Bavisoft games.

Hi guys, I'm trying to locate the audio reviews of Chillingham and Grisley Gultch by Bavisoft.  The links on the audiogames.net site are broken obviously because Bavisoft have sesed to exist, but I'd still like to hear those audio reviews if possible.  I was wondering if anyone has them if they could perhaps dropbox them here?  I just wanted to hear them for old time's sake.  Many thanks from Lori.

Very strange, since on my machine, it's extremely consistent, task manager=GG crash. I'm honestly surprised they run today, because Grizzly Gulch was designed to run under windows 95/98/2000. Actually NT was mentioned, so that might be why it works. That's one thing Microsoft seems to do well on, ensuring backwards compatibility with older software.

Re: Bavisoft games.

@harrylst I believe your fight scenes issue could be resolved by a small cheat in the game itself. Go into the town, and press f11 and f12 to decrease and increase the fighting speed. Maximum you can go is 12, though for later scenes I'd recommend about 4 or 5. Oh, and f10 resets it to 0, and I'm not sure what f9 does. Personally, I feel this actually should have been documented, because it's not really a cheat, but more of a way to make the game more difficult.

For what my opinion is worth I think people should let the Bavisoft topic drop as well. They haven't been active for years, have not actively been active on this or any other forum, and their site is dead. People might as well just consider them gone, ancient history, and move on. Bavisoft have, for all intents and purposesdisappeared. Recently thanks to some actions taken by one of the members here, the site had ben removed by the host as you could still place orders, but all emails bounced and most people didn't get what they paid for.As far as sharing, the games haven't been declared as Abandonware, but Dark decided that you can in fact post links to them. He also modified the database entries to tell people that you shouldn't place order for now. As a result, several people have mirrored both Grizzly Gulch and Chilling ham, but I don't remember any link addresses. Well, the problem is because Bavisoft haven't released them as abandonware it is still technically illegal to copy, share, and redistribute those games. Now, as Bavisoft no longer seems to be monitoring this forum etc my guess is if someone did decide to share and pass the games around Bavisoft wouldn't do anything about it. Not only that but before when someone suggested that the games be shared and made abandonware Bavisoft's only response was a simple please do not do this. My guess is even if they did decide to try a comeback with a new title someday (Chillingham 2 anyone?) they would fail miserably simply because they've lost the community's respect and trust in the last eight years since Chillingham was released.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=146491#p146491

Re: future of Bavisoft games

Actually Bryan, that "please don't distribute our games" was now four years ago, and we've not heard a peep from them sinse. While I don't generally go in for redistributing material just because people want to, Bavisoft is something of a special case due to the games high rate of unavailability, or even compatibility with modern operating systems. If they ever did reappear, I'd be willing to give them a chance, but it seems we're more likely to see a living Tyranosaurus rex than Chillingham 2.Frankly I don't really see much point in discussing bavisoft anymore. If people want to distribute the games, fair enough until bavisoft says otherwise, accept they don't. after all, other companies are very much doing better work in the same line, especially for the iphone, look at the recent signus audio drama or inquisitor (both of which i do need to play).URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=146494#p146494

Nobody really knows what happened to them, but I assume the manager of the team has lost the interest of the project, and slowly lost the contact to all the people who were involved as well. the strange thing is that nobody seems to know some of those people, wich I find pretty strange. I mean, why should they be interested in making games for blind if they don't know any blind people? URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=146581#p146581

Re: future of Bavisoft games

Although it is "technically" against the law, we do it because we feel that we are not in much danger of getting caught.  Bavisoft has been dead for 8 years, have made no word about their games, and so we can assume they are dead.  (Although I did spend a month in Marburg and I made a comment like this about something else, and was repremanded so I think restrictions are a lot tighter over there) But that's beside the point, the point is that basically we 99.% chance won't be caught and new gamers can still enjoy the games this way.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=146615#p146615

Re: future of Bavisoft games

Paddy bavisoft posting in end of 2012? not last I heard, the last I've heard from them was in august of 2009, (I believe there's still a topic in the ag news room about it). I agree with sebby and arq that the law is likely against this, but frankly copywrite law isn't a moral law in most cases, indeed it's usually used within our society to provide money for the fat cat distributor and publishers, rather than anything to do with protecting ideas. The "no cracks or sharing commercial games" rule on this board has nothing to do with law, and everything to do with basic ethics and a desire to support our developers. On that basis, well Bavisoft are hardly around to support anymore, furthermore, unlike say dan zingaro, they haven't shown any decency towards their previous customers what with all the missed orders etc. I have personally spent not a little time and effort verrifying this fact, including E-mailing on several o
ccasions, placing warnings on the website topics, and even tracking down their phone number in new york and attempting to ring them! all of these turned up a blank (the phone number gave no answer).Of course, if bavisoft turned up tomorrow and started selling updated versions of their games, well I'd be the first o to support them, and would ask Harielst and anyone else to take links like the above down, but the longer time passes, the less likely  that seems. Myself, I just recommend people download the games and give them a try, then, move on to other stuff, after all it looks like interactive audio adventure dramas are going to be a thing on the Iphone.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=146888#p146888

