Re: midtier itsm screen load times average time

2011-06-21 Thread Nikolay Fedoseyenko
We are still on ARS 7.5 patch7, ITSM 7.6.0 p1 with best practice views and web
only users.
The Incident Management Console takes 2 seconds or less to load and about 2
seconds to open individual ticket. I noticed that the IM Console takes twice
longer to load in Remedy User .
Have you go through Performance Tuning for BSM to tweak MT?

We're on 7.6.04 and seeing similar times but we are on Classic View so it you
can add a second for the redirect. The consoles really depend on how many
requests are in the queue upon loading and what the default filter settings
are.
Ours are set to not show closed requests and then it's really up to the user.

We are on ITSM 7.6.03.
We are seeing  on the web New Incident, Search Incident, New Change,
Search Change screens on average are taking 4 sec, this is after a
complete midtier caching and user browser caching ( user already
opened the screens few times before we take the time measurement).
Incident Console, Change Consoles are taking 8 sec to load.
Can others using ITSM 7/7.6.03/7.6.04 provide average times that they
are seeing in their system.
So that I can see if  our performance is too slow or this is what
others also seeing.
I went through the BMC benchmark manual, but  I am more interested to
here from real users.

Migrator 7.6.04 SP1

2011-06-21 Thread Atul Vohra
All:

We have installed ARS and other packages 7.6.04 SP1 on Solaris/Oracle
environment. We have an overlay form from pre SP1 and wanted to use the
migrator to see the difference between SP1 form and our overlay version.

From what I see migrator does not look at overlays. I tried exporting the def
file of the overlay form and convert it in to migrator file but it did not
identify the form. Not sure if I am missing something or we can not use
migrator to compare the overlay version.

Any help or suggestion would be appreciated.

Marcelo,
To do it in your version of Remedy, you must turn on your user.log file and
parse apart the log to find that information. If you upgrade to 7.5, they
have built in logging for 'write' licenses that you can turn onbut not
read only...you still need to use logs to track read licenses

Problem with Status History in .NET API

2011-06-21 Thread André Delcroix

Hi list,

Working in C#, I am trying to merge a record, including the status
history in the list of updated fields.

I create a FieldValueList:
BMC.ARSystem.FieldValueList fieldValueList = new
BMC.ARSystem.FieldValueList();

At one point, I execute the following statements:
BMC.ARSystem.FieldValueList entry =
_server.GetEntry(currentSchemaName, entryId);
BMC.ARSystem.StatusHistory sh =
(BMC.ARSystem.StatusHistory)entry[15];

fieldValueList.Add(15, sh);

I Check that sh is a Status History object containing the expected values.
After the Add statement, I check the value of fieldValueList[15]. It is
set to System.DBNull !!

Does anyone know the reason why I cannot set the Status History when
trying to do a merge operation ?

Thanks

Re: track user usage

2011-06-21 Thread Misi Mladoniczky
Hi,

This info is stored in the user-log, just turn it on.

In recent versions of Remedy, version 7.5 I think, you can redirect the
log data to a form instead.

You can also turn on session tracking in recent version, where one record
per user-session per application is created, but that has not proven to be
as dependable as the good old user-log.

You can also use the award-winning RRR|License to help with this. You can
drill down on individual users and get a nice report of when they
login/logout: http://rrr.se/tmp/rrrLicSession.html

The above sample shows a user that has FIXED licenses for AR System and
Incident, and a FLOAT license for Asset. Four log files has been combined,
as this was a server group with four servers.

Best Regards - Misi, RRR AB, http://www.rrr.se

Products from RRR Scandinavia (Best R.O.I. Award at WWRUG10):
* RRR|License - Not enough Remedy licenses? Save money by optimizing.
* RRR|Log - Performance issues or elusive bugs? Analyze your Remedy logs.
Find these products, and many free tools and utilities, at http://rrr.se.

I am in need to track when 2 particular users login to Remedy. I want to
at least be able to log date and time when login occurs (log out info
would be cool too). Is this possible in my version of ARS??

Getting error: BMCATRIUM_NGIE000204: Error getting data stores

2011-06-21 Thread Jason Miller
We are trying to manage our AI data stores via the Atrium Core Console -

we receive the following error: *BMCATRIUM_NGIE000204: Error getting data

Screen print:

It worked fine for a few days after the 7.6.04 upgrade. Using the AI User'
Guide I found that the Carte process was not running on the AR/AI server.
Using the instructions I started it from the command line and verified the
kettle web interface is accessible but the Atrium console still throws the
error.

