[AsburyPark] Remodeling Asbury Park
Just a reminder that I have advocated against Remodeling Asbury Park for years. Two goals in mind - to create economic success and to preserve history for future generations. The current thinking completely conflicts with those goals... - Focus on a year-round residential beachfront - Choking down the wide streets and altering traffic patterns - Demolition of the Palace, Albion, Jersey et. al, etc - Lack of sufficient parking for beachfront activities - Ferris wheels/waterslides, etc on green acres view corridors - Loss of Wonder Bar, Fast Lane, Baronet, etc - you get the pattern... ??? Unless the basic mind-set and direction of the pattern changes either by a rezoning of wholesale recrafting of the WRP, Asbury park will be.history.. Keep the course and the City will never rise to it's potential. Any word on the secret global settlement ??? Werner Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Asbury fleshing out details of Springwood Ave. vision
Asbury fleshing out details of Springwood Ave. vision Affordable housing percentage debated Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 11/1/07 BY NANCY SHIELDS COASTAL MONMOUTH BUREAU ASBURY PARK As the plan to rebuild Springwood Avenue nears final approval at year's end, City Council members will have to decide one of the plan's burning issues is 20 percent affordable housing the right percentage for new housing units built along the avenue? The question came up again this week when city Planning Board members discussed their own recommendations for the plan for the historic but blighted corridor, which they said they'll make official in coming weeks and send on for consideration by the council. The plan now under review calls for a variety of housing, stores, offices, park land and entertainment venues along a seven- to eight-block stretch and states that at least 20 percent of the new residential units be sold or rented at levels affordable to low- and moderate-income households. The plan also states that, while it is mandating a 20 percent affordable housing set-aside, a greater percentage of affordable units in each redevelopment project are preferred. But the city planners decided to recommend that 20 percent be the maximum percentage of affordable housing, saying there are more than 300 units of public housing in the immediate area, and hundreds more elsewhere in town. That countered what some residents and community leaders are fighting for up to 40 percent affordable housing along the new Springwood corridor to give greater housing opportunities to poor residents. Planning Board member Vernice McGriff, a former city Housing Authority commissioner, led a charge against making low-income housing a significant part of the affordable housing requirement at the board's planning workshop Monday night. I want affordable, but upscale affordable, McGriff said. I don't want Springwood Avenue to stick out. . . . We need to clean that up, we need to show a different look. At one point, board chairman Dan DiBenedetto said a 20 percent mandatory set-aside was too high, but he agreed to language to have it not exceed 20 percent. I wouldn't advocate more than 20 percent, said Fred Heyer, the board's planner. That does conflict with everything we heard at public sessions, said Donald Sammet, the city's director of planning and redevelopment, who drafted the redevelopment plan. Trina Scordo, one of the 17 members of the Springwood Avenue Advisory Committee and chairwoman of the Progressive Action Subcommittee on Springwood Avenue, was one of those asking for a higher percentage of affordable housing in a recent letter to the media. Scordo urged the City Council to define low-income housing based on the median income of Asbury Park's working poor, not the skewed median income of the entire city. Further, we support an increase in the percentage of affordable and low-income housing to 40 percent rather than the at least 20 percent' in the current plan, Scordo said. She said that while the current draft plan is an improvement over the original plan two years ago, it is not yet a community-building document, which she said would show measurable benefits in low-income housing, jobs for local residents, and plans for a community center and recreation developed by local residents. Many of these items are being left to the redeveloper agreement, as opposed to working with Springwood Avenue-area residents to develop a community-benefit agreement, Scordo said. On another aspect of the plan, the city planners are expected to recommend some houses to be allowed along Springwood on the most western commercial blocks leading to the Neptune boundary. The plan now calls for those blocks to have a mix of first-story businesses to serve the surrounding residential communities and upper-story residences that will provide a continuous stream of activity in the zone, both during the day and evening hours. Planning Board member David Parreott Jr., who lives in one of the city's historic homes just off Springwood, reminded the planners of the need for services such as a Laundromat and mom and pop stores. Other board members said they favored allowing houses to be built along Springwood in that zone. Some board members also suggested having the apartments above the businesses be owner-occupied condominiums, but City Councilman John Loffredo, who sits on the board, and DiBenedetto said rentals should be allowed as stated in the current plan. The reason I said condos in my plan is because I was trying