Re: [Asterisk-Users] CDR Web Search Frontend

2003-09-25 Thread Jamie Carl
Ok, wow. Didn't expect as many responses as I got.
Didn't think this would spark so much interest.

Anywayz. Some of the questions asked will be answered
here, rather than emailing everyone individually with the
same answers.

Currently, the backend is written in Python2 with the
MySQLdb module. However, due to some interest I will be
porting it to PHP.

Also, if you want to see it in action, you can look at
http://asterisk.jazz-inc.net to see my working (but still
under development) version.

I am going to put links on this page to packaged source
for free download. Just have to sort out disclaimers and
all that so you all cant sue me. :)

Thanx guyz,

J

So far you can seach using source, destination, CLI,

The interface is quite nice... It would be nice to see it integrated
with the web configuration interface.

Looks great. One suggestion would be to add a total at the end with
total/billable durations and total number of calls.

Since * and MySQL have had a licensing scuffle, is there a way to set it

use the plaintext file that * generates with cdr_csv.so?

2003-09-27 Thread WipeOut
Here is a slightly modified version..

Use it, don't use it.. I don't mind I just changed some stuff to my
preference..

Changed:
1) DB parameters are near the top of the file..
2) External CSS no longer required, Everything is now in one file.
3) CSS now also used on Query form.
4) Added FormatTime function so call time totals now show like this :-
Total Call Seconds: *18295 ( 5h 4m 55s )*
Total Billable Seconds: *16474 ( 4h 34m 34s )
*Thanks for the utility Jamie..

Later..

Or do something really smart like the Perl guys and have a
backend-mostly-independent DB infrastructure. Hell I think that PHP
finally smartened up and went this way, too.

You wanted suggestions, didn't you? Well, you got them! :P

Also another major search function...

Allow to search via account code, for accounting purposes (obviously).

Re: [Asterisk-Users] CDR Web Search Frontend

2003-09-28 Thread Garry Adkins
Java has the best solution to this As long as the schema stays the same
(and you don't use vendor-specific sql stuff) you can change databases by
simply using a different database URL.

It's literally that easy... We've been moving some java reports from our
AS/400 to an oracle database server, and you change one configuration line
and bingo!

Hi Guys

I am happy to do this and send the code back. Database independence
isn't to hard to achieve. It would be nice if a group of us could get
together and discuss how we can make this great app even better and
possibly look at getting a small team together to merge this and
phpconfig into a single application. Will possible access to cvs for the
developers.

Thoughts?

Mark,

The Digium CVS is pretty much a closed book but there is nothing
stopping the creation of a repository on Sourceforge to develop the
interface further..

Good idea to tie the CDR and PHPconfig utils together.. :)

My thought are, go with sourceforge. Mainly cause I already have an

so I'm sure it's the first place others look for stuff too.

2003-09-29 Thread Troy Settle

After reading this thread, I wonder if we couldn't create an abstract
RDBMS interface in the core, then in the addons repository, create
modules for MySQL, MSQL, MSSQL, Oracle, Sybase, PGSQL, or whatever. The
abstraction layer would simply use whichever addon module it was
configured to use. This would eliminate the licensing issues Digium may
have when granting a non-GPL license to a 3rd party, while allowing
creating a very flexible product.

Additional functionality could be added with some simple hooks in the
core. For example, if you want your configurations to come directly
from a SQL database in real time, add hooks into the code to cause * to
read from the abstraction layer instead of it's internal database. It
would be simple enough to do, and as a build-time and/or run-time
configuration option, I believe it can be done without causing issues to
the stability of the core.

Another example is CDR, which would do what it does now by writing a
csv, but could have a hook added to it to also send accounting data to a
SQL server or even a Radius accounting server or something else
entirely.

To do this right would probably force a major architectural change to *,
which I'm sure that Mark would be reluctant to do, but if someone could
build the framework, get some folks to test it (in small, medium, and
large deployments), I'll bet Mark will accept it.

Also, with the advent of the addons repository, has anyone asked Mark if
he would be willing to grant commit privileges to more people? It
doesn't make much sense to create a new repository for this when Digium
already has the facilities available and a new repository for non-core
items.

BTW, I'm not a coder, I'm just an idea man.

Hi All

I am happy to go with SF. Jamie do you want to apply for an account

What I was thinking for the DB layer is the following

We have a main class which contains a basic DB implementation. We then
create subclasses which extend the main class for each DB we want
supported.

This code would be released under the GPL getting rid of any licencing
issues that might arise.

Thoughts?

I am happy to get a basic DB abstraction layer ready for people to look
at if its agreed this is a goer.

Maybe I am missing something here..

Why is DB abstraction needed??

As far as I am aware the CDR logging can only log to MySQL or CSV text
file..

