Hello ARSLIST!

Please post to this thread if you are at the BMC Engage 2014 conference and
would like to share your observations with the lust readers damn it Siri
that's list readers (well most of them) who are not able to attend.

Props, kudos, booboos, oops, wild rants and applause are all appropriate
here, as well as your descriptions of the conference and the Disney World
experience just a short boat it bus from here.

Also note there are lots of other social media connections to the BMC
streams available. Facebook, Twitter, Linked-In, the conference web pages
and the BMC Engage app for smartphones all have ways to get official
information and exchange messages.

Re: ENGAGE 2014 Commentary

2014-10-13 Thread Doug Blair
Hi!

Spent the afternoon at Disney's Hollywood Studios, and yesterday at Epcot. I'm
about done with theme parks for a while.

The first observation I'd like to make is about scale. Everything in this space
is massive, and even though it looks like there are more than s thousand in the
Monday reception at the moment, there are tens of thousands in Disney World and
the surrounding non-conference-type hotels. All made to feel unique and
special. (insert Mickey Mouse icon in your choice of fonts here)

Scale also brings to my mind that BMC Engage is a larger conference than the
WWRUG meetings have been. I have met many of my friends (drinking buddies,
co-workers, party animals, former employers!) from past conferences in the
lobby, and I'm meeting a lot of new folks too. This is, I think, a Good Thing.
As the week progresses we'll see how all these groups interact.

The exhibit hall is huge too. Lots of vendors to talk to, lots of "swag" to
collect, and it will take several visits to see them all. I've always tried to
chat with every single one of the exhibitors, you never know what's going turn
out to be useful.

Speaking of which, the foods good too, so

Later

Joe,

Monday was sort of quiet if you don't count all the certification training and
classes, and if you don't count the huge reception in the technology showcase
and if you don't count all the anticipation about Engage

And it wasn't quiet for me. Went to the Hollywood Movie Studio park and rode
the Hollywood Hotel Tower of Terror for the first time, then went back after
the Engage reception and rode it twice more in the dark! Yeha!

All that adrenaline should put me in the right mood for Tuesday's keynote.

Breakfast!

Two things to know. First breakfast for most of us is about 4 miles from the
entrance to the conference. Well, not really. But go left past the registration
area, then halfway down the corridor to the right, then down the stairs and
turn left, and keep walk past the well-meaning staff for about an hour. Well,
not really.

And if you are part of the Executive Summit group Well you've finished
breakfast already :-)

And the last non-BMC thing for the moment us discount Disney tickets. There are
deals for convention attendees which are available on-line, and not through the
disney ticket office in the Dolphin lobby. You can get them if you call (407)
566-5600 and mention the BMC conference. Details:

Re: ENGAGE 2014 Commentary

2014-10-14 Thread Blairing
From the opening Keynote. Just my notes, no editing allowed! From the Keynote
opening BMC Engage 2014

Introduction film by Steven Hawking,

Opening remarks by Paul Appleby, BMC exec VP Worldwide sales and marketing,
referencing Hawking and Steve Jobs, and introducing "a whole new BMC."

Bob Beauchamp, BMC CEO and chairman, welcoming customers, employees, press. His
Topics to be: Wild and crazy stuff happening in the IT support industry:
digitalization era. And what BNC has been doing to address digitalization
behind the scenes.

Next Year's Engage will be at the Aria in Las Vegas
New BMC logo - "double helix" connotes digital DNA
New BMC, private ownership, increased funding, new internal organization,
new customer facing innovations, increased R&D and marketing vs plans in public
company era
3rd era... It craftsmanship, 2nd IT industrialization, 3rd IT
digitalization. A disruptive era encompassing social, mobile, big data, cloud.
Era of digitalization will transform nay industries beyond IT, much as
downloads and itunes disrupted media and entertainment
List of disruptive technologies Mobile internet, robotics, 3d painting,
Internet if things, energy storage, renewable energy etc. some commentary on
Disney fast-pass and technology used to enhance the guest experience in the
parks. 3d printers in space can manufacture things in space (at international
space station now)
Autonomous vehicles. Insurance acne premiums down 90% ? Impact of
autonomous vehicles leads to using transportations as a service rather than
owning a personal car. Amazon, Google, may automotive companies working on this
technology.
Internet of things - 7.3 billion SIM cards, 7.2 billion humans. 50 billion
devices on Internet by 2020. All generating enormous amounts of data. Only 1
percent of this is being analyzed. The old ways of managing this many devices
will NOT scale to this number of Devices. Trouble tickets won't do it.
Two speeds of IT: Big machines with centralized processing will be
enormous. Cost of compute reduces by 33%/year, network speed down 28/year. IT
operations cost, however, not declining. Second speed is IT operations speed.
Intertia of the organization itself limits the speed at which new concepts can
be explored and deployed. IT may be overwhelmed by volume of data and
processing which is necessitated by Internet of things. IT management of
processes must happen and cannot be accomplished by traditional organizational
structures. Must have an integrated strategy to adjust for both volume of
data/processing strength and organization of processes and procedures to handle
the evolution.
Industrial IT and Innovation IT
Bring IT to Life
   Intuitive solutions
   High speed innovation
   Industrialized solutions

