Re: good muds Well from a recommendation in another post, I've checked out Lament, and its amazing. Very unique, for instance, rooms are usually pretty big, and you don't go through them instantly, instead, it takes time based on your posture / pace. You can walk, jog, run, sprint, stoop and crawl. It involves looking at things in a room to get the whole picture. It's very well descript. It's RP oriented and features awesome combat. The crafting is cool in its own way. This one's very unique, it also has a screen reader mode which replaces the graphics with text. I could go on for hours about the intricacies of Lament. It's well worth checking out. It really does need more players, its a shame, but I've not seen anyone on there except the admin, and its insane that its not more popular. It's setting is 10 to 12th century. lament.ghostglass.net port 8600 if you want to check it out. Re: good muds I love aardwolf and it does have a soundpack my now deceased friend put it together borrowing from the altar sounds and others he found and he and i recorded. I will try and find a place to put it since its rather large coming in at close to 700 mb the updater is obviously broken and will throw an error but don't worry about it I may learn to code and update it myself and fix the updater but right now i just don't have the time. give me some time and remind me in a couple days via email and i will get to putting it in dropbox or something I just have to find a place to put it where others can download it and cant afford a website right now. Re: good muds
Re: good muds @Firefly, if you love games where you practice by doing, you would love Clok, that is how you learn all the skills in the game, indeed even if you get someone to give you a lesson or pay for a lesson, that just means you will gain that skill faster for the next 24 hours when you practice it. I'll also say Clok has some of the most fun skills to use, sinse if for example you want to light a fire you ca't just type "gather wood" and then light fire, you need to gather the right lengths of wood, and kindling and tinder, then light the fire and add things to it. It sounds complex but I've rarely played a game where just surviving in the wilderness, hunting and skinning and cooking animals for food can give you such a sense of accomplishment that you've really! done something that matters. I believe Avalon is somewhat similar but I'm not exactly sure sinse I've not really got to the point of practicing many skills yet. Re: good muds Hey hey!Maybe someone could help me with a little detail:I will try to explain it.I like if i can practice a skill on my own. For example i used one practice to learn a little of a skill and afterwards i am using the skill for leveling it up.In 6dragons i learned the skill sharpen only one time to maybe 8%. Then i got me a loot of swords and practice sharpen on my own. HAHA the first 50 swords were broken very quickly. But i like this way of learning by doing. I dont like if you have to buy up a skill buy using practices. Are there more muds with this level-up-system? Re: good muds
Re: good muds @MAta, about avalon there is a much more extended topic and a huge! amount of info on The avalon website found here The game has been running longer even than muds like Alteraeon and Aardwolf and has a lot of history behind it. The community is very friendly and in some ways reminds me of clok, in that it doesn't really have a streight jacket rp policy, but you do play as your character, and a lot of activities in the game are focused around others, for example your city or your guild and your profession. So for example, you could be a clerric and bless or curse a village and gain your city influence by people's faith, or you could farm things and then sell the result or be a crafter, or as a knight or other combat profession fight against your city's enemies or against monsters. It's however far more diverse and a bit more fluid than most muds are, and has some of the nicest environment descriptions I 've seen, and a really unique system of levels and experience.I've not exactly got far into the game, indeed I'm not sure if I've chosen the right character profession but we'll see, sinse while I've finished the newbie tutorial I'm not really sure what to do next. The odd thing is that the game is sort of a mix of a paid game and free, sinse you need to be a subscribed player to play, but organizations like cities, guilds etc and other players can sponsor you which gives you time for free, and this occurs very often and is something people are willing to do. I only mention this because I've seen some people who blow a gaskit at the thought of paying for a mud, but from what I've seen thus far the payments are justified, and you don't have to pay anyway so long as your willing to be an active player.I'd recommend giving it a try, although as I said I'm a little unsure of where I am in the game thus far. As to Aardwolf, I loved the combat, the quests and the areas for what they were, it's rare I've seen a hack n slash game that has grabbed my interest so much with the quick development and environments. The thing that put me off though was eq balancing, sinse it just seemed far too hard to not only find equipment, but minimax the equipment you need to be effective even at your level, indeed that is one area I think where Clok and Avalon are similar, ie, equipping your character is a matter of eing intuiative not calculating a bunch of formulae and looking at lists of every peace of gear in the game vs complex formulae of your character's abilities to find the best combination there is or die.I have to disagree about cyber assault though. I really didn't care for the writing in the game, sinse while I loved the idea the thing just seemed a little too overthetop and not particularly serious to me, also I have to say I really! didn't lik e the speed of combat in that game, it seems unless your prepared to do lots of scripting combat at average pace is super fast, especially compared to more tactical and realistic combat in games like Clok or what I've seen of avalon. People are welcome to give it a try, it just wasn't my thing at all. Re: good muds
