Re: A Little Help with my iPhone

Hi everyone. I've been perusing these forums again and thought I'd reply again. I've had my iPhone now for a little over a year, and have gotten the hang of Touch ID and entering my passcode from time to time. I've found typing in my passcode to work better overall when the thing is on a flat surface such as one of my desks. In addition, I can hear the keyboard clicks better if I use my earbuds. As far as general usage though, I love it. I've recently started using it a bit more, which I'll fully admit has become rather subjective. I'm still learning, but I honestly don't know what I'd do without my iPhone! And, to think that the experience will only get better is just...wellamazing.

Re: Monthly chat January 2017

Hi everybody and happy 2017! I realize I've not been here much as of late, but my schedule has gotten pretty full. A busy work life combined with chatty neighbors, plus some other stuff. But I'm still here, which is a good thing. So I think I'll mainly talk about my experience thus far on the Macintosh platform. As many of you know, I got my first Mac computer as a Christmas present in 2013 from my parents. It is a MacBook Air, and thus far I've been very happy with it. I don't consider myself much of a power user on here yet, but I have learned how to do a lot of things. I think Apple has done an excellent job with VoiceOver, and it's great that all these access features are built right into the operating system. I also have the latest build of Chromevox Classic on here, and really like it. I haven't yet checked out the beta version of Chromevox Next, but it sounds good. Actually I did for a few minutes, but I couldn't figure anything out.
Perhaps support for that beta on the Mac platform is still forthcoming.

Re the NFB, I believe I've mentioned this before on here but while they have done and are still doing? some good things I just think they're a bit too heavy-handed. It also seems to me that there is a double standard in the organization. Take for instance the resolution which was passed at this years National convention, which in a nutshell condemns Apple's software and hardware? testing. Yet when the iPhone first came out with VoiceOver the NFB was all praises. So which is it? Are they mad at Apple or not? I vaguely recall a similar thing happening between the NFB and Microsoft. I'm also one who doesn't like their attitude of "my way or the highway."

Re: Monthly chat September 2015

Hello everybody. In my previous reply to this topic I said I had a computer question, but then I thought I'd edit that part out because I figured I'd be able to find the answer elsewhere. Well, quite unfortunately that hasn't happened so here's the situation. I seem to have run low on disk space or memory or whichever you prefer, on my MacBook Air and I think I got some misinformation from a user on another website. I won't mention the user in question just in case they are on here, but I seriously doubt it. I recently finished importing my vast CD collection into iTunes using a SuperDrive which I got for Christmas last year. This problem seems to have started right after that, which makes me think it has something to do with the way in which I imported or something else with iTunes. That's also what somebody else told me. My memory has gone from 120.11 gb down to about 5 or so gb, and I need to install some software updates on here but can't bec
ause there's not enough room. I've checked if there's any artwork perhaps left over from these CD's, and I've done some other things but VoiceOver keeps reporting about 5 or so gb. My Mac is totally usable otherwise, which is partly why I am so concerned about this. I'm happy to contact AppleCare, but I'm pretty sure my free trial has run out and I don't want to unnecessarily incur an extra cost on my parents' credit card. I know there's a way to access some kind of terminal on here with VoiceOver, but aside from that I'm clueless as to how to fix this issue. Any help greatly appreciated. Feel free to email me privately if this is too off topic. Life has been rather chaotic lately, but I will respond as soon as possible.

Re: Monthly chat September 2015

Hi everyone. Well, I've not been active here lately but I do quite like the idea of a monthly chat. So with that in mind here's what I've been up to. My life as of late has been rather chaotic, but in a good way. It all started at the end of July of this year, when my parents moved. I got to see their new place and I like it a lot. They downsized a bit and are now in a 2-flat. I actually got to spend some quality time there, because my bathroom had to be renovated. Long story short, my bathtub shower wasn't installed properly to begin with. So I now have a stand-alone shower, as well as a new commode. The new building owners, who took over earlier this year, are very good. They're currently renovating the entire ground floor, and then they will do other stuff in our apartments. But my bathroom was given top priority, which I think was the right choice. This building was first opened in 2004, and at the time it was owned by a group of parents including mine
. They did a pretty good job, but they just didn't have enough time and resources. So they recently decided to sell the building to a company who renovates places. Thus the reason for new ownership. In addition, I went to a cousin's wedding downstate and had a fun time. I also have an off-topic computer question for y'all, but I think I'll just make that a separate post.

