[AsburyPark] Re: What about WIFI on our boardwalk and beach?

2008-08-26 Thread bob73121
I tried to get traction with this idea twice before. Once about one
and a half years ago throgh the UEZ coordinator. My idea then was to
coordinate with the Board of Education, the UEZ, the Chamber of
Commerce, and Asbury Partners to fund a WiFI for the City as a whole.
One, it would give school kids a free link to the outside world, and
two, it would have provided a great publicity link to both the
downtown and the boardwalk areas. Nothing was done.
Lastly, I talked to Gary Motolla about one year ago about this idea,
and he did not show any interest indicating problems with the
technology.

Make a deal with Metro, or whoever steps into their shoes, to
complete the parking levels for use and allow them to retain the

We are considering that. Be patient.

Dan:
Are you saying that there is a plan to consider completing the
parking garage for use as a public commercial parking facility,
while possibly selling the air rights for residential development in
the future. What happens to the parking requirements if 224 units
are built on top? Where will those 448 spaces be located? Will the
commercial spaces be reverted to the residential development or will
448 additional residential spaces be placed on higher levels with
the height of the building being raised while still keeping the
public commercial spaces?

Was the vote based on a presentation or did they read the contract?
If a presentation, who made the presentation?
Was the percentage of collected monies included in the presentation

If not, how is it legal for that percenrage to be collected?
What else was in the proposals that weren't included in thge vote?

Is there not other managers or professionals who should have

[AsburyPark] Money to Aid Crime Fight in Asbury Park, Long Branch, and Neptune

2007-09-12 Thread bob73121
$1M to fight crime in 2 counties
Wednesday, September 12, 2007
BY WILLIAM KLEINKNECHT
Star-Ledger Staff

The Justice Department has awarded $1 million in grants to local law
enforcement agencies in Essex and Monmouth counties to combat
violent crime.

The grants, which were announced yesterday by U.S. Sens. Frank
Lautenberg and Robert Menendez, are aimed at helping police in 10
towns in Essex and three in Monmouth purchase equipment and beef up
street patrols.

New Jersey's finest will have the funds they need to acquire new
protective gear, update communications systems and increase
community police patrols, Lautenberg said in a statement. These
resources will help law enforcement remove drugs from our streets
and make high-crime areas safer.

The grants are earmarked under the Edward Byrne Memorial State and
Local Law Enforcement Assistance Grant Program, designed to help
reduce the incidence of violent crime. It is named after a New York
City police officer executed by a Queens drug dealer in 1988.

Among the uses of the grant money will be computers for police in
Newark and East Orange, in-car and on-motorcycle video systems for
Bloomfield, a new prisoner-transport vehicle in Irvington, increased
youth gang investigations in Maplewood and stepped-up foot patrols
in Maplewood, Orange and South Orange.

In addition, West Orange will buy a new evidence storage locker
system, Essex County will improve its records management system, and
Asbury Park, Long Branch and Neptune will pool funds to buy radios
and other communications equipment.

2007-07-30 Thread bob73121
I think that this is a great idea and would be a great thing for the
City. I went to see Tom Gilmore, UEZ, over two years ago regarding
this issue as I suggested that the UEZ get Asbury Partners, the
Chamber of Commerce/Merchants Guild, and the Board of Education
together to champion, fund, get grants, and support this idea for a
number of reasons. It would be a selling point for the waterfront
area; it would be a selling point for the merchants, and it would
afford the City school students the opportunity to get on the net
without paying a monthly fee.

I don't believe it went anywhere at that time.

I would be interested in supporting the initiation of this concept
again as I believe that the above reasons are still valid.

Flanking the main building in the marketplace are two equally long
buildings (North Market and South Market) that expand the market
space for more restaurants, specialty shops, and office spaces. Two
further concave market buildings enclose a circular plaza at the
market's west end.

The open spaces at both the east and west ends of the marketplace

vendors. Most daytime visits to Quincy Market will encounter a large
circular crowd of people standing around a juggler or other unique

It is important that you send an email to Governor Corzine asking
him to veto S-648 (Sweeney).

