[Assam] Gamosa and Politician

2015-07-31 Thread Ganesh C Bora
A week before I posted a mail in the net, expressing my happiness over use of
GAMOSA by politicians and other renowned persons. As everybody will agree with
me that Renowned word is subjective; a person may be renowned for me and may
be not for you!At that discussion, Mr. Lord Mani expressed his displeasure of
using photo and news item of RSS chief Mohan Bhagawat using the Gamosa saying
that they are communal.
And also he showed his dislike for the PM Mr. Modi as Modi follows RSS
principles.

About a year ago, I read a column in The Hindu newspaper, written by Ms.
Leena Sarma from Assam. I am sure many of you might have read the story. The
story will tell us about a fascinating facts. I can relate to the story,
because of my stay in Chhattisgarh and MP in the 80s for high school and
college education.

Lord Mani, I would disagree with you. I suppose you recognize him as the head
of RSS. If the head of RSS is becoming self volunteer of brand Ambassador of
Gamosa, I will take it as positive direction. Reality is that he is brand
Ambassador of Nationalistic India.

I do not know, how much you know about RSS; it is an cultural organization and
majority of the peoples representatives (more than 317 out 542) in Indian
Parliament adore RSS and are actively participate in their activities. I would
definitely consider RSS as nationalistic organization, unlike the congress
which has become a Private Inc. company of a family!

Hello,

Here are some videos on YouTube from the Assam 2008 celebration in King of
Prussia, Pa.
Our community members had great time at this event. But I think it
would have been better if we had a joint get-together. Many have lost
hope on this idea but some of us are still hoping that this will happen
one day, sooner than later.

Thanks

Enjoy the videos! Please select watch in high quality option if available.

Re: [Assam] [Assam Society] Boost to State technical education (The Assam Tribune, 02.05.2008)

2008-05-02 Thread Ganesh C Bora
It would be a great idea to establish a AIT center in Assam. The sattlelite
centers of AIT work well.
As an Alumni of AIT and worked Training Coordinator there till 2000, I can
definitely say that Assam can have plenty of exposure from AIT's training
programs with international donor funding.

Subject: [Assam Society] Boost to State technical education (The Assam
Tribune,02.05.2008)

Boost to State technical education
By A Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, May 1 – The technical education scene in Assam is all set to see a
major change with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok, expressing
its desire to establish a centre in the State. The AIT is also likely to
collaborate with the Assam Engineering College and Jorhat Engineering College
for introduction of new courses in the colleges. Official sources said that the
President of the AIT, Prof Said Irandoust along with faculty member Nitin Kumar
Tripathy today met Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi here to discuss the feasibility
of establishing a centre of the Institute in Assam. Sources said that during a
visit to Bangkok last year, the Chief Minister requested the AIT to establish a
centre in the state and the President of the Institute today said that the
first centre of the AIT in India is likely to be in Assam.

The AIT has already established its centres in the countries like Vietnam and
Indonesia, while, two more centres are coming up in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. As
Assam was the first state of India to formally request the AIT to establish its
Centre in India, the institute has decided to accept the request, sources said.
A memorandum of understanding is likely to be signed between the State
Government and the AIT soon to pave the way for opening of a centre of the
Institute in Assam.

Sources said that in the meeting with the Chief Minister, the president of the
AIT said that officers from different countries visit the Institute for
receiving training in water resources management, food processing, disaster
management, agriculture etc and if the Centre is opened in Assam, the officers
from different parts of India would be able to receive training in Assam
without going all the way to Bangkok.

The Chief Minister welcomed the decision of the AIT to establish a centre in
the state and assured that the Government would extend all possible help in
this regard. He said that as the AIT has been extending technical support to
water resource management of the Meckong river in Thailand, the institute
should try to extend technical help to Assam in controlling floods in the river
Brahmaputra. He also sought the technical assistance of the Institute in dry
food packaging and food processing.

