Re: white paper AR Server in a clustered server envir onm ent?

2010-05-03 Thread P Romain ARSlist
Can I ask why you want to use a Windows cluster?

We have one running (ITSM 7, CMDB 2.1) but since one server is always off
(as far as Remedy is concerned) it seems like a waste of a computer.

We are soon to remove the cluster and replace it with a server group so that
both computers can be used together to improve performance.

Cheers

Peter

**

Hi Fellow Listers

Does anyone have any experience in setting up ARS 7.5/CMDB+ITSM7.6 on a
windows cluster. We are using 2008 server.

Alternatively, does anyone have the white paper called AR Server in a
clustered server environment? I searched all over the BMC support site +
communities and only found Kelly Deavers excellent presentation, which
unfortunately does not cover clusters.

Thanks in advance.

Re: MAPI client other then Outlook for a win 2003 server

2010-05-03 Thread ARSList
To test IMAPI you can just telnet to the IMAPI port 143

ie
telnet myexchangeserver 143

and if it is all working you will see something like OK IMAP ready.

Exchange supports POP3 if you prefer to use that - just get your Exchange
admin to enable it - I think it is as simple as running a pop3 service.

And as suggested you use SMTP as your outgoing port.

To test that just telnet to port 25 on your Exchange server.

eg
telnet myexchangeserver 25
HELO yourdomoanname
MAIL FROM youremail
RCPT TO destinationemail
DATA
some text
.

last bit is dot on its own line.

If all that works oyur Exchange server is fine. Do whatever you do in
remedy.

No, but there's not much to it, IMAP is a standard mailbox protocol
and
supported by Exchange (I suppose so long as your administrators have
  enabled
it). Basically, you just configure the Mailbox in Remedy (for
incoming
mail) to use IMAP as the protocol, enter the username and password for
  the
account you want to monitor and associate it with the correct outgoing
mailbox in Remedy. For outgoing mail, you generally just use standard
  SMTP
which Exchange also supports, entering your Exchange server as the
SMTP
server. You'll need to ask your Exchange admins if IMAP support is
  enabled
in Exchange and if Remedy can send mail to port 25 on the Exchange
  server.
Some places have separate e-mail relay servers for sending e-mail (you
receive incoming e-mail using IMAP to the Exchange server, but send
  outgoing
mail to another SMTP server), but that is not an issue either. You
just
would need to find out from you e-mail admins what SMTP server to use
for
   sending e-mail.

I don't know if that's very helpful, but it really is fairly straight
forward (or at least, it should be). It's much more straightforward
than
trying to get MAPI to work - at least in my experience.

Yes, it is a Display Only form. Sorry, I should have mentioned that.

I'll probably take your regular form template suggestion. I have about 4 pages

would be cleared.

Even though I would have to create the regular form and create all of the
fields (with the same id's), it would be better than creating a set fields
active link (4 or 5 of them) and having 50 or 60 set Field to $Null$ for each

I just wish there was a process that I could run, but that was just wishful

You should be able to easily copy the fields from your display only form to
your new regular form . . .It doesn't matter that the fields, when copied, will

need to pretty up the regular form unless absolutely necessary. I would just

2010-05-03 Thread William Abdo
Hi Lisa,
I am sure you know all of this, however, I will just say it anyway.
If you decide to copy all the fields to a normal form and you copy the Display
only fields to a regular form, you have a chance to change them to regular
field properties before you save. If not they will remain Display Only there
also.

If you choose to stay with the display only form, you could add the old reset
button that calls the active link to restore the fields to what you set them to
on the open form command when you first open the form.
That way the users have a restart point if needed.

There are many ways to go here.

Lisa,
You should be able to easily copy the fields from your display only form to
your new regular form . . .It doesn't matter that the fields, when copied, will
remain display only. Obviously, you won't need the page fields and you won't
need to pretty up the regular form unless absolutely necessary. I would just
copy the fields over and be done with it.

Yes, it is a Display Only form. Sorry, I should have mentioned that.

I'll probably take your regular form template suggestion. I have about 4 pages
that could be clicked and every time they lose focus, I would like everything
would be cleared.

Even though I would have to create the regular form and create all of the
fields (with the same id's), it would be better than creating a set fields
active link (4 or 5 of them) and having 50 or 60 set Field to $Null$ for each
field and each active link.

I just wish there was a process that I could run, but that was just wishful
thinking...

Thanks so much for the tip

2010-05-03 Thread Chowdhury, Tauf
Kali,

The other thing to consider is if you are running these queries during
peak production hours on your transactional DB (where users are
submitting/modifying/querying data using Remedy AR web/user tool). We
are currently in process of creating a reporting DB which is using DB
level replication technologies to create a mirror DB. At that point,
Analytics would be reconfigured to query the mirrored instance and
taking the load off the production transactional DB.

restoring DB from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008

2010-05-03 Thread Louise Van Hine
Hi List,

Has anyone done a database refresh (restore) from a SQL 2005 instance under the
covers to a SQL 2008 DB?  BMC is saying that this is not supported, but we have
done this into our TEST and DEV systems and now have refreshed our DEV with
production which is still on SQL 2005, and are about to perform the ARS upgrade
to 7.5 and then ITSM from 7.0.3. to 7.6.

