[AsburyPark] Last Night's BOE Meeting
At last night's BOE meeting, the state intervention team gave a 90 minute update on all aspects of their assistance to the school district from Early Childhood through High School. Of all 600 school districts in New Jersey, they are spending the most time and resources here due to the often dysfunctional, but fixable in their view, nature of our school system. Early Childhood and Elementary are the brightest spots here, and there are plans to ameliorate and remediate the secondary level with initiatives from our own Board of Ed, a Middle School Initiative and Grant from UMDNJ, the NJEA, and assistance provided by the State. There will be more transitional Summer school programs than ever before to keep the progress moving ahead. The Intervention Team, headed by Assistant State Commissioner of Ed Dr. Penelope Lattimer, as well as the Board expressed their admiration for the work being accomplished by the Acting Superintendent, James Parham. The three students who won the district-wide spelling bee, the Teachers of the Year, the Students who have been named to the Governor's School and the Monmouth County Student of the Month (a phenomenal young lady from our high schoolthere's a story about Carlita in today's Press) were all honored. Also last night the Board passed a corrective action plan to correct irregular business procedures that have needed correcting for a very long time. The present law firm was also re-appointed for another year with one abstention and one no vote. Due to a very long agenda and unusually long closed session, the meeting ended well past 11 PM. As usual, I must state that I do not speak for the Board. Frank D'Alessandro, BOE member Yahoo! Also last night the Board passed a corrective action plan to correct irregular business procedures that have needed correcting for a very long time. Like what? Any idea how much additional funding (above abbott) is being provided to AP for these programs - grants, state time etc? Congrats to all the success - keep it going - while spending less. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] wow - how great was the Wave Festival?
So great apparently that even Tri City News now recognizes that music just might be the best way to revitalize and bring people back to the city! I guess seeing a couple thousand people spending lots of money and loving Asbury does wonders for your belief system. It took them a while, but maybe they're coming around... Yahoo! [AsburyPark] triangles
I see the landscaping started to go in today in the center triangles. I thought no trees were allowed inside them? I guess pine trees are allowed. Yahoo! Nice work, Frank - and to the rest of your colleagues on the Board! It really sounds like there's light at the end of the tunnel - and not an on-coming train, either! I did read about Carlita and your appropo quotes about her. It's amazing how these roses bloom out of the fog of dysfunction. I'm glad the Press is playing up these reports higher in the paper. These kids deserve even more accolades than their peers from high functioning districts. Sharon is right on, as always, you deserve a break kid!! [AsburyPark] Re:Madison Marquette
Where was Werner last night? Werner, you weren't at the council meeting to hear Ed Johnson actually say, Werner was right! Unfortunately, I didn't catch exactly what he meant that you'd said, but I believe the reference was to some advice you'd given the council about the sewer lines by Convention Hall Plaza. Maybe you could ask Ed to repeat it. I wrote up some notes from last night's meeting. So they should appear on AsburyRadio.com pretty soon. Very few people were at the meeting, not even Nancy of APP, maybe because it was an add-on, to make up for last week. In deference to those who have asked that I just report the news and leave my opinions out, I did so to the best of my ability. However, now that I'm not writing a news report, I have to say a touch of sadness hit me when they were discussing the signs - banners more so I think -- that MM wants to put around the waterfront. This was during the work session, so we -- the audience -- didn't have the opportunity to ask MM questions. But, it would really be sad if they intend to wrap our neglected landmarks in banners, to hide their pock- marked faces from potential retail and condo consumers lest they be turned off. Yes, part of me wants to pull a sheet over them and put a sign saying closed for refurbishing - like Disney does. But, I don't see serious refurbishing - restoring - going on. Am I missing it? Is there work being done according to the Secretary of the Interior standards, as the DEP's historic office mandated? Please someone say it is! Take a picture and send it into this board. And as for retail saving the day, I just don't see it. I've always held that the consumer-driven economy was a product of the baby boom - a phenomonon of that era. But Baby Boomers are unloading 'stuff' at an alarming rate - it's almost a counter-acquisition trend. The times they are a changin'. One of America's greatest strength's has been its innovation. Yankee ingenuity. We've got to get back to that core. BTW, I like the pine trees in the roadbed islands, if they'll stay dwarfed like the ones along Deal Lake. They just seem kind of Carmel, CA-ish. I know, Werner, they'll block the breeze and Bradley wouldn't have had them... Happy Memorial Day everybody! Maureen --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, oakdorf [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The concept is great, it is the root and foundation of Asbury Park. Too bad THE PLAN DOES NOT SUPPORT IT. Werner, you're right. Boardwalks are a funny thing. For example, The Racetrack at M. Park. - go to the boardwalk area at the track. Old AP used to advertise how close it was to monmouth park. - to get a kohr's ice cream, you had to go to freehold mall (still there?), but never tastes the same. - go to Monmouth Mall to go tothe boardwalk. Call that a boardwalk with chineese food?? Never (not to offend anyone, just supporting werner) While we await the Salt Water Cafe...hopefully they will have that REAL boardwalk menu at least outside and for lunch/early dinner. We need that Taylor Pork Roll and either a real boardwalk hot dog. Maybe they'll let me fire up my cotton candy machine one day. Mottola comes across as a real shore and sure guy. Let's see how they recreate the Wesley Plaza enetertainment zoned...which will also have RETAIL. Let's see a couple of big cheap beach stores. The kind that want to sell their stuff. Bring back Kohr's. Not coor's. Yahoo!