Representatives of the Assam Engineering College and Jorhat Engineering College
also attended the meeting.

Later in a meeting with the representatives of the AIT, the State Government
asked the Bangkok institute to sent in a detailed concept paper to set up a
campus of the institute in the State. The Chief Minister has agreed to allot a
plot of land for the purpose, the AIT representatives were told. What is vital
for the State at this hour is the arresting of the exodus of its students to
outside institutions for technical education, said the State Government
representatives.

In the meeting, AIT was represented by its president Prof Said Irandoust and
its Indian Faculty Representative Nitin Kumar Tripathi, while Education
Minister Ripun Bora, Additional Chief Secretary Aloke Perti, Education
Commissioner Biren Dutta, Director, Higher Education Dr HK Sahu and Director,
Technical Education P K Goswami represented the State.

Prof Irandoust introduced the AIT and said that his institute has a traditional
relation with Assam with several of Assam students pursuing their studies in
the institute. The institute is eager to have collaborative venture with the
Assam Government in spreading technical education, he said.

Later speaking to this correspondent, Irandoust said that around 20 students
from Assam are now pursuing various courses in the AIT, Bangkok. There are
about 78 Indian students in the institute at present, he said.

The students from the State are doing well. While many of them are pursuing
management courses, some are doing infrastructure courses, he said, adding the
quality of the basic education they receive at the State’s technical colleges
like the Assam Engineering College, is good.

Additional Chief Secretary Alok Perti said that the AIT representatives
expressed their interest in collaborative works in the State. A branch of the
AIT will be a collaborative venture, they said. They were asked to give a
concept paper for the Assam campus of the AIT at the earliest.

The thrust areas of the State in such ventures were the areas of Information
and Communication

You are right. Keith Oberman did not highlight Bolin's talent (as singing

But if I am Bolin, I would still be happy to get a exposure like this! In

Bolin was in American TV! hah!

Hi Ganesh,

Thanks for forwarding the video.

I'm glad that Mr. Medhi has got some exposure because of this coverage in
MSNBC. Now, the mainstream Indian media will of course also cover it, and
hopefully Mr. Medhi benefits from it.

But Keith Obermann usualy has stories like this in his odd-ball section. It is
usually to make fun of odd news in different countries. He has several from
India - one with a truck going over a person (some competition), another of
actor Rajnikant giving a cigarette to a 5 year old, another of a guy with long
nails and so forth.

Basically, what I'm saying is that Keith O does NOT bring out these stories and
talents in the right spirit, but rather as a subject of ridicule.

I could be wrong, but thats the way I see it - with a grain of salt!

Re: [Assam] North East gets an IIM

2007-12-02 Thread Ganesh C Bora
Glad to know that the IIM is finally established in Shillong/NE. Interestingly
it is the first IIM named after somebody, i.e. Rajiv Gandhi. All other IIMs are
just known as IIM.
I tried to think for a long time what might be the special bondage between
Rajib Gandhi and Shillong/Meghalaya/NE??
Initially it came to mind, at some point when Rajib Gandhi was young in 1971,
he might have taken initiative of forming Meghalaya or he might have flew the
first plane to Shillong?? Nooo, I am wrong there! Then, I thought he might have
developed the state into a model state in the country??? Ney, I am wrong
again!!!
Does anybody know?? (there were many more former PMs of the country)

Have a nice week ahead

North East gets an IIM
Dec 1
The Union Human Resource Development Minister Mr. Arjun Singh laid the
foundation stone for the seventh Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in
Shillong today. The institute named after the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi,
will be the first IIM in the north-eastern region. It will start functioning
from next academic year from a temporary campus in Shillong city with 60
students for Post Graduate diploma in Business Management in the first year.
Subsequently, it will be expanded to 120 seats in the third year and 180 in the
sixth year. It will also provide specialized courses to meet the specific need
of the region. Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony, Mr. Arjan
Singh that north-east is on the march and the institute will help people
achieving a bright future.

