[AsburyPark] PUBLISHER DECEIVED, CON GUSTO

2007-12-15 Thread Traderdube
PUBLISHER DECEIVED, CON GUSTO

For the eight years he's been publishing the Asbury Park-based triCity
News, Dan Jacobson has been angling for a dinner invite from Red Bank
Mayor Pasquale Menna.

As readers of redbankgreen know, Menna is a foodie who has his own
chef's smock with his first name emblazoned in red over the breast.

Jacobson has been aware of Menna's cooking jones longer than we have,
and has gotten miles of copy out of it, too.

In print, Jacobson rarely mentions Menna without including an open,
rather shameless plea for an invitation to one of Menna's dinner
parties. In particular, he pines a forkful of Menna's broccoli orecchiette.

It's embarassing, really, an exercise in groveling that never ends.

So given his infatuation with Menna's vaunted culinary skills (which we
at redbankgreen can attest to, as can a bunch of kids at the Red Bank
Primary School), it's easy to see how Jacobson allowed himself to be
deceived, as he apparently was this week, into thinking that he was
making progress with his campaign.

The latest triCity reports that someone sent the newspaper, anonymously,
a recipe for orecchiette with broccoli rabe and spicy sausage.

Jacobson ran the full recipe (Bring a large pot of water to a boil with
the salt...) and a headshot of Menna. And in couple of lines of text
pounded out at the triCity's Red Bank bureau — a worn leather chair at
Zebu Forno — Jacobson speculates on who sent it.
We've written about the famed dinner parties of Red Bank Mayor Pasquale
'Pat' Menna, where Orecchiette with Broccoli is a specialty. But we've
never been invited! Did the mayor send us a Christmas gift... or did
some reader take pity on our taste buds? We prefer the former... we do
believe, we do believe...

Of course, actually contacting Menna to ask him whether it was his
recipe and if he'd sent it isn't Jacobson's style. Thought it's printed
on newsprint, the triCity is essentially a blog — by which we mean a
running opinion piece — that's only vaguely aware that the Internet
exists. Actual reporting only gets in the way of publishing deadlines
and Jacobson's trips to the bank.

So we called Menna ourselves.

I have no idea what's he's talking about, Menna said, adding that he
hadn't seen this week's triCity and wasn't aware of the item.

All I know is that it didn't come from me, he said of the recipe.
I've been concerned about more important things.

He alluded to the recent shootings and other crimes on the West Side, as
well as to the political confusion in Matawan, where he serves as the
borough attorney. (Last month's mayoral election there resulted in a
dead-even tie between the incumbent — and occasional Menna dinner
companion — Mary Aufseeser and Republican challenger Paul Buccellato,
resulting in the need for a do-over. The election has been scheduled for
Jan. 15, two weeks after the borough is obligated by law to do it's
annual government reorganization, leaving open not only the question of
who'll be in charge in the interim, but also who gets to vote — all
registered voters, or only those who voted the first time around?)

He's been so busy, Menna tells us, that I haven't even been cooking.

Of course, we're just teasing Jacobson here. While all of the foregoing
is true, it's really no more than a Jacobsonian pretext to get readers
to pick up the triCity this week.

Why? Because it contains an excellent cover story about redbankgreen —
well reported and tasty, too.

I always said before the movie Dogma came out, that God plays in Asbury

I would love to see a Hard Rock, Asbury Park and a House of Blues,
Asbury Park! Why? Every damned City I visit, that's where I either
eat or go for the music! Atlantic City has BOTH! I've visited Hard
Rock, Montreal, AC and N.O., ate last month in the HOB, AC! Music was
so (volume), LOUD, but the food was excellent! You want to draw the
21 and older crowd? Build them and they will come!

[AsburyPark] Re: Little League

2007-12-15 Thread asburycouple
It is amazing to me that something that seems to have always been so
broadly supported by the people of this city (who usually never agree
on anything) is being scuttled by an attorney and a monitor who don't
live here. Aren't there so much more important issues that the
school board attorney and monitor should be focused on - like the
fact that we are still paying Dr. Lewis or the fact that the school
performance needs tremendous improvements? That's what the monitor
was brought in to fix - not this. Are the real problems just too
hard? Is that why the monitor has chosen to focus here instead - to
justify their existence without having to tackle the real and hard
issues?

