Re: Sengoku Jidai: does anyone play this?

I'd have to recheck, a little more, since it's a long while since I played the game, but confusion was mostly my major feeling I'm afraid.I think this should be my signature, since it's an appropriate response to just about everything I do.Re: sounds, what I didn't own I recorded myself (hence, the terrible footsteps). Hadi gave me a free soundpack that I used to replace some of the worst combat sounds, but I couldn't really replace much. They're not encrypted or anything. If someone wants to mod, let them mod.I do like the block sounds, on the grounds that have you heard stock sword impact sounds? They're all clang, but so soft, like the combatants forgot they were trying to kill each other! Sure, mine are just me whacking a steel swiffer handle and a piece of 3/4in PVC together, captured with a toddler's karyoke mic, but at least you could believe that would have hurt someone had it hit flesh.(What? You don't actually need to hit that hard with a sword, and actually should generally aim for a specific power level to optimize the cut? Oh, fine; replace pipehit and pipeblock with dainty clangy, if you insist. )But yeah, it needs to be more organized overall. Currently requires way too much micromanagement.

Re: Sengoku Jidai: does anyone play this?

Less characters to worry about would be nice, also if they could auto assign themselves based on their situation. Also, how do you guys feel about the sound? Personally, and according to my memory, it sounds a little dry, and not exactly the type of sounds that I would associate with a game about japanese people, but maybe that's just me. Not that they don't accomplish their purpose, they probably do. Just feels a little bit generic I guess, but I dont say this to knock the game. It is a great concept, especially the idea of playing through some japanese history sounds intriguing because few audiogames if any do this at all, just feel like sounds could be better.

Re: Sengoku Jidai: does anyone play this?

As I remember Cae, my main issue with the game was giving you control over so dam many characters, all of whom had japanese names got rather confusing, especially when directing them to do things, EG wander around the map and gather food or items. It might be a little better if the game worked a bit more like castaways, with you able to look through job assignments and get more of a map overview, or at least for those people not on exclusively military duties to be taken off direct control. I'd have to recheck, a little more, since it's a long while since I played the game, but confusion was mostly my major feeling I'm afraid.

@6: thumbs up. It's frustrating how much easier it is to get violent games sharable compared to exploration games, but the complexity in building the latter is a lot higher. And then half the time it turns into the JFIMA anyway, though I guess you don't actually have to kill any humans there ... it's implied that the Tengas sometimes die? ... Who'm'I kidding; nobody's played that game long enough to fight Tengas.

Re: Sengoku Jidai: does anyone play this?

The multiplayer element is desperately broken, but that's OK because there isn't a stable server. If I update it, I'm changing the ninja weapons to be less OP. I tried doing a recording yesterday after this thread (it was too boring to save), and over half my deaths were "and then you died somehow, silently." As I recall, the blow-dart is way more powerful than it has any business being, and doesn't pretend to do anything but damage, when it really should be a random damage, fatigue/hunger inducing effect. But more importantly, the AI is crap at resource management. You can distribute food through campsites because I got tired of the AI being so bad at feeding itself and couldn't get it to do so correctly. I suppose the one interesting thing I found during that recording was a group of enemy troops that were standing around, even though they were starving, because one guy kept shouting at them to stay. So I took out that guy, and they were free to go get food. Then I died, but whatever.I have no idea how to improve castle construction, but that aspect desperately needs to be better. Taking suggestions, I guess.

@7 I think 2.6 is actually the latest version. I could be wrong though. It would be cool if you could continue development  on this game--it's the only audiogame of its kind that I know of on PC. Admittedly I'm more of a single player and probably won't really appreciate the work that goes into the multiplayer aspect of the game, but having a game like this to play is cool.

I don't play this game, simpley because I hate killing other people, Japanese people in particular. It's not that I can't stand killing, I just don't like games wear the goal is to kill, kill, kill... Games like the Bokurano Dibouken series, Manamon, Pokemon, and other games are fine. The only ones I really hate are games wear you get on a server and shoot people with guns.

