I dont know if that's true. But what I do know is we have created a system that
has created generations of folks on assistance. Granted, there has been reform.

My daughter was married by Judge Apostolou. Her Air Force husband
was relocating to New Mexico to Cannon AFB and he wore his dress
uniform and she, her wedding gown. He asked them, if it was okay
to introduce them to the vermin waiting to be seen and they said okay. He
is serving Uncle Sam and this flower, has agreed to join
him! You could hear a pin drop. The atmosphere was worse than
Night Court, if you remember the series.

I haven't had so much as a parking ticket in over 15 years, knock wood
and I live such a corny, square life, that unless I read the papers
or watch the news, I wouldn't have a clue. When I think about it,
all of the people I know are pretty much like myself.

After you've reached about 50, you begin to reassess your life.
I'm good. The only thing I miss is being around other adults, like
a Senior Center. I rant and rave in this group, but seriously, I'm
a corn ball!

Some of you call certain groups undeserving names out of their despair
to lash out for real or perceived injustices. Police brutality,
profiling, lack of opportunity and other disparities lead to persons
getting involved in gangs, where they discuss the disparities. Why?
Deprivation is why. This country speaks of democracy but it isn't
here for all. Depravity leads to depression and drug dependency that
leads to some to take their anger out on otherwise innocent
bystanders.

Unless you're willing to get involved, more incidents are going
to occur. Be ready.

You make a lot of assumptions on why people are on assistance.
Do you realize we're in a recession? Police, Firemen, Teachers
and executives have lost their jobs and yes, there ARE a lot of one-parent,
absentee fathers, drugged out mothers, teen moms, etc.
How do you legislate behavior? Sometimes a foreclosure is the reason, too!
What you propose is illegal and unconstitutional.
The Constitution pertains to the poor, too! No need to change laws to suit you.

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: the guy who couldn't read...

2011-08-17 Thread cbrianwatkins
I agree 100% Sharon

I believe there are ways you can legislate behavior in some manner, and some
states do already

In some states violent crime felons are not allowed to receive financial
assistance, like food stamps and such

Some states drug test etc

I think there are a couple states that are requiring drug tests prior to
getting benefits

What I feel is the problem with government assistance is the loopholes and the
ones who purposely take advantage of the system, here's an example,

My cousins brother in law works full time completely off the books, gets
unemployment (been on it for 74wks), and food stamps (receiving them for
40wks). His off the books job pays more than mine (which is ridiculous). And
get this... the guy buys LOBSTER TAILS every week from Shop Rite with those
food stamps.

So he's making more than his actual job he was laid off from. He is collecting
$1200 every 2 wks from unemployment (NJ Maximum) and he gets free food

My cousin won't allow him in his house until he stops stealing from the
taxpayers

So what our elected officials really need to do is figure out how to close the
loop holes and stop letting people take advantage of it.I don't have the
answers, I wish I did though

Unless you're willing to get involved, more incidents are going
to occur. Be ready.

Well sharon your points, comments and life experiences (and the success of
raising your family) are well taken.

Once again, it's that be ready...cause trouble is waiting..

That's the scary part - for lack of better words.

So why don't the community leaders - all these organizations that ARE there to
help, take action. Talk to the kids and parents.

What are the REAL issues?

 - Is it housing
 - quality of life
 - lack of work - what kind of work would one accept
...

Employment:
 - What kind of programs are in place within the city with city and surrounding
employers.

For example: Are there any intern programs with Jersey Shore Medical - between
the HS and JS?? If not, why not? Seems like a natural.

 - does the city have any interns? How about the chamber of commerce?
How about Madison Marquette. I call them interns, but if the business can't
afford to pay for it, I'd say take it from the school $ or other grant money.
The kids can work 25 hours per week, $9 per hour. That's 225 per week gross. 10
weeks - each kid gets $2250. Take 200 kids. Pennies for such a program. Can you
get kids to work $9.00? IS it worth more to keep them off the street - then go
for it. $12 hour?

 - how about kids that graduated from AP High? Where did they go, what are they
doing now? Anyone know? Does anyone track their careers? Can they come back and
talk to other kids

What kinds of employment programs exist in the school system with a $90 million
budget. (as for employment programs, I meant for the kids - not admin)

There is only so much that can be done. You need intelligent people running
these programs and people that want to participate. Without, you have people
making comments like we gonna burn the place down or be ready.

That is what has to be addressed by those who interact with the local
community. And those leaders should be inviting in african american owned
businesses. And those leaders should ensure that if something is built or
renovated on the west side, that bricks don't get thrown through the windows or
lights shattered.

Would it make difference if you just gave everyone, and I mean everyone
$1,000,000? Every resident, any color.

What do you think?

The one that pisses it away after two weeks would be pissed at the guy who
saved it, right?

that if you make under whatever the number is $34,000??. she gets more benefits
- single with kid.

We cut back her hours - really it was a gift we had her. Tough time answering
the phone, could not type or use word, despite my efforts to teach her. We even
let her take a full day to write one paragraph.

I bought her books. She was more interested in watching reruns of price is
right and still not getting it right.

She had a part time job at pep boys. When we let her go, she was offered to go
full time. But the person who couldn't add up two numbers for me, was sure as
hell able to calculate the cost of going full time at PEP Boys at $13 per hour

Her unemployment and working part-time was worth more to her then working full
time. Then don't forget Mr. Obama's stimulus plan - that extra what - $50 per
week for the unemployed. That was real motivation. She put that towards a
bankruptcy filing to wipe out $48,000 in charge cards her and boyfriend
(unofficial husband racked up). She asked me if it was worth it to spend $2500
to file. I tried to explain to her that that was one great investment. Spend
$2500 to make $48,000. Her beer drinking not real spouse was sure to get a 5 ft
flat screen tv. And of course she had also got suckered into a refi at 11%
along the way. I spent some time with her to heelp her out of that. I really
didn't want to.

Unmployment was nice to her as well. She made sure to make her first trip to
DisneyWorld while unemployed.

She had the heart of gold, but had no office skills.

I guess sometimes the monmouth county food bank has lobsters as well - maybe
Thursdays.

And to be clear, she was a white woman. People here seem to think everything is
directed at group.

So when we (or I get going) - it get's kind of hard when I who busted my ass
since my first lemonade stand in 2nd grade to today,
had gotten stuck with four non-paying tenants (you don't go to jail for not
paying rent in america) - I had no one to turn to. Banks were shut down,
despite having a ton of equity, the IRS could less (they don't don't reduce
what you owe - if you have assets). If you don't pay your taxes, work off the
books and hide it all, they you might be able to scam them.

So yep, be ready. The system is out of whack.

I think we are all for helping our neighbors.

Maybe a thank you here and there would be nice.

[AsburyPark] Last thought..

2011-08-17 Thread oakdorf
I might of said this a few years ago -

How many of you have ever traveled outside of Asbury - really the United States.

Amazing services we have here that many don't appreciate.

Start with food and clean water. Sneakers or shoes. Clothes. Sanitary
conditions - like running water and a indoor toilet.

I know, many places are rundown here.

We have police and justice system (even if you think it's corrupt).

More or less have law and order. You don't get killed for stealing, or for that
matter, killing someone else or forgetting what you did with your kid.

Most people have a roof over their head. Heat when it's cold out. Health care
(we all have it - free or not. I'm on line in the ER with insurance just as
person in front without). In many cases, you're better without. The er may
treat a broken leg wihout insurance - with, they may send you out for xrays or
an mri...)

Not such a bad place America.

Go travel the world and don't stay in a resort.

I'm done posting here for awhile.