I tried it out on my IPhone 3gs and was disappointed, because some time later, the game suddenly shut down. I need to try this out on my IPhone 4s by a chance.Chillingham or Grizzly Gulch on the IPHone, this would be great! You only need left/right gestures, as well as up/down and of course a help gesture, maybe a two-fingers tap would do it.Maybe they would have done that, if devices like IPhones became available or effordable. They did a real great job with both games, especially because games in 2000 were mostly dos or text based games I think. I don't want to tell anything wrong, but we haven't got much audiogames in 2000 which have been that amazingly made.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=146951#p146951

I really enjoyed chillingham for the whacky acting and puzzles, well at least until I finished the thing on the same evening I bought it, and found the ending was completely, utterly and absolutely unresolved! you found out dam all about what was happening in Chillingham, and barely even saw your friend. not to mention the game involved far too much trecking back and forth getting those blasted bugs! When I listened to the bank and salon preview, I thought it's just a game where you move through the town and do things like going into the salon and fighting bank robbers. But in 2009 I would have everything to get these games! @BavisoftYou did a great job with both of your games, and I really like them. I'm not sure myself, Gg's lack of actual plot was sort of annoying, I also would have liked a bit more by way of environments in the game. Grizly had the environments, a lot more acting and some of the puzzles were interesting, (the witches made me laugh when they attacked), but it has far less replay value than grizly, since at least with grizly you can bang the speed up and play as an arcade action game, also the inconclusive plot and taling off in the middle with all that insect gathering was irritating.Had bavisoft continued it's likely chillingham 2 would've combined the best of both, but sadly not.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147088#p147088<

Yeah. Perhaps the town isn't a very ideal place, or perhaps Bavisoft just did weird things with their loops, which was particularly noticeable in Chillingham. I take your point about the variation in Chillingham, but there was definitely something very cosy and cool about the saloon in GG, I think. Perhaps that's what it comes down to. Yep I noticed the looping issue, but at the same time I liked the idea that there were swamps, forests as well as buildings like the church, library etc, it gave a little more in way of diversity than just a saloon and some gun fightts interspursed with some rather synthy music for atmosphere. The saloon was done well though, and I like the diversity of games, though interestingly enough this is one thing which perhaps is replicated in the silver dollar game by draconis, which obviously has the saloon with some bar mini games, but not the rest of it.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147098#p147098

Yeah, GG's getting boring after playing it for the third time in a week. I only play it a few times in a year, but not more than once in a month. In my opinion, Chillingham is indeed better than grizzly, but both games are different. In GG you just need to fight robbers, thieves and raddlers. In Chillingham you have a background storyline which you are playing. But as i'm not familiar with "The wizard of oz", I for example didn't know that water baloons thing, but I would have tried it anyway if I haven't listened to the review of Kelly Sapergia. There are indeed some spoilers in the game, but the TDLGames-Review doesn't exist anymore, as far as I know.It took more than a week till I finally finished the game, and I found a walkthrough but I only read the walkthrough after I gave the potion to old Bill. And when I needed more help, I read the next line of the walkthrough. However, I found some puzzles really, really difficul

I noticed myself that without the patch, the game hung up on gunfights and became unplayable.@Pavy, yep, not getting puzzles due to english makes sense, and I admit the water baloons thing is a little obscure if you don't know the wizard of oz, though in fairness to bavisoft I will sayeven in England the original wizard of oz is sort of as much known as hansel and grettle,  cindarella or most any fairy tale, indeed since it gets included in compilations of kids fairy tales (admittedly usually in a very abridged form), it's likely even more well known than something like peter pan or  pinokio, since even children who don't read will have likely seen a tv adaptation of it at some point. Then again since I heard kelly sepergia's review first I'm likely not really in a position to say (I listened to the review before  I decided to buy the game). The only puzzle I got really stuck on
in chillingham was how to repare the church organ, since I assumed you had to use the lose key on it some how, though I do wonder if I hadn't heard Kelly's review whether I would've known to keep checking the random books in the library multiple times for an item. You also  seem to have played gg much more than me.  I believe  even thought I've owned it now for nearly 7 years, I have played through it only about five or six times at most, and chillingham I know I've played only four.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147577#p147577

Re: future of Bavisoft games

I agree with Bryan. The hermit's game was a little silly, but the hole game was a little silly really, having to scare the lady off playing an organ with a frog? not exactly a true horror game in the way that descent into madness was.I also agree with Bryan about the bugs, that really felt tacked on just because they ran out of ideas of how to get those two items, and I really didn't appreciate the ending, indeed even at the time I remember being quite disappointed when I got to the manner and just opened the  gate for the  game to finish so abruptly, at least some explanation would've been nice rather than a vague ihint about a lord chillingham. I  suppose it wouldn't have mattered if there had ever been a chillingham 2, and having a haunted house as the setting would've been a logical progression, but as it is the hole thing feels a little flat.It does make me wonder though how long it'll be before before som
eone tries a full horror themed adventure game perhaps for the iphone, something like the alone in the dark series, that would be pretty awsome.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=148108#p148108

