Wow...good find. It pretty much says everything that needs to be said. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, dfsavgny [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Found this on the web regarding what some perceived to be a negative story about AP in the NYT. Sunday, December 07, 2003 8:05 PM RuthAnn, et al: I have read the article in question online, and found it to be balanced, factual and accurate in it's reporting. While I do not agree with everything that is stated in the article, I can certainly empathize with the fears and frustrations of those that were quoted in the article. I share some of those frustrations, and know that many others in town who did not have the opportunity to express themselves in print do as well. I support Asbury Park and am proud to live here and serve on the city UEZ Board, but I cannot look at life in Asbury through rose- colored glasses. We DO have an enormous crime and drug problem, that the city cannot seem to get the upper hand on. We DO have an enormous and apparant split between the haves and the have not's. We DO have, once again, what seem to be a lot of promises regarding redevelopment but nothing tangible that the average citizen can see, or touch, or proudly point out to their friends and take heart in. We have promised timetables for redevelopment that are not being adhered to; and in fact are being stretched to the point of ridiculousness. All of these points were very fairly presented in the NY Times article. Granted, some of the people interviewed for the article are the usual naysayers that we all must deal with in today's Asbury, and I understand fully that there are many behind-the-scenes technicalities that must first be addressed, but for just a moment, consider how all of this must appear to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Resident, who have no access to the negotiations going on and may still have a bad taste left in their mouths from previous efforts and promises gone bad. A point to consider: if the average resident or visitor could see progress being made, could see something, ANYTHING, happeningpeople would not have to wonder aloud about our city's future in the New York Times. What a /x-tad-bigger x-tad-bigger hypocrite!/x-tad-bigger The sad thing is that many of the town officials as well as people in the town (including on this board) think it's better for the town for nobody on the outside world to know about the crime. It's almost like they spend more time concealing the statistics than tackling the problems. It's kind of like the war in Iraq. Almost everyone agrees that it's going wrong but if you honestly try to talk about it and propose changes they call you unpatriotic and against the troops. In Asbury Park, they try to bury you if you discuss crime because they think you're against the cops. It's also sad that our excellent police force doesn't get the recognition they deserve. I think they do a great job. I've seen them in action quite a few times, and they're professional, courteous and easy to talk to. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Lightgrw [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Unbelievable. i think that Asbury could use a good 'ole publicity campaign to show some of the good things that are happening here...such as the police force, and the growth of Cookman. Sucks that we live in a world so full of negativity. Seems like the media only thinks we want to hear about that bad shit that happens in our world. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Lightgrw [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Nov 3, 2006, at 3:59 PM, Hinge wrote: It's also sad that our excellent police force doesn't get the recognition they deserve. I was not criticizing the police nor did I say they weren't doing their job. There are some problems that need to be discussed BECAUSE they are so big. Yet you just pointed out that they were doing their job and insinuated I suggested they weren't. That's the problem. You can talk about the problem without saying its the fault of the police but people just don't listen to what you're saying when you try.
