Re: DSO with Different Data Type

2010-01-06 Thread Rajendra Kapale
Hi,

Yes DSO custom mapping supports different data types for source and
destination fields. If source and destination data types are different, DSO
converts the field value from source data type to destination data type.

Thanks,
Rajendra

Hello Listers,

ARServer 7.1 Patch 4
MS SQL Server 2005

Has anyone used server A to watch for outages on server B?

Since we do have slow periods overnight the production server has occasionally
been knocked offline and panic sets in a 5AM when the day shift comes on.
It always just takes a ARSystem Portmapper restart to get things going again.
I'd like to set up something with the development server, which seems to be
unaffected, to periodically ping the production server and perform X if it gets
no response.
Like Query a form on production every 30 minutes between Midnight and 5 AM.
No reply of a known value will either: (In order of preference)

 1. Restart the services on Production and send an email to let everyone know
that a restart happened.
 2. Email the Admin (me)
 3. Email the operations team with instructions on restarting the services.
(Operations people don't like to restart things because they get blamed for
unrelated breakage.)

I tend to agree. I recently performed an ARS upgrade for a customer on HD
5.6. We stopped at ARS 7.1 for that reason. I don't KNOW that they won't
work together, but I wasn't interested in finding out the hard way. Also
check to see if any plugins you are using will port over.

I believe the authentication API changed from ARS 5 to 7 - take that into
account as well. We had some minor issues with the Email forms, too.

Alternately you could even use the Services Manager on the server to restart
the service on consecutive failures.. There are option for that on the
service properties configuration.

If that is not ideal a batch job can also be written to restart a service
periodically using the net stop service name in double quotes followed by
a net start service name

Re: CMDB 2.0 Class

2010-01-06 Thread Lyle Taylor
The database server and that database are not the same thing, as a database
server can potentially host multiple databases. The database server is indeed
a software server, but the database instance itself is a separate logical
entity that is managed/used/controlled by the database server. I model them
using the Database class and relate that to the software server that hosts the
database. For example, you could have a SQL Server represented by a
SoftwareServer class, and then every separate database instance hosted by that
SQL Server (the database software, not the machine) would be an instance of the
Database class related back to that SoftwareServer (e.g., a Dependency). You
could potentially also use the DatabaseStorage class which represents the
physical storage used by the database, but unless you actually care about
modeling and tracking the storage for the database separately, you're probably
better off just using Database.

Having said all that, what you use will depend on the level of detail that you
are trying to capture. If all you want to say is that Application X depends on
Database Y, but you don't care about whether it's Oracle, SQL Server, etc.,
then you probably could just use the Database class and not worry about the
Software Server class. If you want to track your database server software and
keep track of what databases are hosted by which servers, then you will want to
use both classes. If you're storage is stored on SANs or the like, then you
may also want to use the DatabaseStorage class so that you can store more
information about your database's storage allocation, etc. and easily relate it
to things like the actual disk array the storage is on, etc.

Does that make any more sense?

Hello All,

I have a list of database instances that I will be associating with servers.
What table would database instances be stored in? Would the database instance
be stored in AST:SoftwareServer table?

I read that database servers are modeled a an instance of the
BMC_SoftwareServer class.

It is getting confusing.

Are databases servers considered software servers? I am not sure how to
classify the database instances.

Re: CMDB 2.0 Class

2010-01-06 Thread Lyle Taylor
We have a habit of calling the machine a database server, because that's its
primary purpose. However, the machine is just a computer system that runs a
software server that hosts a database. If you keep that distinction in mind,
then BMC's recommendation makes a lot of sense. The actual physical machine is
a ComputerSystem. The running database software (SQL Server, Oracle, etc.) is
a SoftwareServer. Each database instance hosted by a particular software
server is a Database.

The way you decide to model it really depends on how you view it and what level
of detail you want to track. If each physical server only hosts a single
instance of a database server, and you don't care about tracking the details
about the database software (e.g., version, patch level, etc.), then it can be
convenient to effectively put the two together and track both as simply a
Computer System. However, if you have a single physical server that hosts
multiple database servers, and you want to track that fact as well as
additional information about those servers, then you need to separate things
out into different classes. In that case, your class list would probably look
more like what I outlined above.

I made all servers (including DB servers) part of BMC_ComputerSystem
My databases are under BMC_Database

Yes, BMC recommends using BMC_SoftwareServer for database servers. Not sure the
logic here..

