Re: pyAGE - yet another Python audio game engine

I mean, in the end its up to personal preference. If a person manages to create a program without ever type checking, its fine, especially when done at home in a non-professional fashion. As soon as it becomes professional though, chances are very high that you won't work without type checking again. Same goes for indentation and some other things that blind people use to hate, and I did so too for quite a long time, until I got employed and noticed that people had to teach me how to properly use a pretty printer and that my code was literally unreadable, in addition to the fact that my code was just bad at that time .But as long as you are not planning to work with code professionally, you can literally do what you want, unless you want to reach out to the several open-source projects out there and lend them a hand.

To make your life Easier, you could add an object builder for people to creat content. You could let people upload them to some place like beatstar does with the sound packs, and then you can put a price on them for people to unlock them in the game.

Hello all. Here is the link for the public beta of the game. Note that when you unzip this, it will have to be in all English as the bat file needs to detect the folder path, and it doesn't play well with chinese characters. Also, there is a slight issue in that I haven't received my verification code yet. I am trying to figure out if it's a problem with gmail, or something else. In any event, here's the link for now. Its been a journey, what with SN9 tipping over in the high bay and requiring a few flaps to be swapped. Additional hot fire testing has been rather rigorous in order to get ignition more reliable. Finally however it seems that SN9 may fly within the next few days, as an FTS, or Flight Termination System has been installed, essentially a brick of C4, in case they need to abort the flight to avoid collateral damage. As always, schedules may slip, but hopefully we can see another grain silo flop through the air.

Re: Best RPG games for PC

keep in mind a western drama is not even an rpg. lol. well ok you are roleplaying as wade but that's about it, there is no rpg  mechanics. and no, nothing to explore there since you just have to follow your guide, I don't know following peapol is count as exploration. Paladin of the sky gameplay and story is just, bad, there is not much sounds. manamon 1 or 2 is recommended though but I think the second one is better. a hero's call is a big win win on the sounds department, that are including music, sound effects, and  voice acting which are so damn good. but yeah again, that's all about it, gameplay is just average and short, in the end you just have to throw your best skill and spell to your enemies,  no strategy needed. shadow rine is pritty good and has replayable volues although there is not much strategy as well. bk3 is the best one I think although the difficulty spike might throw you off sometimes.

Re: Connection problem to the playroom

Hello,Yes, I'm afraid that you will need to wait for 3.0 beta.Version 2.2.8 is from 2016-2017, and since then I'm on another computer, with new compiler, new DLL versions, etc. I'm no longer able to compile 2.2.8 without a significant effort on finding back DLL that were used at the time with their accompagniing link lib. Thank to GIT I have the source code, but not the rest.I think it isn't worth the effort to try to compile that version. I'll probably spend as much time as if I were trying to release a 3.0 beta sufficiently usable. So we have chosen that solution.Anyway, an update of the client is required to fix the SSL problem. Given that a client update anyway always triggers issues on users' side like antivirus false positives, download manager rejections, and other problems of the same kind, then better is to go forward, for better or worse.

It's not as bad as it used to be, but still kind of confusing.I'm trying to figure out whether this is a screen reader issue or a Cataclysm one. Re: Multi Linguists of the Forum...

English is absolutely a Germanic language. You can tell because most of the basic words are solidly Germanic. Old English, or Anglo-Saxon, borrowed a lot of Latin, it's true, but if you saw it, it would look a lot more like German. Here's some, so you can see it.Ur byþ anmod ond oferhyrned, felafrecne deor, feohteþ mid hornummære morstapa; þæt is modig wuht. Here's some Middle English, which was the successor to Old English.Nightes when I wende and wake,Forthy min wonges waxeth won;Levedy, all for thine sakeLonginge is ylent me on.In world nis non so witer monThat al hire bounte telle con;Hire swire is whittore then the swon,And feirest may in towne.Early Modern English is Shakespeare or the King James Bible, for example. Middle English was the start of a lot more Latin borrowing, via Norman French. That's because Norman French was the language of the nobility and law, as opposed to Old English, which was the language of the common people conquered by the Normans. Old English in particular had cases, like German. Nowadays most cases are gone, except for whom and a few other words. But note that Early Modern English thou is the equivalent of Ger. du. The verbs even worked the same, e.g. thou runnest, du rennst. English has certainly borrowed from a lot of other languages. But the base of it, which includes a lot of words and the grammar, are completely Germanic.

