Cthulhu Mud

Cthulhu Mud

This Mud is based on the Cthulhu mythos started by H.P. Lovecraft's writing.  It involves a lot of hack-and-slash, but it's unique in the detail of the game locations.  For example, if you're playing a human character and you start out at Miskatonic University, you walk all around the town of Arkham Massachusetts, and buy food at the grocery store, sell goods at shops, etc.  You can fight, do magic, play music, read, study, forge weapons and armor, build your character however you want.  Another thing that intrigued me is the near-limitless combination of skills you can learn - everything from martial arts, to ancient History, to the lost language of Atlantis.I'm not sure how it all comes together, because I've just started on it, but the Mud appears to be almost deserted.  I just wondered if anyone else played. If this interests you, the connect info is;cthulhumud.comport 8889If anyone does play or h
as played in the past, can you give me a hint as to where to find better weapons and armor in Arkham?  I find it easily on other planets and in the dreamlands, but not in Arkham.

Moderation! Sinse I don't believe this mud has been discussed before I'll move this topic to new releases which should be good for getting more players too.

Re: Cthulhu Mud

Thanks for posting, Dark.  When I couldn't find the topic, I was beginning to think it either hadn't posted, or that I posted it in the wrong section. The Mud is pretty old, but maybe it just flew beneath the radar.  It has a lot of the things I like - lots of exploration, different things to learn rather than just combat, individual gameplay as opposed to mandatory role playing, and I think there may even be some crafting.I'm no expert by any definition, but if anyone gets stuck in the early levels, I might be able to help, so feel free to ask questions on this thread.

Re: Cthulhu Mud

I meant to add this link at the top of the thread, but here is the website with tons of help files for the Mud.They mention a forum, but when I looked at it, it's as if somebody went through and deleted every topic in there except for spam! But this site is worth its weight in gold for the guides and tutorials, and they even give a few location guides with text directions instead of maps.http://www.cthulhumud.com/index.htm

Re: Cthulhu Mud

Greetings Mirage.I did try a human hoodlem out but realized that the yith although weak at first, have almost limitless potential. I'm currently playing one now and it's fun to get your controling mob to fight another and return to your own body. Works better than charm to.Kind regards, Amin Abdullah.

Re: Cthulhu Mud

I haven't tried a Yith yet, because I heard they were so difficult to play.  I have a couple of humans, one in Miskatonic University, and one in Ulthar, and then I also have a mi-go.  I tried playing a zoog, but that grossed me out because they eat maggots.  BLEH. :-) Plus they hate cats, so that one was a no-go.I may give Yith a try soon though.

Re: Cthulhu Mud

I love this game. I started playing it a year or so ago. My haracter is pretty high level now but I don't get a chance to go on often. I usually have phases with MUDs so that I play them hard for a couple of months then move on to something else until my interest is rekindled.I think the Cthulhu mythos, which the game is based on, is one of my favourite roleplaying settings and I am an avid player of the Call of Cthulhu RPG, produced by Chaosium. The main problem with this game is that, as is often the case with online games - and MUDs in particular - it comes down to grinding zones for money and XP to advance. This isn't what the RPGs and background fiction of the Cthulhu Mythos are about so the MUD has a hard time placing itself where the purists can engage for long and the casual players can engage with the very immersive world descriptions and quests.Still, the professions from the various mythos RPGs have been replicated very well, there are a number o
f investigative quests, although you can only do most of them once, and the range of monsters from the background fiction is refreshingly accurate and bizarre. There is a crafting system for weapons and armour, although it is limited, but that's definitely in the game's favour. It also encourages roleplaying and its descriptions are very well pitched to evoke the 1920s era of the game, and most traditional Cthulhu mythos adventures.

Re: Cthulhu Mud

I'm afraid I fall into the category of a purist, in the sense that I think a mud isn't really the best way to evoke the mythos. I logged on a little while back and was a bit underwhelmed. I love the RPG itself, but this doesn't do much for me.
