You know what they say, "jack of all trades, master of none." Or as my
wife and daughters concede, a vast repository of useless information.

You are quite welcome. It was quite a turning point in my life to
recognize how insiduous anti-judaism is in Christianity (you have to
read Constantine's Sword by an ex-priest no less). It ALMOST made me
lose my faith. However, putting it into context, I have remained a
practicing Catholic, although because of many things, including being
in real estate, I consider myself an honorary Jew (no offense

Before Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was decapitated by his
Muslim abductors who videotaped the atrocity, he was compelled to say
with his last breath, "My mother is a Jew. My father is a Jew. I am a
Jew." Every Jew should embrace his or her identity with pride and vote
their conscience. I remain a Democrat, but have supported candidates
from other parties when my conscience so dictated. So let me now
proclaim, "My mother of revered memory was a Jew. My father of revered
memory was a Jew. I am a Jew."

In this case, proper use.

It's quite simple, really. "Jew" is a noun, "Jewish" is an adjective.
When "Jew" is used as an adjective, it is derogatory, e.g. Jew
couple, Jew nose, Jew businesses, etc.

Dan,

Thank you for the excellent response.

I think we had this discussion a while back. Heshy I think covered it
as well.

I do get annoyed to some extent when "jew" is used versus "jewish"-
and I'm not religious. I could here my grandmother saying the
word "Gentile". To me, it meant non-jew. (I can say that.)

Good job, Dan.

Technically it is not. However, the word Jew, used by a gentile has
more often than not been used in a derogatory (cheap jew, dirty jew,
etc.). Certainly it is quite alright to say someone is a Jew when
describing their religion, but my experience is that it has been
used (for two millenia) by goyum in a negative way. I always had a
reluctance to use the word Jew (to a Jew) till about 18 years ago
when an older friend of mine (who is a Jew) said that it was okay to
say Jew when not meant derogatory. But where do you draw the line?
Do you know how inbred anti-Judaism (the vestibule of anti-semitism)
is in Gentiles? It is so ingrained that most of us don't realize it.
Pick up and read a copy of James Carroll's Constantine's Sword. Its
an eye opener. So, it is quite different to ask someone are you a
Jew earnestly and another thing to write "Jew Couple" to identify
them on their check.

Certainly wasn't my intention to offend, JJ. Questions aren't always
hidden arguments; sometimes it is someone seeking to be taught
something, so they can better understand the world in the future.
Some might say that communication that leads to a better
underdstanding of each other will bring us closer together (crazy,
huh! Let's just stay polite and at a distance instead).

I guess the waitress never gets to learn why she was wrong.

Good question, and I'll try to give my interpretation.

When discussing religion, I'm Catholic and my wife & kids are
Jewish. (darn, I gave away the answer to the psychic waitresses). I
consider religious beliefs an adjective, not a noun. So I don't
consider myself A Catholic. (heck...neither do most Catholics).

I'd probably be offended if someone referred to my kids as "Jews",
but honestly religion rarely comes up in polite conversation.

Next time I'm with my in-laws & want to bring up a sore subject that
will offend all involved, I'll keep this one in mind.

Maybe you can answer this one; how can born-again Christians accuse

[AsburyPark] Re: from todays NY Post

2005-08-17 Thread bluebishop82
Maybe someone on the board can help me out with this. Serious
question and I'm trying to learn.

Why is it that to say "He is a Jew" is considered insensitive or
insulting, but to say "He is Jewish" is OK. I must say for other
religions it is the opposite. If someone said of me "He is a
Catholic" I'd be OK with that because I am. If someone said of me "He
is Catholic-ish" I might be insulted, like they are insinuating I'm
not really one.

I once heard someone on TV talk about this. It was either Robert Klein
or Ed Koch. They wanted to start a movement to get rid of the "Jewish"
word because he was proud to be called Jew.

Any thoughts to educate me on why the word Jew is derogatory but
Jewish is not?

I hope no one finds the very subject off limits. After all, I worship
a Jew (or should I say Jewish guy?).

Yeah, and there's NO racism in Monmouth County...okay!

On what grounds are they going to sue?
After the bartender wrote slut(or whatever) on your bill you go back
to the place?? Why don't you sue? Or don't you have grounds to sue?

It gets even better,

"We are a family restaurant, and we welcome everybody," she said,
adding that the words "Jew Couple" were never intended to be
derogatory.

"We use it as a form of identity," she said. She would not elaborate on
what the restaurant does when there is more than one couple assumed to
be Jewish at the restaurant.

I guess my check would say, short, bald italian guy. I always meant to
go in there to eat. This time I am wearing a yarmulke and "payess."