Meghalaya Chief minister Dr. D.D.Lapang said that Centre’s thrust on
development in north-east and its ‘Look East policy’ has created lot of avenues
for private sector. He hoped that the new IIM will be required to fulfill the
much - needed management skills for the region.

Parliament consists of two units Lok Sabha (house of the people) and Rajya

remove partisanship but it is possible to remove some of the hardness due to
partisanship. There are issues where the nation comes above party politics and
the debaters need to be aware of these. The parliamentarians of the past that

Parliament withering away
— Poonam I Kaushish
We have been through all this before. Year after year. Of how India's
Parliament is increasing being devalued. Crores of tax payers hard earned money
being swept aside by the verbal torrent of puerile discourse that leads to
walkouts, even near fisticuffs. Wherein the very protectors of this high temple
of democracy have become its denigrators and destroyers.

Of how in their collective wisdom our MPs have been spewing sheer contempt on
Parliament, wittingly or unwittingly. Reducing it into an akhara, where
politically motivated bashing has become the order of the day and agenda a
luxury to be taken up when lung power is exhausted. Epitomising a cesspool of
every thing that has gone wrong with India today! Testimony to this sharp
decline was this year's shortest ever monsoon session of barely 17 days with
the longest daily adjournments and hardly any work, a mere 64 hours.

Shockingly, the session, originally scheduled from 10 August till 14 September,
was hurriedly cut short and adjourned sine die four days earlier. No, not
because of lack of agenda or legislative business. But due to the proceedings
being disrupted in both Houses on a daily basis thanks to the stand-off between
the Opposition and the Treasury benches on the Indo-US nuclear deal. The former
demanding a JPC on the contentious subject and the latter adamantly declining.

With the result that Parliament further lost credibility and prestige. Leading
a much anguished Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee to State in his
concluding remarks: It is extremely disturbing that the highest public forum
in the country has come to a standstill which has raised questions about the
utility of our system of Parliamentary democracy and about its future. Raising
a moot point: Is Parliament becoming irrelevant?

That we are slowly but surely heading towards disaster is obvious. What
troubles one is the new dimension to this age-old malaise. That it does not
strike a chord among our MPs. Who largely continue to drift along smugly
without thinking of what they have done to Parliament. Of how they have mauled
it and continue to do so. Most distressing is that there is no sense of outrage
or shame.

The legislative business transacted during the session illustrates how
powerless parliament has become in stemming the mounting rot. Let's start
with the Question Hour, the hyphen which links Parliament to Government and
ensures ministerial accountability. Distressingly out of the 380 starred
questions listed, only 35 could be answered. Thus, on an average about 2.05
question were answered per day. Why? The MPs were too busy – rushing into the
well of the House, raising slogans and preventing transaction of any business.

Mindlessly, ignoring

Webster University started with professional development courses with its first
campus in a beach town named Hua-Hin about 2 hrs south of Bangkok. In fact I
met some of the faculties (mostly Europeans) when I was working in AIT,
Bangkok. They later on started Under-grad and graduate courses mainly in
management and computer related areas (market hot areas).
In Thailand there is a craze for foreign education (if not possible, then,
education by foreigners manily by whites). That is the sentiment capitalized by
these universities (there are other similar universities, namely Stamford
University) in Thailand. Webster charges very high tuition fee (about 6 to 7
times higher than the local universities). One can know more about this

By Our Correspondent
GUWAHATI, Sept 24 – With an aim to expose students of the North East India to
job-oriented education system of America, reputed America based institute
Webster University has launched its maiden awareness programme throughout
select schools of the region.

The institute, which also has its campus in Thailand, is coming up with plans
to help meritorious students from the region, preferably those under below
poverty line (BPL) with financial aid to enable them to study in the
Thailand-based campus of Webster University.

