Hi Rakshit,

It works fine. In the property column, when you click on the Permissions'
expand button, two lines appears, Permissions and Allow any user to submit.
If you click on Permissions in the value column, the permission's dialog box
will appear, and you will be able to manage them.

Re: Floating User License Ratio

2009-01-28 Thread Misi Mladoniczky
Hi all,

I just want to add that there is a free test-version that will show you
how many licenses you can free by optimizing.

The test-version will also show you the exact ratio that is optimum for
your specific system.

All you need is a user-log of 1-6 weeks from your server.

Best Regards - Misi, RRR AB, http://www.rrr.se

Products from RRR Scandinavia:
* RRR|License - Not enough Remedy licenses? Save money by optimizing.
* RRR|Log - Performance issues or elusive bugs? Analyze your Remedy logs.
* RRR|Translator - Manage and automate your language translations.
Find these products, and many free tools and utilities, at http://rrr.se.

Use RRR|LicenseMonitor to see how many you need. Its not free, but it
easily pays for itself and then some. If you're considering buying more
licenses its well worth it to let RRR analyze your user usage to see
what mix of fixed/floating you really need. Who knows, maybe you have
seldom-used fixed licenses you can exchange to get more floaters.

Resolved: Remedy User Suddenly Crashing for Multiple Users

2009-01-28 Thread Sokol, Brian
The problem was caused when certain users did not have permissions to a
field on the SHR:People form. That field was part of the results list. I
would think that if they did not have permissions to a field in the
results list then the field would not be displayed. It should not crash
Remedy user. This is how it worked on the Mid Tier. The results list
pulled up without that field.

Thanks all.

Are you searching directly in the form for data or is this some kind of
lookup/workflow?

If you are searching for record in something like Help Desk, Change, etc
maybe it isn't the last name Murphy but the first record that comes up
when that query is run. Maybe try a search using the Records ID for the
first record that is returned using the Murphy query. I too have seen
some corruption in a record consistently crash a the client.

Brian,

I remember a problem a few years back when the 5.6 User tool
would crash if the record being returned had a corrupted attachment in
it. We got around it by upgrading the User Tool to the newer version
(at the time I think it was 6.x), loading the corrupted record, and
deleting the attachment. Since you have already upgraded the User Tool
on some and they are fine, I would have someone with the newly installed
version bring up Murphy and see if there is an attachment on the
record. If there is, then save the attachment locally, and have one of
the affected users try to open the same record and see if the problem is
resolved.

Hope this helps.

I think the normal recommendation is to use the relevant version of the admin

You can have different versions of the admin and user tools on a PC - I've had

Re: Printing

2009-01-28 Thread Barber, David
This seems to describe the general way printing happens on the WUT.

Have tried it on versions from 5.1.2 onwards, and its generally been close to
useless. It either gives inconsisten results, or prints off a garbled mess.

Maybe its much improved on v7.5?

do it two or three times. It appears to very sporadic and random in

Solaris 10 and Remedy ARS

2009-01-28 Thread ccrashh
We had an interesting problem with a test envirornment. Even if we
set the ar.conf file to register with the portmapper, we got an
RPCBind error (Authentication Failure). We discovered that the latest
version of Solaris uses some different settings. We found the
following solution at
http://www.mail-archive.com/arsperl-us...@arsperl.org/msg00610.html:

1. the portmapper (rpcbind) is under the control of the Service
Management
Facility (SMF) on solaris10. SMF seems (to me, at least) very
bloated with
lots of gratuitous stuff, including properties. One of the
properties for
rpc/bind is config/local_only which apparently controls whether the
portmapper can be reached from other hosts. It was set to true, so
other
hosts were out of luck. I set it to false using:

  svccfg -s svc:/network/rpc/bind
  svc:/network/rpc/bind setprop config/local_only = false
  svc:/network/rpc/bind quit

  svcadm refresh svc:/network/rpc/bind

2. the 2nd cause was also related to a property, config/
enable_tcpwrappers,
which was set to true, meaning access to rpcbind was filtered by
tcpwrappers,
so I added a line to /etc/hosts.allow as follows:

  rpcbind: ALL

And made sure /etc/hosts.allow was readable by rpcbind (chmod 644
/etc/hosts.allow).

Just a heads up.

Microsoft SMS via AIE

2009-01-28 Thread Matt Worsdell
All

Last time I had to do an integration into MS SMS it was back in the days
of v5 and EIE. The integration was terribly slow and in the end we
reverted to the SQL adapter fo performance reasons.

Can anyone comment on the performance of the Discovery Service for SMS
adapter, preferably someone who had experience of the old adapter also.

Re: ITSM Issue with Sandbox Enablement

2009-01-28 Thread Lyle Taylor
In my last position we struggled and fought with the Sandbox for quite a while,
finding issues here and there, and finally came to the conclusion that the
Sandbox provides no real value as it is currently implemented (at least ITSM
pre-7.5, I haven’t see how they’ve changed it there yet), is fatally flawed in
a few different ways and just caused more headaches than it was worth. In the
end, we decided to simply turn it off, and I would recommend the same unless
you have a specific need for it.

