[AsburyPark] sports and education
Mario and Denise had a short discussion about the varying degrees between supporting education and supporting sports. It might not even qualify as a discussion. Both were making a valid point, and each of their points were valid. A few years back, APHS parents were in an uproar over a controversy regarding a APHS football player. I can't recall the exact details, but it had something to do with eligibility of the star player. I think that in the aftermath, the then Athletic Director got fired and subsequently hit a jail cell for taking bribes as part of the corrupt Ocean Twp Sewer Authority. I was heartened by the extreme show of support by AP parents for their football program, but I came to the same conclusion Mario did. Yes, it was a great show of support for an undefeated football team, but, where, I wondered, was that show of support(and outrage) over the sad state of Asbury's school district? Asbury Park seems to be a front runner, when the team is good support them, when the show is Springsteen support him, but the little guys and the losers are just left behind. Case in point is the nonsensical BS surrounding the little league field. That was such a piece of crap story. Where are the leaders of the community and why wasn't their voices screaming out against the BS? Reidy, the Mayor, Bruno, the Bd of Ed, the school administration. That anything could stop the hard volunteer work of anyone trying to make sports more accessible in a town who's youth are decimated by drugs and gangs is criminal beyond reason. Growing up in Ocean Township and playing little league at Colt Field was a treasured experience that taught life lessons still in use today. To think that the youngsters of AP don't get that equal opportunity is ridiculous. That the kids have achieved so much in the face of such adversity, the HS team going for a championship along with the Pop Warner kids means so much. I hope we all get out there and support them with all we have, I know that I will. Yahoo! Jack, I saw it yesterday. What an eye-opener! There hasn't ever been an honest government, in this country. You only need to watch what actually happened in Boston, during the Revolution and the gradual takeover of this country from its' original inhabitants, with broken treaties, to all out force to placing native Americans on reservations, where they still reside, to this day. All people who immigrated here, have been ostracized and discriminated against, beginning with the Indians and whatever flavor of the day, is. I don't believe in illegal immigration, for those, who immigrated legally and that's all I'll say on that. I also saw the American Prospect on Channel 13 and it dealt with the 60's, the radical left's attempt, to disrupt the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago, the formation of the Black Panther's in 1966, in Oakland, the beginning of the 60's Women's movement, the assassinations and America's refusal to have a dialogue on race and the prison industrial complex and Reagan's stint as governor and how he tried to smother the civil rights movement on Berkeley's campuses in California. As a woman, I've never had any illusions, where most men want us. As a Black person, we take 2 steps forward and 10 back, as far as the Constitution representing us, as Americans. When the Panthers took up the gun, Reagan did his best to take them away and succeeded. You now have a NRA card carrying Vice President, who would shoot you, if you tried to disarm him, so who does the 2nd Amendment represent? Why we fight protects, those in power, by think tank appointees, elected by no one, making policy for the military and selling it through speeches, as original thought. The situation would be a farce if it weren't so tragic. Our lawyers work for us, but for some reason, they have made some sort of crusade in stopping Danny McKee from moving forward. I know I am a frequent critic of the city council, but in this case, the city has given Danny the permits he needs. That should have been the happy end of the story. I hope tomorrow that parents and supporters of the Little League make their feelings of disgust and frustration known. To add to the ridiculousness of the situation, it is my understanding that the State monitors, who have veto power over the BOE(!), are now involved in supporting our lawyers in their position that Danny must jump through ever increasing number of flaming hoops in order to accomplish what should have been a really simple process. I am usually not a conspiracy theorist, but I'd really like to find out just who or what is behind this. Does anyone realize the thousands and thousands of dollars in billing hours that our lawyers have charged the taxpayers in their effort to stop the Little League? My yelling and screaming at the lawyers has accomplished nothing. I have said to them that I hope Danny and the Little League sue the BOE, and if he does, I will be a witness for the Little League, and if it means I have to resign my seat on the BOE in order to do that, then so be it. If the monthly bill for the law firm comes up at tomorrow night's BOE meeting, I will ask that it be separated, so that can have the pleasure of voting against it and explaining why. Government in AP I've come to realize is like living in a family. You build up defenses and mechanisms and ways of interacting with spouses, parents, children and siblings. Sometimes the noise of the past keep us from hearing or seeing what is NOW. We don't really listen sometimes. You build up positions like a military operation and refuse to budge. Take for instance the city and the BOE. Why be at an impasse? I am sure the condemnation of the BOE headquarters is a sore point. I am sure there are even other circumstances I am not aware of. We have to stop being prisoners of the past. We have to recognize that perhaps we were wrong, or even if we were not and the other was, how long do they have to pay for it? And for some reason there is a tendency not to be open in AP (and I assume most places). I give a person/entity more credit when they say I made a mistake. Move one. I don't suggest singing kumbaya around the camp fire, but there has to be a realization that we are all in the same boat. Ultimately I believe most want to get to the same place but just have different ways of getting there. I know the city was aware of the BOE's position of standing in the way of the LL field. Whay was done to bridge the gap I don't know. Nor do I know why if nothing was done. Frank was courageous and spoke out. So instead of placing blame we move forward and fix the problem. That is always my solution. What needs to be done to fix the problem. All else is meaningless. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Indie Mom/Pop Coffee Shop vs. Starbucks: Where to spend those holiday dollars
