Re: accessible usenetclient

@sebby: Unfortunately, the association between file sharing and Usenet has caused nearly all universities, and the 3 major ISPs, at least in Canada, to shut off usenet access entirely.  Because the PHBs are not interested in hearing about peering arrangements, and that it is possible to run a text-only usenet server, nearly all of the educational and research communities on Usenet are dead.  I think even news.nrc.ca was shut down last year.  And yes, I endorse not letting people make file sharing choices that destroy vast, healthy, and active communities.  It looks like having to request posting access is a thing that my ISP does; I get giganews through them, and so I assumed that was a giganews thing. I *do* know that paying easynews customers have to request posting access:"Posting is disabled by default on all Easynews accounts. This is the same for newly created and accounts that have been reopened. To see if your account is eligible to ha
ve posting enabled and to have it turned on, contact support and include your username and either the last 8 digits of the card used on the account or the answer to your security question (if you supplied one) for account verification." from:http://www.easynews.com/faq.html#39URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=167116#p167116

Re: accessible usenetclient

Hang on Fastfinge, this is interesting. I've been a Giganews user on and off for quite a while now, and I've never had my posts refused. Can you point me to a policy that says a paid member can't post by default? As for a file sharing distribution protocol: while I certainly agree that the infrastructure has been hurt by binaries, any peer can choose what to carry. Giganews has quite a few ISP arrangements just to carry text groups (my provider, BT, included). Mozilla does likewise for its private-use groups. And would you really endorse not giving people choice in file sharing protocol? It's a wonder that YEnc hasn't been standardised for email yet (in a more sensible, IETF-like fashion, of course), since it'd take a lot of the harm and uncertainty out of BASE64 encoding in seven-bit email, as well as having a very high probability of actually working with most of today's eight-bit-clean MTAs. NNTP is a logical choice for any asynchronous
transfers, binary or text, where the local peer is close to the client. Email would make an even better choice, since the delivery would be asynchronous to the client itself or to many more email providers, like sendfile. But anyway, yes, I agree that given BitTorrent, NNTP is definitely redundant now. We don't need to deal with NZB, and we don't need to clutter up Usenet. But Usenet is still dying, IMO.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=167035#p167035

@DarkSide: If they come free with your ISP, they're OK. But not worth paying for. You can get better deals than that for the same money.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=167007#p167007

Re: accessible usenetclient

These days I use:http://www.newsreader.combecause they're the only service I could find with a web interface that allows reading and posting to text groups, and isn't just a glorified naked lady search engine.  Please do not! use giganews or easynews under any circumstances. By default, they don't even allow posting by new, fully paid accounts, and you have to email them if you want to be allowed to post.  So it's pretty clear that they're just a hub for piracy. Those two providers have managed to do more to destroy usenet than AOL and spammers combined.  While I don't support the MPAA/RIAA, or strict copyright laws, I would happily donate money to see the owners of those services given life+50 years in lockup.  Maybe then we could finally kill all of the alt.binary groups, bring back the glory days of Usenet, and make the people who just want to swap files use bit torrent, a prot
ocol that was designed for that.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=166821#p166821

Re: accessible usenetclient

Depends on what you want it for. If text, there are free or low-paid options like Mozzarella or Individual.net. If binaries, or just because I'm a completist, there's always Giganews. URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=166817#p166817

Re: accessible usenetclient

The few times I have wanted a usenet client, I have been really happy with MicroPlanet Gravity from:http://mpgravity.sourceforge.net/It is more functional than thunderbird, and I find it faster and less flaky. Unfortunately, It's starting to show its age, though, with no new updates since 2010. Though it does run on 64 bit Windows 7.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=166481#p166481

Nowadays UseNet is not used much for itsooriginal purpose, but is an excellent method of backup and file sharing. If what you need is useNet for messaging, I recommend Thunderbird. But if your need is a method for file sharing SABNZB is accessible and free.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=166309#p166309

Re: accessible usenetclient

Well, of course you could just use Thunderbird. The NNTP support is usable, if a bit flaky. And in an age where it seems (to me, anyway) that Usenet is more and more deprecated, I can't really recommend you go with a standalone client anyway (although I'm happy to be corrected, of course).I read news the way I read most things: via email. Mailman's NNTP gateway sucks what I need, and I process it by IMAP. But that's unidirectional.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=166305#p166305