to come up with a solution to saving the Stone Pony that keeps the developers happy, because lets face it... if they are not pleased then they are not going to move along with a project. The developers need to see that there is a solution to building up that block that involves the Stone Pony staying there. And if a concept to save it (and meet there demands at the same time) is in the public eye, then they have little or no excuse as to moving it. Apartments, condos, artist lofts, etc... there are plenty of possibilities for building on this site. Yahoo! Sounds wonderful as long as you can find a developer interested in this project. This plan will not do much good if it only sits on paper. It is not like there is such a demand for homes in this city. Maybe a plan should be created that reflects the conditions of today. So say you're in for $700k for 3 units. That's $233,000 unit without a profit. The plan is great. [AsburyPark] Big Drug Bust
I'll upload the arrest doc to the files section. Long list. Surprisingly, no one from AP. BREAKING NEWS: 47 arrests in major Monmouth County drug bust Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 11/1/07 BY MICHELLE SAHN Story Chat Post Comment County, federal, state and local law enforcement arrested 47 people, seized more than $1 million worth of cocaine and heroin, and dismantled a ring that was supplying the drugs to the Monmouth County area, authorities said. The investigation, Operation Honeycomb, was conducted by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office Narcotics Strike Force and Gang Investigations Unit; the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, New Jersey Division; New Jersey State Police; the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office; and Long Branch, Red Bank, Marlboro, Howell, Keansburg, Neptune and Asbury Park police departments. The investigation began the Fall of 2006, when an undercover officer purchased large quantities of cocaine from someone within the organization, authorities said. That led to the arrest of 47 people in connection with the multi-state narcotics network, that included suppliers working in California, Florida and New York, authorities said. During the investigation, police seized a total of approximately 32 pounds of cocaine, more than 6 1/2 pounds of heroin, four semi-automatic handguns, two bullet proof vests, and approximately $95,000 in cash, according to a news release from the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office. Operation Honeycomb is a great example of cooperation among all law enforcement agencies, particularly the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, which took a street level buy a year ago, to the dismantling of an organization that was responsible for transporting and distributing multiple kilograms of cocaine and heroin from California, Florida, and New York,'' Gerard P. McAleer, Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration New Jersey Division said in the news release. Monmouth County Prosecutor Luis A. Valentin also praised the cooperative efforts of the various law enforcement agencies involving in the year-long investigation. This operation is a classic example of how successful partnerships with federal, state and local law enforcement can benefit our community,'' Valentin said in the news release. Operation Honeycomb successfully identified and arrested the local and national drug distributors and eliminated multiple sources of narcotics destined for the streets of Monmouth County.'' Police are still searching for a Perth Amboy man, Edward A. Santana, 30, whom authorities say is a key member of this narcotic distribution network. He is wanted on a charge of conspiracy to distribute cocaine. Santana is described as a Hispanic male, who is about 6 feet tall and weighs between 160 and 180 pounds. His last known address is 743 Parker Street in Perth Amboy. Anyone with information about Santana's whereabouts is asked to call Detective Todd Rue of the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office at 1- 800-533-7443. Yahoo! My thoughts, exactly! Great post! --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, evosap [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Oh god I love that man. I remember watching him some time ago and I started to realize that he was lecturing. not just being funny, though he always is. he was calling us on our bullshit. yeah preaching never works. i worked in a vegan organic restaurant for years and there IS such a thing as vegetarian fascists. but we could use need a little more awareness. i think there is an inverse relationship between happiness and excessive consumption. people really think labels get them something. I was having an incredibly delicious eggplant parm pizza at mattison park over the summer and this chick stepped up to the bar, put her purse on it, and announced to my friend and i that it was Prada. we hadn't asked, or even mentioned the purse. That to me is dis - ease. the weird thing is that has happened to me before, the other time on Block Island with a Prada shoe. a chick took off her shoe, put it on the bar and announce Prada. Shit like that...or I should say my response to shit like that has given me a wicked wrinkle between my eyes. as my nephew would say what tha..? i don't know what the best way is to tell people that they are poisoning their children's environment by using the detergent they do, or wacking out their endocrine system with the lotion they use..but it's true. cheers!
