[Audiogames-reflector] help finding people to discuss something with

help finding people to discuss something with

Hi all,This might seem a very weird question to ask, but you'll see why in a bit.As many of you know, I'm a fan of Friendship is Magic. However, I'd like some people's help. I'm wondering how to find other fans of the show to discuss it with? For some very strange reason, I can find fans and twitter timelines for doctor who and things, but I don't really know how to approach existing mlp fans. As it stands I don't really have anyone either on twitter or in my contacts who I can discuss the show with, and it's slightly annoying me. In fact I was recently told that someone was a fan, tweeted said person and, low and behold, turns out it was a prank. Now before you guys go mad and say that this person shouldn't have pranked me, don't panic. I'm not offended by this prank. I'm just wondering how to proceed here, what to look for, how to find others to discuss the show with. I don't know whether to try joining
a site such as equestria daily or whether to try twitter. I'm not sure how welcome I'll be.While I understand there might not be many mlp fans here, could you possibly tell me how to approach things in a general sense? Say, in the past, you must have found a program and wanted to discuss it with people. How did you go about finding people to discuss it with?URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=171324#p171324

Of course, if you really are having trouble finding a group, the other option is to start one, and then (using completely legitimate channels) ask people to participate. It could really just be that this is an underserved discussion topic. URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=171340#p171340

Re: help finding people to discuss something with

I'll preface this by saying that there are different things people discuss about this show. There's talk about what happens in the show, of course, but there's also a lot of talk about the show's schedule and direction ("when does the next season start" or "how many princesses will we end up with?" are some examples) and also talk about the show's creators (what they are doing, when are they making appearances and such). Since you've already visited Equestria Daily, you're probably pretty aware of this, or at least the perspect that website projects, which is pretty widely shared. The other thing to note is that the fandom is fairly large which means there are many groups that form within it. Each with their own appeal and own rules. And yes, sometimes even some rivalry between them. But I think this is a good thing because it gives you more of a choice as to where you want to go. I'll list some of the places I know
here but I'm sure there many others. And, this is probably already obvious, but I'm going to state the obvious a lot. Like right now. But that's because I don't know where you've been up to now.Ok, two more notes before I get down to the list. To answer your post in the other thread, Aaron, which I think these places are much nicer than the rest of the internet, I don't think they avoid misconceptions entirely. So if you've met people who thought that blind people can't use a computer, I think the truth is you'll still meet them there. However, since they may be fending stigmata of their own, they may be more willing to listen once you've explained. But from the get go, I think its inevitable that a number of participants think that way. Finally, my opinion will obviously seep through my description so I won't
try to hold back much. But just because I don't like some aspect of some site or other, it doesn't mean that you won't. And if joining them is what makes you happy and is what you were looking for, by all means do it! I'm just one person with one opinion after all.Last thing before the list: Some of these places may also contain spoilers for future episode. I don't know if that kind of thing bothers you or not.List of pony places:1. Equestria Daily.Description: The most popular news site around. Shapes mainstream fandom opinions by its sheer popularity. with searching for only accessible stuff. Canternet.Description: This is an IRC network formed by fans. Has quite a few large channels. Although I've had very little contact, I think this might be a good choice to start just because people are somewhat forced to chat in text here. A lot of the other websites I'll mention in the list have a channel on here (such as #EquestriaDaily, #ponychan)Accessibility: I would think it is good if you have a good IRC client.Userbase: I haven't been here often enough to know.Accessibility: Heavy use of images for emotes and images in signatures. But being an imageboard, that's a forum where each post can have an image displayed prominently alongside the text (or possibly no text at all) so obviously the informations from those images will be missed (they don't always have indicative filenames).Userbase: Having been there since the beginning, it has a fairly large number of users. Users and level of discourse vary greatly depending the "board" (a.k.a. subforum) you frequent. /pony/ is the main board for discussing the show but move very quickly (at least for me). So there may be far too many new posts that can be easily missed while you'r

