I haven't read any books written by Tom Clancy, but I've watched a friend of mine playing through some of the Splinter cell games, which Clancy have wrote the story of. Those games are fantastic! Re: a code behind the bible

Thomas... I'll respond in more detail tomorrow, but that was an interesting post... and one that I agree on to an extent. At any rate, I'm glad we can discuss these things without tearing each others' throats out... and I hope my posts haven't been too preachy either, and if they have I appologize in retrospect. lol I will say though, I don't think it's always the case that new Christians don't sit down with other religious texts and read through them... even though I've been a christian for the last three years I would still consider myself new to the faith in many ways. Growing up in a home that pretty much had no particular set of religious beliefs other than Buddhism practiced by my Dad's side of the family, I did a lot of research... but what ultimately lead me to faith wasn't an emotional need or logical reckoning. Again, as we've discussed before... this is all objective so there's no real way to explain. But it wa
s a personal experience that can't be reasoned out by any of those... the first time I ever felt God pulling me in the right direction was before I even became Christian, so at the time I had no idea what it was, though I have no doubt about it now. As for the bible being a guide, well, the short answer which is all I have the energy to write at the moment is that it's another thing that believers and non-believers will be at a stalemate about for a long time. There's no way for believers to prove its inerrancy and divinely inspired nature to the satisfaction of atheists / agnostics, and no way for the opposing side to convince strong-faithed believers with rational and acceptable proof since that's not all there is to our belief.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178479#p178479

Re: I have a deep desire to build higher quality games for blind people.

Hi.Here are my answers:1. Understand how to make any conventional game work perfectly for blind people.Well, I think the best way to learn this is by push out some beta versions so people can come up with some great feedback. Lots of developers have had a huge success on doing that.2. How to push the limits of audio games to greater heights (this would require a commercial product though)I would gladly pay for a high quallity product, and I'm sure others will as well. There are always people in the world who don't have the money which is not good. But if people want a high quallity game, they have to pay. That's my opinion though.3. Give back to this wonderful community with free games. Nobody should neglect any group of people. It makes me mad.that might only work if you're willing to work for free or if others donates to you.I would love to hear more about the problems. What frustrates you about all games today
? What need isn't being taken care of? What would you do differently?Hmm... that's quite difficult to answer. what we need? We need a huge, huge rpg game in english in a 3D world where you can go up, down, left, right, back and forward. the game should have the same amount of levels like a mainstream game, and there should be lots of hidden things, lots of unlocables and lots of trophies. it would be cool if the game would be self voiced, but text which outputs to a screenreader would also be okay, at leased for me. I'm missing a huge game which takes months to complete.I know an online huge RPG is in work, but that would also be awesome. A farmville type of game sounds interesting.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178476#p178476