In my opinion, the only real and valid benefit that could be obtained from a
Sandbox would be as a staging area to make changes that are to be applied to
the Gold dataset at a later time. The Sandbox implemented in CMDB 2.1 and
earlier does not work this way. It is merely a pass-through dataset that gets
immediately reconciled into Gold. As such, I see no benefit in using it. You
could argue that it gives you the ability to limit what kinds of changes a
person can make to Gold by changing the reconciliation rules. However, I would
argue that if you don’t want someone to change something, because you have a
better (automated) source for the information, a more appropriate solution
would be to simply not let them change it in the first place via an active link
or something that makes the field read only. It is extremely poor user
interaction design to let someone make a change and save it, only to wonder why
it didn’t take effect afterward.

I know this isn’t what you were looking for, but after everything I went
through trying to correctly use the Sandbox, I would recommend to just about
anyone to leave it be and turn it off until its design and implementation get
fixed.

Good luck,
Lyle

2009-01-28 Thread Lyle Taylor
That said, I've been experimenting with using the 7.5 tool with AR 7.1 and
haven't had issues for the most part yet. The only issue I had was probably
due to a minor bug in DS rather than the fact that I was using it with a 7.1
server. What happened is that I had a table in a page, and I went to add a
column to the table. When I added the column the hold page holder and
everything in it disappeared. I went back and made that particular change in
the 7.1 admin tool (which you can run fine right next to DS) and then continued
on in DS and everything was OK.

Brian,

I think the normal recommendation is to use the relevant version of the admin
tool to the server in use - ie. for a 7.1 server use the 7.1 admin tool.

You can have different versions of the admin and user tools on a PC - I've had
v5.1.2, v6.3 and v7 clients running on the same desktop.

I totally agree with Lyle.

It just does not make sense to have a sandbox that will be immediately
reconciled to production dataset. Besides restricting the updates via
permissions or field properties, I would add that enabling auditing on the
fields that can be updated is a good complement, from a control/audit
perspective. So with access control and auditing, you really don't need a

In the Admin Tool help, there is this table:

CREATE Set when creating a request. Submit New
DELETE Set when deleting a request. Delete
DIALOG Set when opening a form as a dialog box.Dialog
GET Set when retrieving a request for display. Get Display

QUERY Set when searching for requests.Search
SET Set when modifying a request. Modify Modify
SET ALL Set when a Push Fields action that is configured to modify all matching

As you can see, what I want the filter to do is to run when retrieving a
request for display. Therefore it recommends using GET for this. QUERY
could be used if I was searching for multiple requests but I am actually trying
to GET a request.

Re: ITSM Issue with Sandbox Enablement

2009-01-28 Thread Ben Chernys
Thanks Guys,

I agree with you. I noticed the part that doesn't make sense but believe it or
not I have a reasonable reason for using it. As for auditing, we've had our
share of issues with it but are (over) using it.

I disabled the delete activity in the Sandbox reconciliation job so that when a
CI in Production (Gold?) is touched by a person, I can have our standard
reconciliation job basically use the equal Sandbox CI at a higher precedence
and then more or less cancel the normal discovered CI in the recon job. When
that normal discovered CI has caught up to the human modified CI, in a set of
configured fields I might add, then the Sandbox CI is deleted and the CI is no
longer human modified and participates in reconciliation updates as normal. I
also cannot add an attribute indicating the human modification state to
BaseElement.

The Sandbox indeed makes no sense whatsoever as implemented with the OOTB
workflow. The Updated CI is pushed (supposedly) to the Sandbox, and then
immediately reconciled to production AND deleted from Sandbox. Also note the
comments about the NULL Option in the OOTB Job. This may be there to cover the
issue I encountered below.

We now have a ticket with BMC but alas, I am going to have to do something to
make it work sooner than I expect a response or a fix. Perhaps the Overlay
feature works better?

Cheers
Ben

Subject: Re: $OPERATION$ = GET on Get Filter

In the Admin Tool help, there is this table:

$OPERATION$ value Description Filter execution conditions Form mode
CREATE Set when creating a request. Submit New
DELETE Set when deleting a request. Delete
DIALOG Set when opening a form as a dialog box.Dialog
GET Set when retrieving a request for display. Get Display
MERGE Set when merging requests. Merge
QUERY Set when searching for requests.Search
SET Set when modifying a request. Modify Modify SET ALL Set when a Push
Fields action that is configured to modify all matching requests modifies a
request. Modify Modify All

As you can see, what I want the filter to do is to run when retrieving a
request for display. Therefore it recommends using GET for this. QUERY
could be used if I was searching for multiple requests but I am actually
trying to GET a request.

Thats not right.. QUERY is the correct keyword. Where did you read it
was GET? Look at the ar.h header file and you will see QUERY is
 defined as the OPERATION keyword.

No, Query does not work. Again, I want this to work on a Get Entry
Filter, Query works on active links for form mode only.

