[Assam] law against those using illegal migrants for political benefit
Guwahati, Monday, July 25, 2005 LETTERS IM(DT) repealSir,– It is really a matter of shame on the part of all political parties that the IM(DT) Act declared illegal by the Supreme Court was in force in Assam for more than two decades. The matter is also dangerous as far as the security of the nation is concerned. The verdict is definitely a relief for all patriotic people. It also gives indirect relief to all political parties that they are at least freed from the blame of retaining or repealling the Act. Now is not the time for enacting another Act equivalent to IM(DT) but an Act that will invite drastic action for a person who helps illegal migrants directly or indirectly. Political parties should not play with security of the country. Can we call the former Movement leaders presently acting as active and powerful leaders of different political parties (both national as well as regional) to devote their potential to solve a issue raised by themselves once ? Hats off to Sarbananda Sonowal, MP for his silent but dedicated effort in repealing the illegal Act with the only available legal option. – Yours etc., DIPAK KUMAR SARMA, Ujan Bazar, Guwahati. -- ___ Assam mailing list Assam@pikespeak.uccs.edu http://pikespeak.uccs.edu/mailman/listinfo/assam Mailing list FAQ: http://pikespeak.uccs.edu/assam/assam-faq.html To unsubscribe or change options: http://pikespeak.uccs.edu/mailman/options/assam

its like .. a showcase of various kind of sweets in sweet shops.. there is a basic system to east one of those delicious sweets.. enter teh shop, select, order (in case of bigger restaurants) or pay in advance in case of smaller sweet shops.. ~~~ someone can't just break in and have them! On 5/24/05, Amlan Saha [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I am not an expert on such matters, but I have read a number of articles and books on this topic, the prominent among them being defending pornography by Susan (can't remember her last name; she teaches at havard law school), which shows and cites a number of statistical studies that have found a clear correlation between the ease of availability of pornography in a society and crimes against women. In general, the more easily available they are in a society, the safer women are in it. The two countries that are considered the most liberal on pornography - Denmark and Japan - had the lowest recorded crimes against women in their societies. The book also talks about the ease of mingling of men and women, rather boys and girls, or the lack thereof, as one of the primary reasons behind rapes and in general crimes against women in a society. All this talk of dressing provocatively is pure bollocks! We all know how deprived the general Indian man is given the society in India. I do not think there is any point in reprimanding the men who commit such crimes - we are only treating the symptoms then. Many more will pop up in no time. We probably need to look at the Indian society and its so-called morals, whatever they mean, if we really want to solve these problems. -Amlan. --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: - KPS Gill's remark on rape does not make any sense.A woman may dress to kill or put on a provocative attire but that does not grant a man to have carnal knowledge by force of a woman.Women neither secretly want to be raped, nor do they expect, encourage,or enjoy rape. Many rapes are planned, but often the victim is simply an available individual, sometime even an older woman. The VICTIM IS NOT ALWAYS SEXUALLY ATTRACTIVE.Rape represents an expression of anger, power and sexuality on the part of the rapist. The rapist is usually a hostile, compulsive man,who uses sexual act to terrorize and humiliate a woman. [Assam] 700 km long energy highway in Assam
NEW DELHI: The 20-year-old rape victim and her friend, both from northeastern state, are students of correspondence courses and stay in a rented accommodation in nearby Satya Niketan. They use to study at night and were strolling towards the Dhaula Kuan bus stop around 2 am, taking a break from their books, DCP (southwest) Dependra Pathak said. They were on the footpath near Atmaram Sanatan Dharam College gate when a grey Santro car with tinted glasses crossed them. The assailants noticed the girls walking down the road, and came back a second time. This time they stopped the car, two persons came out and tried to force the girls into the car. The girls resisted but they managed to drag the victim in. The victim's friend, who is strongly built, got away and in the panic, registered only part of the car's registration number which started with HR26. She immediately started screaming and ran towards the petrol pump at Dhaula Kuan. It must be around 2.15 am when this girl came running towards my dhaba. She was screaming for help as her friend had been abducted. A PCR van was coming from the other side and she informed them of what had happened, said Rajiv, who owns a dhaba near the pump. The victim said she was forced to drink something after being pushed into the car which partly sedated her. She also said she remembers the faces of the men, a police official said. After having dragged the victim into the car, the assailants drove through central and trans-Yamuna areas before throwing her out at Nanakpura at around 4.15 am not too far from the spot of abduction. This was quite an audacious act given that which can be transported in containers for delivery near the market either in bulk or by retailing system. The northeast has a proved gas reserve of 47.787 billion cubic metres out of India's total 79.610 billion cubic metres of natural gas. Assam currently produces about five million cubic metres of natural gas annually. The potential is tremendous, with more and more industries willing to use natural gas. Very soon we are starting a Rs.40 billion project to supply natural gas through pipelines to the Numaligarh oil refinery in Assam, Baruah said. He said once the energy highway is completed, the scope for small and medium-sized industrial units in the state would be huge. In India, oil and gas were first discovered in 1867 from a non-commercial well in Assam. But it was only in 1889 that the well was proved commercially viable, going on stream in 1901. Natural gas is becoming the fuel of the future, Baruah said. [Assam] Quest for Peace
