Here's the thing. If Blizard really cared about accessibility, they'd be giving us a timeline or at least an outline for what they wanted to work on next. I don't see any of that. That's not negative or just complaining for the hell of it, it's pragmatic. What I see is maybe a tiny accessibility team in a massive corporation who were under pressure to do *something* but don't have enough company resources or clout to make it matter. Probably their few accessibility people care a lot and want to make everything work well for us. Probably nobody else does. Had this been accompanied with some sort of roadmap for future progress, I'd be all in. As it, it just seems like busywork. Hell, when netflix released audio described Daredevil they made a point of saying look, this is just a start, we'll do more in the future. All I see from this press release is "hey, we hope more people can use the launcher," even if they'd said "we want to improve accessibility however we realistically can and will use feedback to help determine what can be done", it wouldn't feel like an exercise in futility. But I've worked for big companies, I know how isolated all the teams usually are from each other and this really just feels like a few accessibility people trying not to be bored.

You'll need some assistance as they're using a specialized UI for the installer. yes there's some sad irony in this whole thing, but make sure to email the accessibility people with your concerns about the installer. My hope is that if we all say. "Hey. Guys. this beta is cool, but we can't install it.", his might re prioritize adding accessibility to that part of the installer.

I have always dreamed of playing Diablo, Warcraft. I look forward to further news, but in the gaming industry. because the meaning of all this is without accessibility in the games themselves. in the incentive, in this regard, everything is much simpler and clearer. it will be sad if all this stops at the availability of only their client to buy and download games that are not available to us. lol. look forward to. Re: Blizzard working on accessibility of battle.net & looking for feedback

There are days when I am witness to sighted people playing games on youtube and, instead of staying on the sidelines I wish like crazy I was the one playing them.  Then I see a topic like this one and begin hoping again.  Has that hope been smashed by companies in the past? Sure, but if I had to wager on the why, I'd say that the small minority who finds reasons to poke holes in what a company does or how they go about it in terms of bringing acessibility are to blame more often than not.Somewhat related and just to prove my point, not too long ago I heard one guy basically come out and bash the blazes out of Native Access for not having made Komplete Kontrol more accessible to blind musicians; note the words more accessible, please.  That in essence means the company actually went out of their way to make the product accessible to begin with to some degree; yes, it is accessible.  Is it ideally accessible?  Nah, not entirely.  Is if further along than it was five years ago?  Absolutely, and I'm thankful.  This, right here, is the kind of step forward I'd like to see more often from huge companies, but I feel it doesn't happen as often given the nay-saying.  This is not one of those situations where you can look away and say that this community doesn't have any influence, because when it comes to gaming from a blind perspective, this community has stuck around longer than most. And yes, I'm guilty of having been on the other side at least once... See post 2.  I stil don't know what came over me that day and caused me to ignore the question and be so critical of what, precisely, it was I was actually listening to.  No, on the whole and when you think shortterm as most of us tend to do, you instinctively think this isn't that valuable, but it really, really is!  It's been noticed that we want accessibility!  It's been taken into consideration, however lightly!  It's been realized that there's a bunch of people who might otherwise benefit from having screenreader and sound element support!  If you're the type that simply thinks of the instant gratification life has to offer, then no, this is not for you; please kindly bow out.  If, on the other hand, you're willing to stick it out and think longterm and put in effort to both help the company head in a positive direction and are willing to accept that it may not happen in the next two days, two weeks or even two years, then good on ya.  I hope I can be influencial in the next steps forward, if at all.

My one pal who plays WOW hasn't been on in a while so I haven't had a chance to try any of the communication features, but this is a huge step forward.the installer is probably our biggest pitfall right now as it's completely inaccessible.I'm planning on getting notes together and will do my part to email them. Here's hoping the installation process will be improved in future along with some access to games. We're living in some exciting times, and I love it.

I hate to burst your bubble but that's not going to happen.there are a number of reasons why companies use these ttypes of launchers. Security, user management, ETC.they are never going to create patches to bypass their own system.Instead, we need these companies to make their launchers accessible. Sounds like Blizzard is on the right track.

Re: Blizzard working on accessibility of battle.net & looking for feedback

Ya ya, sure, you need the launcher to start a game and thats the only way to do so. Sorry, thats totaly bullshit!it wouldn't even be a hint of a problem to create a patch for a game like heartstone to run it without refering to BattleNet.For example, Have you ever installed something from steam? It may surprises you, but you should take a look on your desktop. Please don't fall down, you will find a shortcut to run the game and dont need steam to start it.But yeah, thanks for all your good reasons. And please keep your ridiculous frustrations. I'm just as frustrated with you!I only said in my first post that i dont realy understand why they start up with such an unimportant part of it.But yes! I wish you days of infinite fun with the great BattleNet!

