We had SEVERE performance issues trying to operate Oracle case
insensitive. In fact, we postponed a database conversion from Sybase
because of this.

I read somewhere that if you turn off case sensitity in Oracle, you
could have perform issues due to some kind of an index thing. Has
anyone else experienced this? We are in the process of migrating to 10g
and have considered turning this off, but if it's going to cost
performance, we may need to rethink this.

Can anyone confirm is this is how the system behaved prior to the DST

I suspect what you're looking for is a list we've had to fix ourselves.
Its rather huge and intermixed with customizations that were required to
accommodate our business rules. I'm still in firefighting mode so that
list will have to wait. I'd be happy to answer specific questions if I
can. Also its important to note that we converted from ITSP to ITSM so
the upgrade path is vastly different.

As far as I know there are no enterprise-wide ITSM implementations yet.
Many companies, including ours are in the middle of the implementation.

The same seems to be true for any 'best practices', especially for

Even BMC is very vague and sometimes provides conflicting guidance.

This won't be much help to you (except from an informational sharing
perspective) but we ran into similar performance issues as part of a

Subject: Oracle case insensitivity features and ARS 7

Hi list,

we are currently migrating a ARS application from Sybase to Oracle
10gR2. A big problem is that Oracle by default is case sensitive and
users are used to execute searches without caring about the case.

We applied KM-00012018 without great success.

We also played around with the following Oracle options:
ALTER SESSION SET NLS_COMP=LINGUISTIC;
ALTER SESSION SET NLS_SORT=BINARY_CI;
and function based indexes to get Oracle to work case insensitive. The
problem is that the indexes created by ARS won't work and performance
would be very poor.

Does anybody have a performant real live environment with ARS using
Oracle case insensitivity options and would like to share the details?

Remedy support says this is a limitation from Oracle.

Oracle support states that everything works great if you use
nlssort-funcion in the where clause of your SQL statement. Unfortunately
ARS doesn't issue SQL commands of that style.

ARS 7.0.0
Oracle 10gR2
Solaris 10

Kind regards,
Albert

Version 6.03, patch 16. Happens on csv and arx imports. Found the
index violations in the sql logs. One looks like a T Table - T890, one
was a very interstingly named object - B157C35041. Gonna work with
my engineers to see what's going on.

Here are the SQL errors if anyone cares :)

*/*** ERROR *** Attempt to insert duplicate key row in object 'T890'

*/*** ERROR *** Attempt to insert duplicate key row in object

BTW, it appears tha the second object is the blob for the one attachment
on the change form.

I'm trying to import data into an existing change record, mapping the
change id and the data field. I'm basically attempting a data transfer
from one field to another. Export Change ID and current data, import
change ID and data to new field. I have my duplicate preferences set to
"Update Old Record with New Records Data." I STILL get a unique index
error (ARERR 382). There are no user defined unique indexes on our
Change form. My filter logs don't show a push to another form. Could
this be coming from the Change ID (1) despite my duplicate preferences?

TIA,