The Intel Mesa thing mey be because of a missing video driver. That would not break everything because X will fall back to the xf86-video-vesa driver if it can't find the one for your card. You should be able to get some hints about what is needed by typing in a terminal:lspci | grep VGAThe dx8vb installation happens through winetricks, and most likely comes directly from Microsoft, so that should not be a problem. I am not sure what would be causing the problems with Kitchensinc, but the problems with Super Liam, and if you tried it, Judgement Day, may be because of missing gstreamer libraries.

Re: Any accessibility news on Resident Evil Village?

Well, there's simply no replayability for RE7 whatsoever, and other modes are not playable for us. So once you complete the game there's pretty much nothing else to do.At 4 I highly doubt the game will be accessible, however the crafting and inventory management are the least of my concerns. OCR works really well with RE7 so I don't see why it wouldn't be the same for the upcoming Resident evil.

If you can get that to install, I would recommend deleting the installation of CP you have now and reinstalling it. Re: Confusion with low-level audio libraries

Autovectorization is interesting in the sense that it's never guaranteed, but it's much easier to write an autovectorized loop than it is to write SIMD intrinsics for two or more platforms at once.  The compiler will recognize all the common structures pretty reliably, e.g. adding two arrays, and that's that.  The only real trick is getting all the conditionals out of the loops, then maybe marking with whatever your compiler's loop hinting pragmas is to say "yes, it's worth doing this here".  But I haven't had to use those even once and even for something this performance sensitive you can just wait until it's too slow to be a problem.  In general as long as you write even halfway decent math code that's friendly to the architecture, the compiler will just do it and you can treat all of that as a black box.  Synthizer used to use the clang vector extensions, but I removed them and they're probably not coming back.If you want to go down the road of really understanding this stuff, honestly even more than I need, there's actually an accessible version of compiler explorer: https://godbolt.org/noscriptIf you don't know what that is, you paste a C/C++/Rust/Go/a bunch of others program into it, select a compiler and some flags, and it gives you the assembly.  Supports all the common platforms/architectures and frankly I have no idea how it's free, but it is.

if you want a great action RPG'S, either the BK series, particularly the 3rd one, is the best choice. it has a great story, many gameplay variety, tons of items to collect, and you can also try new difficulty options when you beat the game for the first time.then there is shadow rine. unlike BK 3, this is a 2D topdown action JRPG, similar to the older final fantasy or the legend of zelda titles. this one has a great story, multiple endings to get, and there's even an extra episode that you can unlock.

Bigger things like the PM notifications, mail stopped working, and no way to write to the forum staff. @2, wow, a lot to digest there. Autovectorization for me has always been difficult to get right; it seems like you have to write your code in a particular way. And pulling in architecture intrinsics is a pain (I still haven't figured out how to actually use SIMD properly and correctly). Your post was informative; I'll dig into Synthizer sometime and see if I can figure it out from there.

I don't think that's the problem, though. When you shift+tab back through the elements on the page (I'm using NVDA but this command is a Windows one so it might not matter), you can see the delete buttons. You can't activate them, but they still show. Only the delete buttons, mind you, but their presence would indicate you haven't lost your characters, just that Chrome and the site aren't playing nice with the display.I can see the things in Firefox, so I am going to assume this problem is specific to Chrome and this game in particular, and move on.I really don't think the cookie was tampered with, as I've had no issues like this with any other game I've played in Chrome.

Re: Arcane Fortune - Windows/Linux/Mac console-played grand strategy game

Hi zkline,The AI at least (and also your automated workers which use the same algorithm) build cities around ~350 tiles wide (which is around 1.7km). On average, the AI cities are twice as wide as they are tall (mostly because of the way terminals visually display characters in a non-square grid).I'd say 900 meters is reasonably close enough that you wouldn't need to build a new city hall for it.When I manually build cities I normally build them about the same size as the AI, maybe a little smaller. Making too large of a city can result in the residents on the outskirts not reliably finding a path to the city hall which means they don't pay taxes. I've throttled down a lot of the pathfinding for the residents for performance reasons. They search for new paths relatively infrequently. That is just to say if you find a lot of your residents unconnected from your city hall it might not be your fault. They may find a path soon enough. Sometimes they won't ever find a path but that's ok. Depending on the terrain you start on (like a meadow)-- you might not need to worry about squeezing out every penny of tax revenue because you'll still have enough residents paying that you can make due.A few words about the resources:Logs are reasonably common (although it does depend on your location, I suppose) and are mostly useful for building ships. The bonuses logs give are not very large compared to some of the other resources. In the menu you can go to Help then Encyclopedia to look up the bonuses each resource gives and the units you could eventually construct with it.Resources to look out for are the metals like iron, and things like horses, elephants or camels as these can allow you to build knights and other units that are stronger provided you have the technology. Most useful of all is uranium but that requires a lot of technology to even be able to see on the map -- not all resources are viewable until you have the tech to discover them.