Re: a code behind the bible

Bladestorm360, I for one don't consider your post too preachy. I for one am just happy that we can openly discuss our individual points of view, share ideas, and express our opinions without resorting to childish behavior like name calling, putting the other person down, or making the other party feel stupid for having an apposing viewpoint. I appreciate and respect the right to believe as one so chooses, and to express and share that viewpoint even if I may not always agree with it. I am sure there are some here that may consider some of my posts too preachy or militant towards the bible and Christianity as I no longer share those religious viewpoints myself, but I feel we all have a right to at least express our opinions as long as we do so in a way that is respectful of the other party's opinions. As for the subject of morality I'm not at all surprised that we have differing opinions on morality and that is okay. As I no longer believe in a literal God I ob
viously don't take it on faith that the bible is the inspired word of God thus have come to my own conclusions of what is moral, what is right and wrong, and those are based mostly on modern humanist principles. In short, for me in order to declare something evil, a sin, I first determine what harm it does to someone or to society as a whole. With that definition in mind its obvious that murder is evil because it wrongly takes someone's life without justification. Steeling would be wrong because it deprives someone of something that is rightfully their's. Adultery is wrong because it deprives a husband or a wife of their spouse's emotional and physical affections. Sins like those were considered crimes long before the bible was ever written, and we know from our oldest writings that people have considered things like that to be morally wrong for thousands of years. Thus as a humanist I am in no position to disagree with those viewpoints as I do see how and why th
ose sins do quite a bit of harm to individuals as well as society as a whole. Therefore outlawing them was a necessity. However, there are some sins I would call questionable. In the bible it outlaws fornication, sex outside of marriage, as a sin. Well, if you go by my humanist point of view a sin is something that harms people or society you may be able to justify it as a sin if you consider that fornication can lead to the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies outside of marriage. The thing is thanks to modern medicine both of those are really not problems if someone is responsible. The use of condoms or a diaphragm, for example, can both act as reasonable birth control and a preventative for sexually transmitted diseases.  There are medications such as the birth control pill that can help prevent unwanted pregnancy so if a couple are responsible I don't see a major problem with fornication as being too sinful from a humanist perspective.
Interesting enough my main complaint with the bible was not so much what it considers sinful, but more to do with what it doesn't consider to be major sins. Take rape as an example. It may surprise you to know that the old testament doesn't seem to take rape that seriously as a crime. According to the book of Deuteronomy it states if a man catches a young virgin out alone, rapes her, his punishment is to merry the young woman. However, if a man rapes another man's wife it is considered to be adultery and must be stoned to death. Thankfully, today we have much more rational laws regarding rape and nobody would insist that their sister, daughter, or some other unmarried woman just up and marry the man who sexually assaulted them. That's a ludicrous idea, and one that doesn't really punish the rapist for the crime he committed. So you are right we all judge the bible according to mortal standards, often from our current societal values today, and I
don't consider that to be a bad thing. I do think though that in terms of justice and morality we as a society have gone far past what was considered right and wrong at the time the bible was written, and that we must compare the bible to our current values to see if it is still a good guide to follow when it comes to morals and basic values. As a non-Christian I obviously have done that, and simply do not agree with everything the bible says to be right and wrong. I reserve my own judgement on that subject. All that said, your comments makes sense to me. As I said before I was a Christian for the first 25 years of my life, and I thought a lot like you do at that time. It is interesting that I am an atheist who use to be a Christian and you are a new Christian who use to be an atheist so we have switched rolls. That makes our discussions all the more interesting, because I think we both have unique perspectives on the subject and we are both in a sense going through a tr

Re: help with Harry potter TXT files?

I used to have an archive of a very unorganized folder that contained author names as directories, and inside those were directories for series.  A typical path might have looked something like:/Fics/Whydoyouneedtoknow/Dangerverse/Surpassing Danger.txtWhich is fine, but the problem is that it's impossible, based on that information alone, to figure out the status of a story.  The folder I used to have had URLs at the top of its stories, so one way to figure out the story status is to visit those URLs in a browser.Nowadays, I find archived folders to be unnecessary and, frankly, a violation of author's rights.  They posted the stories on fanfiction.net, not to the folders, so out of courtesy, the least people could do is ask for permission.  In any event, the other reason I read from a browser is because it allows me to give back in some form.  You can review stories, etc.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178454#p178454

Re: Backing up my computer?

There are two problems with an external hard drive, as I see it.  Firstly, they fail.  Secondly, they're on-sight, which means that if, say, your house burns down, you've lost all your data.  Not good.Frastlin, backing up your entire drive is not only unnecessary, but it's frankly a waste of space.  Backing up your entire internal drive means that you back up literally the entire drive.  That means that Windows gets backed up.  All your programs.  The registry.  As you can see, that's entirely unnecessary, and if you restored such a backup, you could potentially screw things up.So here's what you do.  Back up what's important to you.  You could use Dropbox, which is a cloud-based solution that will synchronize everything in its folder up to the cloud.  For free, you get 2GB; however, there are paid storage plans available, and there are also ways to g
et a little more free space.Another option is Carbonite online backup, which is a service that backs up your hard drive for about $5 a month. There are many, many other options.  Mega, Google Drive, etc are other options.  Cloud storage is so hot these days, there are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of other solutions.Myself, I use Dropbox.  I move everything important into my Dropbox folder, and whenever I make changes to documents or other projects, they get backed up immediately.  It works well.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178453#p178453