Sadly as you said, the game very much remained in beta, and it wasn't for example clear when your various people were doing things or what messages were going where. Like many of Cae Jones projects, the idea behind this is awesome, the execution really good, but it just needs a bit more work on the interface, events and general coherence to be really playable.

Sengoku Jidai: does anyone play this?

So I decided to do a search for samurai audiogames. Naturally a Google search came up with audiogame hub and the blind Samurai for ANdroid. Then I recalled someone mentioning the only PC samurai audiogame around right now and went looking. It seems like a really cool game--so sad it never made it out of the beta stage. Like the story of Castaways 2, which is way more atmospheric than its predecessor, but I digress. Does anyone play Sengoku? Any tips for playing? And a bit off the subject of this post, does anyone still play DLE? Is there a way to get playing with a linear story or is it all about the cool game play?

Re: Sengoku jidai

@Milos, you don't specifically need bgt for any bgt game anymore. Time was you needed to have it installed to play some games created with it, but that's not been the case for quite a while. @Cae  it was more a general problem of knowing what was going on, who was where and who was doing what where, than starvation specifically, the game seemed to have a lot of stuff going on but not a lot of ways of controlling said stuff or actually getting an overview of things more generally so that you could play strategically, it was more a matter of information overload plus random occurrences, particularly since last I checked there wasn't a way to payse the clock to give you time to specifically examine the map or any Time of conflict style "nearest x to y" type of setup that would've let you get more of an overview. I admit though,  this was quite some time ago and notifications might have changed, I just recall the second I sta
rted playing as one person I kept getting random notes of what a hole bunch of other people were doing, mostly starving . Perhaps a tutorial or game guide might help to give a more specific idea of what is happening where?

Re: Sengoku jidai

That is very weird and points toward a bug in BGT itself. :-/ I'd talk to Philip about it if he was still supporting the engine. I'll try to hunt down the problem, if I can. The more information I have, the better.I've tried to do more to prevent people randomly and constantly starving, since that is the bit which annoys me the most. It hasn't happened to me much lately, but lately I've been running off and doing dangerous things more quickly, so maybe I haven't really improved it that much after all.Aside from those stability tweaks and a few more notifications, the only additions you might have missed would be a couple more information keys (shift+f checks hunger levels throughout your population, k gives a list of recent deaths and their causes, b summarizes the last minute of battle).

What's the status of this game currently? Last I tried it still looked a little beta ish, mostly the problem had to do with the fact that you had god knows how many people wandering around the map and keeping track of what the hell any of them were doing was nearly impossible, indeed most people seemed to die of starvation randomly while I was still getting my baring and working out who was where. Maybe i'm just thick, or perhaps the game has changed? I did mean to add a db page, but slightly forgot, so perhaps some words about how the game works would be helpful here.

Only the people near you obey your orders. Some of them might relay orders to people near them, but I wouldn't rely on that.Building castles is weird. It works better with boulders and holes because you can move boulders, but it really should be more doable with trees, what with Japanese castles being primarily wood-based. I'm not really sure how to improve it; I've thought about a few different ways of doing it, but I don't know if any of them is worth implementing in the game as it currently is.

Re: Sengoku Jidai 2.6 (+Kamikaze map)

cae, I have some ideas for sengoku jidai. it took me a bit to figure out basic things but even then combat is a beast. as far as I can tell there is no system for selecting from a list of visible targets someone you wish to attack. that takes care of one of my ideas-- make that possible. another one is make the ordering system not only selective but location selective. for example, find food in a range of coordinates such as 10 west, 5 north, 5 east, and 5 south. in other words, make a ranged system, for example if I want my army in hearing distance while carying out my orders without the need to switch characters. also, on island training is there a way to make those first 2 enemies stay pput so new players can at least find them? also, is there a map editer? while looking through a sj topic that is old you said something about a hidden map editer I have done every conceivable set of keystrokes to access it that I have seen before, including aprones castaways cheat an
 d got nothing...