MyIT now has > 1 million users
SmartIT - new interface for IT staff service management users
TrueSight - new methods of analysis for performance and availability issues
SmartFlows - process management for service restoration including self service
and knowledge management

Welcome to a New era in IT, to a new BMC, and to Engage

More to come Next:

Paul Appleby talk about Transforming The Digital Enterprise

Our lives are changing, Paul travels a lot, subscribes to technologies like
Skype which allow him to leverage available services to help him live the life
he wishes. Challenge with this how are these compelling and transformational
services delivered?

Most companies are living in the eras of data processing, process automation
and the cloud/Social/'Mobile/Connected world, all at the same time. Example in
a telecommunications provided: Customer billing data is on mainframes at at
data center, but end user provisioning is cloud and scattered and somewhat
chaotic.b

Video demonstrates share, touch, work and discover. Introducing "Living IT
from BMC," I assume this is a commercial.

6 transformational imperatives for embracing IT as the enterprise,
digitalization

   Intuitive experience
Example most ohone apps, no instructions needed
   Actionable intelligence
   Apps deliver useful stats
   Agile applications
Delivery of innovation applications must be designed into the platforms,
allowing business agility
Adaptive automation
Not only from infrastructure perspective but also process evolution
 Optimized infrastructure

As BMC brings IT to live, BMC will be working with customers to understand the

2014-10-14 Thread arslist
As long as we are dealing with serious stuff, Thursday is declared official
Hawaii shirt day for those that brought them, since there is no WWRUG Award
session and that would normally be Thursday.

Just had a tremendous, if not quite organized, evening with engineering in
which I had my first serious question in years answered! They were still
going strong at almost 10pm.

Also, DISCLAIMER: Note, those twinkies have BMC logos on them, they are not
the Canadian Twinkies, I did not bring them, nor did I throw or condone the
throwing of them at a time that many were not prepared or expecting them. I
wholeheartedly support the concept, but a heads up first would have been a
good part of the process. Then those that didn't know what to expect could
of turned to those of us in the know and ask and we could have said: "just
duck"

Well okay, I did throw two, but that was to known people that knew to expect
them.

Twinkies appeared at the Evening with Engineering, rebranded Evening With The
Experts. This was split into three venues (adjacent rooms separated by folding
walls). One dealt with most products in the Remedy architecture, one with
Control-M and friends, and one with... Uh Something else that I somehow
didn't get around to visiting :-)

No one seems to know where the Twinkies came from, though some appeared to
descend from twhe very heavens at great speed. They are not the Canadian
variation, nor do they have Elvish qualities. They have the same timeless,
indestructible, permanent characteristics that we have come to expect from...
whatever the heck these things are

This evening's event was wonderfully successful. The promise was made that no
one leaves with unanswered questions, and things were still going strong when I
left after 10pm.

I should also mention that the 5:30 "pub crawl" was more like a stroll than a
crawl, and that the location was the technology showcase. Don't worry. Be hoppy.

You are hereby gently reminded that there's a video feed of the Next Big Thing
Wednesday at Noon EDT, 11AM CDT, 10AM MDT and 9 AM PDT. If you're not
registered, try this:

Yes, it WAS. Sat in the front row... With a box lunch... Just behind the
audience mic, and I didn't want to munch my salad for all of you to hear. :-)

Not sure how much of the pageantry in the room was sent live to the net, but I
can vouch that the demos on the iPad were indeed on the iPad on stage, and
another person typed the responses live. The idea of being able to do the bar
code read from your iPad (finally! Someone has done this!) ranks high in my
list. After the demos there was a panel taking live questions from the
audience, they're out in the hallway still talking to some.

I got a chance to be a beta tester for future versions of SmartIT (one of the
session rooms is a testing lab). Sorry, no details to post. But it was a very
cool experience to have some input into the design process.

The more I see of SmartIT, the more I am convinced that this is the logical
next phase of the client, with the potential to make the current web clients go
away. The framework is flexible, adaptable, taking advantage of the devices we
all carry around anyway, using their built in capabilities (maps for example)
as one would naturally expect. As of today there are three different "personas"
for which the SmartIT client has been designed, but there are more on the way.
An iPhone/Android phone app is also in the pipeline. Very excited about this

Being actually able to use iDevice is absolutely wonderful. Especially for an

2014-10-15 Thread Pierson, Shawn
I'm curious about your comment, " An iPhone/Android phone app is also in the
pipeline." I thought it was already out, just not on the app stores yet?