This is just another bad joke on the people of Asbury Park. We can
never seem to help ourselves, but clearly those who are supposed to
help from outside can't or won't either. Stopping the Little League

2007-12-15 Thread 2fine4u
You and I both know, that Jesus is the reason for the Season! It's
what you, I and so many others celebrate. Let's remember that Jesus,
the Nazarean, was Jewish, first and his followers, became
Christians, be they Roman, Armenian, Coptic or Othodox Catholics,
then you have your Luthurans, Presbyterians, Baptists, Episcapalians
and any other Christian Faiths, that don't see themselves, as Papists.
I had a menorah, until last year, when I gave it and the candles, to
a Jewish boy, that works with my daughter, who was delighted, to
receive it. It was from Israel. I just wish I had seen his face! It
sits at his work station and he is teaching my daughter about the faith.

Back in the 90's I came upon a street fair on 12th St., near
Washington Square, bought a ton of beautiful things, the 2nd weekend
in May, which I gave as Xmas gifts, that year, '96. This kindly old
Jewish man, took me into the 12th Street Temple. We corresponded by
mail and telephone, until he passed away. See, I see the beauty in
everything. I will never forget his kindness. He found, that my name
is Sharon Grace; both Hebrew and took to me. I still have his
letters. Mario calls me Amazing Grace and I like that, just fine.

Just celebrate whatever it is you like. I celebrate all 3, Christmas,
Hannukah and Kwanzaa! Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Happy Kwanzaa,
to All of You! God Bless!

And I'd have no problem with that.

However, to celebrate Christmas but ditch the name, that's a very
different thing than not celebrating it at all. That's a
deliberate insult. It's no oversight either. They made a conscious
 decision to change the name.

Imagine the outrage if AP changed the name of another holiday. If
we didn't acknowledge Kwanzaa by its name, Hannukah by its name, Gay
Pride day by its name, I'd complain with those groups.

 I don't know why the favor isn't returned. I know I can't do
 anything about it either.

Like I said, probably more than a few private snickers at my expense
 because it does upset me.

Next AP retailer to go broke without my $3,000.00 won't be
snickering that day, and neither will I.

But I might bring it up to Gilmour.

Mitchell is in conflict, because he is on the board of Disney and has

It also seems to me, that they beat the hell out of Barry Bonds, while
overlooking Andy Pettit, the Rocket, who injected his, into his
buttocks and others. Bonds stated, he didn't knowingly take
anything, so why is Bonds lying and the others de-nying? They ALL
look pretty big, to me. The steroids have been used since the late
70's, were called vitamins and everyone looked the other way!

Double standard, as usual! Asterisk for Bonds, next to his name and a
slap on the wrist, for all others. It's always about race!

You are correct Sharon. Clemens in particular should be treated
exactly as Bonds. Bonds is the most dominant post world war II
hitter, ditto for Clemens as pitcher.

Both would have made it to the HOF without juice. Both has that
tell tall sign of juicing by having their numbers get better in
their late 30's and early 40's. Both are blowing the hell out of
everyone else's records, unfairly.

The Olympic governing body does it right - they stripped Marion
Jones. If baseball were as pure then Bonds, Clemens, Pettitte.
Tejada, etc. would all have their rings and records stripped.

Hitters and Pitchers? Hammerin' Hank and Tom Terrific are still my

together for years, but is changing the past as well. The people of
Asbury Park voted for the Little League Field to be there, and
that's
 where it should remain.

We do indeed need a first class facility as well at the
Intermediate School. These kids have been playing on a disgusting
moonscape there, much to the shame of the BOE and the people
responsible for maintaining that field. But do not let the state
monitor/viceroy/czar confuse the issue. Do not let the perfect be
the
enemy of the good. In time we can and must have decent facilities
at
both sites. But now it's the long-suffering Little League's turn to
get the improvements at the present field that they have worked so
hard to pay for and work towards.

A man who has been here five minutes, forces us to pay him a
ridiculous amount of money ($600 a day plus expenses five days a
week,
52 weeks a year, all while he continues to pull down a hefty
pension)
to put forth edicts like some potentate out of Zanadu could better
spend his time and our money helping to solve problems that are
really
problems; and we have enough of those to keep anyone busy for a
 lifetime.

Frank I'll get off me soapbox now D'Alessandro