Re: Sengoku Jidai 2.6 (+Kamikaze map)

I tried recording a walkthrough. It turned out pretty poorly, and Sound Tap kept breaking it up.Also, it seems there is another spot somewhere in there where the timer does not stop appropriately, which I only discovered because I had the game paused so much when trying to explain things. The real issue that made it poor, though, is that Im not actually sure what to explain and what not. (Im not much at explanations. )Changes I want to make (do not let me flake out on these):- Food is still handled pretty poorly. To be more specific, people arent sharing enough, and samurai wind up starving.- Not enough trees in ocean districts. I figure I should mess with some islands to make boulders and trees in at least small numbers so you can build more boats/houses/tiny fortifications (cant add enough to make proper castles, I think...).
 - (I have a nonessential idea on how to get more horses by taking a woodaxe to a garden to turn it into a stable. Worth it?)- I want to implement Darks tutorial map suggestions. That was sort of the idea behind the map with the bay, except this needs to be even better. Im thinking you start out with a well-fed village (so you cant just harvest their vegetables for them and expect them to follow you), and you sequentially need to protect them from some bandits (so you can get items to give them without arming them; you dont want a peasant uprising, after all), then have you arrange some boulders to try and get a castle going. Then slay a small time Daimyou and upgrade yourself with the Tome of Honor, or something. Maybe I can use a quest item here to fit a small military campaign into this same map, but thatd be kinda annoying.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewto

[Audiogames-reflector] Sengoku Jidai 2.6 (+Kamikaze map)

2014-03-01 Thread AudioGames.net Forum — New releases room: CAE_Jones

Sengoku Jidai 2.6 (+Kamikaze map)

Patch:https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/165 … _patch.zipFull download:https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/165 … uJidai.zipSo, I fixed and tweaked a few things. The biggest change is the addition of the Kamikaze map, which was not supposed to be as suicidal as it sounds, but totally is. (There are a few more new things; see the change log.)Basically, it occurred to me that I tend to prefer playing on the ocean maps, because theres less clutter, its easier to keep track of everyone, and occasionally the layout is interesting and you can actually step back and strategize/explore meaningfully. So I decided to add a mode where you only play on an ocean map.Except, instead of leaving it there, I decided to add bosses. Our own Shitennoh (4 heavenly emperors), led by Kublai Khan.I might have overdone it a little. Ive managed to kill Kublai a few times, but these guys leave so much raw firepower behind, and have so much endurance, that the map is way too dangerous to really stop and explore. For now, Im calling this the insane-level mission. If no one can handle it, Ill try and tone down the Shitennoh.Oh, and just to be fair, I gave everyone in this mission extra food, so you can focus on the not getting slaughtered part.Heres the full changelog since 2.5:--2.6 12:46 AM 3/1/2014* Attacking when in deep water should sometimes make water noise, and sometimes be a little slower.* Added a new item as a potential reward from scouting quests* Added the Kamikaze map to free mode. Its a standard randomly-generated ocean map, but it is also being invaded by the Shitennoh, led by Kublai Khan. They are mighty, and each of the 4 bosses is supposed to be somewhat unique (Japanese puns, sorta). Hopefully they dont die in stupid scenery-related accidents before you get to fight them.* Sushi now gives you a random health boost. Too much reliance on yasai, so I decided to mix it up a little.* Kudamono (fruit) now restores lots of stamina.* If you start out in an ocean map, you will at least start on a boat.* Adjusted the Kamikaze mission so that your shogun starts out with extra health and food.--2.5.1 5:47 PM 9/23/2013* Caught a couple more menus without waits.* Fixed the character view menu (v) so that the timer pauses! Originally, if you left the game there for several minutes, you were likely to starve and die as soon as you closed the menu!* Added new server address to the list (thanks Guilevi!)* Ocean camps now have a campsite instead of fire.--2.5 8:41 AM 9/23/2013* When upgrading Samurai to Daimyou, they can now take a few followers, to better organize your forces.* Made some changes to the Surrounded district quest to make the invaders more capable, especially in the ocean.* Attempted to catch the case where just-out-of-sight samurai will contradict your orders because they cant tell they came from you. Orders should now flow from above a little better.* Trying to make multiplayer alliances work better. Currently, shoguns cannot form alliances in any mode, but hopefully this fix will enable temporary alliances in multiplayer by sending requests when trying to recruit other players.* Noticed that the loop for looking around by tile causes other windows applications to lag, and fixed it.(You know, maybe I should have started by adding a simpler map. Like, one where you can practice fighting in a one-on-one duel, or something.)URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=166945#p166945