Happy to say that I am almost done with the first version of the archive. It will be up soon, and then Sebby may also convert it to a website. But then, if he does that, you will have to email him to contribute your stuff. The thing will be up tomorrow hopefully, but bitcasa is kind of slow on uploading since I flooded it with file upload requests. I do not want anyone to end up getting corrupted setup files. I am right now getting corrupt setup errors on some of the files, so will wait for things to calm down before moving it over to bit torrent sync. Hello GameDev!Welcome to the audio games forum!Let's get onto your questions...1: swamp, Road to Rage, and 3d velocity. In three of these games, You have high quality sounds, high quality development and code, and great excitement. Many audio gamers might disagree with me, But If you want my opinion, Except these one that I mentioned, there are really not great audio games out there. As you know  an audio game means that all the pictures come by audio, thus the pictures need to be in great high quality, and accurate at the same time. It's hard to achieve this by audio, but It is achievable. If you do a search, you realize that even video games that were developed in  2004-2005 has better sounds that audio games do these days. Though We should consider the fact that Those games were developed by very big companies with lots of budget in there hands. Now, we have also games that Audio quality really doesn't matter, but
the complexity really does. Games like tactical battle, and entombed.  Like world of warcraft and dwarf fortress, the audio games that I mentioned are amazing to play do to high complexity, but they don't need to have high quality sounds. For Japanese audio games, I have no idea about them. I really do not have the time to learn a fourth language, or install 5 little programs to  try and fiddle with a game.2: I'm still in surprise that why no one has made a single game that could have voice commands. People who are blind can speak, can hear! They can command their troops, their ally, their co-pilot, their units by voice, and many many more exciting possibilities can come by voice commands, though I wonder what keeps developers from  developing such games.lack of profession? lack of money?3: That could be a great idea, but I personally do not like touch screens.  down with touch screens for ever~4: As many keys as it

[[wow]], great to see that development is going on. Just a question, have you found a Story you could use? Just in case, if you don't have found one and make only different missions, you could make it so that there's an mode with an end after the missions or after a certain number of Tasks you complete successfully. So, the game could be beatable anyway and for fans of unbeatable games, there could be another mode for this. This way you have all Options. I myself prefer games with an end that means that I can beat them at a certain Point. What do you think?URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178446#p178446

Re: abandonware central

Update. I am now downloading the stuff now, and actually, @Sebby there's actually a disadvantage to using a webspace versus a bt sync folder. The advantage, of course, is no software installation. The disadvantage, as seen on the many mirrors for things like the dectalk archive that were converted to bt sync, is that the more people downloading the files, the more bandwidth is used, and that means that it things will take more time to download and you may have to pay additional costs for bandwidth. THe disadvantage for a bt sync folder is that there is a client needed, but the advantage here is the exact opposite. The more people download the folder to their computer, the easier the download, and download time will be faster, as with normal bit torrents. It's called seeding. The more people download a torrent, the faster and easier the download becomes, same here.URL: http://forum.audiogames.ne

I don't think there's much I can say that hasn't already been said, other than "Yay! Hopefully more comes of this than my akrasiatic flailing!"Swamp, Entombed, Shadow Line, and the Bokurano Daibouken trilogy make up the bulk of the audio games that get anywhere near mainstream quality, though there might be a number of runners up. (My vision started out crappy-but-enough-to-play-Mario, then got worse, so I have a hard time sticking with games that don't approach those standards. So Aprone's games and the Japanese games are most of what I play. And my games, of course, but they aren't as fun for most people as they are for me, for a number of reasons but mostly because I usually code for myself first then try to make it user friendly on top of that, which is as terrible a strategy as it sounds. )I'd like seeing more games th