Re: future of Bavisoft games

Maybe, but as far as I am concerned it would be better to develop something completely new with its own back story, etc than to come out with Chillingham 2, and basically complete what I always thought of as a mediocre game at best. Chillingham was so-so, but  really I didn't think much of it.Like many on here I didn't like the bug catching part at all. I found it a bit boring, and I about gave upon the game then and there. I would have had I known the game had such a stupid ending and left me hanging wondering what happened next. So I don't think it is worth anyone's time or energy continuing that game beyond its uneventful conclusion.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=148170#p148170

We ought to do a game like the old Maniac Mansion series. Those were some highly amusing, albeit sadly inaccessible, titles from Lucas Arts. It had some RPG elements, namely controlling a small party of characters, combined with point and click adventure elements like what Chillingham used.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=148201#p148201

Re: future of Bavisoft games

I don't know about the maniac mantion games bryan, though they sound interesting and I do know lucas arts were famous for writing their point and click adventures. IN terms of horror, I was always impressed by the broken sword games which I played through with a friend of mine on the playstation, sort of horror with demons, monsters and nasty cults meets an indiana jones style plot about lost tombs, ancient aztec articfacts etc. The game's setting was nice too since you start out with an explosion in paris, then followed the trail of clues to different locations around the world such as  turkey, south america and ireland.Regarding a chillingham 2 as a community project, I agree with Tom. while a second game from bavisoft would've been nice, it wasn't such! a burning question that I think there really needs to be one, indeed I'd rather see a propper horror game with actual horrible deaths etc, not a comedy afair like chillingham, and I
39;m fairly sure we will on the iphone at some point in the near future. @Sebby I agree on memory being the main challenge in chillingham rather than the actual logic to complete puzzles, but this for me was why the game was too easy. I've never really found simon style games that difficult.Of course, this is a personal thing, but really it would've been better had the game tested a number of the players' abilities, such as logical thinking, puzzle solving skills, code breaking etc as many of the graphical adventures do. Take for instance the insult sword fight in secret of monkey island. You need to defeat several pirates and then the sword master at sword fighting, which is done by choosing the correct responses to their insults. With the pirates, this is to an extent a matter of trial and error, although many of the insults are quite logical, for instance When a pirate says "soon my handkerchief will mop up your
blood" the response is "so you got that job as janneter after all" when however you fight the sword master, her insults are subtly different meaning you need to think more carefully about the responses. For example she says: "My name is feared in every dirty corner of this island" With the same response "so you got that job as janeter after all" Yes, this is all possible with trial and error or simple learning, however it's much better if you can think logically about what response sutes what insult and therefore is a rather fun and challenging puzzle, and yes, to anyone who has played kingdom of loathing, the insult contest there is a direct homage to this part of Monkey island, and even has some of the same insults. This is what I mean by good puzzles, puzzles that are interesting to figure out and require logic and good analytic skills, that aren't based just upon a crazy system of verb guessing l
ike if games, or a simple hear it and remember like chillingham, and which actually give you some entertainment too. Btw, how does inquisitor shape up on these lines? I'd be very interested to know as I am quite tempted to buy the game.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=148226#p148226

The disabling of Bavisoft is actually done by the .com registry at the request of the registrar. I simply checked the whois information for Bavisoft to find the name servers that used to be delegated, and then queried them for the addresses of bavisoft.com and www.bavisoft.com, which I then stuck into my hosts file. Re: future of Bavisoft games

To answer the question more fully about what happens after Murderin'' Sam, here's what happens. As was already said, you immediately get sent out to get Skeeter, the black jack dealer. If you succeed, the game abruptly ends. If you fail, you get sent back to the marshall's office to try again. You don't have to go get Murderin' Sam all over again if you've already succeeded in doing so. However, there is no way you're keeping the $5000 reward. After the failed attempt to get Skeeter, the marshall will ask if you want to try again, and you can say no and go play in the salloon till you're ready. When you next go to the marshall's office, you're immediately on your way to Skeeter's without a chance to accept or refuse. The GG salloon is my favorite place in a game to just go hang out when I want to do something mindless though I'm not usually doing the shell game. LOL! I usually have a player that never fights bad
guys besides those in the bank, and I love shooting innocents at times. LOL! Do note that, if you're going to shoot innocents, don't have any money in your bank account, or Cecil will take it in revenge. LOL! GG was the first game I bought, and I'll always have a huge nostalgic soft spot for it.As for Chillingham, I enjoyed all except the multiple bug trips. That got way too repetitive, and I could have done without half of those. I enjoyed the other puzzles, but not the ending. Catching that damned frog! LOL!The way back machine is hit and miss on whether files can be downloaded. Sometimes you can, some game executibles I've gotten from there, but not most audio files I've tried. Probably a perceived copyright issue there, but just a guess.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=162912#p162912