Truth to tell, Rhonda and Jon Mallek were not really thinking of Christmas this month when they fired a shot across the bow of mighty Starbucks. Still, it turns out the coffee war of Passaic County does get at two of the recurring themes of the season caffeine and where to spend those holiday dollars. The Malleks' story really began more than three years ago when Rhonda, a former events planner, and Jon, a former heavy metal musician turned I.T. executive, got it in their minds to open a coffee shop. He was a coffee obsessive partial to high-test espresso. She was a detail obsessive, intent on creating a place where people would come for the coffee and for whatever amorphous elements of ambience make a place a hangout, a second home, as much as a place selling something. In a message dated 11/27/2007 9:12:31 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Mario and Denise had a short discussion about the varying degrees between supporting education and supporting sports Both were making a valid point A few years back, ... Asbury Park seems to be a front runner, when the team is good support them, when the show is Springsteen support him, but the little guys and the losers are just left behind. Fortunately for me, I taught in a system where academics were a top priority. Academics were complemented, not overshadowed, by sports; and more than enough parents were just as interested in Advanced Placement scores as they were in the game scores. I loved teaching advanced placement, BUT I'm also in favor of fully funded performing arts AND physical education classes for all students: teaching life-long skills for physical well-being. Several years ago, there was a state movement to upgrade phys ed programs so that all student could achieve -- based on their abilities. There would have been less emphasis on competitive activities which ensured losers. It promised life-long leisure activities for physical health and well-being: exercise and games (no small thing for our overweight and diabetic prone nation). Unfortunately, in the budget making processes around the state, phys ed and the arts were seen as lesser priorities. It's sounds cliched, but no less true, that in today's global work force, it's the geek, not the jock, whose prospects are brighter after high school. Boola, Boola! the old Yale football fight song, is quaint but meaningless when we're competing with the techies from India and China and cheap labor from around the world. In light of those assumptions on my part, I found it silly that some Howell parents were bitchin' about not enough recess time in the school schedule. I ran into a colleague yesterday who is connected with that system. He said that the BOE there had recently added 15 more minutes to the teachers' day so that there would be more contact time between teachers and students; if the doting parents have their way, that extra 15 minutes will now be for recess. That the kids have achieved so much in the face of such adversity, the HS team going for a championship along with the Pop Warner kids means so much. I hope we all get out there and support them with all we have, I know that I will. Sports, like motherhood and apple pie, will never be short on public advocates. But academics (forget English only -- it's math, science, foreign language, civics and skills for life-long learning we need) seem destined to remain begging for money and committed supporters. == BTW: Boola, Boola! was before my time. [AsburyPark] DL BBQ broke into our yard.
Okay... So we arrive in Asbury on Friday afternoon and our gate was open and the bottom slats are broken off the brace. We go into the backyard and nothing is disturbed except the wall of DL BBQ which now has a piece of cardboard and a scrap of plywood nailed over the window. They didn't even bother to leave a note or lock the gate behind them. They left the gate swinging in the wind, letting any passerby know that we were gone for Thanksgiving. When DL first fired up the smoker and we couldn't open our windows for days we spoke to them about the impact of their vent on the surrounding houses. We were met with blank faced, arrogant indifference and, not surprisingly, that's what we got when we asked about them trespassing on our property. Later, the maitre d'/waiter admitted to coming into our yard but he claimed he didn't break the gate. So we filed a police report and had to have the police go into the restaurant and talk to them. Does anyone know who owns that building now? 1206 Main St. Any advice on this kind of issue is appreciated. Linda Griggs Yahoo! Wow, that's a terrible story. Good thing you called the cops. You might also have a legal issue with them if their smoker is impacting your lifestyle. They really need to be made to understand that they are part of a community and that it benefits them to be friendly with their neighbors. Maybe you could extend them some kind of olive branch in order to help them become more friendly. It doesn't sound like they are going to make the first move, so it might benefit you to make an attempt. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, lindagriggsartist [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Okay... RE: [AsburyPark] Any Maxie updates?
Hey Jack, Unfortunately there have been no more sightings of Maxie, I still have hope that she will be found and returned to us, all that I hope for is at the least someone took her in and is taking good care of her. We will never give up looking for her. oh god...i was gushing with infatuation after having a couple a beers by the tree. cannot wait for the fireworks! and for shiver to open! i love MM! don't know how they deal with the goons. maybe they will do a fun dance party with a great dj (AP needs to work on the dj pool imo)..though what can be done about the sound in the hall? great idea for the free parking, though i think we need the cash! i have to admit i was hoping for a little more off the wall ideas on the budget deficit. development, development yeah yeah yeah...though i love the moving of city hall...to springwood! that's keady's idea and it needs some more voices behind it. i still think we should chip in. and be very aware of the economy ap is sitting inand uh...what about the budget committee? someone on this list has the noodle for it. cheers Yahoo!
