If this was feedback on the JSS SSO Plugin, I'd be embarrassed. It
sounds like BMC need to spend one year doing nothing but improving
stability. Like fixing the dozens if Javascript errors that will never
go away through flushing caches etc.

Re: Reconciliation Jobs and AST:Attributes Form

2014-02-05 Thread Patrick Swint
I’ve created jobs to migrate data directly to the corresponding AST:X
forms, as well. The workflow in those forms also creates a ReconID in the
SANDBOX record which causes the merge function to create duplicate records in
ASSET unless we clear them out before hand.

All that our staging form is doing is checking the model information via our
Product Catalog and then moving the data to the appropriate AST form based on
CIType. This way we don’t have to break data feeds down by class.

The only thing I can think of to get around this is to duplicate the attribute
fields on the BaseElement form so the data will show up regardless of whether
we clear out the ReconID. Anyone see any issues with doing that?

data through the CMDB or AST join forms since the workflow is already there to
push the data to the proper regular form Base Element and Computer Sys tem as
an example and set the Instance ID to be the same on both of the entries. with
8.0 a non CMDB form was added AST:Attributes that is only used when the Asset
Join is used for import.

Subject: Reconciliation Jobs and AST:Attributes Form
**
We are running into a catch-22 style situation with some of our reconciliation
jobs for a 8.1 migration.

The data that we have in our existing environment is made up of hardware info
in a BMC class (e.g. BMC_ComputerSystem) and financial information in the
AST:Attributes class. We have a Pentaho job that moves data to a staging form
where workflow kicks off and moves the data to the appropriate forms and links
the forms together using the InstanceID and ReconciliationID.

The problem occurs when we attempt to reconcile this data from our SANDBOX
dataset to our ASSET dataset. If we run a standard identify and merge job, the
merge creates duplicate entries in ASSET…I’m assuming this is because our
workflow creates a ReconciliationID as part of the form linkage so the
identification fails against existing data from ADDM in the ASSET dataset due
to the different ReconciliationIDs. I can zero out the ReconciliationIDs for
the record in BMC_BaseElement and AST:Attributes and the reconciliation job
then identifies and merges successfully…but any data from AST:Attributes.

I’ve tried using custom identification rule sets for each class in our SANDBOX
and run into the same issue as with the standard job. I also lose Attribute
info if I leave the ReconID in AST:Attribute alone and only zero out the one in
BMC_BaseElement.

Questions:

a) Is there an easier way to import data that shows up in a join form, e.g.
AST:ComputerSystem? Keep in mind that we’ll need to do this for several
different asset classes.
b) If not, are their recommendations for changes to the data import workflow or
in the reconciliation job? Is there a different way to link data on these
forms?? How are the rest of the folks on here managing this process?

In our case, we are encountering this regularly on IE 8, ever since our upgrade
to 7.6.04. We also experience this in IE 9 and 10, but the majority of our
users are on IE 8. The only solution we've found is to flush the mid-tier cache
and have the user then clear their own cache and hit Ctrl + F5 on returning to
the Remedy home page.

We've also installed the hotfix provided by BMC, to no avail. We were hoping an
upgrade to 8.1 in the near future would be helpful, but it appears that may not
be the case. :(

I didn’t want to hijack this email thread for my own issues but hopefully
Suresh can get some benefit from what I’ve run into as well.

We have been on ARS 8.1 for a couple of months but just upgraded ITSM to
8.1 (including the two patches) as of this past weekend. In testing we
ran into the Caught Exception errors that Suresh ran into, but the ITSM
patches seemed to have addressed most of those. The problem now is
basically instability. Tomcat itself keeps crashing, so I upgraded it
from patch 32 to patch 37 tonight to see if that helps.

There have also been a never-ending stream of Mid Tier issues, but of very
low intensity, from 7.6.4 on with Internet Explorer. My understanding is
that Internet Explorer has defects in it that cause it to not correctly
refresh cache, and the way the Mid Tier is designed that becomes a big
issue. However, we also have run into issues with 7.6.4 that are worse on
8.1 with specific user’s cache on the Mid Tier becoming corrupt somehow
and generating errors. The only way to resolve those is to flush the
cache on the Mid Tier, but doing so messes up a small but vocal percentage
of other people who have to clear their IE browser cache.

So based on the suggestion below, I am planning on looking into the Mid
Tier hotfix. I’ll open a ticket with BMC tomorrow if my system is still
unstable after the Tomcat upgrade and try to get that hotfix but I have an
I.T. form of PTSD because our implementation of 7.6.4 a couple years ago
was delayed a few months due to BMC support not being helpful with Mid
Tier issues (which resulted in a custom Mid Tier patch for us, which so
far hadn’t been necessary on 8.1.)

