Re: LLVM discussion

A home-brew compiler isnt the answer: if youre looking for community contributions, then a compiler is too complex. Not to mention the fact that its going to be ugly and hard to understand, at least unless its something youve done before. Most worthwhile contributions arent going to be done via the engine, theyre going to be done in the engine. This is an important point to think about. But youve still not answered the question. I can provide at least 50 different definitions for game, varying mostly according to supported gameplay features, and at least 3 different definitions for engine. In order to discuss this we need more.let me put it another way. Bare with me on this, because its important. Accuracy to reality is not the point: I know that, by the definition of community contributions, its intended to be free. But were visiting fantasy lan
d for a moment. You are the CEO of a company and youve just developed your amazing and commercial audiogame engine. Bob Smith comes along and asks you Why should I buy this? Ive already got x, y, and z. What do you tell him? What does your engine, now that it is finished in some sense, let our imaginary consumer do? Your goal is not to portray your companys values or your personal opinions. Your goal is to tell Bob why he cares.Once we know why Bob cares, we can talk about how to get you to that point. This is not something unique to this thread. Other people do this. Libaudioverse did it, though less explicitly: I knew from Camlorn_audio what people wanted and couldnt get, and I knew what I wanted and couldnt get. I did not do this for Camlorn_audio, and now Ive got several thousand lines of abandoned code. Before I even wrote a single line of code for Libaudiovers
e, I had answered the question as to how my imaginary Bob Smith would program with it, and what it would let him do that he couldnt do elsewhere. This particular idea is not unique to me: imagining the imaginary customer is a pretty standard thing, even at places like Microsoft. And dont make the mistake of thinking that your engine is free. Its not. It might not cost money nor get you anything, but its going to cost Bob time and effort to learn it and transition from what he used to use. And so in this sense Bob had to pay.Saying community contributions are good and lets people make games is broad. So broad that assembly language fits in some sense. With those two statements together, you could use literally anything. Because of the nature of your project, you need not be concerned with being friendly to other programmers from the community: any programmer who cant learn more than o
ne language is probably not at the point of being able to write robust, reusable code for other game developers. And, to be honest, your project wont get far without more definition. If I say anything goes, then everything goes. And the project collapses from its own weight and complexity. The input library has 10 special cases for everything from card to rhythm to first-person shooters, all in different coding styles and uncommented. Saying what your project is also says what it is not and, from that base, lets you know what you can and must exclude.

Re: cleaning up my pc to speed up performance?

So mostly, turning stuff off at startup isnt going to help. It will some, but the important question is which things are using stuff over a long period of time. Theres no guarantee that its not being fired up by something else later and if they all just go idle after start-up, then why kill them? Youre going to have to do your own research; I will not ever give advice on disabling specific processes, drivers, or services. Its not a safe thing to do and if you arent able to do your research then dont touch it. If there is any question whatsoever as to whether you want to turn it off, the answer is that you dont. because you can find yourself in situations where you cant fix it, at least not without competent sighted help at the least. But in this case, thats already a really tiny list anyway, and theres probably not much more you can get rid of.

Actually, a lone of 50,000 to start out with is fine. You just need to invest it wisely, and I have already built a couple of theme parks with about 50,000 to start out with. The thing about this game is figuring out the best investments for your money early on so you can quickly pay back that lone and start making profit to expand the park.