Re: Confusion with low-level audio libraries

2021-01-24 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : camlorn via Audiogames-reflector

Re: Confusion with low-level audio libraries

The really short answer is read Synthizer, which uses Miniaudio. The slightly longer answer is it depends, so I will explain Synthizer:First, you want everything to be the same samplerate at some point.  Samplerate conversions are expensive, not enough that a couple matters but enough that if you run one per sound you're going to start hurting.  So you push that to the edge.  E.g. Synthizer buffers are resampled on load.  Unfortunately for streaming and for audio output this isn't always possible: in the streaming case you're of course limited to the samplerate of the original audio and have to insert one there, and for audio output it's sometimes the case that running the library at a fixed samplerate internally is a big win.  For Synthizer, that's 44100 because HRTF datasets like to be that way, and resampling those at runtime is complicated. The rest of this is basically summing arrays.  You take your sources of audio--Synthizer generators for example.  Sum those to sources.  Pan them.  Sum the output of those to the audio output buffers.  At each stage of this process, you might have to convert between channel formats, especially mono->stereo and stereo->mono.  Synthizer does that with specialized functions.  The general case is a matrix multiplication, but stereo->mono is (l+r)/2 and mono->stereo is just copying to two arrays, so it's worth it.  Also, you want to specialize the no conversion case, either to memcpy or to adding to an output buffer.Synthizer is fast enough to run in prod in debug builds.  You shouldn't, but you can, and that's been valuable for testing.  If you optimize you can do very demanding audio on the CPU.  Unfortunately this means running at maximum efficiency; Synthizer in a real world scenario can easily approach 50 megaflops or even a couple gigaflops or more, depending.  That's not too bad except that you're sharing the system, and it's effectively a hard realtime requirement, even more so than graphics.  To do so, you have to address 3 aspects.First, anything that might block the audio generation thread cannot happen on the audio generation thread.  That's not a hard rule, because sometimes it's just not possible to avoid needing to do memory allocation or something, but mutexes/locks are not your friend at all in any fashion.  You can make this a hard rule, but only if you add limitations like maximum number of sources.  Synthizer just says "here is some reasonable pre-allocated bits, if you do something crazy things might click while we grow the buffers", basically.Second, memory bandwidth is a problem.  Any excess zeroing of buffers, any excess buffers at all for that matter, will push things out of L1.  Your worst case is that things get pushed all the way to ram.  So you don't want that.  Synthizer deals with this in two ways.  First, instead of making buffers per object, you can make buffers per invocation of a function and cache them.  I estimated out the number of buffers a typical generator->source->context stack would need, then wrote a fixed-size cache which can hand them out on request.  Instead of putting a bunch of temporary buffers in your class for the intermediate steps, you ask the cache for buffers, and it's a stack so it's likely that the one you get is still in L1.  Second, Synthizer establishes a convention that all audio processing will add to the specified output buffer rather than just writing.  The naive way of doing this is one buffer per source, you fill all of those, then you loop over it and grab every source and add.  But this is one buffer per source, usually a few kdb each, and you just did the worst thing you could: read all of them start to finish, pushing everything else out of the cache.  Adding to the output buffer shifts this to some need to zero, but you've gone from O(n) buffers to roughly O(1) buffers.  Synthizer isn't perfect about this, but it's fast enough and I'll probably only finish improving it when it becomes time to optimize for the Pi or something like that. Also, pointer chasing is bad so allocate buffers inline when you can, but this is already long enough.  And also also, it doesn't matter how much memory is allocated but how much you access, so allocate all day long as long as you don't have to read all of it all the time, but going into that is also probably beyond the scope of what is quickly becoming an essay.  Suffice it to say that Synthizer does lots of arrays that are waaay oversized for what they need to be, but it's fine because you only access the front.  In particular there's a hard-coded internal limit of 16 audio channels (why 16 is another topic, but I didn't pull it out of my ass and it's not related to CPU efficiency).Third, you have to take advantage of the CPU.  This means autovectorization or hand-vectorized code, and being friendly to the branch predictor and compiler optimizations.  This gets a little bit speculative in that I haven't firmly benchma

