My server is running at christopherw.me with the default 1 port. The rules should be obvious, but I'll take it down or make it private if it's abused. I don't have the time or patience to heavily moderate and/or otherwise deal with drama and other bullshit.

Re: AirPuck - A Multiplayer Air Hockey Game, now with custom server support

I think that the lists of servers would be useful. simply the game should read a file on your website and then show the list. to add a server that someone speaks to you in the forum or in a social network and pass you the data and bos add it. this would be useful if any server has lag you can find another or connect to the one that is closer to your country. then, the file should save the server name, domain and port.

Hello all,So I was thinking about doing this for awhile now, but today I finally decided it would be a great idea.I'd like to announce that AirPuck has returned, with the exception that it is no longer off of one central server. I've made it so that the people who enjoyed the game, can create a server of their own for players to play on.The link to the client and server is found here:https://tunmi13.dev/projects/airpuck_cl … server.zipI've also updated post 1 to reflect this change.Keep in mind the server version I released contains the puck back when it moved randomly, and it didn't bounce off at angles, and didn't have any physics. It doesn't have the player 1 always wins bug either.Enjoy,Tunmi

I honestly don't know what is there to miss about this one. The potential was there, ever since the first version, but since the puck was horribly broken the game was unplayable. There is a game with custom servers, working perfectly fine called Dragon pong. Yes, it isn't air hockey, but the principle of the gameplay, at least of the first version of this game remains the same.

also you can pause the game and restart it from the control panel, or even just restart the game, and when the game resumes, the puck just jerks forward and that often means it scores for you. THat's how some people just win as well. I think the game control panel should just be unavailable during the game because it causes more problems than it helps.

Re: AirPuck - A Multiplayer Air Hockey Game

Will test later today and let you know, but I played two games yesterday with a friend. In the first one I was player 2, and I noticed it was pretty much impossible to score. Then we switched on purpose and I was player 1. After scoring a few points, I stopped playing on purpose to see if my theory is correct, and it indeed was. Even after doing literally nothing, I could not lose a point. Ironically, the only way to lose a point is either alt tabbing away from the game or writing a chat. The second bug doesn't need a lot of explaining. In the middle of a game, you can simply access the control panel and change the score. If the score happens to be 7 to 4 for example, changing it to 5 in the middle of a game would result in your victory. The score should only be possible to change before the game starts.

Re: AirPuck - A Multiplayer Air Hockey Game

So, is this game dead? Asking because there are some bugs that can be noticed within 2 minutes of play testing the game. If you are player 1, you basically don't have to do anything and you will never lose a point. You can change the target score in the middle of a game, so if you are leading 6 4, just change the score to 5 and you won.

Re: AirPuck - A Multiplayer Air Hockey Game

Well, in the one match I managed to play I tried to hit it as far as I could. Sometimes the puck would go towards the opponent and sometimes not. The times that worried me were when I hit the puck that was on my right or left and it went dirrectly into my goal instead of going towards the opponent. It felt like I hit the puck with too little force and it returned to me instead of going towards player 1. I know this is not possible since how hard you hit is not implemented and the puck is not supposed to come back towards you if it does not hit anything.

Re: AirPuck - A Multiplayer Air Hockey Game

Well, how are you hitting it. When it bounces off the south wall, where player 1 is standing, the momentum will send it skidding back towards player 2, and vice versa. Also, try hitting it towards the center of the board. If you keep aiming for the right or left side of the board it will simply bounce back towards you because there is a wall there. But aiming toward the center will ensure that it has a course towards the goal. Also remember, the farther you are away from the puck, the more angle you're going to put into the puck when it goes flying.

Re: AirPuck - A Multiplayer Air Hockey Game

Hello guys, here is the new Message of the Day that sums up my discoveries.Message of the Day: Hey guys, erm, lets just say I'm here with the stupidest mistake I've ever made. So the reason for the pucks going backwards? Is because I was using the wrong y value for player 2. Player 2 is stationed at 15 on the y on the north side of the table. However, I put down the number 16 instead. Since its a ternary operator, it was thinking that the puck was always supposed to go north no matter what direction you hit it. So now, I've fixed it, and I believe I can re-introduce the angles with minimal problems now that we know what was causing the issue. Thanks.

I believe more people are having games at the same time, hence the lag. If I’m not wrong, and I don’t believe I am, the way the pucks work is that they send two packets for every movement.  If there are spectators, it’s 2+ the number of spectators.