Re: Uncle! Yosemite it is, then.

I havent been here in a little while again, but I saw a link to this topic over on AppleVis so thought Id speak my mind. Im assuming were talking Mac vs. Windows here but I didnt really look. But anyway, I guess Im somewhere in the middle. I got my MacBook Air from my parents at the end of 2013. I had previously heard sucky things about it so I was less than enthusiastic about making the switch. However, I was pleasantly surprised. When my parents and I first brought this Mac to their house from our local Apple store and then lunch, I tried doing some things on it and I was like, This thing doesnt even work! But upon further investigation of various things on here I got to liking it a bit. Now that Ive had ample time and practice on it, I love it. I am currently running the latest build of Yosemite, and quite frankly Im not experiencing many of the bugs that others have. I really like VoiceOver. It seems to be quite
stable and good at what its supposed to do. Sure theres the fact that since its built right into the operating system, updates probably dont come as fast as some would like, but I guess thats par for the course. I have both Google Chrome and Safari on here. I could use Chrome in Mavericks but now it seems to not get along with VO for some reason. But hopefully Google will eventually come out with an update that fixes VO support. My reason for installing Chrome in the first place--other than my tutors recommendation--was that I couldnt play videos in Safari. But that changed when he installed Adobe Flash on Sunday. So now videos work great for me in Safari. Ive found email and word-processing with TextEdit to be a pleasant experience. Ill admit I havent yet done much with Pages, but that is soon to come. Ive done some stuff with iTunes, and its pretty cool but a bit confusing in some areas. I know theres a
way to play audio games on here because someone posted about it on AppleVis. I am a bit skeptical however about that part, which is one reason I want to install Windows on here. Plus, Im excited to see the changes in Windows and NVDA, and perhaps System Access if I can get another account. I do have Seroteks iBlink Radio app on here though, and really like it.

Re: State of Web Browser Accessibility

Hello. This is an excellent topic. I will start with IE and Firefox. Please note I only used Firefox on Windows so cant speak to its accessibility on other platforms. I found it to be pretty accessible for the most part, although I couldnt get some of the functions to work. These include the plugins such as Firevox. So that part I think was inaccessible for me. Additionally, it seemed I had to restart this browser when done listening to an audio file. In addition, I dont think Firefox works with System Access. Internet Exploder was also pretty good in terms of accessibility, although I havent used it for awhile so I dont know about the versions above 9.x . IE and Ff crashed on me almost all the time though. Now I will talk about Chrome and Safari. Ill start with Chrome. When I tried to use it with System Access in Windows, I couldnt get anything to work. However, it works pretty much flawlessly with both Chromevox and VoiceOver. Chromevox
seemed to crash a lot though, so I removed it from my Mac. Now to Safari, which I use in addition to Chrome. Both work extremely well with VoiceOver. I really like the extra features that Apple implemented in Safari, such as the Reader. For those of you who have never tried this feature, it lets you view only the text on a web page. It doesnt work on all websites, but its a great feature. Im up to version 7.1 of Safari, and most of the time the command to go back a page doesnt work with VoiceOver. However, there is a work-around for this which Ive found to be very good. That is, refreshing the page with Command-R if the back command wont work.

Re: guide dogs!

Ive never used a guide dog, but my late former roommate did. He only had one dog, but she worked out pretty well for him. She came from the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, and Id have to say that their emotional bond was very strong. In fact it mightve been a bit too strong some of the time. By that I mean he allowed her to roam free, and Ive been told by a few friends and neighbors that he actually let people pet her sometimes while she was on the harness despite telling me and others not to pet her. One other thing he told me was never to utter the dogs name in public, or else shed get confused. Ive since read that this is actually not true in many or all cases, so I think he was just being anal. To his credit though, he did have some rather serious health issues which prevented him from taking care of the dog a lot of the time. So our neighbors pitched in during those times. He passed away almost 3 years ago though, and for a brief
period the dog was taken to live with a visiting nurse who often came and helped out with medication. But last I heard, she was sent back to the school from which she came.