I know next to nothing about iOS (and don't like it, personally) but in looking
through the SmartIT zip files, which I haven't had a chance to install yet,
I've MyIT.apk and Smart_IT.apk. I may load them up in an android emulator and
see if they do anything if I have free time this week.

Thanks,

Re: ENGAGE 2014 Commentary

2014-10-15 Thread Doug Blair
Shawn,

I am pretty sure that this release of SmartIT is for the tablets and (of
course) web clients. I would be delighted to be wrong about this.

I'm still not sure which category my iPhone 6+ fits in. It barely fits in my
pocket :-)

Technology Showcase has just closed. There are only 1 or 2 sessions left, then
the great gathering of bus riders over to Universal for the JAM party tonight!

I had bandwith issues too while listening in while I was connected to the

disconnected the stream. Too much going on with work which is why I skipped

Not sure how much of the pageantry in the room was sent live to the
net, but I can vouch that the demos on the iPad were indeed on the iPad on
stage, and another person typed the responses live. The idea of being able
to do the bar code read from your iPad (finally! Someone has done this!)
ranks high in my list. After the demos there was a panel taking live
questions from the audience, they're out in the hallway still talking to
some.

I got a chance to be a beta tester for future versions of SmartIT
(one of the session rooms is a testing lab). Sorry, no details to post. But
it was a very cool experience to have some input into the design process.

The more I see of SmartIT, the more I am convinced that this is the
logical next phase of the client, with the potential to make the current web
clients go away. The framework is flexible, adaptable, taking advantage of
the devices we all carry around anyway, using their built in capabilities
(maps for example) as one would naturally expect. As of today there are
three different "personas" for which the SmartIT client has been designed,
but there are more on the way. An iPhone/Android phone app is also in the
pipeline. Very excited about this

Regading JAM Party, it was a hit. I talked to many people that were
enjoying themselves (me included and I have been on a grumpy streak
lately). I think the only downside is there was a time limit since we had
to catch a bus back to the hotel. At WWRUG there may or may not have been
times when I was still socializing at 3 am.

Today there are more breakout sessions, but there is also a closing keynote
session for everyone. We're watching slide show of all the exciting character
hugs from the party (Spider-Man, Captain America and numerous Marvel heroes
were there)! A few scary pix taken from the Hulk roller coaster. And listening
to Thunderstruck (reminds me of WWRUG12) at full concert volume The
auditorium is full - had expected more people to have departed after the party.

Re: ENGAGE 2014 Commentary

2014-10-16 Thread Blairing
Notes from the closing keynote, again my running notes, no editing.

Marketing VP Paul Appleby introduces futurist Tony Seba.
Tony will speak about Disruption

Tony addresses the fact the disruption happens quickly. The car replaced the
horse in New York (except for one in each of the picture) between 1900 and
1913. Cell phones accepted by 120 times more people than forecast by AT&T.
Kodak went from 14B$ to bankruptcy in 12 years.

Why do smart people in smart companies consistently fail to see the future? It
is usually the experts and the insiders who miss the effect of disruption.

Disruption from below

Disruptive products are initially less capable than the existing technology
They improve quality at a faster rates and displace the mainstream

Who would want a computer in their house? Print newspapers, digital
photography, cellular telephony as examples of disruption from below

Disruption from above

Superiors products and services which are more capable are far more expensive
at the start, these do not innovate or improve as rapidly, but they cut their
costs dramatically and thus disrupt the market. Best example is Tesla Motors.

Big Bang disruption

Google maps disrupted Garmin, TomTom. Better product AND continuous innovation.

Exponential technologies

Moore's law: cost per technology, 1,000,000,000 x over 40 years, several
examples for transistors, storage, images, network speed.