ARERR 551 to the best of my knowledge is the native database server not
available – meaning the SQL database that the AR System database resides on..
Something is killing your local database server or its client connection. It
may possibly be even a network issue between the AR Server and the Database
server..

Why do you suspect it has anything to do with the AIE which may be running a
job on some foreign database?

Re: Problem with Status History in .NET API

2011-06-21 Thread Papolu, Appajee
Because you uncovered a defect or missing functionality in this API :-)

Seriously, indeed, you have found a defect. Currently .NET API is not handling
assigning a status history value *unless* supplied as a string (i.e. an encoded
format string value). However unfortunately the utility method (within
StatusHistory class in this API) for encoding the status history is marked
internal, so I am attaching a simple implementation of this method for your
convenience:

   /// summary
/// Encode the status history content to string representation as per AR
System data file encoding scheme
   /// /summary

  System.DateTime unixEpoch = new System.DateTime(1970, 1, 1, 0, 0, 0);
  foreach (StatusHistoryItem item in sh)

encoded += span.TotalSeconds;
encoded += (char)4;

Now, paste this method in your class convert your status history value

See how it behaves now

Subject: Problem with Status History in .NET API

Hi list,

Working in C#, I am trying to merge a record, including the status
history in the list of updated fields.
I create a FieldValueList:
 BMC.ARSystem.FieldValueList fieldValueList = new
BMC.ARSystem.FieldValueList();

At one point, I execute the following statements:
 BMC.ARSystem.FieldValueList entry =
_server.GetEntry(currentSchemaName, entryId);
 BMC.ARSystem.StatusHistory sh =
(BMC.ARSystem.StatusHistory)entry[15];
 fieldValueList.Add(15, sh);

I Check that sh is a Status History object containing the expected values.
After the Add statement, I check the value of fieldValueList[15]. It is
set to System.DBNull !!

Does anyone know the reason why I cannot set the Status History when
trying to do a merge operation ?

Thanks

André

Re: Migrator 7.6.04 SP1

2011-06-21 Thread Atul Vohra
All:

We have installed ARS and other packages 7.6.04 SP1 on Solaris/Oracle
environment. We have an overlay form from pre SP1 and wanted to use the
migrator to see the difference between SP1 form and our overlay version.

From what I see migrator does not look at overlays. I tried exporting the def
file of the overlay form and convert it in to migrator file but it did not
identify the form. Not sure if I am missing something or we can not use
migrator to compare the overlay version.

--
Issue 2:
Server 1(7.6.04 SP1) - Form: X
Server 2 (7.6.04) - Form X with overlay

I am not able to migrate or import form X from Server 1 to Server 2 - keeps
complaining that object is reserved by other users. I have checked and they are
NOT reserved.

Any help or suggestion would be appreciated.

This is definitely referenced in the Migrator manual, as well as, I believe, in

While field ID's are one way to recognize who done what, its my opinion that
the best use of ranges is to identify what application or module or type of
data a field might belong to.. For eg 750xx1xxx to 750xx2 would be
fields pertaining to lets say Sales Order application...

A better way to manage who done what is to have their signatures in the
Change History. This way (assuming that they do leverage the use of change
history) you can keep track of changes done and by who for e.g. if a field
was created by Joe as a Optional field last year but this year Joe made it
Required on January and then Freddy changed its field label to XYZ on Feb..

If they want accountability they would have to accept some discipline and
leverage the use of something like Change History which I think is best
suited for tracking purposes right from the inception of an object to its
extinction..

Re: New Product Catalog Data Import - Disappointed!

2011-06-21 Thread Rahul Vedak
Some of your observations about Product Catalog data are true. When we
analyzed the issue retrospectively, QA spent most energy to verify the
update gets installed successfully in customer environments and there was
less focus on verifying the quality of the content. Effective measures are
now in place to ensure ‘quality of data’ being shipped.

Based on the feedback we received from the field, BMC has now withdrawn the
data update and is in process of making corrections to it. Availability of
corrected data would be announced separately.

I have added comments below to give more clarity on the data update.

• Data has the first character as upper case and the rest as lower.
This means that we see companies like Bmc, Ibm, Hp, etc. The product name
data is also the same. For reports this won't look good.
Agree. We are in process of correcting it.

• Then there are exceptions and possible duplicates such as the
inclusion of both 'Network associates' and 'Networks Associates' (note the
capital 'A').
Agree. This should have been captured as alias.