Re: A really good Dr. who related Youtube series

Jack did occur to me, however Jack seemed to know who actually was interested in flirting with him and who not, and to hold back on people who werent, heck, look at his behaviour around Riece, Gwens husband, and in fact Gwen herself at least after he got to know her. River just seems to push herself at everyone and everything, which is as disgusting as it sounds. With jack also, the flirting was only part of what he did, heck, hes a time agent and ex con man whos close to imortal, an expert in technology and head of a secret government agency who also happened to live through most of the 19th century. Theres much more in his character to play with. I know River is supposed to be this awsome archaeologist indiana jones type character, and to have all those crazy Mophat super powers, but really they just dont mean a lot to her character the way say Jack being a conman or a compitant police officer does. If we play the plinkit game, there are lots of ways I can describe jack without referring to his flirting. Hes confident and engaging, yet also world weary and synical on occasion though makes up for this with inthusiasm, even if occasionally forced inthusiasm, he also knows there are things he should be afraid of. River is, - , well confident? and ,loud, and , misterious and quirky? Really if I forget about silence in the Library theres not a lot to say about River that doesnt relate to her silly back story. With Bf and the license, they are already in close communication with the Bbc so that they dont step on the toes of the series. for example, the story Patient zero was originally going to be called Victory of the Daleks until Bf learnt that 2010,the Bbc wanted to use the title, a shame sinse where as the Bbc victory of the daleks is widely regarded as the worst episode of New Who ever with the most ho
rrible Dalek redesign in history, the Bf story is a really awsome series closer that involves the Daleks spreading diseases throughout time and has cool temporal paradoxes as well as some awsome stuff for Charley and the sixth doctor. Bf actually are! doing the time war from the perspective of the eighth doctor, indeed at the moment in the 8th doctor continuity with the latest dark eyes it looks like the Time Lords are attempting to use a gasious life form which can take over other beings called The Eminance to wipe out the Daleks, but have realized that if anything The Eminance is worse and threatens to utterly take over the universe in the future.Theyve already had the Daleks attempting to erase the time lords from Existance, and in the end of their political Galifrey series you see the Daleks attempt to invade Galifrey and the time lords respond by sending someone back in time to get the fourth Doctor to try and alter the Daleks creation in the Tv s
tory Genesis of the Daleks. there is supposed to be a Galifrey series 7 which expands on this, though with the hole war Doctor shenanigans (which even though i personally think it didnt happen the Bbc dont agree with me), its doubtful they can show too much more. With the License itself, unfortunately I suspect its because the two series are legally different entities, sinse I know like a shot David Tenant wwould be back for Bf, heck before he was the Tenth Doctor hes played several parts for them already, from a very fervant and unpleasant Nazi, to a racist and biggoted colonel in the Unit series, to a genetically engineered soldier created to lead humans against the Daleks in the Dalek empire series. Actually the last of these is particularly weerd, sinse the soldiers have been bred to be specifically charismatic, meaning that Tenant is at his most extravert, and also the series finishes with him giving a long spe
ech about how wonderful humans are and how even if there is another war with the Daleks humanity will never become like the Daleks, that really! is difficult sinse it sounds so much like the tenth doctor even though hes exterminated just afterwards. Ironically, the series was recorded in 2005 as wel, so I wonder if, after Ecleston wussed out of playing the doctor davies heard that and went hay! that guy sounds like a good doctor, go get him! .

Re: cleaning up my pc to speed up performance?

Hi.To be honest I disabled all Toshiba stuff as I didnt need it running all the timepersistence doesnt need to be on though ians.On that noteI wouldnt touch windows services, yes I know that turning some of these off may help but to be honest the last time I did this on an old box windows went unstable and I had to reformat.I wouldnt touch windows services or registry or anything because windows just uses that stuff weirdly.I suggest using ccleaner.I also suggest not running Skype or dropbox at startup or jaws for that matter.I have nvda running at startup and msse and thats about it.Skype is a hog even for those that can see my cousin had issues with his i7 locking up at startup or slowing down a lot.it was Skype being loaded at startup.Using ccleaner, defrags, etc should increase performance.upgrading all drivers, and also clearing unneeded programs should help.especially
any windows live software.yes I know those of you on win8 have to live with it but if you have any extra live packs essentuals and other junk loaded get rid of it.I wouldnt go killing all the programs that come with your laptop everything hp is not bad, like everything Toshiba is not all bloat with no use.wild tangent games may be splashtop remote is inaccessible, also remove clickfree and Norton everything and all their customised adobe software because thats outdated by default. To be honest, if you are that set on making sure you are really performing ok, do the following.reformat and install windows 7 or whatever you want to use.install the following drivers.usb graphics, sound, network, lan wireless and thats all you need for your basic system.intel NVidia etc have driver updates but to be honest if you dont want or need an NVidia card pull it out, and use the crappy intel one on the board.I am s
upprised no one has mentioned before pcpitstop.com though.the free tests on there should tell you what you need to do.Note though that its fragmentation, cpu usage and memory/ driver errors are to sensitive.its main wish is for you to install their software and other junk.I am not sure about the access to that software but still.I use the tests to find any hardware errors which it will give you freely.Next try to reflash your bios or update it this may help you. Finally if things dont work well much pull the battry on the bios if you can and leave it out for 5 minutes and put it back and see.In msconfig boot advanced, check number of processers, and change that to the max you have, this will cause windows to use all cpu power at startup it only uses 1 otherwise. You may get a little performance. With sighted help in bios, if you have enough ram boost to max all buffers and memory shared devices if you must use a hi
gh end videocard get a radion unit.I have one, and while its driver is good and yes while you have to get rid of a lot of bloat at startup its quite stable.More so than the NVidia stuff I used and more than the intel cards I used.It also does help that amd units boards in particular come with the card, and if you get an amd card you will get hdmi audio with that to.As for other things, anything that says via on it sucks I have an i3 with via chipsets and as well as the interfaces being inaccessible, and such they are bloated and do not perform well.Realtech is in a lot of things fortunately and it performs well.To be honest though, if you really want performance and dont ned highend features then running the crappy ms drivers will probably be fine.I never do but if you dont care you can do that. The other thing Id do is get speedfan and install it, there is a smart info page for disks and other things.you want to
perform an online test, this will tell you if any errors are up and other things.Over that, who knows.I have a system that reboots randomly, but according to my diagnostics its within the norms and its fully optimised.