In an exclusive interview with The Assam tribune, Sanjib Subba, executive
director, Webster University informed that the institute has made an appeal to
all the students to avail this opportunity by means of which they can fulfil
their dream of studying abroad, that too in a prestigious institute like
Webster University.

I don't think any foreign institute has ever come up with any offer which
talks about giving financial aid to meritorious students, especially in the
North East India, Subba said.

Any student from any part of the NE region can apply for this financial aid
through the city wing of Global Reach, which is India's largest overseas
education consultant company is associated with over than 200 institutes across
the globe, he informed.

I have found that most of the prestigious names in the world education system
including the likes of Howard University looks for student from metros only and
region like NE India do not fall under their scheme of things. That is why we
have chosen NE because we know that talent is abundant here and the only
hindrance is money, reiterated Subba.

Webster University is not a profit-making institute. Instead, we look for
reinvesting the money we generate from the institute in infrastructure
building, he said.

Of course, there would be some criteria which one would have to fulfil before
getting the nod from the university. But, what is most impressive about the
offer is that we have not restricted the number of students who can avail this
offer. It can be one or even 10, Subba added.

Subba, who was here in the city for over a week now, visited a good number of
schools across the region and deliberated upon the nuances of studying under
American education system.

We want students from the NE to get acquainted with the American education
system and explore the world from a different perspective, Subba added.

Unlike the English education system, American education system believes in
grading the students at different phases and not merely by annual examination

It is always good to have statistics, hard data. In this case, the information
about change in demography of Assam can be found in Census of India
http://www.censusindia.net/ and with RTI, one can also get previous years data.
Election Commission can provide information about change of demography among
voters (which more or less goes the same way as the population). The facts can
be also gauged by the election results of Assam Assembly.

Now the question is: has the demography of Assam changed? For this answer, one
should not hide behind statistics/hard data. And there is no mark for guessing
the correct answer! People living in Assam knows it well.

statistics collected by a reliable source-and if it is by a govt agency then
all the better, definitely has its own relevance.Again while stating that some
districts are bengali-dominated or muslim dominated by itself does not become
relevant unless it can be shown that this was not the position say 10-20 years
back, that such demographic change,if any,is because of migration from another
country and so on. Any arguement to be meaningful has to be backed by hard
facts and there will always be those who will doubt/question the veracity of
any such claim. The time has come for setting aside emotions alone and taking a
hard look at all available facts and data and
conclusively prove that illegal migration is a major, major problem for the
state/country and does not affect the assamese speaking population alone-the
revealations in the hyderabad blasts is perhaps a pointer towards things to
come.Problem is-who will bell the cat!

This is a good point!

However the question is, what would you do even if there were such an official
statistic. Statistics say many districts/subdivisi ons in Assam are now Muslim
majority and predominantly Bengali speaking (eg. hojai, dhubri, karimganj etc.)
- but that is hotly contested by many of our own Assamnet members from this

Its important to have authentic statistical information on such vital issues if

Dear Netters

This episode is conveyed to me by a personal friend.

Shri Mukut Medhi WAS the GS of Assam Olympic Association (I reteirate WAS). He
was one of the main architects of getting the games to Assam and its subsequent
planning for the last few years. But due the threats he seemed to have received
from the TERRORISTS (viz. ULFA) not only for him but his entire family, he gave
some statements asking for postponement of games and proper security to his
family. The Govt od Assam ( or ASOM as they call them nowadays) took it
differently and stripped him of the GS portfolio just days ahead of the games.
Not even an invitation for the opening ceremony was sent to him. The poor
ARCHITECT of the games couldn't bear it and had an heart attack and is
inserious condition in ICU of a Guwahati Hospital.
Shame! Shame!! Shame!!!
 Long Live ASOM.

