Re: Nano Empire: an iOS strategy game about creating your own world

@Alec,I agree, finishing the game really wasn't a problem, indeed I didn't have too much trouble with the clown spirit the chocolate golem or any level 4 monster once I leveled up everything, indeed my only issue was that once I'd got most facilities to level 3, it was pretty much a forgone conclusion and the ending sort of snowballed exponentially (that big bad defense station with it's 100 mill stats went down like a wet balloon). I love the abilities and getting stuff, but a point came where they really mattered less, which was disappointing sinse exploring them was so much fun. Still, it's got at least three endings, and is a nice playthrough with lovely access and compulsive levelling, I'm going to be most interested to see either how Jcenter expands the game or what he turns up with next.

@bashue I disagree strongly. I forked over my dollar and pounded the core into submission in about 4 and a half hours divided into 2 sittings. It's not a waiting game, not really. Just takes some doin. Those ideas sound awesome though, and they would make the game 10 fold more replayable.

Re: Nano Empire: an iOS strategy game about creating your own world

Greetings all.Just a few suggestions on making the game more fun and challenging. First, the great clown head, mushroom forest, artisan town etc. It's true that on the first play through, it would be wise to fix the perform the awakening, create wonderland establish guilds at their default values but once you complete the game, why not allow us to customise the values even more? For example, the clown spirit is at 500 attack but if we increased it, we'd also be able to gain more than 1 attack and defence production; 1000 attack for 2 attack and defence production, 1500 for 3 production etc right up to 9 attack for 9 attack and defence production. You may be asking why not just use the regular system; instead of proposing 1 attack for 1 defence and attack production? The reason being that at the highest level, you're almost always guaranteed to lose so the reward should be greater to.Secondly, I'd also like t
o be able to level my zap effectiveness by more than a single unit so maybe there could be a way to fight lightning elementals for more? I know they don't currently exist but that'd be a neat monster to put in there. Same goes for follower and energy production; I'd like to level them up by more than 1 at a time if possible. Finally, I'd also like to be able to keep playing in my current world after completing the game instead of just being given a new world although it'd be neat if being given a new world is like a remort system where by instead of everything being reset, you get to choose a single building at level 4 to be copied over and with each new world, you get to keep 1 additional building. As for playing after the completion of the story, I think it'd be nice to become the alpha consciousness or supreme creator and you either get to destroy other people's worlds or aid them; kind of like a role reversal. Imagine what would happe
n if Peter never attacked you; instead, he invited you to his world to trade or even go for a vacation. You could help him refine his drinking habits and get him to sample wines instead of cheap beer and he'll thank you for it. If you could resurrect the vampire, he'd be grateful and invite you to his crypt world and you could even find someone to settle down with there if you so wish.Unfortunately I don't know much about programming or I'd find a way to create a game with some of these ideas. However, I love nano empire and Id love it if some of these ideas made it into the game. If not, no worries but if so, I'll be eternally grateful.Kind regards, Amin Abdullah.

jsenter, well done with this new game. I have completed it, and I can tell you, that it is beautiful. I said to my self, only 1 hour of playing before I had to go to bed for work the next day, well, i played for six hours straight, was way after 12 when i was finally done. and boy what a beautiful ending. keep up the good work. I'll definitely write up a review in the app store. I love how you can view each worlds little progress, and how you have to really think, since your choices does have a affect on what happens later on.flicking you back up to the status bar is a bit of a annoyance, especially since you rushing against time, since they attack you far more often when you get further in to the campaign mode. how ever, its a miner little thing, and I can assure you that i really enjoyed this game.

Re: Nano Empire: an iOS strategy game about creating your own world

Greetings all.I've completed the game with all 4 endings; the campaign ending, the underworld ending where you completely destroy the core and the peaceful endings where by you either comply or die. All that remains now is to ask about the secrets, I wonder what they are and what they do? Now I've just got the great clown head and levelled it to level 4 and I'm waiting until I have 2500 energy to jump-start defence production. I wonder why the level 4 requirements are so high? The reason why I ask is because once you've got 9 of each commodity, 500 attack of the clown spirit presents little challenge but before getting 9 of each stat, 500 clown spirit attack seems ridiculously high. That's why my new world is going to take a few weeks to fully develop unless there's a way to instantly max out our energy, attack, defence and followers.Kind regards, Amin Abdullah.