Re: Paladin of the Sky, new full length audio game RPG

To your first question: this is still a bug. The second floor is poorly designed and its easy to become trapped. Just die or something. To your second question: the boss drains health if you defend on the wrong turn. Every second turn, you have to take the hit rather than defending. This took a bit to figure out.If Im not mistaken, you can fire off Toxic Storm on round 1, then defend on round 2, then hit it on round 3, defend on round 4, etc. Doing that, you should be able to win with a bit of health to spare. If you try this and the thing drains a massive amount of health on round 2, 4, 6 or whatnot, then just switch rounds next time (as in, toxic storm on round 1, hit on round 2, defend on round 3(.Im pretty sure you defend on even rounds though. Let us know how it goes.

Hi,I really like this game, its fun to play. Even though this first boss took me ages and cost me quite a few lives. Yesterday I had a level where I couldnt find the last monster. I got to a section of the map where the monster sound played, but the thing was nowhere around. Either this was a bug or I just couldnt find it for some reason.Maybe a key to show where the nearest monster is could be a help, since it can get rather tedious to walk around the map for ages to find this last thing. Just a key which speaks the coordinates for the nearest monster would be enough I think, and Id guess that this would only really be needed for the last few monsters on a map.Edit:A few things regarding speech. My speech settings are not saved. The game says it can only save the settings temporarily and not save them to disk for some r
eason. In the main menu and the candy shop menu, sapi always speaks, regardless what my speech settings are. And if I have the game set to sapi, the main menu and shop menu are not spoken in the same rate and volume as the rest of the game, but with the standart values.End edit.Best regardsTikki

@visualstudio, one thing that you should use is Flex and Bison. Since a compiler requires you learn assembly language, I do not recommend it for a beginner. Try flex and bison. See how that goes.@camlorn, I love your analogy of the situation. +1 for that.@visualstudio, also, if you want it open source, youd better comment everything that you feel should be commented, and comment them well, because if you dont comment anything, your permanently, effortlessly, screwed. Take this situation into account:Youve just got home from work and your ready to program. You take a while to think up an idea. When you find one that sounds nice, you start the design phase. You think and plan it out, like a professional would, and then you start coding. You dont add any comments; comments arent needed, after all, are they? You think, No. Ill know what this means later. Now, unless you have an excellent memory like I do, this isnt going to w
ork. But you keep coding all knight, then compile and link the newly created program with out any errors or warnings. Youve done everything correct. Your program should execute fine, right? No. A couple months later, you get a bug report from a user. Remember, this is a solo project; no one else is helping you out. You go back into the code and... bang! Your browsing through it and have no idea what this or that does, So you cant fix anything.Because you didnt add any comments, your mind went blank when you next saw the code. Make sure to always use comments. They will help you in the long run. As I once read, clever programs work nice, but you can make a mess out of them. Commented programs, although a little more verbose, can help you succeed in the long run. Make sure you comment functions, variables that you think a normal user wouldnt understand, and others. Also, make variables human readable. For instance, instead of soundpointx,
use sound_point_x instead. It will help your users a lot if you do that.