Also does anyone know how this issue with Asterisk and MySQL is going to
affect things like the MySQL CDR logging?

MySQL CDR logging is incompatible with OpenH323 basically. You now have
an asterisk-addons where you can find cdr_mysql now. Someone is sending
cdr_pgsql and I hope to have it merged by the end of the day for people
who are not too closely tied to MySQL.

Personally, I *love* MySQL, and I'm a bit surprised by their sudden change
from public domain (and maybe LGPL) to GPL for their client libraries...

So if we don't use OpenH323 are we OK with MySQL? Do we just edit the
Makefile to allow it to use MySQL then?

I doubt if you'll be able to. They made a strategic decision to GPL
rather than LGPL their client access libraries, as they wanted to up
their proprietary license revenue. Essentially, they're trying to
enhance the benefits of paying for a commercial license fee, by making
it difficult to use MySQL in non-GPL products without said license.

Unfortunately the CSV Logger is not that reliable. I have found times when it

I have found the CDR in general to be a problem, We use a system that
allows a user to simply click a phone number in a web page and then PHP
drops a call file into the /outgoing directory.. These calls are not
logged at all.. not in the text file or the MySQL..

Maybe one day this will work.. :)

I am happy to do this and send the code back. Database independence
isn't to hard to achieve. It would be nice if a group of us could get
together and discuss how we can make this great app even better and
possibly look at getting a small team together to merge this and

All registered with Sourceforge. The new project will be
called 'AstWeb' and will be available under the GNU
General Public Licence. The current release of AstCDR
will be ported over in the next day or so along with the
addition of a few features and labelled 'AstWeb v0.4'.

The project is currently pending approval with SF.net and
once approved will be available for download from the
SF.net website.

Thanx all,

If so, tell me, and we'll make this an official project

So it sounds like we need to combine everyones thoughts into a feature
list of some sort..

To me it sounds like we have talked about the following..

* PHP based
* Database Independent (Initially MySQL and PGSQL)
* CDR Viewing (real time view of last 20 (filterable by
src/dst/accountcode etc..) CDR entries)
* CDR Reporting (per user/company/line, Somthing like the itemised
billing from a telco, User Accessable)
* Asterisk Management (initially based on PHPconfig)
* User Self Service (Ability to change VM password, Maybe even SIP
password, Advanded features in the future could be things like call
forwarding setup or a facility where the user could sit down in front of
any phone and "map" his extension to the phone on the desk in front of
him like hot desks in an office)

Feel free to add you ideas..

Thats COOL!!!. :)

Is GPL the correct licence for it??

I am not so hot on all that licencing stuff and all I hear is that
licence X is not compatible with licence Y and so this code needs to
removed and yada-yada-yada blah-blah-blah..

Would it not be better to use LGPL (which I believe is less restrictive)
or X11/MIT Licence which has very few limitations as I see it..

I think GPL is the right licence, as long as people keep the code open
and share you rarely get licencing issues. In my experience it's the
ones who want to take it and then keep the changes hidden that cause the
problems and IMHO these people are in it for the money and not for the

Sounds good. Would you want to extend it any, using place names etc? So
calls to +1604xxx show up as "Canada" or "BC, Canada" (or even "Vancouver
BC, Canada") or am I just being a bit too ambitious (and annoying) there?

Can you elaborate on this a bit? Do you mean holding all the config
parameters in databases which are either accessed natively or used to
generate text config files (as many web hosting control panels do)? Or do
you just mean including the existing web config stuff in to the bigger grand
scheme, more or less as-is?

I like the ideas of user self service.. or user filtered access to the CDR
stuff?

Will there/should there be levels of user access and stuff to restrict
access to certain areas?

Big can of worms we're opening, but I'm up for some PHP coding, I have spare
cycles right now.. and with a snazzy front end, it's more value to

GPL should be sufficient. I went over it during my lunch
break. Seems like the users have more rights than the
Authors. :) Basically what it comes down to is that
anyone can use/modify it in any way, as long as they
release it GPL as well. I found it to be quite lax on
restrictions for use/distribution to be honest.

It also means that if it's modified, I can't be blamed for
anything, which is all I'm worried about. Given that it
is a separate entity to Asterisk, it should not use LGPL
as it is not a library.

I was just thinking in terms of the whole issue between Asterisk and
MySQL right now.. They are both GPL but for some reason they are not

Yes, user access restrictions are in mind. Don't know how

The problem with this is that its a major problem mapping area codes of

told that landline and cell phone networks use the same codes.. ) I have
mapped some countries for my dialplan but its not easy.. also US and

Definately!!, probably need Admin (full system access and account

Yup, it's true - I know so cos I'm in Canada :-) (and coming from the UK,
don't even get me started on the state of the North American phone system -
we see enough flame wars and off topic threads on here already!)

