Re: turning off laptop screen?

As I said in my previous message, I use the closed lid method when I'm at home and the laptop is connected to its port replicator. The nice thing about the method is that when ever you need a screen for a sighted assistant, all you have to do is open the lid.The one gotcha the closed lid method has is you can't use it when you are mobile. For that I usually just ignore the display. If battery life becomes an issue, I use the blue Fn + F8 method to switch to an external monitor. Now if only I had a utility that would speak the current setting of the monitor switch.

Re: turning off laptop screen?

I discovered the closed lid trick by accident. I bought a laptop that has a very uncomfortable keyboard to type on. Realising that I would not be able to get a refund for the laptop, I had to go and buy a keyboard to use with it. Then one day I was running very low on battery power. I thought that one way to save the laptop's life would be to turn off the screen. I did not know of the projector trick, so I did what I could at the time, and I am still using this trick to this day.

Re: turning off laptop screen?

Yeah... Seems that whether the projector trick works or not is dependent on your graphics abilities. In my case, my computer refuses to turn off the display unless it detects an HDMI connection. Unfortunately I have no VGA port. I recently read that there's a device that plugs into the HDMI port and tricks it into thinking there's a display present for this exact same purpose, and which runs for about fifteen bucks on Amazon. I may or may not go for it... I think I'll probably go for the closed lid approach first.

Re: turning off laptop screen?

I think there are some programs that can still turn off the display, but only until you press a key or move the mouse/touch the trackpad. I wonder if someone could write a program to create a fullscreen, completely black window, and set it to always be on top, so that it would cover everything else. I don't know if it'd work, but it might be worth trying, if nothing else works.

Re: turning off laptop screen?

I think the issue here is that Locutus is using Windows 10. I tried this trick yesterday in my Windows 10 VM,, and I noticed that the screen flickers off for 200 milliseconds or so, then comes back on. Even if I keep the new settings, the screen stays on. True, it is running in a VM, but I don't have a copy running unvirtualized to test with ATM.Too bad. I ALSO used to use this trick in Win7.

Re: turning off laptop screen?

Hi.I always use the trick with the projector option, i use this when I am for example doing finantial things, so if someone comes in to the room, they don't see anything. Yeah shure, some might say that I am strange, but I am just taking precautions. That thing with the external keyboard is also good, it just takes up a lot more space for working, even more if you have an 17 inch laptop.

When you say your old method is gone, what are you doing? In windows 10, I have successfully done this by pressing windows + P then changing  the option to projector only. It will worn you that no projector was found, but just press Keep changes. I could be wrong, but it still works fine for me.

Re: turning off laptop screen?

What I do is leave the screen settings alone so that it is usable during those rare moments when I need sighted help. I go into the power settings and set the action for when the lid is closed to "Do Nothing". Most laptops have a built in switch that turns off the screen when the lid is closed. If you prefer to keep the lid open, you could try pressing the blue "Fn" key that most laptops have plus "F8". On Most laptops this key toggles between using the built in screen or an external monitor or both. When the toggle is set to external monitor, your built in screen will turn off.Note that you may want to check your laptop's manual. Most, if not all, laptops have a screen toggle key as I described, but it may not be the blue "Fn" plus "F8" keys.hth

I'm going to assume you are using a laptop since you didn't actually specify whether your Windows machine was a desktop or a laptop. Re: turning off laptop screen?

It always amazes me how well people read The OP has clearly stated he is in fact NOT using a mac any more, and closing your laptop's lid ... I suppose that could work but i'm not sure if your screen actually turns itself off if you set it to 'do nothing' in Power Settings.I use a little program called Dimmer which does make the brightness a lot lower but it has a bug where the system tray is still glowing for some reason. Apart from that it works reasonably well ...if you find something better I'd love to hear about it. There's a theoretical approach I've thought of which involves the old VGA trick, but through an HDMI-VGA adapter. Bending two pins on the VGA plug , can't remember off the top of my head which ones, so they touch gives the pc the idea there's a monitor attached when there isn't. You can't pul this off with H
DMI on both sides because there's a digital check involved, but VGA on one end might just be good enough to trick it. Not making any promises as I haven't tried this myself yet. Yet another hardware solution is to get an EDID emulator cable which pretty much does the same thing for as far as your situation is concerned ...these aren't cheap though..Zersiax

Re: turning off laptop screen?

Hello. To turn off the screen in a Windows working machine, either laptop or desktop, press windows+p and choose projector only. The computer will tell you that no projector was found, press on keep changes. And since there's no projector, enjoy having your screen completely off. This will let you save at least 1 or 2 battery working hours and even more,, because a large part of the battery usage comes from using the screen.Hope this works for you!

Re: turning off laptop screen?

Something that I've found to work well is to connect an external keyboard, either wired or wireless, to the computer. After this, you can use this keyboard and then adjust it so that when the lid of the computer is closed, nothing happens. For the Mac, if you use VoiceOver, remember that there is Screen Curtain as well.

Re: turning off laptop screen?

Try using device manager to turn it off.You can find device manager by typing device into search, and once your in the tree view of devices, go to monitors, and the one you want will probably be called generic PNP monitor, go to the applications menu and pick disable, then yes.At least thats how it works on 7... I dont have much experience with 8.