Re: AirPuck - A Multiplayer Air Hockey Game

First, let’s get the terminology straight. You are not applying physics. Physics would be accounting for all the pressure, the force you exude on the puck, the acceleration, etc. You are doing none of those things.  What you are trying to figure out is simple trigonometry, if that. You’re just trying to get angles to work.  I believe people have tried demonstrating what you should do yesterday in terms of mathematics. Second, I played air hockey. Here is how it works. While you are correct that the puck drifts from left to right, the key here is that it drifts. It doesn’t jump, and its direction is overwritten any time it gets hit because the pressure which the table exerts onto it is so minimal.  This is why making diagonal shots is very possible, not to mention making the puck bounce back-and-forth at the ridiculously fast speed. So, as I see it, you have a couple of options here: you can revert to the old system, in which case you would lose players like me because you’ll essentially boil down the game to who is bored enough to continue playing. Second, you can try and figure out these angles with the limited knowledge that you currently have, which may be quite difficult.  Third, you can go do some research as to the angles behind AirHockey. You’re not looking for physics, though if you so choose you can add that in as well, you’re just looking  into what exactly happens when people hit the puck.  Fourth, you can take this down and apologize for taking on too much or not realizing that this is a lot more complicated. I won’t hold it against you, I tend to bite off more than I can chew as well.  As of now, though, the game is literally unplayable.

Re: AirPuck - A Multiplayer Air Hockey Game

I'm sorry about the tone of the last post, but I do feel it was warranted. I didn't mean to hurt you, but I did want to make sure it got through to you, which most things don't seem to do. You say the random thing is fine, but it's not how air hockey works. The air on the table is only to reduce friction. While it may move a bit if you just sit the puck on the table, it's not going to randomly change directions, or let you score in your own goal, etc. Both of your versions are just not correct, I'm sorry but it's true. Now, if that's good enough for you, OK, it's your game and that's fine, but it's not how air hockey works. You say you used to have a table, OK then. You know that you put the puck down in the table, someone goes first, and from there, it never stops until someone scores. The puck doesn't change directions on its own, and it never goes slow enough where the phenomenon that you describe where the air could possibly move it would take effect. We're talking about a reduced friction environment with inertia and momentum.I'll have to take your word for it about how much you needed Mohamed, I'm going based off of observations, and it did seem like he was doing some clean up work on the game. This is where a design process comes into play. Have you tried Ear hockey from Microsoft Garage? It's a free audio game. While you could definitely say it's got its weird aspects, it also does the puck movement very well. What I'm trying to get you to see is that by going ahead with this without proper planning, you now have a game with a malfunctioning puck. This could have been avoided if you would have gone through a more rigorous design process instead of writing code. Also, so as not to sound like my shit doesn't stink, I do the same thing and often come up against the consequences of improper planning when I have to refactor or re-write code.

Re: AirPuck - A Multiplayer Air Hockey Game

@90" Uh, ouch? I guess?First off, I didn't need Mohamed for fixing any network code but the on and off parts, which were causing issues. But other than that everything I've done has been my work. I'd also like to stress that some of your comments cut pretty deep if I would be honest. But when I made this, I didn't have the whole rotational thing in mind, because our air hockey table had air that was always moving the puck lefta nd right anyways. So when people told me to add in the directional stuff, I was confused, because. 1. Our table was designed so that the puck was always moving around on the table unless we actually hit it hard enough to send it in a particular direction. and 2. I didn't realize that physics had to be applied, because the goal was to have it randomized and not physics. And you know BGT with physics is very interesting. And about the whole advice thing. Do you really think I just made this online right from the start? No, as I said in post 1. This was originally offline. It was a project I was working on, and I felt confident by looking at the process of porting it to online and was able to successfully port it over. So when you say I don't have the required experience, I doubt that this game would even exist. The puck that was there before was only having one issue, and that was the puck getting stuck. I hadn't heard any other issues with the puck, other than the physics stuff that people wanted applied. So I tried to apply it, and yeah Sure. I failed. But at least I tried, for my player base. I wanted to help them. But this isn't helping them. So I'm reverting back to the old way.

Re: AirPuck - A Multiplayer Air Hockey Game

I'm just gonna be blunt. You don't have the experience necessary to be making games like this. You need Mohamed for fixing the network code and cleaning up things you break. You also have no idea how to do this puck thing. Let's be honest here, you just don't. That's not a knock, it's complex math to get it right. You want to offer players up two options, both of which don't work correctly. OK, I get it, you don't know how to do it right, so you're up against a wall. This should have been part of the design process though. You don't make 7/8 of a game only to realize that the 1/8 bit, which in this case is the most important bit, is not going to be right because you don't know how to code it.You're doing what I did when I started to code, and you're neglecting parts of your education. This is bad because you're working from a weak foundation. I can't stress enough how what you're doing will just lead to more and more broken projects down the line. That said, you do know how to code, at least at some level. I would advise that you take stock and evaluate your current level of understanding - being honest with yourself - and find materials that will help you fill in the gaps. This also translates into the size of projects that you take on. For one thing, an air hockey game probably isn't the best idea if you don't know networking code all that well. What you should have done is taken what you would consider a strong offline skillset and design a small game that brings it online. Even if only you and your friends play it, it still provides educational value. At any rate, I doubt that I'll be playing this as it doesn't interest me all that much. With no audio effects like HRTF and the sound design being barely adequate, plus all the things that don't work right, I think I'll pass. Maybe people will continue to play this, I don't know, but I'd expect to see a sharp decline once the novelty wears off if you're not willing to put the time and effort in to make the puck work as you'd expect.

well, the first puck was atleast playable for player 2. As the game stands right now, it's almost impossible to win if you are player 2 on any game and very easy if you are player one. This means a huge imbalance in the game that will drive people away. Before the game was equally playable for both players even if it had it's flaws. Anyway, you are the developper and it's your decision. You have done a great job with this game sofar and I'd love to see it continue to grow.