To be fair I do understand the frustration that some people have. The problem occurs when you attack the company for not doing enough. Look at it this way. If someone attacks you for something you're doing because they don't think it's enough, does it make you want to do more or does it cause you to dig your heels in? No one is saying you need to praise a company and never criticize them, just don't be an ass, either.

I personally am glad they finally have interest into making their programs more accessible and who knows, perhaps nothing will come of it, but they show signs they want at least, given their earlier statements that accessibility wasn't something they considered. I will take a look at the battle.net application as well and send them feedback. If they make heartstone, WoW, All the diablo games, and starcraft accessible all in one go, what fucking good is it going to do you if you can't open the damn games by yourself? Because to me, this battlenet launcher sounded like the kind of thing not even OCR could get you around, kind of like the rockstar launcher. i'm pretty sure you'd get absolutely fucking pissed if you had to get a sighted person to run your games every time you wanted to play. We all benifit from the launcher being accessible. people who don't have the money to pay for Aira calls or who don't have 24/7 on demand sighted assistants hovering around them to do their bidding, people that just want to do things on their own for a change, you know. Also, if you want to hate on Blizard or steam or epic or any other company's business practices, go do it somewhere else, while the rest of us, those who actually know just how much this step means, actually submit some more valuable feedback.

Re: Blizzard working on accessibility of battle.net & looking for feedback

Ok.you will need to search for battle.net downloads one of those links will go to blizzard's site.Select apps heading and hit it.Now tab about, you won't be able to active read that section of the website normally but you will be able to tab.Eventually you will find battle.net client for windows, expand that, then download, its a bit crazy interface but you will get there.Click that file and install it.use nvda capslock and r for ocr, make sure you have another window like your downloads folder open.Read what is on the screen.hit continue.alt tab back and forth a couple times.do the same again. It will update, click install.Keep doing that till its done hit finnish. The same will happen on uninstall. Now login.1.Open battle.net, and it will appear with new account.create it like so. there will be labeled fields for email phone, etc.select your country as you usually would, if not detected which it should be by default. Now enter your birthday in mm/dd/You can't read the box, so don't try, locate the mm spinable and type it in, tab and do the same with the day.Note due to inaccessible tracking you can't read what you put in, you can't do anything with it but type but you can get it done. You can create the account.Right now just your email will work. You will have to varify your email address from a link in your email. On the website you can accessibly add a mobile phone number and connect to just about everything you can think of including installing and using an authenticator app, set security questions, etc.Accessing settings. You can't do much from the main window right now so go back to your desktop with windows and d tab to system tray and rightclick with the app key or the function and page down or whatever key is your rightclick simulation or shift f10 or whatever.Select settings, this menu reads.select beta and hit space, hit get started.wait for a few minutes and finally hit restart. To uninstall the game client rightclick the battle.net client in system tray and hit exit.uninstall as you would usually do, once you hit uninstall wait till it appears, use nvda r or whatever and get ocr up, hit yes.alt tab back and forth or enter and exit start menu or whatever then do it again. It will finnish, hit finnish and you are done.Right now the client is not much use for us blind people certainly you can't chat if you can't read and actively edit your stuff. You can tab about in the client and read stuff. The website after you login to the account though is playable and usable to a point. Is it worth trying it right now?Probably not, its not really ready pluss I have sent a bug report but others can try and see.

Re: Blizzard working on accessibility of battle.net & looking for feedback

Hi,I am an accessibility consultant who is blind.  I use to work at a Fortune 50 company before I decided to work for a business where we focus on accessibility.  So I have both experience with the frustration of wanting to use accessible software and also trying to make software accessible.  I just wanted to briefly speak to some of the complaints. When any company or developer asks our community to give them feedback on the accessibility of one of their products, it is invaluable for us to do that (if you are so inclined to want to put in the effort.)  First, you need to understand that typically the people who are asking us for that feedback are the people who really want to make their software accessible to us.  Developers, designers, and people who work on accessibility tend to be people who passionately believe in it.  By providing useful feedback, you are encouraging them to do even more work on accessibility.  By providing them with useful feedback, you also give them information that they can use to convince other developers and designers that accessibility is meaningful and worthwhile to do.Typically, the first software they may try to make accessible may not be the one you care most about.  There are a number of factors that go into deciding which application they are going to try to make accessible first.  Blizzard is probably starting with Battlenet because it is a gateway to playing their games.  If it isn't accessible to some degree, trying to get feedback on accessibility efforts in a game may be more difficult.  They may also be starting there because it might be easier to make it accessible--and it is always easier for someone new to accessibility to learn how by starting off with something easier. For those of us who want to provide useful feedback, we probably ought to make sure those developers and designers know they are going to get some not so useful negative feedback.  Chances are they are already use to this if they have looked for feedback from any of their other users (disabilities or not.)  However, it might be important to help them understand that this negative feedback often comes from the frustration that comes from dealing with other inaccessible products or from past experiences where a company seemed to ask for feedback and then did nothing with it.   the skepticism may not be useful but it is understandable--especially early on when we don't know the people who are asking for feedback so we are uncertain if the feedback is going to lead to any concrete results.Just some thoughts for consideration.