Re: screenreader landscape in 2014

I started out with JAWS for DOS and then moved to JAWS for Windows. I really liked them at the time. Obviously JAWS for DOS and Vocal-Eyes arent around anymore, or at least I dont think they are since DOS is a thing of the past and has been replaced by Windows. I liked JAWS at the time because of its extreme flexibility and ease of use. I also liked the extra features it had, such as the other voices and the ability to customize things such as the way different web elements were presented. However, in recent years it seems JAWS has gone downhill. For example, I would often help out a sister of mine who used JAWS. It seemed that we had to go through several steps in order to change 1 single setting such as the voice for a given program on her computer. Im by no means telling people to shy away from JAWS and Freedom Scientific. If JAWS is what works the best for you, then by all means that is what you should use. The last 2 screen readers I used in Windows ar
e NVDA and System Access, and I will give my reasons for doing so. Without going into the details, let me first say that I am still on my parents financial plan. But I am not living with them now. That is one of the reasons. Back in 2010 not long after my birthday when my mom was here at my apartment doing some stuff with me, I asked her to give me their card information so that I could become a paid member of System Access and registered on SAMNet. So she did that. I found Seroteks business model to be not only honest, but also right in line with my belief that everything needs to be accessible for all. They also seem to take a good approach to the competition, if you will. What I mean by this is that they dont care if users have products from other companies installed. They have had representatives from other companies on their podcasts, and they interview other vendors at the various conventions. In addition, we found a payment plan right away that suited
my needs and abilities. NVDA is of course free for all to use, so that attracted me right away. What also attracted me about NVDA was the constant updates. Hopefully I can at some point donate to the NV Access Foundation. Im now on my first Mac and really like it. I hope to eventually run Windows on here. The vast array of online resources certainly makes up for the lack of in-person Apple accessibility training where I live. Our local Apple store offers good training, but its probably not the ideal solution because of all the crowds of shoppers going in and out each day. But our experience with store employees has been very positive.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=178837#p178837

At Wanderer, glad to hear things are looking better for you. I might enroll in another Hadley course one of these days. I have taken courses from them previously, and it was a great experience. But Im still weighing my options. Regarding joke/rehab, I think Ive pretty well summed up my feelings about it here previously. I really do think its shameful that things are still this bad not only in Illinois. Perhaps somebody will come up with a way to give the entire system what it desperately needs, a major overhaul. Perhaps thatll happen one of these years, and perhaps it wont. I just find it interesting how the voc/rehab offered in some states seems to be only a bit better than in others. Or maybe it isnt like that, I dont know anymore and frankly I dont really care. But if it ends up working in your favor, that will be awesome. Getting back to passions in life, I recently took up another one of mine again. That is, reading. My fi
rst DTB player had to be sent back because of a defective battery pack, so I called and requested a replacement. It arrived within just a couple days of me phoning one of my local libraries, and I read all of 1984. I had read that book in Braille back in high school, but I kind of needed a refresher course. Now Im thinking about starting to download books from the BARD website. For those registered with the service but who havent yet been to their website, it is extremely well laid out. I just have to find out if the thumb drive that I currently have will accommodate these audio books, and if so how many can I fit on there without crashing anything.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=176391#p176391

Seems this thing is back up and running again, which is excellent. So, I wanted to come back and post my initial thoughts on another, very accessible, blogging/journaling service. I actually read about it on this very website, thanks to another user. The service is called Dream Width, and it is located at http://www.dreamwidth.org . I just signed up for a free account and have set up my journal. I really like the service for a few reasons. First off, it is very accessible at least in OS X version 10.9.3 . I havent yet tried it with Windows, so I dont know what its like on that side of the aisle. But there are over 100 themes to choose from, and you can also customize the way your journal looks. I did comment on a post written by one of the developers, and she actually responded to me the very next morning. I highly recommend this journaling service to anyone who is still in search of an accessible platform. I might integrat