Re: Arcane Fortune - Windows/Linux/Mac console-played grand strategy game

Darin,I wanted to drop by and aSk a quick question about city planning and such. How big is reasonable for cities? With the default scale of 5 meters per tile, it seems like the size could grow pretty rapidly. If a resource is, say, 900 meters away from your city hall, is it reasonable to exploit it by zoning from there or do you tend to build smaller? This question brought to you by logs in a forest. On a related note, I really like the zoom function. We don't usually see that in text-based games, and it's pretty cool to see how the map actually scales.

Honestly I prefer manamon's story over the second one, as well as some minor differences here and there, like the general soundtrack, the hotel, manamon market place, etc, but that's because I'm totally buyist against Manamon 2 because Manamon was my first actual audiogame. A hero's call will be number one for me, BK and AHC can be interchangable depending on what you fancy, a more action packed real time fighting game, or a laid back turn based strategy game. They both have great stories, and AHC's acting is OK, just minus some mic quality issues here and there, ahem, Alexia, and while BK comes in cheaper, either 5 or free depending, they're still much better values than Manamon imho.

Hi guys.So I created this thread for anyone who knows of some good Discord easter eggs. There are two that I know of, but I don't know how to access the one.The first one, and probably the simplest one, is how to get a startup sound. Simply locate the home option in your tree view, and click it fifteen times.Next, there's one that helps you get the rare ringtone by enabling dev mode, going into this console thing, and you can paste this command. Does anyone know what that command is or how I can enable this developer mode? Finally, what are some good easter eggs that you can think of?

As I said, I would describe the client as sort of vaguely usable, but not exactly accessible, which is an improvement on it's previous status of completely unusable at all, but not really where it needs to be, especially with the stupid match the pictures capcha crap.

Confusion with low-level audio libraries

2021-01-24 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — Developers room : Ethin via Audiogames-reflector

Confusion with low-level audio libraries

So I'm looking at audio libraries like Miniaudio or CPAL. I've always used others like FMOD/BASS because they abstract these details away from me, and so I've never really had to worry about it. However, I've always been curious how this works. In CPAL, for example, you create a host with a method like default_host. These hosts can then initialize devices with one of the methods defined in the Host trait. After that, you create streams with either build_input_stream(), build_output_stream(), build_input_stream_raw(), or build_output_stream_raw(), as defined in the Device trait. This is where my confusion arises: any of the build stream methods takes a callback to feed the audio system audio samples. I understand how this works in principal if I want to play a single sound, or if I want to play multiple sounds mixed together. But what if I have multiple "channels"? How do modern audio systems handle that kind of problem if you usually only have a single stream (at least, I think), and the stream data callback is called at some unknown interval? Is each channel just another sound to be added to the final output signal?I'm also curious about how DSPs are propagated when set on sounds, but I imagine the data method is called extremely frequently so I'm guessing that the data method contains a central algorithm for applying DSPs, mixes all the samples together and then completes. But I'm honestly curious how this actually works.

Sino-Tibetan languages, for example, would not have this concept as their characters are ideographic in nature.

@13I'm really not sure what to say to that.  It's very hard for me to phrase my response in any way that's not "learn to code and stop complaining".  Most programmers don't have that problem, and I'm going to assume that you do because the only language you know is Python, or something like that.  Even the most die-hard dynamic typing people don't use "but types are hard to read" as an argument.  I'm sure you can find someone saying it if you specifically try, but I used to also be against types, and no one anywhere on the dynamic typing side went there.I think this is a phase that newer programmers go through.  I got over it and started wanting types once my programming projects started topping 1000 lines, which really isn't that big at all.  You can only take so many "this ran for 10 minutes and then crashed because dynamic typing and I have no idea how" bugs before you're ready to scream in rage.  Doesn't matter how disciplined or good you are.  Program gets large enough, no types, that'll happen.  Hope it doesn't happen in the prod microservice at midnight...