Re: Nano Empire: an iOS strategy game about creating your own world

Hey guys, time for Alec's post game review:Quite an epic numbers game I must say. It's awesome how a few thousand of everything turns into hundreds of millions by the end of the game. I suppose that's to demonstrate the sheer tininess and multiplying insanity of supposedly adorable little nanobots. I agree with the two others that have completed the game in that the ending was quite abrupt. My world was only 60% complete when civilization as I knew it ended, so I hadn't created and explored all of the locations available. A bit disappointing, but I'm sure I'll convince myself to start over and try again in a day or two, or perhaps sooner.About VO jumping to the top of the screen, it's a screen scrolling issue. When you use object navigation AKA swiping between stuff, there are sometimes inconsistencies where what VO is telling you and what the screen displays don't match up. I think the only way to fix that is to make the objects
a bit taller so the cursor doesn't get confused and jump around. I'm also running into a problem where when using object nav, VO will click on the item next or previous to the one I wanted. I think that happens for the same reason. To avoid the scrolling issue, just scroll the screen normally with three finger swipes up and down and use drags and split taps. You'll get things done much faster that way, I promise. Now let's talk strategy. I'm first going to tell you that, energy, is, your, friend. You can never have enough of it. Immediately after popping into existence, grab all the energy bonuses you can find and save defenses for a bit later. More energy means higher levels, and higher levels mean better abilities and way, way more power. Enemies can never permanently damage you in any way. The worse they can do is repeatedly whale on you and keep you from progressing. I haven't seen all the locations yet, but in my opinion, the four which are b
y far the most useful for the middle of the game are the towers, temple, privateer's cavern and probably the personal housing to speed things along. Level 4 towers have the ability to give you 500 attack or defense production at no cost, random chance, temple of the star level 3 has a relatively weak enemy you can repeatedly beat up for 300 energy production each, and the privateer's cavern level 3 has an enemy you can beat up for 150 follower production each as well as plunder bonuses that definitely should not be underestimated. The shimmering clouds are pretty great for earlier on as well because at level 3 you can capture red clouds which give 150 attack production each. Another thing you guys might want to know is that enemies can be used to your advantage a good bit of the time if you know what you're doing. Even though an enemy's attack depends not on who it is but on your defense, giving the enemy a good whipping, especially several times in a row can boo
st up your defenses and prepare you for when the enemy assaults you. Also, zapping and recruiting while you're defending is always in your best interest, and I really do mean always. If you fend off the attacker, you'll almost always make back what you spent on zapping and then some. If you lose, the math of the game will cause you to be no worse off. For all of these reasons, the campaign enemies are really nothing worse than annoying, and if you play your cards right they can often even be helpful. You should be focusing all your time on grabbing up all the truly massive bonuses the underworld has to offer and expanding your world. If you snap up most of those bonuses quick and combining that with repeated pressing of those four structures I mentioned, you'll soon be up to your balls in stuff, but not until almost the end of the underworld. That, was a long post. I hope i'm helping though. Have fun guys, and I look forward to giving this another go soon en
 ough.

Re: Nano Empire: an iOS strategy game about creating your own world

Lol nocturnus, hope you work it out. My stratogy is basically at the beginning look to create worlds that add defense value, then either create new worlds or level up the old ones according to what costs less energy. I don't usually get around to fighting peter myself until I've got a good few worlds up and a lot of defense value and attack value coming up. It's also good sometimes to do activities that take an energy cost earlier on, for example building skyscrapers in the capital sinse their gains are such that they can give you a legup in the early game, but by the time you have lots of stuff around level 2 they won't mean as much, increases in production particularly.