• Although open to debate the customer here thinks the normalisation
aliases are the wrong way around for companies like BMC (BMC Software
converts to BMC), HP (Hewlett-Packard converts to Hp), etc.
As rightly pointed out, this could be debatable – what is
manufacturer name and what should be alias for manufacturer. As a thumb
rule, we will refer manufacturer name with commonly used name like HP for
Hewlett-Packard. But again, BMC could have been better captured as ‘BMC
Software’.

• The Tier 1-3 values are all the same. A suggestion of possible
values would have been good.
This is under way. We have taken ITSM best practices to add
categorization to each product. v2 and onwards, all the data updates will
have this information for all the products.

• The data only includes Product class data. The opportunity to
include other classes has been missed (but I hope will come later).
For the short/medium term (next 12-24 months), we will focus on Software
titles only. We don’t plan to add any Hardware/Networking product details in
data updates any soon.
In addition, we are also trying to simplify the install process for
this PC data updates. Currently it involves lot of manual steps.

Weird issue with ARS 7.5

2011-06-21 Thread Pierson, Shawn
Good afternoon,

Our disaster recovery location recently changed, and as a result our backup
servers were all moved. As I tested ARS to see if it is working correctly
after the move, AR System would not start correctly. In the arerror.log
everything looked fine, it gave the normal startup message, but then suddenly
died with no error message appearing there.

However, when I look in Event Viewer I see the message, AR System Server
unable to create (390600, 0) for TCP. I've tried comparing everything I can to
the production box this mirrors and it seems all correct, nothing has changed
as far as I can tell software-wise. I looked for hard drive problems, and I
compared the database to my production database and the settings are identical.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. I am on ARS 7.5

Shawn,

Start the server in a startup debug mode. That way you would be able to see
more finer logs a startup log file that will be created in the server
directory..

To do this you need to add the flag –d to the AR Server startup line in the
armonitor.cfg file.

Hopefully you’ll have more on there..

Question on Web Inf Change

2011-06-21 Thread pritch
Using the web client, my folks are approving (or rejecting) requests. The
approval is recorded and processed by the approval server. The users do
not think the approval went through since it doesn't update the status on
their screen.

I do have them refreshing their screen to see the status update has been
processed or the next approver in line has been generated. Here's my
question:

Is there a way to send an event from the server to the client and have the
screen refresh once the approval is processed? About the only way I've
thought of is to open a window saying something to the effect of 'approval
being processed, please wait' and go into a loop checking to see that the
approval is processed and then refresh the screen via an event from the
open window to the previous one.

Am I missing the obvious? Has anyone come up with a way to get the screen
on the web client to refresh after an approval takes place?

thank you

Re: Weird issue with ARS 7.5

2011-06-21 Thread I.D.Trimnell
Shawn,

This sounds like the same problem I had last week. Working with our VAR
(Fusion) we traced it down to a change in the Legato Networker program which
had nicked the portmapper threads. Check with netstat (or something similar) to
see if anything has grabbed port 111. Also check to see if the AR System
portmap service is running.

I can't remember all the details and it is after hours here. If the ARS
portmapper service isn't running they you may have to re-install (we went from
patch 3 to 7).

Hope this helps,

Getting error: BMCATRIUM_NGIE000204: Error getting data stores

2011-06-21 Thread Jason Miller
We are trying to manage our AI data stores via the Atrium Core Console -
Integrator (7.6.04 SP1). When we click on the Manage Data Stores button
we receive the following error: *BMCATRIUM_NGIE000204: Error getting data
stores.

Screen print:
https://communities.bmc.com/communities/servlet/JiveServlet/showImage/2-191885-18198/AI_DatastoreError.png

It worked fine for a few days after the 7.6.04 upgrade. Using the AI User'
Guide I found that the Carte process was not running on the AR/AI server.
Using the instructions I started it from the command line and verified the
kettle web interface is accessible but the Atrium console still throws the
error.

Does anybody know what might be going wrong here?

Re: changing the next Field ID -- team wants to know

2011-06-21 Thread Mahesh
You will still need to plug in the field-id manually while creating the
field.

 1. Create Two forms

a. Form to configure the field ranges

b. Form to generate the ID sequentially (you will need to write
workflow for this).