10 disruptive technologies

Internet of things - sensors 1000x in just 7 years. 1300 sensors per person per
year
Wearable washable shirts with embedded DKG sensors
   Vehicle to vehicle communications V2V
   Nest
All of these gazillions of sensors are generating gobs of data all the time.
   Bronto-data and epto-data
3d printing
The guy who invented the wheel was an idiot. The guy who invented the other
3 was a genius - Sid Caesar
Invisalign printed 17 million sets of dental braces in a 24x7 lights out
facility last year
AI
Robotic/sAuto cars
   1918 - 7.7% of Americans owned a car. In 1929 80%. What happened? GMAC
financing!
1986 Kodak invented digital imaging with a 1.4 megapixel sensor
Kodak KNEW that digital imaging revolution was coming
Kodak did not capitalize on the forecast
BUSINESS model innovation is just as important as technical innovation
Electric vehicles
   Tesla electronc vehicles are disrupting
Electronc motors 5x as efficient as gas engine
Uses less energy overall (15k in gas over 5 years vs 1500 in
electricity over 5 years
   Less expensive to maintain
8 year warranty. 90% fewer parts
   Free charging at Telsa stations
This is a disruptive business model
Cost of E V will be equal to avg cost of US car, 31$. That's SUX YEARS.
All new cars will be electric by 2030 (or sooner)
Oil will be obsolete by 2030
4 other disruptive technologies that went off the screen fast - look out!

We have entered an era of permanent disruption.

Every industry in the world will be disrupted in the next 10-15 years.

Tony's Book: .Clean Disruption, published couple months ago.
information technologies are at the core of these permanent disruption.

This is not in the future. This is happening right now.
Choosing to wait is choosing to be disrupted

End of Tony Seba's keynote about Disruption

Paul Appleby returns to the stage, commenting that the world is changing
outside the company, but inside the company it has not been changing as rapidly
as it needs to. Information technology can be used to drive the change.

Montage of ENGAGE videos, including shots from the party at Universal last night

Paul: can't wait to see what it looks like in a year!

See you at Engage 2015 September 8-15, 2015 in Las Vegas.

As a further example of disruptive technologies, I purchased Tony Seba's
book, Clean Disruption of Energy and Transportation, while seated in the
audience.

He signed my IPad with a marker, and I have already finished reading it...

Well... Maybe a little exaggeration there

It is usually the experts and the insiders who miss the effect of
disruption.

Disruption from below

Disruptive products are initially less capable than the existing technology
They improve quality at a faster rates and displace the mainstream

Who would want a computer in their house? Print newspapers, digital
photography, cellular telephony as examples of disruption from below

Disruption from above

Superiors products and services which are more capable are far more
expensive at the start, these do not innovate or improve as rapidly, but
they cut their costs dramatically and thus disrupt the market. Best example
is Tesla Motors.

Big Bang disruption

Google maps disrupted Garmin, TomTom. Better product AND continuous
innovation.

Exponential technologies

Moore's law: cost per technology, 1,000,000,000 x over 40 years, several
examples for transistors, storage, images, network speed.

10 disruptive technologies

Internet of things - sensors 1000x in just 7 years. 1300 sensors per person
per year
Wearable washable shirts with embedded DKG sensors
   Vehicle to vehicle communications V2V
   Nest
All of these gazillions of sensors are generating gobs of data all the
time.
   Bronto-data and epto-data
3d printing
The guy who invented the wheel was an idiot. The guy who invented the
other 3 was a genius - Sid Caesar
Invisalign printed 17 million sets of dental braces in a 24x7 lights out
facility last year
AI
Robotic/sAuto cars
   1918 - 7.7% of Americans owned a car. In 1929 80%. What happened? GMAC
financing!
1986 Kodak invented digital imaging with a 1.4 megapixel sensor
Kodak KNEW that digital imaging revolution was coming
Kodak did not capitalize on the forecast
BUSINESS model innovation is just as important as technical innovation
Electric vehicles
   Tesla electronc vehicles are disrupting
Electronc motors 5x as efficient as gas engine
Uses less energy overall (15k in gas over 5 years vs 1500 in
electricity over 5 years
   Less expensive to maintain
8 year warranty. 90% fewer parts
   Free charging at Telsa stations
This is a disruptive business model
Cost of E V will be equal to avg cost of US car, 31$. That's SUX
YEARS.

Paul Appleby returns to the stage, commenting that the world is changing
outside the company, but inside the company it has not been changing as
rapidly as it needs to. Information technology can be used to drive the
change.

Montage of ENGAGE videos, including shots from the party at Universal last
night

Paul: can't wait to see what it looks like in a year!

See you at Engage 2015 September 8-15, 2015 in Las Vegas.

2014-10-17 Thread Adams, Peter
Currently (version 1.0) we have designed for and tested the Remedy with Smart
IT native app only for tablets (Android & iOS, 7'' and higher screen size).
Given the smartphone screens are typically smaller, we plan to rearrange some
of the screens for the smartphone version of the app that should come out not
too far out.

Back to more sessions now

I love it. Hawaiian shirts in Florida is "serious."

Today is intense. No morning keynote, right into sessions at 8:00 AM, with
the SmartIT launch in 3 hours. Be sure to watch! For what it's worth, I've
seen some material which amounts to a preview of the launch, and it will be
worth getting your managers to watch!