Aprone finally made the mouse relevant with Swamp (but he tried before that with Daytona and the Book of Gold, which I suddenly feel could use a renaissance...); experimenting with something new in that department can do nothing worse than fail, right?I've reread my post and am struck by how incredibly narcissistic I sound, so I'll leave it here and wish you the best of luck! What about some street fighter inspired games, like breaking barrels as they roll toward you from various directions? You could expand this into projectiles, like you'd have to kick barrels that roll at you, but sometimes the game would launch cans or glasses at you that you'd have to punch to knock away from you or break. You could also have a game where your objective is to dodge projectiles that you can't knock away, like jumping over rolling boulders, ducking under high speed metal balls, etc.You could also have item collection bonus levels, where your goal is to collect as many items as possible that keep spawning. The items would be in barrels, garbage cans, etc, and you'd have to punch or kick that item to break it open and collect the tokens or whichever items you decide to use there, in a given time limit.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178435#

Re: Sound Libraries in python

No,pos.py is the file that is in post 7.at SoundMUD:,It would be awesome if you could create a module that dealt with these sound problems in a very nice way. I looked on pygame's website and there is nothing in their packages that help one with 3d sound in any way. Have you considered uploading this to their website? Some things I would like would be:a limit of squares away before the sound is at 0, 0, so for example:stereo(5, 6, 5)x, y, distanceThen it would sound if someone got within 5 squares of it. Although, how would you then account for solid objects being in between the sound and player? Also, in the same vane, having the limit for a player to hear would also be nice. So you could say that the player can only hear sounds within 10 squares. The script would check what number is the lesser and decrease the sound on that percentage. So if the creaking door had a distance of 5 and the player could hear in a di
stance of 10, the 5 would take precedence.Wouldn't one use sound above in side-scrollers or walking around a 2d grid?It is really awesome that you have the skills to create a sound controller like this!URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178429#p178429

Yes, fan fictions for anime and manga are good... but they don't tell you what exactly happened in the manga or anime. They're just stories that take place in the same universe. But for those of us who want to experience the actual manga themseves... there currently isn't any way to do that. Like I said, it's a bit hard to explain. The sounds play or try to at least, but there is kind of a crackling sound and it seems the tempo is very slow. You're probably right, this kind of stuff happens most when there are too many sounds to play. But I'm also having some other issues. The brackets to view the history don't seem to work properly for me. I can use it maybe once, it'll say player X is now known as and then my name. And after that each press of the brackets does nothing.Furthermore the = key to select the mj something doesn't work at all. I also can't type the = key into the chat function. Re: a code behind the bible

Bladestorm and Nocturnus, both of you have taken the time that I didn't have to write down what I wanted to say. All I can do is echo it and say Amen to that. I don't have time to write down a lengthy response... but I agree with everything that was said, including being a skeptic. Though having been a Christian for three years, I would actually say it's very hard to imagine myself going back to my life without God.. a life where I lied and found amusement in anything that made me feel good, from partying and drinking to trashing others. And Nocturnus also had a point... the last thing that anyone wants to admit is that we just aren't good enough. No matter how we might want to try and deny it. To humble yourself and realize that in fact, you are not as good a person as you think... or that there is a higher standard you can't meet is a thing that is hard for anyone, even Christians, to admit. Yet it's the willingness to open up to that idea and turn
to Jesus for help when God reveals himself to us in whatever way he chooses. Some say God is a tyrant, and that the two understandings of God being tyranical vs. being merciful and forgiving can'tt go hand in hand. Well, of coourse they can't... if you don't have the ability to see the big picture. and which one of us is as omniscient as God? We can only understand so much... and from our limitted viewpoint, that may be how it appears. That's not to say I don't sympathize with non-believers. There are times when I do ask why God lets something happen, or why God is so brutal in a given situation... yet there are details surrounding events that I just can't understand, and nuances which are impossible for my limitted human knowledge to see, because to be all knowing is something not humanly possible...URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178423#p178423