2. Export the above to a def file.

3. Import the def file to the developer's VM.

4. Configure the starting range of field-id accordingly in the form
created in step 1(a).

Thanks

Pritch,
To handle that scenario we have a Field ID generator form on one of our
boxes that every developer uses when creating fields, it gives them the
'next' in a line, this prevents us from having that 'merge' issue that you

For us it's not a matter of knowing 'who did what'. Since they are VM
images, everyone is working on separate copies which then get's merged via
passing of def files. If we don't use range of field ID's, we end up with
all sorts of conflicts when we merge the forms / workflow.

Re: Tomcat 6 MidTier 7.6.4

2011-06-21 Thread Matt Reinfeldt
Christie,

It is fairly common for the CPU and Memory usage to increase right after
restarting tomcat as it loads all the forms and workflow definitions into
cache. Depending on what you have installed, this should even out after a
short time (varies, so I can't give you an estimate as to actual length).

If it doesn't settle down, check the tomcat logs to see what it is busy with
and take it from there.

Good luck,

Matt

2011-06-21 Thread Joe Martin D'Souza

My personal preference still is using field ID range for type of data.. it
helps with many things including shared workflow, matching IDs functionality,
etc..

Another way to do it and yet work with reserving ID ranges for different types
of data, with no workflow required, is create a form and create all the fields
needed in that form like a central container of all fields

That way the only manual step would be choosing the field ID, and once its
chosen and created, there is no chance of duplication.. Copy that field to
whatever application form that you want to copy it to and it would carry
forward with most of its properties with the exception of the x. y location
which you really do not care about...

You would only need to change the Required, Optional attribute wherever needed
and permissions

I remember actually some developers using this approach at one of the sites I
worked at, do not remember where..

For us it's not a matter of knowing 'who did what'. Since they are VM
images, everyone is working on separate copies which then get's merged via
passing of def files. If we don't use range of field ID's, we end up with
all sorts of conflicts when we merge the forms / workflow.

2011-06-21 Thread gok's
Hi All,

which is on the same database server we are using 7.5 ARSystem. In this
scenario if the user who is querying by Change ID how can I set that ID

I use that pattern for Table fields because you can have the main table field
and then its columns appear together on the lists when sorted with field ID’s
so its easier to spot them on that list..

Other than table fields I like to arrange the lists by type of data (not data
type) such as asset data, people data, etc

My personal preference still is using field ID range for type of data.. it
helps with many things including shared workflow, matching IDs functionality,
etc..

Another way to do it and yet work with reserving ID ranges for different
types of data, with no workflow required, is create a form and create all the
fields needed in that form like a central container of all fields

That way the only manual step would be choosing the field ID, and once its
chosen and created, there is no chance of duplication.. Copy that field to
whatever application form that you want to copy it to and it would carry
forward with most of its properties with the exception of the x. y location
which you really do not care about...

You would only need to change the Required, Optional attribute wherever
needed and permissions

I remember actually some developers using this approach at one of the sites I
worked at, do not remember where..

You will still need to plug in the field-id manually while creating the field.

   1. Create Two forms

  a. Form to configure the field ranges

  b. Form to generate the ID sequentially (you will need to write workflow
for this).

  2. Export the above to a def file.

  3. Import the def file to the developer's VM.

  4. Configure the starting range of field-id accordingly in the form
created in step 1(a).

  Thanks

  Pritch,
To handle that scenario we have a Field ID generator form on one of our boxes
that every developer uses when creating fields, it gives them the 'next' in a
line, this prevents us from having that 'merge' issue that you described.

Hi Jason,

Did you start the Carte process on the server where you installed the Atrium
Integrator Server component? It does not start automatically; you have to
start it manually using the port you use during the installation which is 2
by default.

1 - Open DOS cd to directory where the Carte.bat file resides
2 - run the following carte servername 2

Hope this helps.

Hi Francois,

Thanks for the input. Yes we started it from the command line. We verified
that it was up an running by accessing the web interface (
http://localhost:2).

So by design the Carte process does not start at server start up? This
doesn't seem right:

1) seems like a really poor design choice
2) because the documentation doesn't state it has to manually be started,
only to start as a troubleshooting step it if it is not currently running
[but documentation bugs happen]
3) we were able to access the Data Stores initially without having to start
the process manually.

The Data Stores are still accessible through the AI console on our test
server, only production has this issue.

Any other ideas? Since it is production we haven't had a chance to reboot
the server. I wonder if things will magically work again after a reboot?
(it is Windows after all)

What about the mid-tier cache (flush), I sometimes manually clear the mid-tier
cache from the mid-tiercache directory as I saw some arslist techies stated
