[AsburyPark] Q - Safari vs Firefox

2008-12-16 Thread wernerapnj

I intentionally posted twice since I see a problem with line returns
in Safari. Anyone else see the first one as broken up lines ?

Thanks - Werner

They do it very well in Long Branch @ Mcloone's and Serena.. and people
use it at $10+ per or you can park in the pay garage once all the free

LOL - A bunch of people standing inside blocking the exit/entry to
stay dry while waiting for their ride - Suddenly several orders for
drinks are made - One for the road in the truest fashion.

Yeah - OK - - bad design is bad design.

[AsburyPark] Bad Design Explained

2008-12-16 Thread wernerapnj

Installation of the awnings on the 1st Ave Pavilion has started. I
stopped to take a closer look and take some photos.

I know most will say 'They look nice'. However I want to point out
some technical details that were - Overlooked.

The awnings appeared in the Planning Board renderings to be functional
parts of the buildings. Solid and useful to keep people out of the
rain. The reality is that they are superficial design elements, very
poorly designed.

First - They are open on top, not solid. There are open slats
perpendicular to the building wall. No protection from rain or snow.
Isn't that the basic purpose of awnings or canopies? To offer
protection from the elements? Standing under these will get you just
as wet as standing in the street.

Second - The slats are angled and shaped like wings creating a louver
with the open top side facing North. The prevailing winds in this area
come from the north, especially the most objectionable weather. That
wind and rain will be captured by the 'wings' and directed down right
on top of whoever is foolish enough to stand under these
awnings in an attempt to stay dry.

Completely useless - Bad design, non functional, No accounting for
local weather conditions, No thought as to what awnings are for - to
provide protection from the elements and make things comfortable for
ones customers and tenants.

Another example of architects having no practical real life
experience. But it 'looks nice'.

Hi Jeanne,
I rent a house I own in AP for $1600 per month plus utilities. It's a 3
bedroom/2 bath. I don't think there are very many 2 bedroom, single
family houses in AP. If you google house for rent Asbury Park, NJ
you will get more information.

[AsburyPark] Re: Bad Design Explained

2008-12-16 Thread Jack Pitzer
It's hard to convince people that something has been poorly designed in the
case of our
boardwalk. It was such as mess, for so long, that even bad design is better
then what we
had before.
Does that justify what we now have? Good question, but it is what it is, and
unless we want
our boardwalk to be a perpetual construction site, we have to learn to live
with it.
We honestly can't expect a redesign to occur at this point.
And, I'm beginning to wonder if anybody in this cities administration is going
to take MM
to task about their elimination of the band shell. What a huge waste in my
opinion. As a
person that both attended and performed in performances up there, I can
honestly say it
was a great place to enjoy music, and it's a huge loss in my opinion.
As for the bad design, well, to me, MM made a huge mistake in their choice of
designer,
and a huge mistake by not attempting to create a more vintage, unique look that
played
off of the height of AP's popularity. As it stands now, the boardwalk has
little or no
personality looks wise. It's generic and pedestrian. Not memorable.
But, I believe we are stuck with it.

You watch too much TV! Hair shirt, huh? I've bought toys for Blue
Star Mothers, Toys, for Toys for Tots, donated money at the checkout
of Shop-Rite, donated canned goods for a food drive, hell, when do I
get anything?

Yeah, I know, Tis the season to be jolly and all that, so I bought
myself, 2 Whitman's Samplers! 1 for guests and 1 for ME! A box of
candy with directions, so you get to eat the ones YOU want! I've sent
out 4-25 card boxes of Christmas cards! You happy now, Post Office?
Watched practically EVERY Christmas Movie EVER made, so I could cry
into fancy Kleenexes! Going across the street to watch cute kids do a
Christmas Play, next week, (bringing Kleenex to that, too)! I even
have a cute female MOOSE in a Sleigh! Thank you, Sarah Palin!

Going to cuddle up in my Jammies on Christmas Eve, with a full shot of
Southern Comfort in a cup of egg-nog and watch Midnight Mass!
Fa-La-La-Lah, La La La Lah! So there! Merry Christmas, everybody!

Nah, learned about hair shirts way before the 500 channels, but nothing on
them: in parochial school when they taught about the mendicant orders. We
used to goof on the idea and suggest that's why vocations fell off.

Years later, it came up again when I taught The Canterbury Tales. Kids
still laughed at the idea.

Might be a good time now to resurrect all those old kinds of penance--for
all the malfeasance being exposed in the public and private sectors.