I guess, the time is over for blame game. We need to

 migration of Muslims mainly
from the Sylhet and Mymensingh districts of
 erstwhile East Bengal took place
mainly to the Central Assam districts. However, due
 to the tough stand taken
by Gopinath Bordoloi, Assam remained with India at
 the time of Partition.
However, the plan was not abandoned and after
 Independence an unabated
influx continued with the support of certain
 political parties who used
these illegal migrants as vote-banks. These early
 illegal migrants from
East-Pakistan identified themselves as Assamese at
 the time of the census
and continued to increase their population in the
 decades that followed.

The indigenous people of Assam did not understand
 the political motive
 behind such large-scale trans-migration of
 population nor the implications
of their multiplying numbers once settled there. By
 the time a conscious
section of the Assamese became aware of the changing
 demographic pattern and
its inherent dangers, it was rather late. As by then
 six districts of Assam
had a Muslim majority and in 10 districts they had a
 significant presence.

While Assam's population increased by 52.44 per cent
 from 1971 to 1994 the
number of voters increased by 95 per cent during the
 same period. In actual
numbers the increase was from 62,96,000 voters in
 1972 to 1,23,00,000 voters
in 1994. An abnormal increase of 60 lakh voters.
 Translated into electoral
politics out of 126 Assembly and 14 Parliamentary
 seats they were the
deciding factor in 68 Assembly and eight
 Parliamentary seats, respectively.
This large body of foreigners on the electoral rolls
 of Assam poses a real
threat to the genuine citizens as they now have the
 strength to decide the
 fate of governments in Assam.

With Islamic terrorism spreading its tentacles
 globally the dangers of such
a huge illegal influx cannot be under-estimated or
 ignored. In 1979,
realising the dangers of this illegal infiltration

Terrorism is always bad. Did you not notice MINORITY
terrorism during more than 5 decades of Congress rule.
Definitely that led to the birth of majority
terrorism. Moreover majority terrorism is lesser devil
than minority terrorism.

 February 11, 12, 13, 2006: likely the most crowded
 days the Dangs
will ever see. Yet, if faith is to be served, if
 pilgrims are to find
spiritual fulfillment in the gentle waters of
 man-made Pampasarovar -
why the things you hear about the event? An RSS
 activist at the mela
office, Mahesh Daga said, The main objective is to
 put a full stop
 to conversion of tribals.

   The Kumbh mela's website, shabarikumbh.org, has a
 section, 'About

 Aseemananda, one
of the moving spirits behind the mela, told
 Christians here, I have
come here to drive away those who have come here to

What does such hostility have to do with a tender
 story from a great
epic? 'About Kumbh' has more of interest.
 Organising a Kumbh in a
remote, heavily forested area is a nightmare, it
 says. The 352
villages in Dang district had no electricity or
 roads ... There are
no medical facilities or eateries in the vicinity.
 ... Realizing the
importance of (the Kumbh) the state government of
 Shri Narendra Modi
has extended full cooperation (and) has undertaken
 construction of
roads on a war footing. All the 352 villages of Dang
 have got
 electrification.

Good. But consider: if the state government has
 done so much since
the idea for the Kumbh, why was the Dangs deprived
 before? After all,
Modi has been in power for several years. Why did it
 need a Kumbh for
his government to bring electricity here, to
 construct roads on a
 war footing?

The irony goes deeper. We drove between the
 Navsari border and Ahwa
one night, between Pampasarovar and Ahwa the next
 night. If you
discount Ahwa, the number of electric lights we saw
 could be numbered
on two hands. Oh, but plenty of village homes were

Long time ago, in one evening adda we discussed this
point and ‘humorously’ concluded that West Bengal’s
underdevelopment is because of two points:
1) Allegiance to LAL SALAM
2) Adherence to RABINDRA SANGEET

Rabindra Sangeet did encourage them to cross the
sphere and even if they tried, the Lal baton stopped
them!

(May be there is truth in it!!!)

On the other hand, the British went to West Bengal

Is there a traditional explanation of this puzzling