Re: Sengoku Jidai 2.6 (+Kamikaze map)

Yeah, so I decided to go ahead and add a simpler map. The Island Training map should be much easier, especially if youre having trouble with combat. Youre supposed to start out in a duel, but your opponent may well just walk away if you wait too long. Just east of the training room is a campsite, some gardens, and a pond with a small patch of trees. One Samurai and one Shinobi are in these areas, and wont be so aggressive; its a practice area, after all.You can join up with your loyal samurai across the water to the east (you should definitely take a boat), at which point you should have little trouble taking the rest of the map. It consists of one long island to the north, with a well baricaded castle on the east side, and smaller islands scattered to the east.Feel free to use the scrolls you win from your training opponents to trade at the campsites.I dont know why I didnt do something like this in the first plac

I dont know if you planned a castaways style stop clock, but that would really help.Either way, glad there is now a training mission. i always meant to give the game a db entry, Ill see if I can now that it is updated.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=166964#p166964

A bit of warning: the training map doesnt come with much instruction; its more of an easy-mode contrived practice setup.Another thing Im thinking about adding (its not as trivial as it seems, having not done it from the ground up this way), is making the character list you get with v play a sound at the characters positions, the same as the tile-by-tile examination. Ah, well that unfortunately was part of my problem since before I got an idea of how things worked people were already doing stuff and it seemed you couldnt really overview but needed to go from one character. In some ways I wonder if the game would be easier ifb you started with only a couple of people and then built up slowly, rather than starting with half an army. perhaps have a mode in which you were a single samurai supported by a small village of 10 or 12 peasants, then another mode in which you played as a damio with similarly less escalation before you got to the maps with goodness knows how many people to control, since that was always my problem, between working out the map and finding out what all those random people were doing and how best to instruct them things just seemed quite confusing.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=1

I have pretty much given up on this game. But well, games are not made to be enjoyed by everyone. there should be games for different people, so Im slowly accepting that I just cant get into the game very well. Thats one of the very few games Ive given up on, but Im pretty much okay with that, because there should be games for everyone. So, keep up the good work, and I really hope a lot of people enjoys the new update. the game still sounds really cool, and I hope Im one of the few who find the game that much confusing.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=166989#p166989

Well Slj I agree on the confusion, and yes it might just be a matter of personal choice however personally based on the fact that Ive had success with other stratogy games such as time of conflict, sound rts and castaways, I do wonder if perhaps there are some game elements or matters of explanation that would help the game be less confusing and thus open it to a wider audience. I really like the concept of the game, and the fact that it has so many elements from spying and collecting food to combat, and even a system of nobles, the use of sounds is also a good idea and makes the games atomsphere wonderfully desolation desolate, and I love the idea of the multiple map types and terrain, I just wish there was a little more by way of knowing what was going on rather than being overloaded with information and a huge amount of things all happening at once while your trying to achieve something standard such as exploring the map or
looking through your team or just trying to get a basic grasp of the game.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=166993#p166993