Re: Nano Empire: an iOS strategy game about creating your own world

Lol Aaron, I  was at the opposite position, I chose the story but it has multiple endings, so if the campaign mode has an ending that is at least three endings. Actually cool turk, while you won't find something with as huge a freedom as civilization or the like as far as creating worlds goes, there are alternatives available. Castaways can be played in a free mode where you can build what you like, as can Lunimals, and castaways 2 is going to have a single player mode as well as the online stratogy. then there are lots of muds and browser games as you said, indeed if you want a mud about creating your own empire try empire mud or wayfare1444. To be honest though i love the fact nano empire is a single player stratogy game with no annoying other players and alliances and minimaxing, just you building stuff and going through the story without having to worry about some huge player who's been playing for years crushing you or constant attacks that prevent
you from exploring or expanding. If on the other hand in terms of "open world games" you mean the fishbowl style games like skyrim, animal crossing  or grand theft auto that just give massive worlds to play in with optional objectives, well the reason there is again the usual one, that mainstream companies can put millions into development building such huge worlds where as audiogames and indi developers just plane can't.

Re: Nano Empire: an iOS strategy game about creating your own world

Well it's done.  I got one ending to the game and finished the story, plus built and upgraded everything, albeit the ending I got was I suspect more abrupt than planned, and also I was only %90 through the campaign mode and hadn't finished off the last guy in the list because I wasn't sure what finished first. I certainly liked and will be playing again when the new update comes out, sinse there is definitely another ending and more to see, indeed the world and subject for the game is quite fascinating and could also be expanded in so many ways. One thing I did notice however, is that because I tended to stagger my upgrades for levelling up between what cost least, by the time I got most things up to level 4, I didn't really need the level four abilities, particularly sinse at that point i was saving my followers for the story mode, indeed it seems your wisest to play this way, build everything and level up as needed  rather than t
o level up a couple of locations or try to build everything and leave levelling for later. Then again I've seen this in games before, you have to micro manage far more at the start than later on.I did notice a vo issue that when I'd built all locations in the world, I found that  flicking was a bad idea, I was better off actually tracking the columns up and down to get to each location, which also makes perhaps a way of travelling between worlds a good idea.I was also a little sad that some of the random locations you can go and explore and fight enemies I didnt' really get as much chance to play with sinse at that point I was either being attacked, attacking or doing bits of the story mode, indeed I wonder if enemy attacks on you and your abilities to attack enemies in the campaign mode need slowing down a little to give you a bit more chance to explore your locations and what they do, eg, have a timer on when you can attack enemies and when they c
an attack you, then again I admit I probably didn't concentrate on beating up other worlds as much as I might've done, I probably will make more of this next time, though it seems to pay in the game to try and keep your progress in the campaign mode and in building up your world relatively constant, ditto with your progress in the story.Either way, definitely a fun game, I'll look forward to seeing updates in the future and in playing again and getting the alternative endings.

However, dialogs like academy messages, wins, losses, and tutorial messages, only read once, focus on an ok button, and there's no way to arrow up and down and read what the messages say. Is there a way these dialogues could be changed to still be readable, or if not, could some sort of campaign/quest log system be added for screen reader users? Thanks in advance.

Re: Nano Empire: an iOS strategy game about creating your own world

@jsenter: I've been playing the web version for a while too. I'm wondering if you might be able to add a feature that lets you view a sort of log of what's happened for screen reader users, as the alert boxes just focus the ok button. The boxes that say about taking over in a campaign work fine, but the victory, loss, academy and tutorial messages focus on an ok button, read once, and there's no way to arrow up and down and study what the box says.