Re: help finding people to discuss something with

@cantorlot: Just as a gentle FYI, in case you didn't know, you meant "stigma", not "stigmata". I know lots of people get those words confused, but they mean really different things; stigmata means the bloody wounds that some Christians claim to manifest miraculously, in the places where the nails pierced the hands and feet of Jesus when he was crucified.  Stigma means a mark of shame.  So unless the MLP fandom is stranger than I ever imagined, the word you want is stigma.  Although, someone *did* write that Cupcakes fanfic, so a community devoted to pony crucifixion wouldn't really surprise me, unfortunately.  Also, there is this:http://www.fimfiction.net/story/37680/f … with-jesusso apparently Fluttershy and Jesus do hang in the same circles. Actually, Jesus kind of shows up surprisingly often in Equestria:http://www.fimfiction.net/story/18724/1 … chapter-18Why on earth did I ever Google for this?  Anyway, I had a point to posting, other than that nonsense.  What was...oh yeah!  Equestria Daily has some accessibility problems that might prevent you from participating: they use intense debate for there comments, and that system will often make you fill out a CAPTCHA before the comment will post, and WebVisum can't always solve it.  I only discovered that this morning, when I went to comment on the post I linked to in the other topic with the transcripts, to ask if anyone was going to do the new seasons. If I can get transcripts up to s4, I'll probably just give up and watch the show already. So I just emailed the address listed in the file instead.  Also, the links in the menu don't quite open right. For example, if you click community, the community links won't show up to NVDA as underneath the community link; you kind of have to go down a little bit and hunt for the new links. Also, clicking chat caused my Firefox to crash completely, so don't do that.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=173171#p173171

Re: help finding people to discuss something with

I'll finish this list first and then answer.4. The Round Stable Description: Forums created by members of the Something Awful website. Has a front page with news for the last two years. Offers an alternative perspective that also less focused on fan creations. It has rather eloquent creator and so attracted similar members. Eloquent doesn't mean already to the point though. Sometimes criticised for its stricter rules.Accessibility: There's relatively heavy use of images in user profiles and signatures. Discussions have an average amount of emoticons, which while tagged by name, are not always used in their original context so it could get confusing. Some threads have large text walls so it may be better to start there. Some threads are heavy in linked images.Userbase: Smaller than the other places but still with many users, I believe.5. Sub
reddit /r/mylittleponyDescription: A link aggregator, meaning that it contains a bunch of user submitted links to other sites that are sorted by user votes (in some sense). Sometimes considered an art dump by others due to the large number of images links to fan created drawings. Also a bit hard to socialise due to its format.Accessibility: Does have discussions sometimes, especially when new episodes airs. Its possible to comment on all the links. Comments sometimes contains emoticon images.Userbase: 63627 users with 186 active right now. Pretty nice moderators in my humble opinion although its mostly a hands-off site that runs on its own.6. Rainbow Dash NetworkDescription: A twitter-like socialising site (1000 character limit). I've never used it so can't say much more.Accessibility: Seems pretty going, being more or less all text, except for picture.Userbase: There seems to be a good nu
mber of users. However, it doesn't seem to be mentioned so prominently on other sites anymore. I don't know why.7. Derpy Hooves newsDescription: Perhaps the second biggest news site, although still not too well known I believe. It is also uncensored, although not prominently so (Equestria Daily doesn't feature articles unsafe for the young-uhns). Digs a bit deeper into rumours and stories.Accessibility: Nothing particularly noticeable for a news site (obviously pretty visual-heavy).Userbase: Being less popular, there are much fewer comments so its hard to tell except for the editorial team, which seems good to me.8. Equestria GamingDescription: Pony themed games and reviews. Still quite unknown I believe but might be a good place to find links to other things or projects. ( is not mentioned there; I haven't tried submitting it.)Accessi
bility: The site itself is like any news site but most games are pretty bad with accessibility I think.Userbase: Same are Derpy Hooves news. Few comments so its hard to tell.9. meDescript - Wait! I'm not a website! But just wanted to answer about contact information at such. My e-mail iscantorlot at-sign derpymail dot org(I spelled it out to avoid spam but this makes it not possible to copy and paste.) I don't have a twitter account though. Unfortunately, I tend to reply rather slowly to e-mail because of lack of time. But go ahead and e-mail me anytime!I'm avoiding Skype to keep my anonymity. Most fans are not this crazy though. So I'm sure you can find a Skype group if you chat with them long enough. I feel voice gives away too much information, that's all (I didn't credit myself in-game).URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=173236#p173236