Re: a code behind the bible

Nocturnus, thank you for posting that. It was incredible to read. A lot of that is what I was so desperately trying to say, but I was afraid I had royally screwed it up with my last post. Especially after reading James 3, where he says that in trying to spread the word, every time we open our mouthes, we get it wrong nearly all the time. I think you stated it in a much more clear and concise manner, and I learned a lot from your post. I completely agree, from experience, that there is no way to truly convince a non-believer that there is a God. The problem is that you really have to accept the gift of Christ before God will show you that yes, he absolutely is there and he does love you. Otherwise, he'd be taking away your free will. If God wanted to, he could come down to earth right now and prove, beyond any doubt, to every one of us, that there is a God, and there is a heaven and a hell. That isn't the way God says he wants it though, at least not how I understand it.
What God seems to want is a relationship with all of his creations. He seems to want us to choose to follow him, not out of fear or to save ourselves, but because we need him and want a relationship with him. It might be at first that you just start following God to save yourself, but for me, that isn't where it ended. At first, when I was told it was a binary decision, either you accept Christ's gift of salvation or you don't, I thought, well, this is easy. I'll just wait until I'm about to die, then say, I accept Christ's gift of salvation. That way I'm all set. I can live the way I want and just in case there is a hell, I won't be going there. I'm pretty sure, that would not have worked. I think that works if someone accepts Christ on their death bed and is genuin, but not if they had premeditated the idea strictly to save themselves and not to form any kind of a relationship with the saviour.Yes, I could absolutely go back to m
y old life of drinking gallons of alcohol a week, trashing people for fun, filling my life with humor of all kinds and mocking God at every turn. But I absolutely will not. God has blessed me in so many ways already that not only would I be disrespecting God in an even worse way than I used to, but I'd have to live with myself, knowingly accepting that I had thrown away a loving relationship with my creator and gone back to my life of sin. I almost lost everything once over that past life, and only through the grace of God was I able to catch myself and get things back on track. If I were to renounce God at this point, the bible says my demons would come back 7 times as strong, and I've no doubt I'd end up losing everything important to me, probably ending up in jail or dead.I understand that not everyone's life is like mine. Not everyone is chugging alcohol for entertainment, or even getting humor out of mocking God. But our culture seems to be so heavily
based around chasing the next high, what I now believe to be trying to fill that God-shaped hole everyone has with things. Whether it's something as obvious as drugs or finding the perfect woman, or as simple as just trying to leave a physical legacy in a writing business. For me, nothing was ever enough without God, there was always something to reach for, and happiness was so fleeting. I don't ever want to go back to that.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178419#p178419

I don't have any problems opening Morokuma's original site. I think it has to do with your location, since I've heard of others having the problem. As for controlling midi volume Assault, you have two options:The first is to press f6 within some of the games. I think the only ones this doesn't work on is Tia Story 1 and 2. This modifies everything though, both music and sounds. Basically you get the same affect with the windows volume control.Your second option is to install CoolSoft Virtual Midi Synth, then while it's active, basically if you have a game open, press control alt M to open the mixer and then you can use the up and down arrows to adjust the midi volume.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178414#p178414

Re: I have a deep desire to build higher quality games for blind people.

First off, since I am fully sighted I do not think I should try to answer the 3 questions you've asked above.  My answers would not help you in the slightest, haha!  GameDev wrote:Is there no commercial market for games? I could see why major developers would avoid a market that is mostly free or shareware.    There are developers who sell games they've created, but the vast majority of audiogames seem to be small-scale games that are free.  You could think of the audiogames scene as one huge assortment of indie games.  In the mainstream world we are both aware of how important the indie games can be, so it's interesting to see how a game community can exist on them alone.    Major developers are likely to avoid making audiogames directl
y (meant specifically for the blind) because there just aren't enough customers to make the necessary profits.  If accessibility can be added to their mainstream projects, then we are looking at a more realistic goal.  That is about the only way they would be able to justify costs, because the small amount of money they'd bring in from this group only has to cover the extra costs of adding that accessibility.  The bulk of the game would still be being funded by the massive mainstream (sighted) market.GameDev wrote:Also, based on your personal experience and just plain guessing, how many total blind gamers do you think there are?    Everyone would have their own way of guessing at this, but I'll do what I can to at least help.  In it's hay day, and back when it was free to play, Swamp had around 3600 unique "active" players.  Based on what a
handful of other developers had told me, this was just about the most they'd seen in a game.  Because of that, I'd estimate this is close to your ceiling.  More exist I'm sure, but just like in mainstream, you'll have a group that is never interested in playing anything beyond solitare or yahtzee type games.  I get the impression that you're aiming at something more than that.      Due to reasons I could no longer avoid (believe it or not but the blind community has a large number of malicious hackers), Swamp switched over to using paid accounts earlier this year.  Accounts are still being slowly sold, but right now it is at about 350.  I doubt most developers will share their sales figures, so this information may be helpful to quite a few other audiogame developers actually.  LOL!    Assumin
g accounts continue to sell, this puts sales pretty close to 10% of the original player base.  I don't know what the conversion rate is for mainstream games, but you'll always lose a vast majority of players when a free game becomes paid.  It is also important to note that those 350 paying customers are spread out across the globe.  Much effort goes in to keeping everything running smoothly as the game and server deal with foreign characters from more languages than I care to keep track of.  It turns out to be a lot of work to get up to that 350 number, so if you are making a game you must consider how it will work in other countries or you are going to lose far more than half of your potential sales.  In mainstream circles we aren't used to that, since we could make a game that only works in 1 major city and it would bring in more than 350 players, Haha!    Hopefully this information is helpful, and not discouraging.  I
applaud your desire to come in and contribute to the audiogames scene in your own unique ways.  I whole heartily agree that no group of people should ever be ignored!URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178413#p178413