I imported my assets to the BMC.CORE:BMC_ forms (join). This join form
will join the BMC_BaseElement form w/ the correct form.
I did NOT use AST: forms.

Re: ARServer Status monitor

2010-01-06 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
When you restarted portmapper it actually stopped and restarted the AR System
Server service as well. I don't think it was portmapper that was the problem.

It looks like your problem is that the AR Server is losing connection to the
SQL Server. How about trying something like an Escalation that runs every x
minutes and does a SQL query to the database. Something like: Select COUNT(*)
from ARSCHEMA.

This would make a call to the database and keep that connection alive.

Jason,

The Service looked like it was running but there were entries in the error.log
file that pointed to a dropped network connection or DB unavailable.
General network error. Check your network documentation. (SQL Server 11)
SQL Server does not exist or access denied. (SQL Server 17)
Cannot open database ARSystem requested by the login. The login failed. (SQL
Server 4060)

Then all night long the error.log was filled with
Dispatch : Timeout during database query -- consider using more specific search
criteria to narrow the results, and retry the operation (servername removed)
ARERR - 94
Distrib : Timeout during database query -- consider using more specific search
criteria to narrow the results, and retry the operation (ARERR 94)

This happened every 6 minutes until they called me at 6 AM and I kick started
the Portmapper.
Thanks,

Re: ARServer Status monitor

2010-01-06 Thread Jason Miller
Ah, I used to have a 7.1 servers that would do that. The app and db server
were plugged into the same darn switch but they would lose connection.
Fortunately it was short enough that ARS usually recovered with no issue. I
am surprise that a restart of Portmapper would resolve the issue.

Do you have DSO? You could check available by transferring records. If not
you could create a web service that does a simple query against a small form
on prod and then have an Escalation on dev that would call the web service.
If there is an error you could have dev perform whatever action you wish.
This would include the Mid-Tier as a point of failure but maybe you want to
make sure that MT is responding at the same time?

Another idea would be to call runmacro from an Escalation on the dev server
to try export a small set of records from prod. You can then either parse
the return for error messages or if no file was created assume that the
server is down.

Look at the sc (Service Control) command to start/stop remote services.

Jason

Re: HD5.5 to HD5.6 upgrade

2010-01-06 Thread Mark Wilson
I'm running ARS6.3 and HD5.5 on Solaris. I don't think HD5.6 runs the RAPP
service I know HD5.5 doesn't. I actually have a test instance of ARS7.5 and
HD5.6 running. I haven't tested extensively but email is working and basic
ticket creation is working. Basically I'm looking for the HD5.5 to HD5.6
upgrade script so I don't have to manually bring my customizations into
HD5.6. The HD5.6 documentation indicates that it should be there. I just
thought someone on the list might have a copy of it.

** Hi Mark,

What version of ARS are you currently running?
HD 5.6 still uses the RAPP service, correct? I have my doubts that the RAPP
service will work with ARS 7.5. You may or may not need the RAPP service
but it is something to consider.

for us. Maybe next year we can look at going with the full blown Atrium CMDB

Issues in SLM 7.0.3

2010-01-06 Thread viswa kumar
Dear ARSList,

ARS Version : 7.1.00 Patch 006
SLM Version : 7.0.03

We are facing some issues in SLM 7.0.3, like to check any of you have any
information\experienced this issues:

1) When the Incident is created in Pending state directly, the SLA
status is moved to Pending state but after 15 min (15 is the Goal set for
this SLA) the Status is getting changed to “Missed Goal” which causes the
SLA to Missed though it’s in Pending state. The SLA is configured to Exclude
Status = Pending.

It Appears this issue is fixed in SLM 7.1 patch 002 .

2) This issue is related to the First one, the Milestones for the SLAs
are also firing though the Status is Pending. This is happening even the
Incident is created with any other state (New\Assigned) and then moved to
Pending as well. I think we need to add the “Exclude if” condition in the
Milestones also. Will that help ?

3) While calculating the Compliance for the Monthly review period, the
Compliance is not considering the Incidents that are in Met state, its
counting only the Missed records. In Development Server this is getting
calculated correctly but not in production. But the Service target\SLA
configuration is the same in both the servers.

Appreciate your help and please let me know if you have any related
information. THANKS ARSList!!

Thanks,
Viswa