Re: Nano Empire: an iOS strategy game about creating your own world

Thanks for finding that, and letting us know a way around, also for the upcoming fix,  I confess it was a bit of a pest when I ran into the bug this time. I got rather far in the game, (mostly by building and levelling everything going and waiting to battle enemies). However after an unfortunate incident with a certain  tribal army, I wound up with minus sixty k or so defense, and  the game crashed, so I'm guessing Yoth the robot decided to make his move.Gr! that was very cool,  but I don't mind trying again now we know how to avoid the bug of doom, sinse things were getting rather awesome there, I had already defeated several enemies and most of the progress on things was around the fourty percentage mark, I'd built and leveled up lots of things and was just getting into the story.I'm  getting a little of the stratogy, so hopefully getting back shouldn't be too bad sinse Survival in the game seems to revolve arou
nd using your followers to increase production and other useful values. However, the problem I have is remembering which actions in which worlds do what and activating them often enough to make a difference, sinse most gains in the game seem via raising production over time rather than by direct player actions, indeed those things like building a sky craper that raise production values seem to make a major difference. Still if the scrub is added that might help a lot and speed things up. You could also consider implementing a gesture such as the two finger swipe right or left, or maybe the two finger double tap aka magic tap to let a player scroll through the worlds more quickly without having to go back and forth to the world menu and thus be able to do actions more often.

Re: Nano Empire: an iOS strategy game about creating your own world

I think I've found it!When VoiceOver is on, the Fight button stays selected briefly after the victory or defeat message pops up. If you tap fast enough, you will tap the Fight button again after combat has ended, which is never supposed to happen and can cause you to have negative defense, which causes the crash the next time you fight.I will submit a fix to Apple, and hopefully the update will be ready in a few days. Until then, it still should be possible to avoid the crash and finish the game (after redownloading) if you follow these instructions very carefully:TAP THE FIGHT BUTTON SLOWLY! WHEN COMBAT IS ABOUT TO END, WAIT FOR AN ALERT AFTER EVERY TIME YOU TAP A BUTTON, BEFORE TAPPING AGAIN!Thank you for all of your help in this process; I couldn't have done it without you! Also, I'm sorry if the enemy attacks become impossibly difficult. They are governed by an adaptive system with some randomness, and I guess in rare instances
it can go crazy. I should be able to add some new safeguards in the update.

Hi all,There's also a web based version that is quite accessible, testing with firefox and screen reader called NVDA. Including a feature called auto battle which means you just click fight and it does it for you.It appears in iFrames. Unfortunately if an alert box pops up there seems to be no way to re-read what's in it, so if you lose or win a battle and you miss it, I odnt' know if you can re-see it.This version can be found here, and is definitely official:http://www.kongregate.com/games/jsenter/nano-empireI don't know if it's necessary to sign up to congregate to save progress, but I did that after playing for a few minutes.Web version is also quite impressive I odn't know if it's accessible as the iPHone version or not. Re: Nano Empire: an iOS strategy game about creating your own world

I certainly noticed having negative defense at one stage, so that seems likely, and I do recall just having had a battle before the crash. If the crash is indeed related to stats rather than a specific bug with Ios versions, I will indeed delete the game from my Iphone and download it again, and I'll keep a watch on my defense value, especially after a battle. Of course this means losing all my progress, but hay, there you go. Glad it is something fairly obvious and hopefully relatively easy to fix.

@kool_turkk,  As Jsenter  said earlier, when using vo battles are turn based rather than requiring constant button hammering, so no problem there. I just wish the  bug would be fixed so I can continue playing. I don't see the point in redownloading and reinstalling the game, sinse it sounds like this crash is a pretty frequent error and one I'm likely to get again. This is a shame, sinse I'd love to see what else is on offer and how far the game goes. While not exactly like A dark room, I do find the hole idea behind the game and all the different locations to build and things to do very intreaguing and really! look forward to seeing more of it.

so my game is now in a completely unwinnable position.I'm at about 60% complete. A world frequently attacks me, taking 50 of my energy and all of my defense. The defense gifts of other worlds aren't enough to give me a defense profit. I have the space port built so I can construct larger fleets, but I can't build enough of them before I'm attacked again. The world in question is up to 1200 attack and is steadily increasing.

