[AsburyPark] Fwd: Snow Emergency Update
From: tom.gilm...@cityofasburypark.com To: asburyst...@aol.com Sent: 12/30/2010 10:00:45 A.M. We were out till 4am this morning and are just getting up again to go out to start again. You are absolutely right, it has not been easy. We had 30+ inches of snow on the ground with snow drifts that cut our effective plowing power in half. The depth and weigh of the snow made it necessary for tractors to hit first then followed by snow plows. I know as my own street was just done late yesterday. To make matters worse, we have cars that jumped out on the road igorning the state of emergency that shut down the plowing operations several times. This cost us more than a day to deal with. Several times I myself had to direct traffic on Asbury Avenue, Main Street and several side streets where cars in traffic had blocked in our snow plows from all sides. The State and County just arrived yesterday (over the night Tuesday into Wednesday) as did our towing companies which hampered our ability to get cars out of the way so that we could plow Main Street. These past few days have been an absolute challenge every step of the way, but thank goodness our crews never gave up and kept going. I wish every street could have been first, but that was not the case. This was not a matter of not being out there. It was a matter of where do you start and how to work your way through traffic, abandon cars, medical emergencies to get to every street. Our crews have been out there 24/7 since early Sunday afternoon and will continue to do so until we reach everyone. With regard to summons, it is absolutely necessary as we now have cars parked on the snow routes blocking traffic and preventing the next step of plowing (widening the roads and getting down to the blacktop). People have parked their cars angled into the traffic and plowing lanes and that can't happen. Giving summons is never good, but giving summons with no warning is even worse. Our messages to the community have been very clear and present. Our 911 Reverse, Website, Facebook and Greetings from Asbury Park have been constant and will continue to be forth coming. I value the list as a great resource, while I have not had time to thoroughly read each message I have had the opportunity to scroll through some messages - I have seen both helpful (Amy's maps and information sharing), some very justified frustration and concerns and then some just outright nasty posts. I look forward to reading through all of them once the streets are cleared. That has to be my continued priority. Ed Mayor Ed Johnson P.O. Below is the correct message from Mayor Johnson. I hope that this did not cause any further problems: SNOW EMERGENCY UPDATE Dec 30 - 9AM: Statement by Mayor Ed Johnson Regarding Snow Removal At 4 a.m., Asbury Park completed its third night of plowing operations. While our daytime efforts will continue, the overnight efforts have proved much more effective as there was virtually no traffic during those hours. Our efforts have resulted in providing access to almost every street in the city and widening access to major avenues. There are a few areas where we will be working this morning and throughout the day to finally plow and/or provide greater access. We expect to provide full access throughout the city by the end of today. To assist us in these efforts, I am asking residents to avoid parking along snow banks on plowed streets (outside of normal parking spots along the curb or driveways). Our crews are working to widen these streets and can use your assistance in helping them get to get this done. As the snow melts, it will create icy conditions at sundown and overnight. If you must drive, please use extreme caution as there are pedestrians everywhere. Our snow response efforts have been focused on public safety first and we ask for your help to keep everyone safe. We also ask for your help in identifying and clearing space around fire hydrants in your neighborhood. In the event of a fire emergency, this will greatly help to increase the response time needed. Since the snowstorm hit us last Sunday, our crews and citizens have put forth great effort helping one another and getting some semblance of access and mobility back in the city. We have made much progress, but there is still much more work to do. We will continue until it is done. [AsburyPark] Re: iraq or ap
Ok, I have to say again. Yes, this is not Iraq, nor are we trapped in a mine or suffering after Hurricane Katrina BUT just because our situation is not a million other horrible situations that are obviously much worse is irrelevant. The issue is simple. There is no comparing it to any other disaster or other situation. We had a snow storm. We live in a state that gets snow storms periodically. We have a right to ask why our town cannot handle snow removal without thinking Well, I wonder why my street is a mess four days after a storm, but I shouldn't complain because at least I am not in a refugee camp in central Africa. I drove today. AP is MUCH worse than any place else I drove. I walked around with the dog a bit too and it was FREAKING INSANE. People walking like zombies down the center of streets that are still snow covered on day 4. Come on. Yes, this is not the black plague or a nuclear disaster, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't complain about why our town can't seem to remove snow. If we were hit by a giant tidal wave, I wouldn't ask the mayor why my street was a mess, but this is snow. And snow that was from a storm that was predicted DAYS in advance. Why was there no plan? Where were the plows? I have an idea. People at the Jersey shore think we don't get snow. So, when we do, it is a big shock. So, here is my advice. The next time the Weather channel says that we may get a big snow storm, get the powers that be together in a room and come up with an action plan before the first flake. And don't treat the residents of AP like they don't matter. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, cbrianwatk...@... wrote: Trust me, from my personal experience, AP under 10ft of snow, unplowed for 2wks, is a much better stay than The Sandbox Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry -Original Message- From: oakdorf oakd...@...