Has anyone done this in a production environment?  So far everything looks
okay, our CMDB relationship viewer is happy, our consoles are happy, we had a
bit of a glitch with initially connecting but that was because the
configuration had a connection setting wrong initially - that got corrected and
regression tests seem to be passing.

Not in production; we are still exploring different methods of getting our
7.1/7.0.03 system migrated to 7.5/7.6. I did not have any problems restoring
or attaching the ARSystem db from SQL Server 2005 to 2008, but in the one test
where I tried to return it to 2005 by exporting it, it tripled in size and
refused to shrink. My caution would be that while you can get from 2005 to
2008 without much trouble, don't expect to be able to go back to 2005.

You can Upgrade to 7.5.1 with CSS

2010-05-03 Thread David Charters
All,

I have had several customers tell me over the last year that CSS 5.6 running
on ARS 6.3 or 7.1 will not upgrade to 7.5.1. I had a little free time so I
tested this. I installed ARS 6.3 and CSS 5.6. I then Upgraded to ARS 7.1
Patch 8. Tested, it worked fine. I then upgraded to 7.5.1, tested it worked
fine. There were a few tweaks required nothing major however CSS tested out
just fine for me running on 7.5.1 Patch 4. The only test that did fail was
starting with a 7.5.1 Server and trying to install CSS fresh on that, the
CSS installer does not seem to like 7.5.1. My configuration was as follows:

OS: Windows 2003 Standard Server

Database: MSSQL 2005

ARS 6.3 to ARS 7.1 to ARS 7.5.1 Patch 4

Java 1.6 version 20

Web Tomcat/ISS 6

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Also just in case
you're running the Very Old CRM 4.x (If you are call me let's talk Upgrade)
I do not think this will upgrade even to 7.1 due to the external binaries.

If you decide to copy all the fields to a normal form and you copy the Display

If you choose to stay with the display only form, you could add the old reset

Sadly, it's not just a case of knocking together some code and implementing
SSO, because invariably you'll end up with a solution that you wouldn't want to
roll out into production - there are a whole range of SSO bugs in the AR System
that need addressing, and you'll only find them as users start calling you.

That's why JSS built a solution and, three years after we started, are still
developing it while also assisting many of the largest BMC VARs and clients.
Of course, anyone could say that, so have a look at what our customers are
saying:

http://www.javasystemsolutions.com/jss/quotes

Also, did I mention that we've secured BMC RKM with SSO? I should point out
that there isn't an SSO interface to RKM, so you won't find a KB entry on it.
You can see it in action in this movie:

http://www.javasystemsolutions.com/movies/SSOPlugin-WhatsNewInVersion3

Read all about it on page 28 of this magazine:

http://www.javasystemsolutions.com/documentation/maternamonitor.pdf

You can evaluate the solution for free, today.

Re: Adding Menus to AST forms

2010-05-03 Thread P Romain ARSlist
These fields are attributes in the CMDB.

I'd suggest adding $NULL$ menus to the fields via the class manager or CMDB
driver then use active link(s) on the AST form(s) to add the menu(s) you
need.

If you later change your mind about the menus, or change the menu names,
then you then only need to modify workflow, not CMDB attributes.

BTW, I found during an upgrade from CMDB 2.1 to 7.6 that $NULL$ menus I'd
added to these attributes were removed so be prepared to re-apply this
change if you ever version-up.

Cheers

I believe there could be some configuration issue on our solaris server as on

Re: restoring DB from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008

2010-05-03 Thread Joe DeSouza
Louise,

Change the compatibility mode to 2005.

Check out the help on stored proceedure sp_dbcmptlevel.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms178653.aspx

You will need to create the database on 2008 manually and using the above
stored proceedure, bring the compatibility level to 90 which represents MS-SQL
2005. Then restore the 2005 database.

Hope this helps..

Cheers..

Many thanks for any and all comments,

Java equivalent to ExportData Dot-Net function?

2010-05-03 Thread Robert Molenda
Hopefully this is not a obvious question - but I've searched and searched...

A while ago I wrote a utility on the Dot-Net API wrapper that utilized
the ExportData function to export data from tables.

I'd like to use this again - however this customer is not a Windows
shop - so I thought - I have the framework - it'll be easy to port to
Java...

However I can't find any similar functionality within the java api.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

SSO with the mid-tier is a two part implementation. One part in the
mid-tier and the other part in an AREA plug-in.

Turn on the plug-in logs (if you have any type of AREA plug-in enabled) and
user logs (to see the authentication success/failure) and see what is
happening on the other end of the line.