Re: I have a deep desire to build higher quality games for blind people.

I have no idea why japanese games seem to be better. I can tell you that their school system seems to have a much greater emphasis on self-disciplin and being creative, so that might have something to do with it, but I'm really not sure. Right now though, it seems like for the most part, japanese game devs are the only ones putting major plots into their games, many of them on par with games like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Most of the games we have in english have a heavy emphasis on gameplay, and either very little or no plot. We didn't even have what are now considers major staples of mainstream gaming, such as boss fights and game endings for quite a while. In early versions of games, when we beat a game, we were simply told, "congratulations, you've won." and were returned to the main menu. No credit roll, no accomplishing music, nothing. Games have gotten better since then, we've got some games with achievements or trophies, games with minim
al cutscenes and some plot, but nothing like what the japanese game devs have put out. At least not in my opinion. As for Links, here are some of what I consider examples of our better games in english. As I said I don't really have a favorite out of these, though all of them are fun to play now and again. Many of these are free, though Entombed needs to be unlocked for money to play past dungeon level 7.Entombed: http://www.blind-games.comSwamp: http://www.kaldobsky.com/audiogames (You can also find some other great conceptual games here made by Aprone, such as a tower defense game and some strategic simulation games., all free)Sound RTS: Warcraft style realtime strategy game. http://jlpo.free.fr/soundrts/MTG Studios: Some great concepts, especially for side scrollers and platformers. Heavily inspired by a japanes
e side-scrolling series for some of his projects. Other projects he creates can be found in the New Releases forum on this site, under the name masonarm1999. http://mtgstudiosus.tk/downloads/ and http://mtgstudiosus.tk/projects/If you're at all interested, you can find most of the links to the japanese games in my guide in the articles room, though unless you know how to use a screen reader, the translation utilities probably won't work too well for you and you'll have to experiment a little. Though, because of the way the games are programmed, you could just have a google translate window open and paste any output from the game into that window.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178408#p178408

Yeah but I will provide instructions. And if the clients go, that doesn't matter. We can keep setup files. And, bt sync is still in stable beta stages, so I highly doubt it would go away. At the same time, bt sync folders can be stored anywhere, so you can combine it with cloud storage services that give you a virtual hard drive, like bitcasa.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178407#p178407

It's a while since I've used bgt, but I thought the alert function took two arguments, the title of the dialog window and the message in the dialog. So wouldn't the "hello" be the first argument and the "I am a bgt script" be the second? I'm probably just confused with something else, because otherwise I can't think of what would be wrong with the script...URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178404#p178404

Hi. On those servers you can't play with only AI players. In order to test the mod, I suggest go into the server menu and opening a private server. It should work then.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178400#p178400

I can't speculate on either one, really. It's impossible to say... because we have so many people who play who are scattered around the globe. As to Japanese games... honestly, I don't know either. But I would seriously urge yoou to try these games if you don't mind exploring and trying to figure out some of the things through translations. there's a topic on this forum about them that's right below this thread.
