Re: Email engine refuses to send messages it thinks are spam

2010-09-09 Thread Walters, Mark
The error message you are seeing is coming from your mail server, not Remedy.
You need to check with your mail administrators what the definition of spam is
to determine why it thinks messages from ARS are being treated as such.

We have issues with Remedy refusing to sent outbound email due to its spam
content. The problem is that this error also affects legitimate notices about
tickets whose field data sometimes includes spam information. This can cause a
group to not be notified about a case assigned to them.

A severe error, message number 0 is logged, with text that begins:

554 5.7.1 Message refused because it is spam

Is there a way to disable or control this specific error check? I don't see
any options to do so for the emaildaemon.properties file for either ARS 6.0 or
7.5. It would be especially great if it could be set to check only the headers
(like the To: address), but not the message body.

This occurs on both
AR System 6.00.01 patch 1351
Email Engine 6.00.01 patch 1539
Solaris/Oracle

as well as

ARS 7.5.00 patch 006
Email Engine 7.5.00 patch 006
Solaris/Oracle

That message is not from Remedy. It is from the email server you are sending
your emails to (i.e. Exchange, GroupWise, ...). Check with the Email server
administrators on their rules.

Thanks all, I must have been mistaken, then! (Plus a BMC person
responded separately, suggesting it must be outside ARS.)

A little difficult for me to test since I don't think I can personally
use the same outgoing mail server our Remedy server uses, but it must be
spam flagging on our mail system.

You can go to the email message form and (as a test) maybe create an
outgoing message to your email address that has a subject and body that you
should go through. Possibly a subject line you've received before with a
body that just says 'test'. I would stay away from any links or
attachments in a test - just a real basic msg.

In the error message does it give any clue about what email server the error
came from?

Dont bother testing, Talk to the Email server administrator first, not
only can it be content, keyword based, but it can also be how many
addresses are on the TO field or CC field. Or it can be how many
emails are sent / second from your system.

Re: Email engine refuses to send messages it thinks are spam

2010-09-09 Thread David Durling

Thanks for the other responses. To answer the questions:

There's no clearly identifiable server in the Error Log records - the
Generated By field says Mail Box. Though there is perhaps a clue that
it's the mail server, which I'll pass on to our mail admins.

The messages I care about are apparently filtered on the message body.
I have been manually altering them to strip out the spam data (say, a
complaint about spam that lists the spam within it), and then I'm able
to successfully send the messages.

But I'll talk to my email admins when they have time.

Thanks all,

David