Legislation (S-648) waiting for Governor Corzine's signature makes
property owners liable for withholding tax for all contractors and

[AsburyPark] SUNDAY STAR_LEDGER

2006-04-30 Thread bob73121
The developer who built it helps to blow it up

Hardly a masterpiece, unfinished Asbury Park oceanfront complex is
imploded at the hands of its creator

Sunday, April 30, 2006
BY MARYANN SPOTO

Star-Ledger Staff

What Henry Vaccaro built, in the end he destroyed.

The unfinished building long reviled as a gargantuan monument to
Asbury Park's failed attempt at redevelopment went down in a heap
early yesterday, and at the demolition controls was the man who
helped construct it 20 years ago.

On his feet again after declaring bankruptcy more than a decade ago,
Vaccaro, now owns the demolition company that has been slowly pulling
the structure apart. He let his grandson push the button to start the
detonation at 7:01 a.m.

There was a little apprehension (yesterday) morning to press the
button, Vaccaro said after the implosion. Because it's a lot of
memories. I was a partner with Carabetta when we built it.

Joseph Carabetta was a Connecticut developer with whom Vaccaro
partnered in the 1980s to try to transform Asbury Park's dilapidated
oceanfront into a residential resort. But when banks holding
Carabetta's funding failed and he lost his financing, the project
came to a screeching halt.

Vaccaro started the C-8 Building, which was supposed to be a 16-story
oceanfront condominium complex, in 1986, but three years later it
stopped at only a shell of 12 floors and has stood neglected, looming
over the Monmouth County oceanfront, ever since.

Vaccaro said he wished the C-8 Building, named for its location on
redevelopment plans, could have been salvaged. He said he tried twice
to bring in new investors but couldn't get the deals to work.

When that site, along with dozens of other properties, was released
from the bankruptcy case in 2001, a new master developer bought the
rights and sold it to a new developer.

I hoped it didn't have to come down, but since it did, I'm glad I
was the one bringing it down, he said.

Vaccaro, who still has his office in Asbury Park, has the demolition
contract. Two years ago, he chopped off part of the building that
jutted 60 feet into Ocean Avenue, and three months ago he removed the
adjacent skeleton of a parking deck.

Yesterday, he finished the job by contracting the implosion work to
Controlled Demolition Inc., the same Baltimore firm that took down
the bombed-out Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City and
the Traymore Hotel in Atlantic City.

Vaccaro had the honors of pushing the button, which he turned over to
his 13-year-old grandson, Alex Bahary.

He told me, 'I know you built it. I didn't like the building, (so)
I'm blowing it up,' Vaccaro said outside the demolition site
yesterday.

Metro Homes Inc. of Hoboken, which plans to put a 224-unit luxury
condominium complex on the site, paid about $200,000 for the
implosion, Dean Geibel, Metro's managing partner, said.

At 7 a.m., the designated detonation time, things started rolling.

In a separate building off-site, Vaccaro and demolition crews waited
for the all-clear call, the cue for detonating 80 pounds of plastic
explosives placed along the building's steel columns earlier in the
week.

On the balcony of the Paramount Theatre two blocks north of the
demolition site, Councilman John Loffredo, long a proponent of razing
the building, waited for his cue. After the countdown chanted by the
crowd with him, he pushed down on a ceremonial plunger.

Back at the building with the demolition crews, Vaccaro let his
grandson push the button that actually activated the charges on the
explosives. People in the room with Vaccaro noticed tears in his eyes
as the building crumbled in a cloud of brown dust.

By 7:01 a.m., nine successive blasts sounded, and then after a brief
pause, another nine more powerful explosions erupted. The building's
west side caved first, dragging down the east side. It was over in 14
seconds.

The crowd, estimated at 2,000, burst into cheers and whistles. When
dust cleared, some shouted, It's still standing, because two
sections of the 12-story building were still some four stories high,
but crews were expected to take down what remained.

Oh my God. It was very emotional for me -- the ultimate of what
we've worked for, Loffredo said It's a wonderful thing. It signals
so much for us. A lot of people when we first got into office said
this wouldn't happen.

Of the old buildings, like Palace Amusements, that have been razed in
recent years to make way for luxury condominiums and townhouses, none
had been more universally ushered out of existence than the massive
structure between Third and Fourth avenues.

No one will miss it, said Eileen Chapman, a city resident who said
she has grown to resent the impression it creates. People would come
in and see that building and think nothing changed. Now we have an
opportunity to present Asbury Park as forward moving.