Re: help finding people to discuss something with

@aaron: Equestria Daily is perfect for that kind of thing then. I think the /r/mylittlepony subreddit tends to get these news a tad earlier though. But has the accessibility issue mentioned (though your could sift through titles and only look at self posts or posts with lots of comments). Oh and the show creators tweet teasers sometimes. I'll edit this post with their twitter account when I find them.I didn't realize IRC wasn't easy to setup, being more or less entirely text based. Quite honestly, I'm not sure how much more a dedicated IRC client would do.@fastfinge: That's for finding Jesus for me. That's fixed now. Although the Wikipedia disambiguation page suggests that stigmata is also the plural of stigma? What? This is more confusing than I though. (The stigmata pa
ge talked about wounds like you said.)And now you know I never commented on Equestria Daily. I know they changed their commenting system a few times. I guess its Intense Debate now. E-mail is probably the better choice here anyways. Did you get a reply? It may otherwise be possible to incite people to write them given the size of the fandom and the large number of fans looking to contribute but generally don't know how. Maybe even have a narrator to make like DV.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=173252#p173252

Re: help finding people to discuss something with

@cantorlot: No, I never got a reply. Interesting idea about having a narrator like DV, and I'm sure some people would want that. Personally, I would rather read transcripts while listening to the original show than listen to the show with DV.  Because in DV, the narrator only has 2 or 3 seconds where people aren't talking to describe things.  But in a transcript, the transcriber can be as descriptive as he wants: "(On the second half of this, the clouds fade away and others slide out of view to expose the landscape. A town can be seen near a meandering stream, with a second one—made of clouds and rainbows—floating near it and higher than the peak of a nearby mountain. A city of white and gold projects from the nearly-vertical precipice. Zoom in on this, then cut to a pair of winged unicorns standing back to back on a cloud; the left one is white, with a pink mane and long tail, while the other is dark blue with a lighter blue mane/tail. Tilt up slowly.)" There is just no way that DV could fit that huge chunk of description in between the first two spoken lines of the show.  Though I might be more comfortable with this, because I have taken some television and film classes, so I am aware of the meanings of things like cut, pan, zoom, tilt, swipe, whip, etc. I can imagine that people who haven't handled a camera might be a little lost in a screenplay or transcript.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=173291#p173291

Re: help finding people to discuss something with

New episode day for the interested! (likely no transcript of any sort at the moment though...)@fastfinge: That exact thought crossed my mind! Transcripts would probably bug me because its not the character's voices but I don't know what your setup is (to have both the transcript and listen to the show at the same time). Its possibly also easier to find people to write transcripts (narrators would likely have had to read from a transcript anyway).A side remark: Someone sighted watching the show is likely to miss most of what's in that description or only be left with a vague impression of it. It just happens too fast. I mean the background music that we hear during those few second could be given an extensive description as well. Although some of the visuals are much more central. The central parts and ideas can probably be describe more briefly.Or maybe you could have different voices talking at differen
t distances depending on how prominent it is? I wonder if it'd be possible to get that to even work though. Even in the best case, we'd still be funneling two sources of information (audio and visual) into a single one (audio only). This reminds me that I wanted to say something else about this "background ponies" phenomenon (TV Tropes article on the topic Warning: website that is potentially a huge time sink). If someone doesn't interact with the fan community, it is possible and I'd say even very likely to watch the entire show without being able to distinguish between the background characters, much less have names for them. So to some extent, that's pretty equal footing or even a bit of an advantage for the one with the transcript (they are called by name there despite having unremarkable visuals). (Of course, there's the eventual problem when they point out th
at such and such can be seen for half a second sitting awkwardly way over there in the background while some much more noticeable thing is happening in the foreground (I think Fluttershy running around in this case?).)URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=173321#p173321

Re: help finding people to discuss something with

@cantorlot: I put whatever I am watching on netflix via my Apple TV for the audio, and read the transcript on a braille display connected to my laptop. So when I want to do a close-reading of something in the transcript, I can use the apple TV remote to pause the show for a sec, and then easily unpause it. I generally pause for 10 or 15 seconds about once a minute. If the transcript is unclear about something, or I get curious about a particular thing (Where have I heard that voice before? Where was that scene filmed?) I will sometimes hit a wiki or fansite to look something up real quick, adding another 30 seconds or so on pause. A half hour show generally takes me from 45 minutes to an hour to listen to. When I watch a TV show with friends, I will usually listen to it my way beforehand if I know what we're going to watch, or if I don't, I'll listen to it again myself later.  I really, really don't see how multiple voices could work. I can listen to up to
three voices speaking at once and understand them, but I find it extremely stressful.  I don't know how well those transcripts do about not revealing information before the writers intended, because I haven't watched the show yet, but I do agree that sometimes is a problem. But IMHO, as you can probably tell, I would far rather too much information than too little.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=173340#p173340