Yeah, the USA, Canada and a bunch of Caribbean places are covered by NANPA,
the North American Numbering Plan.

I think I'm only interested as far as area code, I'm not too fussed about
whether it's a mobile number or not, although I guess it's more of an issue
for dialling other destinations where calling a mobile is charged at a
premium. For example, call a UK land line and you know it's +44 1xxx or +44
2xxx with all mobiles starting +44 7xxx. Calling UK mobiles from North
America typically costs more than calling a land line.. reciprocal
compensation etc kicks in.. Not so the other way round though - people back
home can call me on my landline or my mobile for the same "Calling North
America" rate across the board.

 a. regulatory/legal restrictions (in US, some call detail can only be

I'd also bet some money the recently passed US Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA)

Do you want everyone to know where everyone is calling? I could see mgmt/owners having
an issue with this in a normal business environment! Look Mr. Gate$ at extention 666
made 500 calls to Mr Devil last week, I wonder what deals they are making ;)

Doesn't this just display the config files for editing? I wouldn't want to put this as
an internet reachable service without https. Heck if I'm just editing a file, why not
just vi/vim/emacs/your-fav-editor from an ssh session ( lots of java ssh applets for
this/ ssh clients )?

User Self Service would seem to mean replacing the PHPconfig anyway...

Make sure to think about limits for call forwarding. Should I be able to forward to a
number in some other country?

Authentication/Authorization is a tough slippery slope... LDAP, NIS, NIS+, flatfile,
database you get the picture.

You may want to think about Webadmin as a control frontend and build with that in
mind...

Maybe CDR exports from the GUI (csv)?
In GUI Archiving mechanism for "old" records? ( record retention policy )

This would have to be controled by that particular company's policy.. at
least the facility will be there..

Yes it does just display the conf files but it is far simpler (and
usually easier) to simply open a web broswer (authenticate) and edit the
files.. Access security will have to be built but network security is
again the choice of the admin.. if its only used on a LAN and his users
are not to awake then plain text is fine.. :)

I don't think so, could be built as a subset of the PHPconfig functions..

I would assume based on the nature of the program the authentication

Sounds good. Would you want to extend it any, using place names etc? So
calls to +1604xxx show up as "Canada" or "BC, Canada" (or even "Vancouver

With all the discussion about licensing issues and the sort, I think it's
time for a full blown 3rd party application to work with Asterisk while at
the same time not causing Asterisk to become encumbered. For such a
project, I'm license neutral. While I prefer the BSD license, the GPL would
work just as well for such a project.

I'd say the first order of business, is to move this discussion to a
separate list so as not to annoy the purists. Perhaps Digium would be
willing to host it? Call it Asterisk-Addons and let us go have some fun?

Here's some general thoughts on the project.

For management, the interface and API is already defined. The only way I
can think to improve this, is with the addition of SNMP read/write as well
as traps, but I'm sure that would create additional licensing issues for
Digium.

For general configuration, we can write text configuration files. We could
also add a hook in Asterisk to tell it to obtain it's configuration from a
different fd (one that opens a socket to our stand-alone system). Doing
this would allow suckers (like me) to run a live configuration from a MySQL
database, and would allow Digium to say "too bad it crashed, but we can't
help you if you're not using the default configuration schema."

For accounting, asterisk can write to a named pipe instead of or in addition
to the default csv file. The only other things I can think to add, would be
an option to send data to syslog as well.

Additional hooks can be defined if needed, as long as we used named pipes or
sockets or whatever to maintain a seperation. Doing it like this would keep
Asterisk at arms length from the encumbered code, allowing Digium to keep
the dual license option while also allowing the rest of the world to explore
the possibilities.

This afternoon I used the list of NPAs (Area Codes) at
http://docs.nanpa.com/cgi-bin/npa_reports/nanpa?function=list_npa_geo_number>
and requested the XML dump for each NPA from Telcodata.us, then compressed
the tar file of all of them. FYI, I rate-limited wget and put a "sleep" in
the shell loop so as not to abuse their network's generosity.

If someone wants the entire thing, I've temporarily left it at
http://thecomplex.com/npanxx_info.tar.gz>.

I figured that NPAs change infrequently enough to warrant caching this info
with the CDR web interface, rather than calling it from some remote web
database.

