It sounds like the PC resamples everything to 48kHz, or does your DAC
indicate otherwise?

I'd like to do this comparison as well, but after nixing kmixer and
using toslink from my cheap soundcard to my cheap DAC, which the
Squeezebox usually feeds via coax s/pdif.

Triode posted a plugin in the developers forum recently, which
generates square waves and such. Maybe I can somehow feed the DAC into
my Maudio external soundcard and measure something using the
computer(?). Does anyone have advice on testing without a scope?

At any rate, it was nice to read about your experience. Cheers.

A buffer, such as a pre-amp may well improve sound if it presents a
lower impedance to the next stage (normally a power amp). A passive
pre may instead degrade sound by makeing the audio signal dependent on
the input impedance of the next stage.

More precise terms than busy might be random or noisy. I believe
totally random data would sound like white noise and compress
negligibly or not at all. I suspect instrumentation or effects that
more closely resemble white noise reduce the incidence of data patterns
that would offer opportunities for any lossless algorithm to compress.

definitely DO benefit from a warm-up AND break-in/burnin time. This is
something that is measureable.

As for speaker cables, from what i've read, the general consensus is
that any perceived diffrence in quality after a break-in time is
primarily placebo and/or simply due to your ears adapting to the

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Review in Hi-Fi News (UK)

2007-03-19 Thread Jaco

Hi Sean,

Thank you for the informative reply regarding jitter in the
Transporter. Given that so much attention is given to the jitter in the
design of the Transporter and that the results measured by the Miller
test aren't really relevant, then the results of the Hifi News review
still begs the following questions:

1. What was the cause of the very noticeable difference between the
streaming and DAC modes? Qouted directly from the review: In
stand-alone DAC mode the Transporter sounded crisper and musically more
insightful and involving, whereas via the network connection leading
edges were fudged, tempos dragged and the sound became altogether less
gripping. Why this should be I can only speculate on but the difference
was plain to hear.

2. Why would there be such a remarkable difference in audio quality of
the Transporter vs. the Townshend Audio TA565 CD player? Quoted
directly from the review: The TA565 majors on being audio Windowlene,
clarifying telling microdynamic and acoustic details which many other
players smudge. As, indeed, does the Transporter. In fact the
comparison was not unlike that between the Transporter in streaming and
DAC modes. [...snip...] You could hear the difference in a split
second,...

ask beause when I installed Cardas Golden reference speaker cables they

don't sound that way, or rather the system doesn't sound that way... So
I'm hearing things?? I guess this is an argument that can't be won.

Hello, i have managed to make my computer a good digital source (IMHO).
I'm using a Marian Trace Pro soundcard -
http://www.marian.de/en/products/trace_pro - which costs about $450 and
has AES EBU digital outputs the go into a TACT RCS digital preamp. I
find it slightly better than the Squeezebox, especially in the bass
region. As for digital noise caused by the computer considered by some
people as a hostile environment, not a trace. In your sentence the
words suppose , probably and impossible show that your opinion is
made before testing, probably influenced by your Audigy experience. If
you can try a pro soundcard i think you will change your mind. If the
idea of the soundcard inside the PC doesn't appeal to you, you still
have the option of taking a pro USB or Firewire (better) soundcard. I
love my Squeezebox but browsing the music collection is faster and
easier in the PC and you avoid the little drawbacks of the SB: omitting
some tracks, sometimes slow response.
Best regards, Jean.

Ultimate Ears

I own a pair of the Etymotic ER-6i's which I love to bits. I wear them
on long-haul flights and I can even sleep with them in. They have the
ability to block out up to 36db which is a lot more than some others,
and they don't need batteries. The sound is superb, although not quite
as full as my AudioTechnica ATH-A900's. Still, for the size they're
superb and good value.

Let us know how you get on!

There is no such consensus.

Suppose such a thing were true. In order to make an audible
difference, the changes would have to be relatively large - in general,
we can measure changes in the electrical characterstics of a circuit
with far greater precision than we can hear the results of such changes
in an audio chain. Countless physics experiments rely on incredibly
precise measurements. All those experiments use electrical equipment,
much of which is constructed in the lab using (good quality, naturally)
off the shelf components. Such things as miniscule static charges, tiny
little breaths of air, slight vibrations caused by distant traffic or
someone walking three corridors away can affect the resuls of these
experiments and must be dealt with. We're talking about *incredibly*
tiny effects here. These experiments are often conducted in a hard
vacuum and cooled to a few miliKelvin above absolute zero, because
otherwise disturbances in the air and thermal noise would drown out the
signal.

And yet I have never once heard of anyone in such an experiment having
a problem with changing electrical characterisitcs of a capacitor over
time (I'll ask some of my colleagues, just to be sure). How odd -
audiophiles must really have golden ears to be able to detect an effect
so small it can't be measured in state of the art experiments. I guess
those audiophiles had better seal their equipment in a vacuum chamber,
because they must be disturbed by tiny air currents too. Exactly how
they're going to hear anything in a liquid-helium cooled vacuum is a
bit of a conundrum... anyone sense a business opportunity?

Yes.

Jean,
That card looks like it might be optimized for microphones or at least
other balanced devices. Is there a way to get S/PDIF out to go to a

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Review in Hi-Fi News (UK)

2007-03-19 Thread seanadams

In fact the
comparison was not unlike that between the Transporter in streaming and
DAC modes. [...snip...] You could hear the difference in a split
 second,...

Have you considered the possibility that it is complete nonsense?

If you read the web page linked, it seems fairly obvious:

Digital Output
* XLR AES/EBU (balanced), galvanic isolated
* Output voltage: 3,5 Vss (with 110 Ohm)
* Samplerates: 28 kHz to 212 kHz (Single Wire Mode)

So, No.. it only has AES/EBU output, not normal S/PDIF

Ah, but strictly speaking, that's not adding anything to the audio

 - it's adding to the *digital* chain, and replacing part of the
 analogue

In that case, strictly speaking, you can only add things to the audio
chain before the microphone and after the loudspeakers. It's not as if
an electrical signal is sound.

Seems that this upgrade (the new unswitched power outlet) was more
significant for sound quality than I thought. The sound improvement has
been fundamental. Of course, it could all be placebo, but then again, we
might all be imaginary as well.

Robin was pointing out that you wouldn't be adding anything redundant,
like sending analog to a receiver that does AD|DSP|DA.

Adding a benchmark is completely different in that you still only have
one digital to analog conversion. Also, its marketing material suggests
any digital redundancy that might be added to the signal would be easily
overcome. I thought RB made a valid and craftily worded point.