I keep forgetting to mention this here. My Litte Investigations, which is a fairly popular project was recently released and is fully voiced. Unfortunately the interface is custom made and entirely mouse driven. But since they used an open format for their files, it's plausible to it turn into some kind of interactive fiction with the same resources. The moving around in this game isn't actually all that important. Here's the only playthrough I found that doesn't talk over the game audio (Youtube video). You can play this video up to 9 minutes in without spoiling anything (up to then, the game only involves clicking when a character stops talking to advance the dialogue).Last line before gameplay starts: Twilight: "Don't worry Rarity, I'll get to the bottom of this before the other investigation team even gets here."URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=173568#p173568

This has nothing to do with the thread up to this point, but I just had to share!  Last night, I had the strangest My Little Pony related dream, and woke up to write a bit of it, as I usually do.  I have kept a dream journal for about 13 years now, and am to the point where I remember to write about almost all of my dreams. Apparently, my brain loves crack fanfic so much that it's now generating it for me while I sleep.  First, some background. I sleep with my laptop next to my bed, so often, when I am having trouble sleeping, or wake up in the middle of the night, I roll over, put my headphones on, and resume playing whatever I was listening to before I fell asleep.  Recently, this has been the dragnet old time radio show.  So, last night, I was wide awake...or thought I was..., rolled over, put on the headphones, and hit play. Only to hear:This is ECB, the equestrian broadcasting company. {the three dong dong dong chimes. First bar of t

You're assigned to robbery detail. A gang of ponies has been steeling baked goods. Evidence points to a well-oiled criminal organization. Your job: cook them. {final bars of theme music} It was Sunday July third. It was raining in ponyville and we were working the night watch in robbery detail. My partner's Applebloom. The boss is princess Celestia.  My name's Scootaloo.  We were on our way out of the office and it was 9:57 PM when we got to sugarcube corner.  Unfortunately, that was all of the dream I bothered to write down at the time. I have vague  memories involving Twilight Sparkle getting arrested, and Rainbow Dash fighting an army of eighteen Pegasus thieves, and...something about Scootaloo's scooter bursting into flames after a b
ombing attempt because she was getting too close to the truth?  Also, there was a marshmallow laser battling Pinkie's party cannon in defence of poundcake at some point for...some reason.  The only other thing I thought was important enough to write down was this:Starring Emma Stone as the voice of Scootaloo, Yeardley Smith as Applebloom, Kristin Chenoweth as Pinkie Pie, Sarah Silverman as Rainbow Dash, India Fisher as Rarity, Idina Menzel as Fluttershy, and Sarah Michelle Gellar as Twilight Sparkle.  So, yeah. Apparently my brain can tell me the most epic story of utter epicness in the history of epic things, and all I really want to do when I'm half asleep is dork out about voice actresses.  Go, sleepy me! LOLEdit: I lay in my bed again, because sometimes that helps me remember bits I forgot to write down.  So...it turned out Twilight was the one steeling the baked goods, because she thought if she could only eat enou
gh blueberries, she would turn blue. No, I don't remember why she wanted to turn blue.  But unfortunately Fluttershy caught her setting fire to Scootaloo's scooter with her horn, and snitched. So Twilight kidnapped Poundcake and was holding him hostage in Sugarcube Corner to negotiate safe passage out of Equestria. She was also demanding 80 pounds of blueberries for the journey.  And every time Scootaloo got too close, Twilight was taking pot shots at her with a magically powered marshmallow laser that she had somehow bolted onto her horn. I mean, like, with actual metal bolts. Based on the sounds, it apparently hurt. A lot.  There were a lot more things, I'm sure, and I'm sure the bits I'm forgetting made that all make more sense. Well, no. I'm not. Why did I bother straining my brain trying to remember this in the first place? Gah!URL: http://forum.audiogames.

Re: help finding people to discuss something with

For those who want it, I converted all of the existing transcripts to plain text format, to make them easier to deal with. You can find them on sendspace here:https://www.sendspace.com/folder/kh6m1cNote that this is still uploading.  The folder is like 3.65 GB, so it could take a while. Also included are vocal-only audio versions of each episode. I'm currently watching MLP via netflix, so I have no idea if those are useful or not. Once my torrent finishes, I'll do real full-audio rips for everyone who doesn't need the video.  But the torrent is going to take 3 weeks, so don't hold your breath. Unless someone can tell me how to easily rip the audio out of Netflix? I have send space pro, so that folder isn't going anywhere, and I'll keep it up to date. So feel free to share and enjoy.  Now, back to my Marathon!URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=173773#p173773