Do we have any Visual Basic or .NET programmers out there? The reason I
say that is this. I would suggest that a program or application be put
together with Visual basic or .NET that will generate the config files for
you by translating what you want to do in telephony terms/jargon to
asterisk cofiguration terms/jargon. Maybe an FTP application be included
as a module to the application. Maybe even a test bed module that will
emulate your results without having to put the config files on the
asterisk box itself, lowering the risk of any complications that may occur
when making changes. How it would work is like this:
1. Windows application started.
2. User defines the variables within the application that pertains to
his/her telephone service environment.
3. Any incomplete variables do not get written to the config file that
will be generated.
4. When completed setting up all available variables, the user can run an
asterisk emulation test to verify that the configuration is bolean.
5. Upon verification of a bolean setup, the user can create the config
files by pushing a "generate configurations" button.
6. Files could be written/generated to a directory specifically related to
the application that generated them.
7. Using the FTP module within the application, the user can migrate the
config files to * box. (Application can have a dropdown menu of possible *
boxes to migrate the config files to.)
8. Once the user has verified the correct configuration files in place,
the * box can be reloaded and physically tested.

No reason to put it in a dead end language like VB. At least you might
be able to use something in .net on an alternative to windows system.

Also if it had to be written in VB to get more developers, it probably
won't get used because those types of programmers are unlikely to use
linux in any fashion.

Of course we still haven't seen if Mickysoft is going to use copyright
and patents to stop .Net from running on anything they don't get paid
for. Remember that not the whole spec was submitted for ECMA approval.
Mickysoft held back to control the playing field. Until we know the
rules of the new Mickysoft field, be wary.

How about doing it in Java with Java web services(for conf file generation
and user authentication,e t c) so that way other developers can write in
other languages such as PHP or perl different front-ends but consume the web
services over http.

Well this is the way I plan on doing it so the code is more reusable by
others in the future.

Then please reread the whole of my argument. I was arguing only against
a front end that couldn't be used on other platforms also. This is why I
was so down on VB, it is only usable on Windows. I was mildly down on
.net stuff only because of the potential to have the mono rug ripped out
from under you. At least with a C++ app and a cross platform widget set,
you could write for windows and get linux and BSD for nearly free.

Look, I agree with you, and I would be happy if I could to build the
application in C or C++, but I don't know nothing about these languages.
You must believe me, in a near future I will try to dedicate my time to

If this is the case, obviously you need more experience in
creating user friendly web frontends. Some that I have
seen are brilliant and look great on any OS. PHP is best
suited to what we are trying to do, because it's powerful,
it has all the feature we want to use and it runs on the
server. Introducing FTP transfers and other such
mechanisms is just asking for trouble. Plus tying it to a
windows system is very Anti-productive.

Then please reread the whole of my argument. I was

Steven, i resent the discrimination of VB programmers,
especially the comment: "those types of programmers are
unlikely to use linux in any fashion". I've been writing
in VB for 8 years and it was the first language I learnt.
I still use it occasionally. Even though I use C on both
windows and Linux, Python and now PHP. It has it's uses.
:) Agreed though that this admin project is not one of
them. :)

As for the rest of this discussion, I have already started
work on this Asterisk Web Interface. (visit
http://astweb.sourceforge.net). The current release is
still only the CDR section, but things are starting to
evolve and I expect to have something usable in the next
few weeks. It is being written in PHP and will attempt to
use ZERO OS-DEPENDANT code.

I've not trimmed this message on purpose to have a collection of

I think it's safe to say that a PHP based system is what is going to
garner the most support. I'm not great at PHP yet, but will learn, need
to get this done. I'll be happy to start on Voicemail which I think
ties into Extensions. Extensions seems to be the biggest task and the
core of the work that ties in most other things. I'd be happy to start
there but need some assistance.

Jamie, I'm sorry if you took that as a insult about VB programmers. I
was getting ahead of an argument that didn't materialize. I have coded
in VB also. But the comment stands that if the language was chosen
specifically to ease getting developers, then the developer pool was
also shrunk by the other side of the project using linux. Most VB
programmers are fully bought into Windows. Else they would learn more
languages like you have, and Gustavo has said he plans to.

Also Gustavo, I was not trying to insult you either with my comments
about VB. I was not trying to flame you or cause a language war.

Original quote we are referring about, by myself...

I don't like frontends, but I know how to do good frontends. In this case,
the owners of the system don't want to use web application. Why? I don't
know! What do suppose to do? Break customer faces with a hammer? If the
customer wants windows app, I give him the windows app.

I know that frontends are really useful for everybody. I love consoles and
write plain text-files, but is my opinion...
My boss and the customers wants a windows app to configure *. I'm not happy
doing this, but is my job.

Certainly, PHP is the best option to do frontend.

You can create a "web browser" like app with Visual Basic and the
internet explorer rendering engine. Fool them Johnny

Is this a Jazz-inc copyright project or are you willing to just open it all
up and make it an astweb team effort ?

Like i and others have said in earlier posts would be good to join efforts,
setup a roadmap and get a couple of php programmers working on something in
joint effort.

Tj

If you look at the sourceforge page its GPL..

Exactly right.. The mailing lists on SF for the project are probably the
best place to debate and rationalise features for this project..
Although they are brand new so there isn't much activity right now..

Later..