People chose their own way to bid farewell. Some

Punish Souter for Property Theft Decision -- Click Below to help see
that
Justice Is Served on Property Rights:
 http://capwiz.com/sicminc/issues/alert/?alertid=7771381type=CU

ALERT: Are you as OUTRAGED as I am about the Supreme Court's
recent
decision, allowing city governments to take land from one private
owner
and give it to another? In Kelo vs. City of New London, five
Justices
(led by David Souter) ruled that eminent domain allows any local
government to TAKE anyone's private property if the government will
generate greater tax revenue -- or any other economic benefits --
when
the land is developed by the new owner.

If you AREN'T outraged, then you're not paying attention!

These black-robed dictators have now virtually destroyed individual
property rights in the United States. Ignoring the U.S.
Constitution
AGAIN, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that local governments have the
right to seize private property to make way for private
commercial
 development such as shopping malls.

You read that right. It doesn't matter if your family has lived in
your
home since you were 11 years old -- if the local government
decides that
they could make more tax dollars by putting in a mall, too bad for
you
 and your family.

Even Justice Sandra Day O'Connor said in her dissent to the ruling,
Nothing is to prevent the State from replacing any Motel 6 with a
Ritz-Carlton, any home with a shopping mall, or any farm with a
factory.

But, the Supreme Court has spoken, so that's the end of it, right?
Nothing can be done to expose this ruling for the TRAVESTY it
really is,
 right?

WRONG. As a matter of fact, there IS something that can be done --
we can
take this ruling to its logical conclusion, and show Justice
Souter and
his ilk who are sitting there in their ivory towers, far removed
from us
common folk, just what their legal theories are doing to US.

So, in keeping with what has now been deemed constitutional, a
private
developer has contacted the local government in Supreme Court
Justice
David Souter's hometown in New Hampshire, asking that the property
of the
judge be seized to make room for a new hotel, to be named The Lost
 Liberty Hotel.

According to WorldNetDaily.com, Logan Darrow Clements faxed a
request to
the town of Weare, N.H., seeking to start the application process
to
build a hotel on 34 Cilley Hill Road, the present location of
Souter's
 home.

Wrote Clements: Although this property is owned by an individual,
David
 H. Souter, a recent Supreme Court decision, Kelo v. City of New
London,
clears the way for this land to be taken by the government of Weare
through eminent domain and given to my LLC for the purposes of
building a
hotel. The justification for such an eminent domain action is that
our
hotel will better serve the public interest as it will bring in
economic
development and higher tax revenue to Weare.

Ah, poetic justice is served. And YOU can help serve it to Justice
 Souter.

TAKE ACTION: This is not a prank. The town of Weare has five
people on
the Board of Selectmen. If three of them vote to use the power of
eminent
domain to take this land from Mr. Souter, Mr. Clements can begin
his
hotel development -- and we can begin the process of *reversing*
this
travesty of justice. He already plans to raise investment capital
from
wealthy pro-liberty investors and draw up architectural plans.
These
plans would then be used to raise additional capital for the
project.

FINALLY, these tyrants in black can face the music and actually
EXPERIENCE what they're putting the rest of us through! Click
below now
to send a message to all five members of the town of Weare's Board
of
Selectmen at once, asking them to see that Justice Is Served by
implementing Souter's decision and putting a hotel on HIS property:

 http://capwiz.com/sicminc/issues/alert/?alertid=7771381type=CU

NOTE: Yes, like Clements, we're aware of the apparent conflict of
someone who is strongly opposed to the Kelo decision using it to
purposely oust an American from his property. I realize there is a
contradiction, but we're only going to use it against people who
advocated the Kelo decision, Clements told WorldNet
Daily. Therefore,
it's a case of retaliation, not initiation.

Be sure to send this Alert to EVERYONE you know who wants to help
see
that Justice Is Served in this outrageous decision to destroy
private
 property rights! Thank you!

Considering the last minute charge (three days before the event), I
think the turn out was good.
Would it have been better as originally planned at the Convention
Hall area - No!

This event got off to a bad start with a last minute location change,
but it was still great. Parking downtown is always going to be a
problem in Asbury until the City and the City Manager finalizes the
parking garage with Stackman, whenever that will be.

Events like this should be held regularly to draw people to the
City. With the shops open, more can see what Asbury has to offer.