The AR 7.0 workflow objects doc says to use GET keyword on get entry
filters. QUERY keyword is not supported in filters.

 Thanks.

Re: ITSM Issue with Sandbox Enablement

2009-01-28 Thread Lyle Taylor
Ben,

You said something that I would like clarification on:

any attributes (of our hand-constructed classes using default Admin defined
field ids)

(italics added) Just to be certain I’m understanding things correctly, did you
create these classes using the CMDB console using the functionality there for
creating classes and adding attributes to them, or did you do any of this work
in the Admin tool? While I haven’t added any new classes, I have added a fair
number of attributes to existing classes (although we used IDs specified from a
specific range of IDs that we were using, rather than letting the system
auto-assign IDs), and we never had a problem with the system not bringing these
attributes into the sandbox, which is something that I think should be someone
analogous to what you’re trying to do in the end. While I’m not an expert on
what happens when you use a sample schema, I would expect that the fact that
“by ID” is selected, it should bring across all fields with matching IDs
regardless of whether or not they’re in the sample schema – which it seem would
have to be the case or the majority of the OOB classes would have this same
issue.

Well, I guess there’s no useful information in the paragraph above. I guess I
really just want to confirm that the classes were all created using the CMDB
console exclusively, and that any AST forms used to work with those classes
were created using the CMDB2Asset utility so that the IDs of the fields on the
asset forms and the CMDB forms all match up, regardless of whether they’re OOB
or custom.

Cheers

I totally agree with Lyle.

It just does not make sense to have a sandbox that will be immediately
reconciled to production dataset. Besides restricting the updates via
permissions or field properties, I would add that enabling auditing on the
fields that can be updated is a good complement, from a control/audit
perspective. So with access control and auditing, you really don't need a
sandbox, and you are going to gain a lot in terms of reducing complexity,
maintenance, etc.

pre-7.5, I haven’t see how they’ve changed it there yet), is fatally flawed in
a few different ways and just caused more headaches than it was worth. In the
end, we decided to simply turn it off, and I would recommend the same unless
you have a specific need for it.

In my opinion, the only real and valid benefit that could be obtained from a

the Gold dataset at a later time. The Sandbox implemented in CMDB 2.1 and

Just commenting -- I think it is a bad move to include username/
password in the URL.

Even if the username/password is limited to only handling the one form
-- it seems amateurish and I think people see that in their URL and
have a nervous feeling about following the link.

You may want to take a look at Kinetic Survey (built on ARS - but does

Hum...

The compatibility matrix suggest that SLM 7.1 is compatible with AR System 7.5.

I am sure it could be possible that a patch for SLM 7.1 might be
needed to make it work with ITSM 7.5. However, I wonder if there is an
install option to install SLM 7.1 without integrating to ITSM so that
you could at least get it installed. ( Then implement a custom
integration based on your needs to ITSM 7.5.)

But you likely will take more time to finish that custom integration
than to wait for SLM 7.5 to be released. :(

On the other hand...

You might opt for ITSM 7.0.3 w/SLM 7.1 on an AR System 7.5 Server.
That looks like it is fully on the matrix to me. ( And I would hope
than an upgrade of the applications [ITSM and SLM] would be possible
later. )

Subject: Developer Studio 7.5

**

Hi All,

I am starting to like the new Developer Studio(DS). :) But facing
 one problem currently.

I am trying to add permissions to objects on the DS, but when i
click on expand button next to the permissions, it doesnt open up anything.
Is this working fine for others?

FYI.. I am trying to use DS for checking against 7.0.01 version
Remedy server. This might be cause of the problem. not sure.

Regards,

Rakshit

Re: Opening a record through a Mid-Tier URL

2009-01-28 Thread patchsk
You can do something like this.

Create two temp fields( Here for ex: Name: field1 id = 536870924,
Name: field2 id = 536870923 )
And use a url like below

http://midtier.providence.org/arsys/servlet/ViewFormServlet?form=IS+Surveyview=Dialogserver=arsprodusername=SurveyEntrypwd=surveyF536870924=testerF536870923=017

And have a open window active link on window load,
RunIF:  $CLIENT-TYPE$ = 9 AND 'field1' = tester AND 'field2' != $NULL
$
OpenWindow :
Form Name: your survery form
Display Type: Detail Only
Window Type: Display
 where $field2$ = 'RequestID'

possibility of Server group without load balancer?

2009-01-28 Thread patchsk
We are planning to upgrade our arsystem form single server to a server
group.
I went through the white paper and the following question still
remained as unclear
Can someone give information on what is the role of a load balancer in
a server group.
Can we have a server group with out load balancer ?
What we gain/loose with/without load balancer in a server group.

Current: ARSystem 6.3, solaris, oracle, db on same box as arserver

Upgrate: ARSystem7.1, solaris, oracle, two to four arservers, db on a
remote box.

Also is there anyone planning to use or any thoughts on AR7.5 in 64
bit, heared this new version can support 64bit.
Our current arserverd crashing once the process reaches close to 4 gb
ram.

Thanks in Advance