Yay! Happy watching then! Its a bit funny that you dreamed of fanfic before you watched the series. Although in the early fandom, I read stories of people going to meetups having never watched the show just because they liked the people. I don't know if they are true but just the idea is kind of funny. To each their own!I think the mobile version of Google docs is more text friendly (example: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1T_9 … ic?pli=1). You get this if you put mobilebasic instead of edit in the url. I actually set my browser to send a phone's user agent sometimes and this makes a lot of websites load faster and text friendly!Oh, I haven't checked if they are the same as yours but there are voice only audio of episodes here.P.S., I'll be away for a couple of weeks. Re: help finding people to discuss something with

@aaron: Hmmm.  Actually, I have a lot of them.  First off, I was incredibly glad to have the transcripts. While I love the voice acting on the show, I am a lot less thrilled by the sound design.  This might be because this is only the third animated show I've ever watched in my life, as I generally avoid cartoons of any kind.  But...I'm sorry...that isn't what a Pegasus in flight sounds like!  The flight sounds they use for Rainbow Dash don't make me think flight, they make me think dishwasher from the 25th century having an accident.  That's the worst example, but I find all of the other sounds equally bad.  However, the rest of the show, plus just ignoring the sound design because I don't need to listen carefully to follow along thanks to the transcript, meant it only really bothered me for about half of the first episode and then I mostly got over it.  Second off, I am kind of surprised how much I *do!
 * love the voice acting.  Every single character sounds completely and totally different from the voices I was hearing in my head from fanfic.  Being the kind of person I am, I am shocked at how totally fine I am with that.  Normally, I get a set idea of how things should be, and cling to it pretty tightly.  But the actual MLP voices sound even more like the right voices for those characters than the voices I was imagining for them.  So, who ever was in charge of casting has mad skills to make it that satisfying.  Now that I've dealt with the technical stuff, I can move on to the plot.  I don't know if you're a Piers Anthony fan or not, but Equestria feels so much like xanth without the sex, and a few less puns, and a lot more ponies, it's astonishing!  When I was watching Dragonshy, I could have sworn that exact plot happened in Xanth.  But I looked through my _guide to xanth_ and the xanth concordance, and it
turns out it didn't.  It just felt super xanthian.  The starting two-parter episode also felt like something that could have happened in xanth: a young creature is sent out on a quest to do x by the all knowing magician, and along the way meets a group of companions, and discovers the things that were really important all along.  At the end, just when everything seems lost, the all-knowing magician tells her that she was meant to discover those things from the start, and all is well.  Even the dialogue feels like something Piers Anthony might have written for his child characters.  I remember actually saying out loud at the end of part 2: "My God, this is early xanth again."  Also, MLP uses similar word gags that don't really affect the plot much, but are funny, and encourage a love of words and language, while building character.  Also also, a lot of the animation gags (hearts in people's eyes, seeing stars, etc) are thing
s that absolutely can and do happen in xanth.  The things that are important in MLP are really similar to the values that are important in Xanth.  Xanth and MLP are both interested in clothing only for appearance sake, otherwise being fine with nudity. Xanth even has a lot of equines in it: centaurs, flying centaurs, unicorns, ghost horses, alicorns, etc.  They even seem to have similar ideas about exactly what it should mean to be royalty.  The reason I am harping on this so much is because the xanth books were the books of my childhood.  I grew up reading, re-reading, and otherwise loving the hell out of them.  But as I grew up, I got more and more uncomfortable with the side elements of xanth: strange sex, female objectification, etc.  Also, as xanth went into its 30th book, the plots got tired, and the characters got warn.  I mostly convinced myself that it was because I'm just too old to enjoy new xanth books now, not because Piers A
nthony jumped the shark long ago.  And then I finally watched My Little Pony.  This is almost exactly how it felt, to be 11 years old, and curled up with _Aisle of View_ or _Ogre Ogre_, but distilled into half an hour.  And you know what? I'm still not too old.  I didn't do all of the awful growing up that I was kind of afraid I had gone and done.  Sure, I'm more aware of things now, so I can see the holes that Xanth had that I couldn't see when I was 11.  But My Little Pony doesn't have most of those pitfalls.  It's just silly little adventure stories, with a lesson at the end, where nothing really horrible ever actually happens.  I don't mean that in a demeaning way, at all.  I lived for exactly those kind of stories as a teenager.  But I lost them somewhere during university, and could never quite reconnect with my favourite characters and stories.  But finally, in Friendship is Magic, I
9;ve found them again.  And that's what kept me up all night.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=174022#p174022