Re: good muds What's Avalon like, for those who try? Dark's post kinda got me a bit to have the urge to try it.@the topic owner : Here's what I recommend so far :1. Cyber Assault, though not fantasy-ish, it's still one of the greatest mud, especially in terms of questing which is even hard to figure sometimes.2. Clok, if youre into rp and fantasy, this is deffinetly your thing.3. Epitaph, though harder to get into, once you get hold of it (which takes extremely long for me), it's one of the best zombie survival muds out there.4. Aartwolf, yeah it's like Alter, but in my point of view, not as activity driven as Alter. I actually stopped playing it a while ago. But it could be your style if ya like that sort of mud.5. Hellmoo, it sure is dirty, but it sure is fun. If you can't stand dirty, sexual, dark humor or stuff like that, don't try. But if you're into it, this is your world. According to the quest list the next person I had to see was the bartender, but he wouldn't talk to me, and going back to the mystic shop owner he just kept giving me the same objects, and sinse there was no one on the game at the time I was a trifle stuck for how to advance. Re: good muds @razvitasca, I'm not sure what you mean by "how do I play 6 dragons with Vipmud" you just go to the connect menu, and either add a character or just use quick connect if your on for the first time and type in the connection info. I personally like Vipmud as a general purpose mud client, I find it much easier to use in general than MushZ, though I do also appreciate the Alter mushZ pack and use that regularly for Alteraeon. If I remember rightly six dragons did have a soundpack, not a full audio interface like alteraeon (only Alteraeon has one of those I think), but rather like what materiamagica has, just the odd sound occasionally. Then again, sounds are so rare in most muds it always disappoints me when I find people who are constantly expecting what Alteraeon has and reffuse to play muds without that, muds are text games after all, indeed I'd argue that Alteraeon with it's soundpack isn't really a great introduction t o muds in general sinse these days Alteraeon is more of a full scale audio rpg than a mud, and if a person wants to try different muds she/he should get used to text, sinse there are some great games out there despite the lack of sounds.I'm a little taken up with Avalon at the moment, but I'll certainly consider giving six dragons a try when I'm not. Re: good muds HMM, OK, this might be a little tricky. Vladaar the creator of 6dragons is working on a soundpack. Only problem is, that it is only working from one path. Your 6dragons folder has to be exactly on c:\I will talk to him and try to discuss about this problem. You can find a link in the 6dragons-topic in this forum. You will need some plugins for Mushclient for better accessibility.I would not use mushZ, cause it was exactly designed for AE. I think the Three important Plugins are outputfunctions, mushreader and maybe the msp. As i said, i will try to talk to him about this. Re: good muds Hey hey SnowKittyPlease please try 6dragons. I like this mud very much. It has some realy nice races and classes. You can decide if you want to play a oneclass-character or a character with 2 or even 3 classes.Let me just say some unique things about this mud.First, it has a realy nice system of Jobs. You can be blacksmith, baker, tanner, carpenter or jeweler. Aaand this is very important in this mud cause the stuff you will craft is very very powerful. So if you are a blacksmith soon someone will ask you to craft some weapons or armor for him. Or if you choose to be a baker you can bake or mix interesting food wich will give you nice resistances against magic or fire or other types of damage. And food helps you to regenerate a lot faster.Another realy nice part of the MUD is the citizenship. You can decide in wich city you want to live and you will have a house in the city. The fun part is, that other citys can attack your homecity and you have to defend i t. Or if you want, you can lay siege on other citys. Very nice, you get special glory points for those cityfights with wich you can buy your self additional stats like intelligence, strength, constitution and all other possible stats. The last thing i want to mention is the realy nice players aaand our big master Vladaar who is buidling all this. If you got ideas or bugs you want to report you can send everything to him and he will take a look. He is very much interested in making this mud as accessible as possible. If you need someone, my name is Jennock. I am a female gnome bard. Login and say hello! We absolutely need more players! Re: good muds
Re: good muds Moderation! Welcome snowcat to the forum. This part of the forum is for announcing newly released games, so I will move this topic to general game discussion where such questions usually go. As regards muds, well if you check the database on the front of site, you will find several descriptions for muds, (go to where it says search database and select muds as the genre). There are lots of muds, albeit none with a soundpack like alter, however there are many others that have unique gameplay and style, indeed you might also want to check This topic where someone recently asked about muds.At the moment I'm playing avalon rpg, which I'm finding very good with the different activities, unique combat and extremely complex world, it's not a hack n slash like alter but there is lots to do. There is also the very combat orientated and random aardwolf, the extremely well put to gether and realistic clok (which probably has some of the best wilderness I've seen), the detailed and roleplay intensive Diskworld, and the highly complex and very large materiamagica. Six dragons is rather quiet in terms of players but has a nice crafting system and selection of races, while frandom is more like an ongoing interactive fiction than a mud with many quests and different things to explore and do.I've also heard good things about Lost souls, though haven't tried that one.Getting away from standard medeival fantasy, there are several muds in space like Prometheus, which is continually updated and has very dedicated staff, the extremely player vs player miriani, wayfare1444 where you are in charge of a space colony and must do lots of building and crafting and exploring, and the rather unique flux world which is set on an alien planet and again all about the exploration.I've also heard good things about the zombi themed epita ff, though not played it. Most of these muds have pages in the database where you can find more information, or have players and topics on the forum. Really, there is a lot by way of muds, so perhaps some idea of what sort of thing you fancy might be nice, combat, exploring, fighting other players, doing quests, role playing or whatever.@Mirage, I'd say Aardwolf is a little more combat orientated than alter, and somewhat more structured, with one quest for each area and lots of random "kill this monster" type of quests, indeed while there are a few secondary activities in Aardwolf like laser tag, they tend to still be very combat heavy. Aardwolf I also found rather complex with the equipping and stat balancing which is less my thing and why I didn't continue with my char, though obviously this is something people vary on. Materiamagica is harder to get into than Alter I think, and also rather less structured, I've hea rd the combat can get really! complex with different skills etc, though in the newbie areas I tried it wasn't so bad. I think they're making the game rather more newbie friendly than when I tried, sinse finding the quests etc was something of a pain when I played, particularly given the massive! size of the world.I actually need to try mm again and see if I can get further into the game now lots of the less friendly stuff has been ironed out. Re: good muds Aardwolf and Materia Magica are a lot like Alteraeon. Each one has lots of unique classes from which to choose, and interesting quests and areas. Really, there is a lot by way of muds, so perhaps some idea of what sort of thing you fancy might be nice, combat, exploring, fighting other players, doing quests, role playing or whatever.