Considering Joe's comments: For your information Events that are
not retail oriented have no place in the retail corridor of the city
and Perhaps your non-retail event being held in the retail
corridor, on what would otherwise be a busy shopping day, will be the
exception., I take except to both comments.

Hopefully these are only your opinions and they are not the opinions
of the many who attended and of those who could see a future with
this event. A number of merchants indicated that they would support
this race being held AGAIN in the downtown area, but not on Sunday
morning. Even the race coordinators and participants enjoyed
the race event, and the location per their comments.

Perhaps, it could be on Saturday morning in conjunction with the
support of the Merchants Guild, the Chamber, and hopefully the City.
This race should continue downtown and the merchants and supports
should grow the event with advertising and coordination.

Thanks to the organizers and let's do it again.

Kerri... I posed a question not an indictment. There was no need
for your snarky I'll be sure to add you to the list... comment.

I'm assuming you mean Lake Avenue when you say Spring Wood Drive.

For your information Events that are not retail oriented have
no place in the retail corridor of the city. In the past when events
that are not retail oriented are held in the retail corridor, they do
nothing to help the retail businesses that are severely affected by
the street closures. Particularly when events such as the one you are
organizing virtually close down the entire downtown. Even when
retailers plan an event that closes down streets, they understand
that you can only close down a block or two of a single street. (i.e.
Taste of Asbury, Guinness Oyster Fest, etc) Never has there been an
event downtown that I can remember that simultaneously closes down
entire lengths of three or four major downtown streets. Perhaps your
non-retail event being held in the retail corridor, on what would
otherwise be a busy shopping day, will be the exception. Good luck.

Since you are cutting off all Cookman Avenue parking as well as the
Municipal and on-street parking on Lake Avenue, has your event
arranged for any special parking places for the hundreds of people
you are expecting?

have comments or you respond to an issue, and others don't like your
opinion, then they automatically make a Personal Attack upon you the
person on some basis, not your comments, or the validity of your
comments.

I agree with Jim Keady and Dan. All comments are welcomed and we
hope that all participation would make a better City. We have enough
issues and problems within the boundaries of this City to fuel many
collective improvements. Let's stop the Personal Attacks and start
working as a team or a number of teams to make a better environment
for all.

My name is Dan Sciannameo. This is not my forum and I don't post
here as if I thought it were. Unlike you, I do not tell people what
to post or if they should be posting unless registered to vote in
AP. All you did was point out a detail? What detail? That Gerry may
not be registered to vote in AP? So what? What does that have to do
with anything? You implied that his postings were meaningless
unless
he registered here. Perhaps, if he is not registered here he has 1
of those 1001 reasons you speak of.

Why do you find my remark ironic? You brought up the issue of
people
on forums and in letters to the editor making allegations about
city
actions. Questioning is something that does not appear to be
tolerated well here by city officials. That is a first hand
 impression of my own.

Yes, words are easier than actions. I have taken action and am
planning even more. I have already donated many professional hours
already to the issue of the Triangle to the city, hours that I
could
have billed to clients for $450/hour.

Read your original post again. Yes, you have the right to say what
you want here, but that doesn't make what you say right.

  Dear Nameless:
Everyone has a right to speak up - and if you knew me, you'd know
 I'm the
biggest advocate of people being able to speak up and speak
loud.

No one put me in charge, as you said. No more than anyone put
 Jerry in
charge. Or you. Is this not an open forum? Or is it your
 forum?

I, as Jerry is doing, am just stating my opinion - why does it
 bother you so?

I don't have any kind of a select view on who can speak out - all
 I'm asking
for is, ironically, what it seems everyone else is asking for:
 Honesty in
Asbury Park for a change. From everyone.

I LOVE political motivation - again, if you knew me, you'd know
 that to be
resoundingly true. And although I am not running for City
 Council, I have a
full right to expect that anyone else who is going to take a
 public forum in this
  town be

As someone who did have a dual residence, I COMPLETELY understand
 the complex
and often times difficult situation that presents. And there are
 a myriad of
reasons why one would not register to vote in AP. A thousand and
 one. Each
  valid. Each personal.

In closing, I find one of your comments to me highly ironic -
 Why
 are many
people in power in this city so afraid of a light being shined on
 the details?
If there is nothing to hide there should be no worry.

All I did was point out a detail. If there is nothing to hide,
 why the fuss?

Words are easy. Action is harder.