Re: Nano Empire: an iOS strategy game about creating your own world

Okay, I've downloded the game and given it a try. I do like thus far and am seeing the influence of a dark room, which is a good thing. The only issues I'm finding is firstly,  as brad said, occasionally for no reason when I double tap on something I get bounced to the notification area at the top of the phone which is a bit irritating especially when hitting back or create. access wise, the game is great, I love the location descriptions and random jobs to do, as well as the campaign. I am finding however that I am not doing the actions within each created world as often as perhaps I should be, indeed it's easier to create new worlds than to try and make optimum use of the ones you have sinse by the time I've done an action such as picking mushrooms in the mushroom forest or recruiting followers, then found the back button, and gone to the world menu to look at another world, I find it's time to do that action again, it'
s also likely that I'm not therefore gathering resources as quickly as I should be in the game. To alleviate this problem, I'd suggest perhaps firstly including the scrub gesture for Vo on the back button. That way it'd always be easier to get back to the main world menu. You could also consider implementing the "new" option in the world menu to have worlds with fresh tasks to be done either marked or bumped to the top of the menu, rather the way A dark room did, just to make the flicking easier. Well, back to creating I go, a very addictive game indeed!

Hi jsenter and welcome to the forum. As Brad said,it's wonderful that a developer begins working on a game with vo accessibility in mind from the start rather than adding it later on. I also love the idea of a single player empire stratogy game, sinse so often they are just multiplayer who can minimax most type of affairs, so great on that score, indeed as you can imagine with a lot of accessible games being simplistic, complex single player games are very much appreciated. I'm afraid in terms of adding the game to the database, it basically involves one of the editers (usually myself), playing the game, trying oit out and writing up an entry, which I'll be glad to do today. I'll also write up some news once I've tried the game to let people know it's available, I think people will love this one.

Hi.@jsenter: Welcome to the forum. Thank you very much for making your game accessible and usable for us. I don't mind paying for games which are made accessible with VOiceover, and I look forward to check out the game.

I got the game today. I am really enjoying it. At some point the game crashed and now when I start it crashes again. The game only stays open for a second then crashes. I would love to keep playing it!Thanks for making a great game so far.

Re: Nano Empire: an iOS strategy game about creating your own world

Hello; make sure to look at the developer page on applevis.I'm sure it will help you.As for music and sound affects, could you not get free sounds and music?I'd be glad to donate to this game if sounds and music and a bit more voiceover support was added. It's a great game but I really feel music and sounds would make it even better.

Re: Nano Empire: an iOS strategy game about creating your own world

Thank you for your suggestions, and I'm glad you like the game! I did not know about the magic tap; I'll look into it for the future. Music and sound would be great but unfortunately I'm not very skilled in this area and I'd rather work on new games for now. Currently that's filed under "If the game ever becomes successful..." With VoiceOver on, combat is turn-based, so you don't have to worry about tapping quickly.

Re: Nano Empire: an iOS strategy game about creating your own world

Hello; it is a fun game isn't it?It would be great if we could destroy buildings to get back resources.Oh and it would be amazing if something can be done about the fighting system. I think for now, sited people would have an advantage over us since we have to tap twice for every one of their taps.

Re: Nano Empire: an iOS strategy game about creating your own world

Hello Stirlock; the promo codes allow you to play the game for free.@Jsenter. i'd recommend implementing the magic tap jesture. It's a two finger tap voiceover users can use to play and pause music, get information in games and other things. You might use it to, for example, get a quick reading of how much energy your world has. That's just an example, I'm sure you can come up with other cooler ways of using it.

Re: Nano Empire: an iOS strategy game about creating your own world

Hello Jsenter; welcome to audiogames.net. I hope you enjoy it here and that we can help your game become the best it can be.I am so happpy that you didn't add voiceover accessibility as a feature request or a last minute thing. Seeing developers making their games accessible from the start to those of us who use voiceover makes me so happy.i'm playing nano empire and I think it's great! There is a little issue when you click on things to upgrade. Sometimes it will jump you to the top of the phone, where the status bar is.I'd recommend trying your game with voiceover if you can. Here is a great site for those of us who use voiceover, www.applevis.comThere's a developer page on there where you can learn more about accessibility.I do have a suggestion if that's okay, do you think you could add music and sound afects? I think that would be awesome.