We go back to the old puck, and have people mentioning how physics aren't applied and its randomized state.or. 2. We stay with the current puck we have right now.

Yes, this one is definitely broken and sometimes has a weird pattern. You hit the puck, it goes towards the other player, he hits the thing, the puck then goes to your left, and then to the right, and the pattern starts again. And the worst is that it's part of the pattern that after 2 or 3 hits, the puck gets stuck on player2's left and player2 literaly needs to walk there and hit it, otherwise the game feels like if it was paused because the puck doesn't move.

Well, this one could be better but I don't see the logical thinking behind it. Can you explain how it works? To me it seems broken because I managed to score in my own goal sometimes and I don't understand how it can be possible when I am supposed to throw the puck towards the opponent. Even if the puck goes sideways it should continue towards the opponent not come back to me. Try playing a round as player 2 in any room and you will understand what I'm saying.

Re: AirPuck - A Multiplayer Air Hockey Game

Unfortunately this new redesigned puck is seriously broken, much more so than the last one. If you are the room's creator sems to work fine but if not then you are in for some trouble. First it seems like you are hitting the walls most of the time and the puck just comes back to you without going on the other side of the table. Sometimes, I would play by myself managing to get the ball in the goal without moving or the other player hitting it. The puck keeps going about half way and then comes back to you so you have to hit it really fast and it's near impossible to hit it towards the other player, a goal being hard to score. I played with someone on a room I created and I watched him struggle while I could finish him off in a few lucky hits that came towards my side of the table but being player two is not that funny anymore.@Tunmi I know you've got some problems but this seriously needs fixing. If you don't have the patience or the time please put back the old version, 0.33 I think it was called, it was much better.

@Ironcross: Sorry, that's not what I meant. What I meant was placing your mallet on the table in a defense position, meaning by your goal and not on the table literally. I already know that your mallet is on the table, I've played air hockey before.. We actually used to own a hockey table, but I believe the table stopped generating air for some odd reason and we threw it out.

Hi,A few thoughts and suggestions on the game,I really lvoe this idea, I've been waiting for it for years now.1. the sound when you hit the puck is too quiet and doesn't sound realistic to heated game play when the puck goes flying and clanks off the blocker. could this be changed?2. the sound when a puck scores is also too quiet and too similar to hitting the puck sound. could you find a sound of a puck sliding into a goal? maybe a clanking sound or a ding to signify the score? textual announcements would be nice too, like "X just slammed a wammy into Y's goal, ah well..."3. the puck sound either is laggy, or doesn't always play consistantly, posslby would reccommend finding a more seemless sound or checking the server lag somehow.4. the puck does speed up, however I don't think the end speed of the puck is realistic to heated matches, could you possibly add in a little more speed to make it more interesting?5. I saw an update on puck hitting in directions, this would be great! However I don't like the fact that space doesn't seem to work properly all the time and holding it down doesn't seem to produce the effect of placing your blocker on the table to block, meaning blocking constantly.6. I would love to see the addition of modes, arena mode, with a croud, double mode, with two pucks, tripple mode, with three pucks, triangular mode, with three ends of the table for 3 players, obstacle mode, where there is an obstacle on the table that the puck has the chance of bouncy off of for more directional travel etc.7. would like to see more possiblities for arcing the puck left to right across the table for bounce goals getting arroudn the opponents blocker etc.8. the sound of an air hocky table would be nice to include, i.e the sound of soft blowing air in the background.9. please, this is a problem I have with both this game and others designed by you, remove the 5 letter restriction for character names? it makes no since to block names like jake, jack, john, bob etc, I was very disappointed when I couldn'/t use my normal user name for almost every game, and I would seriously appriciate it if you made it possible.10. finally, an option to extend the score limit from 10, either in groups of five or in tens to a max of something like 50. It would make the game a longer lasting competition and more interesting for long winded games.I also would'nt mind seeing the sound for moving across the table changed, currently it sounds like you are walking left and right, I think it would be more realistic for it to be the blocker sliding felt on solid serface, just my thoughts on the sound, and I think moving should be disabled in the main room since people use it to spam sounds. Thanks, keep up this amazing game and I hope to see more from you!P.SI have several sound libraries that include good sounds for some of these suggestions if you want help finding sound files that you don't have to pay for, since they're all royalty free or legally licensed sounds.