Re: Announcing the first release of Park Boss, an amusement park simulator

Hi,Im enjoying the game so far.I agree with the person who said that the customers talk about your food being fantastic, even when you have no food places in your park. That shouldnt happen. Also, I think a really nice feature to add would be the ability to create your own rides and zones. If people created their own maps, we could have an entire community dedicated to sharing them, much like Swamp campaigns or Top speed cars and tracks. It would also be good for the times when youve unlocked all the attractions. I could see the game losing some of its appeal if theres no way to expand it.I also think that more of the attractions should be available to try out. Specifically, if food poisoning is such a major issue, as the boss, it makes a lot of sense that you might check on the cleanliness of the stands and restaurants, and eat some of the food yourself to make sure its good.

Re: Are these kind of behaviours weird and/or childish?

Ah, but if everyone in the world were more logical than emotional, that wouldnt necessarily be a good thing.Humanity is a balance between intellect and emotion, impulse and forethought. While I think that there are a lot of people who do rely too much on their emotional responses, think of all the professions that would simply evaporate if emotion were squashed. All the human services professions, for one. Although actually, they would probably turn into logic programmers, people who tried their best to stomp out the emotional triggers and responses of others. What a scary world that would be, and probably one thats explored in a ton of dystopian novels.

Re: LLVM discussion

I was considering flex and bison when making my compiler comments. I do not know anyone who doesnt use those or a similar tool these days; there are advantages to recursive descent parsers, but theyre a lot more work to write. Flex and bison probably arent even the best thing on the block these days: compilers can be written in hgher-level languages, and theres a lot of other options. This is because those tools arent just for copilers, even if that is their most common association. If youre trying to write a compiler without them, youve gone from hard to hell-in-life, or something we dont have an adjective for.Even with flex and bison (or similar), the top companies in the world recruit the top computer science people in the world, pay them huge quantities of money, and throw them at a compiler. 5 or 6 years later, its worth using.Ill be completely honest. You can get a com
piler, in the sense of compiling hello world. This can happen around the same time youre ready to make your first audiogame. yay, you say! It compiles. But your work is only 1% done, because youre probably not anywhere near doing error messages right (VC++ has somewhere around a thousand), youre going to need an optimizer (usually a grad-level compiler course), reimplement all the tools (ever wanted to know everything about your processor? yeah, thought not. Too bad you need to implement a good debugger...). Youll be refactoring like crazy: you can compile the print statement, but even adding the function restructures the entire internals of the compiler, and hello there Mr. Class, fiend of the extra 3 weeks of recoding things. Or you could spend 4 or 5 hours learning to embed a scripting language or something of the like (Im almost sure you can find a compiler for some language or other as a library.
; No telling which language, though). Quality compilers are hard. Really, really, bone-crunchingly hard. And thats not even talking about language design--if youre just copying another language, then use the other language; otherwise, you need to invent your own and most things that you can think of can and have already been done for you.In terms of code in general? Comments are nice for new programmers, but the need of them lessens with programming skill; most big code-bases dont have them nearly as much as one would expect. The best thing you can do is establish and stick to style guidelines What you choose doesnt matter so much as being consistent: I should be able to tell if x is a function, variable, or whatever by lookinga t how you styled its name. personally (C++), I use underscores and lower case for global and class variables, camelcase with capital first letter for types, underscores and all-caps for
constants defined with macros, and camelcase with lower-case first letter for functions. I follow them draconically. And heres the biggest one. The game engine is not the place for a new coder to contribute. The game engine must contain the best of the best in terms of features and code quality; its not one game, its hundreds, and any flaws are going to affect orders of magnitude more people. This is probably the hardest part of the whole thing.I can be more focused once you give me what Im asking for: a description of why Mr. Bob Smith cares.

Re: btSync: Is het good or are there simular accessible apps?

So is the new version of BT Sync accessible?Ive been wondering about that ever since I heard that they did a major overhaul of it about a month or so ago. Due to a lot of things going on recently, I havent had the time or the inclination to upgrade, and I figured Id ask before doing so. I plan to use it to share a rather large music folder with a friend pretty soon.

Whether its accessible or not, theres an NVDA add-on which make it accessible.