So with all that said, I tried to guess the 8.1 path on the FTP site below
but couldn’t find one that worked. I also tried searching their Knowledge
Base because I often find hotfixes in there, including several that have
gone in with my 8.1 install.

I didn't want to hijack this email thread for my own issues but hopefully
Suresh can get some benefit from what I've run into as well.

We have been on ARS 8.1 for a couple of months but just upgraded ITSM to
8.1 (including the two patches) as of this past weekend. In testing we ran
into the Caught Exception errors that Suresh ran into, but the ITSM patches
seemed to have addressed most of those. The problem now is basically
instability. Tomcat itself keeps crashing, so I upgraded it from patch 32
to patch 37 tonight to see if that helps.

There have also been a never-ending stream of Mid Tier issues, but of very
low intensity, from 7.6.4 on with Internet Explorer. My understanding is
that Internet Explorer has defects in it that cause it to not correctly
refresh cache, and the way the Mid Tier is designed that becomes a big
issue. However, we also have run into issues with 7.6.4 that are worse on
8.1 with specific user's cache on the Mid Tier becoming corrupt somehow and
generating errors. The only way to resolve those is to flush the cache on
the Mid Tier, but doing so messes up a small but vocal percentage of other
people who have to clear their IE browser cache.

So based on the suggestion below, I am planning on looking into the Mid
Tier hotfix. I'll open a ticket with BMC tomorrow if my system is still
unstable after the Tomcat upgrade and try to get that hotfix but I have an
I.T. form of PTSD because our implementation of 7.6.4 a couple years ago
was delayed a few months due to BMC support not being helpful with Mid Tier
issues (which resulted in a custom Mid Tier patch for us, which so far
 hadn't been necessary on 8.1.)

So with all that said, I tried to guess the 8.1 path on the FTP site below
but couldn't find one that worked. I also tried searching their Knowledge
Base because I often find hotfixes in there, including several that have
gone in with my 8.1 install.

 Thanks,

Interestingly, BMC makes it next to impossible to actually get hotfixes
without waiting on their support. Do you know any alternate means of
getting the Mid Tier Hotfix you mentioned that doesn't require a U.N.
Resolution worth of log files and config files in the right format?

 Suresh,

What is the patch version of ARS , Midtier and Tomcat

Apply Patch 02 for ARS, Mid tier Hotfix (Dec072013 ) and Patch 36 for
Tomcat 6.0 and see if it helps

We had few issues with ARS 8.1 un-patched version.

 Thanks

Re: Caught Exception issue...

2014-02-05 Thread Susan Palmer
We did Mid-Tier last October for the first time. (8.1) The mantra of
Flush, Flush, Flush was a daily thing since we do a lot of enhancements.
Then we realized we could change the settings in the browser to do it when
they close their browsers.

IE 9-10 are the only ones we support, 11 is not useable at all. Firefox is
what I find to be most dependable.

But with all that flushing going on, we still get the Caught Exception
errors of various types. I have found we need to do what we call a 'Super
Flush' about every 3 weeks, in fact we are establishing a regularly
scheduled maintenance. It's the full flush of the actual mid-tier servers,
not just the user browsers. The 'Super Flush' clears the issues away.

I find it amazing that these errors can affect only a few of our 200 users,
not everyone, so something more is going on. These errors can also affect
Report Console reports. Sometimes you can access the Change form but not
the Case form. It has so many faces you cannot simply compile a list.

But when it comes right down to it, 15 min of downtime to 'Super Flush'
both our mid-tiers is an easy fix. We're in the process of setting up a
cron job to do it weekly on Friday nights.

I also found that after we run it, the arplugin stops working so you have
to kill it so it starts again.

There were some known cache corruption issues that were discussed at
WWRUG13. The newer hotfixes (7.6.04, 8.0, 8.1) I believe attempt to
address these. We recently applied the Dec 8.1 hotfix and I have not heard
any reports of these types of errors. Admittedly these were not originally
reported to my team until many had suffered much pain so it is hard to tell
if hotfixes actually did the trick.

Caught Exception issue...

2014-02-05 Thread John Baker
I recently diagnosed the most basic of design failures in Mid Tier 8.1.
ehcache, the open source caching tool used to underpin the cache
'framework' uses Java serialisation. If you change the JRE version, it
can't unserialise the cache. Instead of dealing with this neatly, Mid
Tier threw NullPointerExceptions.

The only solution was to nuke the cache directory - fine, that's a
reasonable solution, but it's a basic programming error that should have
been neatly handled.