That is kinda odd; there might be some tomes on some of the premade maps (the multiplayer map I think has a few tomes), but Im not sure.Heres a small update:https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/165 … _patch.zipTwo of the changes are for rare things (the Tome of Honor and one of the scouting quests have been tweaked a little), the other two are a bit more noticeable. The first one should be immediately apparent: its now less likely that your underlings will contradict your orders when your forces are spread out. Something that was causing problems before was the case where youd give orders, then someone would wander out of sight of you, but not of everyone else, so theyd see someone following your new orders and try to correct them. That should no longer happen; if the orders come from above, instead of contradicting, the out-of-sight people will obey as well! The other will require one of the servers to test. Previously, players uncovered an issue with forming alliances in multiplayer; the game wasnt distinguishing players from non-players well enough that you could form a no friendly fire, shared leadership alliance with player Shoguns. Now, if you try to get a player Shogun to join you, theyll be sent a message asking them if they want to join. An important detail, here, is that the shogun receiving the power will become a daimyou subject to the shogun making the request.I havent tested this feature, though, since both the servers appear to be down.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=149518#p149518

Re: Sengoku Jidai version 2.4

Hello! I discovered this game only yesterday! It was confusing however I am getting used to it. I looked all the things said on this topic here, but still, there is a thing that I cant figure out. When I start a free map, I have a few samurai but no daimyo. I give something to the neutral people and they start becoming cyvilians, some of the shinobu start following me after I give them food, some are not interested etc. But, can I make a samurai become daimyo? I want to do that in order to divide them, as I can only order different things to shinobu, samurai and cyvilians or everyone, as I dont have any daimyo. I think I would need at least one, so that I can send him in one place and I can go with the rest of the samurai to another place... Or I can make the shogun safe somewhere with a few samurai to guard him and command the daimyo to lead the groups in a battle... So, how to do that?Best regards Cae, and keep up the good work!URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=148951#p148951

Did you hear the runtime error type? Im guessing its an index out of bounds (though I thought Id taken care of all of those ), but just to be sure...[edit] actually, Im surprised you didnt get line numbers. That would have helped much more. Were those removed from the stack trace in BGT 1.3? That strikes me as unlikely, but maybe its something to do with the debug vs release feature.[/edit]URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147950#p147950

You can eat yasai (press enter on gardens to harvest some), kudamono (sometimes falls out of trees when they are struck), or sushi (catch with nets on water or boats).Use them from your inventory to eat.You can also give extra to other people, whether to recruit independents or to help keep your followers from going hungry. Re: Sengoku Jidai version 2.2

Updated to 2.4.Mostly just bug fixes. Ive put in the beginnings of something new and awesome, but time will tell if it ever gets usable.Full link: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/165 … uJidai.zipPatch: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/165 … _patch.zipChange log for this version:* Upgraded to bgt1.3* AI-controlled characters now get twice as much from eating. Really tired of them starving all the time.* Earthquakes should now happen about half as often. Still watch out for those, but they should be much less annoying now.* Hitting trees with the woodaxe now defaults to building houses for players; hold shift to build castle walls instead, which also affects surrounding tiles, and costs more food/fatigue.* Boats should now be able to travel through shallow water as well, though this only really matters on some unique maps at the moment.* Slowed down the max speed a little, since it seems like it might be related to the getting stuck bug.* Civilians can now randomly start with the ihatsu, woodaxe and Hammer.* The death reports now clear on game over.* If you use the steal command as a shinobi, not only will nearby shinobi start trying to steal stuff, but you will try to steal things from anyone near you. Be warned, though; they wont like it if they notice you!* Tried to fix the people not following orders bug. It has been improved, but still seems to pop up from time to time! Arg!I havent actually tested the thieving yet, so for all I know, theres a horrible error in there. But people should follow your orders most of the time, at least. (The one big exception is in the district you start in in the multiplayer map. I finally just gave up on that one and use that part of the army for raw materials for other districts where recruits will actually obey.)I also completely forgot this detail that I only rediscovered when looking for issues with the orders: if onf or your allies thinks theyve found enough food when that is their mission, there will be a high-pitched chime from their position, and theyll revert to at ease (or return to base, if one is set). If, though, there are other people nearby that are still searching for food, theyll probably peer-pressure them into looking some more right away.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=145990#p145990
