AFAIK, when EAC rips a CD it only extracts the raw PCM data. The subcode information which determines things such as Index points (if the CD has them), emphasis, and track sequencing is omitted. A CD copy using NERO, OTOH, would preserve all the above, of course burned into a CD-R. A completely different process. So, when using an external DAC with the SB3 the subcode information will not be present. My small collection of early emphasized discs ripped the conventional way would play excessively bright. The solution is to de-emphasize them prior to encoding to FLAC... -- crooner Squeezebox 3 with Power One Linear Power Supply Lite Audio DAC60 tube DAC Pioneer SX-1980 Vandersteen 2Ce Signature Vandersteen 2W crooner's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3379 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22301 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I'm a bit flummoxed by reports that until now it was difficult to get a regulated linear psu for the Squeezebox in the UK. Doesn't this one fit the bill? [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Coax or Optical
I accidently found my power amplifiers humming when first switching off my D/A converter! This only happens with the Squeezy connected via Coaxial. Changing the phase of the power supply or the edge connectors never get rid of the problem but changed its quality all the time. I definitely have a grounding problem with the Squeezy connected. So i took a Pulse isolating transformer of an old 3Com 10base2 card and put it in front of my D/A converter. Now all humming is gone and as far i can tell atm it sounds as it always should have. I have a cold these days and not the best hearing. I start to think much of the modded Squeezys mostly benefit of adding a transformer if your D/A converter doesn´t have one already build in. @P Floding May you give this a try? -- Wombat Wombat's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4113 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21775 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] where to buy 1748KE DAC
As I was interested to buy a 1748KE DAC I could only find them at digikey. But buying just one would be too expensive because of the handling and shipping costs. So I bought some more and have 8 to sell. I just couldn't leave well enough alone, so out of curiosity, I started reading more about jitter. What I learned is that one way to reduce jitter produced by CD transports is to bypass the SPDIF output altogether, which sends PCM data serially, and instead, use an I2S connection. Of course, one would need a DAC that can accept I2S, but those are available apparently. Anyway, my question really is whether the SB3 converts I2S-SPDIF, and if so, can one then mod the SB3 to bypass the SPDIF and use the I2S? There aren't a lot of cable choices either, as it's intended to be used in one-box players. ezkcdude Wrote: Anyway, my question really is whether the SB3 converts I2S-SPDIF, and if so, can one then mod the SB3 to bypass the SPDIF and use the I2S? Judging from Seans post I linked on page 9, it's sent to the internal dac as spdif. The conversion is obviously well implemented from the jitter measurements, so doubtfully worth dorking with- especially if your DAC doesn't have I2S input. Before I got SB my plan was to buy the CDpro2 transport and DIY a one box player, in order to take advantage of I2S. Hearing the SB made me forget all about those plans. -- Skunk Skunk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2685 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22301 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Sean's previous post makes more sense to me now, and it sounds like they have tried to make the SPDIF as good as possible. I think the problem is that no matter how good it is implemented on the way out, it still needs to be received, and broken down again to feed the DAC. -- ezkcdude SB3-Derek Shek TDA1543/CS8412 NOS DAC-MIT Terminator 2 interconnects-Endler Audio 24-step Attenuators (RCA-direct)-Parasound Halo A23 125W/ch amplifier-Speltz anti-cables-DIY 2-ways + Dayton Titanic 10 subwoofer He's not hi-fi, he's my stereo. ezkcdude's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2545 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22301 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: where to buy 1748KE DAC
For anyone who has the guts to try, this is how I did it, two times succesfully: To remove the old dac first add solder on both sides of the dac. Next heat up one side and carefully pull up the dac a little. Do the same on the other side and so on until you can remove the dac. Do not use force, that will destroy the pads on the motherboard. When the dac is removed, clean the pads with solder wick (see picture). Place the new dac exactly on the motherboard and when in place ad some solder on one or two pinns at one side. Now take a close look to be sure the dac is in place. If so, ad solder on both sides of the dac. It doesn't matter if the solder is shorten all pinns. Now remove the solder between the pinns with the Solder Wick. If done check and double check that everything is ok and that there is no connection between the pinns. Also be carefull not to heaten up the dac too much! +---+ |Filename: sb1748ke.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1107| +---+ -- Amauta Amauta's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2669 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22442 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
