Because the PHBs are not interested in hearing about peering arrangements, and that it is possible to run a text-only usenet server, nearly all of the educational and research communities on Usenet are dead. I think even news.nrc.ca was shut down last year. And yes, I endorse not letting people make file sharing choices that destroy vast, healthy, and active communities. It looks like having to request posting access is a thing that my ISP does; I get giganews through them, and so I assumed that was a giganews thing. I *do* know that paying easynews customers have to request posting access:Posting is disabled by default on all Easynews accounts. This is the same for newly created and accounts that have been reopened. Can you point me to a policy that says a paid member cant post by default?As for a file sharing distribution protocol: while I certainly agree that the infrastructure has been hurt by binaries, any peer can choose what to carry. Giganews has quite a few ISP arrangements just to carry text groups (my provider, BT, included). Mozilla does likewise for its private-use groups. And would you really endorse not giving people choice in file sharing protocol? Its a wonder that YEnc hasnt been standardised for email yet (in a more sensible, IETF-like fashion, of course), since itd take a lot of the harm and uncertainty out of BASE64 encoding in seven-bit email, as well as having a very high probability of actually working with most of todays eight-bit-clean MTAs. NNTP is a logical choice for any asynchronous transfers, binary or text, where the local peer is close to the client. Email would make an even better choice, since the delivery would be asynchronous to the client itself or to many more email providers, like sendfile. But anyway, yes, I agree that given BitTorrent, NNTP is definitely redundant now. We dont need to deal with NZB, and we dont need to clutter up Usenet. Please do not! use giganews or easynews under any circumstances. By default, they dont even allow posting by new, fully paid accounts, and you have to email them if you want to be allowed to post. So its pretty clear that theyre just a hub for piracy. Those two providers have managed to do more to destroy usenet than AOL and spammers combined. While I dont support the MPAA/RIAA, or strict copyright laws, I would happily donate money to see the owners of those services given life+50 years in lockup. And in an age where it seems (to me, anyway) that Usenet is more and more deprecated, I cant really recommend you go with a standalone client anyway (although Im happy to be corrected, of course).I read news the way I read most things: via email. Mailmans NNTP gateway sucks what I need, and I process it by IMAP.