The Times of India Online Printed from timesofindia.indiatimes.com Interview Assamese novelist Indira Goswami's is a case of sentiments about insurgents and insurgency pushing literary limits to touch the fringes of hard-headed politics. But she hotly denies being in politics or even in sympathy with the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA). She condemns the violence attributed to the outfit, but says that their sufferings are genuine. Goswami tells Mahendra Ved that their demand for sovereignty for Assam is impractical and that they should settle for autonomy. You met the prime minister with an appeal that is political. Do you agree with the ULFA's cause? I am a writer who has done nothing but write all my life. I am not a politician and will never join politics, although I have had many offers. I do not think I will be accepted as a politician by people who have a certain image of me. But I am non-political, not apolitical. A writer must understand politics to be able to evolve. My entire effort to meet the PM is to bring peace to Assam. I have not met any of the top ULFA leaders, only talked to some of them on phone. But insurgency is a recurring theme in your writings. Yes, many characters in my novels are concerned with insurgency as heroes, as villains, or as mere victims of circumstances. My younger brother Manabendra Sarma was killed by insurgents. I was bitter about it for long, but then got over it. I visited the village homes of Paresh Barua and Anup Chetia on way to a literary conference some years ago. Barua's mother wept and urged that I bring her son back. She lost the younger son to terrorism and has not met Paresh for 25 years. I asked Rajkhowa's 101-year-old father, a freedom fighter: Do you admire your son? He said the demands were genuine. But I do not want an independent Assam. I want him to give up the gun and let peace return. Have you had a brush with insurgents? Is talking to Barua telephoning from a location you do not know part of a writer's brush with reality? Well, I have not bothered to know where he calls from. Since I want to be of some help, and leave it at that. I once did accompany insurgents to their camps and saw for myself how they live and work, while being chased by the army and the police. Although conscious that I am a known name and face, I allowed myself into that situation, more out of empathy than a sense of adventure. Or, may be, a bit of both. They were momentous few hours in the middle of the night. They could have done anything to me. Maybe, take me a hostage. But I knew they respected me and would do nothing to harm me. They showed me that they also did some good work, like running small schools and nursing the sick while being on the run. A year later, one of them wrote to me from jail, his foot amputated, saying that he was the sole survivor from that group and all the others had been killed. I have drawn from these lives I have studied. My novel that got me the Sahitya Akademi award, Mamore Dhada Torwal (Rusted Sword), is about these fighters. But as I said, I do not necessarily share their acts of violence and their belief in independence. Why? Is an independent Assam unviable? How can you think of an independent Assam. As a writer, I would say that it is a beautiful dream. But as a person, I know it will never materialise. There are too many ethnic differences. There are the borders with China, Bangladesh and Myanmar. The US too has a role in the region. You may go on fighting for year, but there will be no independence; Assam will become a skeleton. It is not like Bhutan or Sikkim, it is rich in natural resources, the wood, tea and oil that are coveted by too many. Hence, I am all for greater autonomy, not independence. See the neglect. See the state of Majuli, the world's largest island on a river. I think money is not a problem, the poli-tical and economic management is. This has led to corruption. Don't forget, the Assam I was born in is what is much of the north-east today. I would like that Assam of my childhood to be peaceful and prosperous. So you do not agree with the ULFA's demand for sovereignty. I have not pondered over it. It is a French word with so many different meanings. I am not sitting on value judgment. I see insurgency and the misery it has caused and want that to end. Hence I met the prime minister. I was moved by his response and I believe in him. I do not think any harm will be done by talking on the subject. I told Barua of the apprehensions about this. But he is stubborn. Maybe, he needs this to keep his flock together. Do you think they will come for talks? He (Barua) has told me that they are coming. Now it is up to the government. Once letter goes from the government, they will come. They are laying no pre-conditions. You must have seen that Barua is no longer talking of a meeting in a third country and under

. But a positive route is possible -- this is what I want to show. I must emphasise -- this is a form of penance; it requires sacrifices, dedication and total involvement. Only then is success possible in one's chosen field. But it is possible. It is not as if there are no problems -- there are people who still look upon me as a spectacle, a weird oddity. Sometimes people look at me like they expect to see five hands and six legs. When we applied for a passport, and were forthright about our gender, they labelled us a 'U'. A scheduled foreign performance had to be cancelled because they wouldn't clear the visa for someone who was not classified 'M' or 'F'. I was shaken to the core. I surrendered my passport and told them they might as well keep it -- it had no use for me. If they couldn't push me up, at least they need not have pushed me down. One kindly officer took up our case and the ministry of external affairs issued us a passport last year that calls us female. That was another first. Now, there are many more who come to my performances and see me as an artiste. This time, in the Chennai December Music Season, in spite of having no godfather-like figures, I was invited to perform at the leading sabhas -- Krishna Gana Sabha, Narada Gana Sabha and the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. I have been awarded a fellowship by the Government of India. I am immensely proud of this. It vindicates our faith in ourselves. Today, even though I struggle without mentors or sponsors, in my heart I am a koteeshwari (crorepati) I am asked in interviews what I would have been if not a dancer. Typically, people say doctor or teacher or painter or something like that. I would have to say, if not this I would have been a prostitute in Mumbai or Delhi. It shocks people but it is the truth. I am a good human being. I dance to my conscience. I sleep well at night. My parents were not cursed. This is a natural instinct. We only want affection and acceptance from society. Today, we are totally independent. Even the dust on the soles of my slippers I have earned myself, with honesty and hard work. Narthaki is the name given to me by my guru. Natraj was what I was named when I was born. Narthaki is someone who always dances. What a coincidence that my given name should be that of the Lord of Dance (Nataraja, the dancing Shiva at Chidambaram). We are unparalleled. I call myself Thirunangai -- Supreme Woman. See how the world is -- everywhere there are women who wish they hadn't been born so, at some point or the other. Gender discrimination in various forms makes femininity something that is not preferred. We, on the other hand, have proudly chosen it. I may not be beautiful enough, nor have the required form and figure in the correct proportions, but I am a woman. I will not bother to reply if someone refers to me as 'he'. I am not a cross-dresser, I am not a homosexual. When people ask us if we are this or that, they dig a wound that can never heal; a wound that they have caused. I don't need pity but compassion. I don't ask for special treatment but I need support.
