Lighty, There are three paths to consider at this point. The first being to trust the elected officials, join the bandwagon, sing along that it's better than it was and be a team player. Waiting to see how and if this all comes to fruition. The second is to accept that a deal was made and construction started but weed out all the missed commitments and non-performance, and hold the City and developer accountable for what the public was promised. The third is to challange the plan and redeveloper agreement as having violated the public trust in terms of process and mis- managing the best interests of the City. I think that a combination of 2 and 3 would be very effective to effectuate some positive changes in the direction of this redevelopment. The primary goal, as see it, would be to make some substantial zoning and land use changes in key areas to better use and diversify the economic potential that the beachfront offers for the entire City. Lighty, I'll try again to put this in perspective. This was not a plan developed by the people or City of Asbury Park. It was a contract negotiated behind closed doors at a bankruptcy settlement. A contract that violated the existing 1991 mixed use plan in place at the time. When the 'new' residential plan, based upon the contract was presented to the people, and the City wanted to change the deal, Fishman threatened litigation. Duany was brought in to sort things out, a few items were changed here and there but he testified that this was planning by contract. It remained a residential plan. The taxpayers desires were ignored, the planning boards recomendations were ignored, the Council testified that the felt they had to follow the MOU, and the few critics of the entire process were effectively black-listed. This was not a planning, public input, City driven, plan; it was a developer driven, negotiated behind closed doors, bankruptcy settlement, contract that violated the existing land use at that time. Over time it took on a ligitimacy of its own, because no one challanged it, and here we are today. Werner Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~-- Get fast access to your favorite Yahoo! Groups. Sure things are happening but they seem to be happening at a snail's pace and the damn skeleton building is still very much there as a symbol of continued failure. An earlier quote of mine on C8: Amid all the hoorahs, self-congratulations and spent tears at the groundbreaking October 14th was a revealing statement by Dean Geibel, the intended developer of C8 that the project would not be built till it was pre-sold. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Lighty [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Lighty, I'll try again to put this in perspective. I just can't believe that everybody in town and the people involved in the town (business owners, regulars, etc.) totally understand that tourism is an afterthought. I still remember being on Restore Radio after the publisher in town forgot to take his medicine and lashed out at me in print. Maureen asked if I wanted to discuss the article. I said the only thing I got out of the piece was it became very, very clear that the publisher was coming out AGAINST having Asbury Park be a tourist destination again. The problem is that I think the majority of people do not realize this is happening. I can see where someone with a family would be interested in having the town be more of a family town. But there are plenty of family towns in Monmouth County and there's only one Asbury Park. Only one town with the potential to be of interest to people around the world. Seems like most places play the cards they are dealt but Asbury's choosing to fold. Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~-- Get fast access to your favorite Yahoo! Groups. A conversation in 2040: Grandpa, why is the NJ Music Hall of Fame on Exit 116 of the Parkway? Well, Exit 116 is only 16 miles away from the Parkway Exit to Asbury Park, where Bruce Springsteen had his big break. And as a matter of fact, there are plenty of things to do on Exit 116. Why, you can visit the Vietnam Veteran Memorial, where your great grandpa gave his life for a meaningless war in the '60s. Lighty, don't give up the good fight. I'm actually involved with an organization looking to relocate the College Football Hall of Fame to New Brunswick from South Bend, IN. (Did you know, the first college football game was held in New Brunswick, between Rutgers Princeton?) The State wants to put it on a Turnpike Rest Stop. The committee has agreed that the CFHOF is better off starving in South Bend than thriving on Exit 8A. But, then again, some people are more concerned about how they can get ahead than what their grandkids would want when their grandparents are worm food. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Lighty [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: As a matter of fact, I'm willing to bet the next time any of us are in Atlanta, (which is 70 miles away, according to the show) if we ask 10 30-something locals on the streets where REM was discovered, at least 1 of them would be able to give us the best way to get to that unnamed bar in Athens. Actually the museum that we are looking at the closest for a model for the New Jersey Music Hall of Fame is the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. That museum has had tremendous success in building up the state's musical heritage to a larger audience. Of course, the way things are going with Asbury Park not wanting tourism, I guess we may be forced to look elsewhere for a home. It's a shame because Asbury Park shouldn't seek to be the next Bradley Beach - it should be seeking more. It has too much going for it to settle into the next little family town on the Jersey Shore... One more note of just how much success Belmar is having with their move to residential. The town council voted to have our parking meters run from May to the end of September. Why is this important? Because for decades those meters were ONLY used during the summer. The town is struggling to find ways to make up for lost tourist revenue... Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~-- Get fast access to your favorite Yahoo! Groups. Why, you can visit the Vietnam Veteran Memorial, where your great grandpa gave his life for a meaningless war in the '60s. Holmdel is actually a great example. I bet there are a TON of people who hate the fact that the Arts Center is located there; thereby giving their town an identity different from an upscale, quiet residential town. However, it produces revenue for the area. There are no plans to try setting up the Hall of Fame outside of Asbury Park, but you've gotta question the future if everybody seems so keen on having Asbury abandon its international outlook. I understand that the original plans were skewed towards residential, but it looked like they were also begrudgingly offering tourism for the area as well. Maybe I was dead wrong on that account. It sure seems like tourism has no place in Asbury's future plans right now. The funny thing is that there are plenty of people in City Hall who fight tooth and nail every week in an effort to bring Asbury back to its former prominence. I just can't understand why a town that has the chance to be something big would rather blend in with its neighbors as just another town. Maybe I'm missing something, but if I was Bradley Beach and I knew that there was an angle which would make tourism skyrocket in the town - I'd do it in a heartbeat. The town would gain revenues that just don't exist in residential areas - ESPECIALLY residential areas along the shore where at least half of the people abandon the town during the offseason, which just happens to be most of the year. People talk about the shopping mall aspect. We have a nice mall in Monmouth Mall just down the road, upscale shopping villages in Red Bank, Shrewsbury, Sea Girt; and another big mall in nearby Freehold. Why would a new shopping mall stand a chance when a place like the Seaview Square Mall couldn't handle the competition? Lighty, don't give up the good fight. As a die-hard RU football fan (yes, there are some of us here in Monmouth County who support the team) I would love to see it happen. I doubt the Fighting Irish alumni will make the process any easier for you. But maybe that's my problem - I'm an optimist. I believe RU will win another meaningful football game in my lifetime. And I believe Asbury Park can become the greatest tourist attraction in New Jersey and possibly the northeast. These things may seem far-fetched, but I'm also a die-hard NY Rangers fan... And we did win it all in '94. So dreams can come true. Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~-- Get fast access to your favorite Yahoo! Groups.