Re: Blizzard working on accessibility of battle.net & looking for feedback

Yeah I tried this.I sent a report. So basically there are not that many issues with the current client.Even the stable client.Comboboxes called spinnable controls and forms are labeled and do read. However they are not tracked, no reading back your data, no deleting your data with backspace you need to get it right first time.Forms to enter security codes are not labeled, and some checkboxes in settings are not accessible. The install and uninstall can be ocrd and thhis does work but you have to doodle about a little.I was able to submit and register an account, view the shop and games lists.I was able to tab about and read things. For a first beta, if they fix the installer and the forms and boxes right, minor elements, that would be fine.If they just used standard install and uninstallers without any custom elements at all for their clients then they would be done with the client. As a launcher without anything in it its not that bad at all.By itself this aint much but it has potential, certainly if they put a week or 2 on this, and fixed the forms and checkboxes and labeled everything and fixed the tracking issues, and the installer, then maybe a week or 2 or less and we would have a client that works its basically finnished. As it stands its accessible enough to log in and play games with. Not to chat but this is a beta after all. There isn't much needing to be done  and as a first time it works almost seemlessly. It would be nice if valve actually gave a damn about its customers to.The installer again does work and with a little jerking about the client does sort of work but not what I would call usable.I could actually get used to using battle.net and be happy with it.Thats not what I usually say for a first effort. Its rare that I get presented with an almost completed project.

Re: Blizzard working on accessibility of battle.net & looking for feedback

Just out of curiosity, as there's some chat here about wishes for future titles, what would you most like to see from blizzard in future if they were to work on accessibility in games? Are there any that you're already playing to any kind of degree, with assistance or otherwise? What I'd like to see the most is progress on Hearthstone, as it could be a relatively quick win due to consisting only of a relatively simple interface rather than a 3D environment. And it would be a big step up from Diceworld in terms of games that sighted and blind players could compete against each other at on completely equal terms!I'd love to hear your thoughts on a personal interest level, though it probably wouldn't hurt to send some of those thoughts over to that blizzard email address too.

I agree with Hearthstone. I've always had a personal interest in world of Warcraft and Diablo. But hearthstone from an interface standpoint would be the easiest project for them to get off the ground.

Re: Blizzard working on accessibility of battle.net & looking for feedback

Just out of curiosity, as there's some chat here about wishes for future titles, what would you most like to see from blizzard in future if they were to work on accessibility in games? What I'd like to see the most is progress on Hearthstone, as it could be a relatively quick win due to consisting only of a relatively simple interface rather than a 3D environment. And it would be a big step up from Diceworld in terms of games that sighted and blind players could compete against each other at on completely equal terms!I'd love to hear your thoughts on a personal interest level, though it probably wouldn't hurt to send some of those thoughts over to that blizzard email address too.

Re: Blizzard working on accessibility of battle.net & looking for feedback

Something this community has to learn is patience. I suspect we will not see anything from Blizard for two to three years. I mean. It may be sooner, but in the meantime, having access to the launcher is actually more important than being able to play anything. After all. you can't load the game and play it if the launcher isn't going to speak.I would rather see a company start at the bottom and work their way up instead of half assing it.

Re: Blizzard working on accessibility of battle.net & looking for feedback

That is an awesome step I'm glad to see this development.I'm actually quite curious about their thought process. Currently, it is true that Blizzard's games are , at best, very difficult to play fully blind.  However, this step would seem to indicate they want to change this?I think that World of Warcraft, with modifications, could be made playable at least to a casual level, so I am really hoping this is the precursor to such modifications. If not, at least this is a step in the right direction

Re: Blizzard working on accessibility of battle.net & looking for feedback

I'm not saying that this is not a good thing and that I wouldn't try it out and give feedback.I only think that it would be better if they have made something accessible before making the launcher usable. But if you put it that way I can see the merrit in this strategy as well.Sorry for posting before thinking it through from multiple angles.

Re: Blizzard working on accessibility of battle.net & looking for feedback

@2 @3 That's not how accessibility works, at all. It takes many years to make a game, and retrofitting accessibility into an existing game is very difficult. It costs nothing to download and try battle.net, and sending feedback on how it does and doesn't work will give blizzard valuable knowledge that could potentially be applied to other things they do in future.Honestly - this is something to be incredible excited about. How often do you see a big company making a public commitment to accessibility, not just through words but through actions? And how often is there the opportunity via a public feedback call to influence the direction that accessibility takes at a company like that?
