So before you expend a great deal of effort to reduce the jitter of the SB3's digital output, you need to verify that whatever levels of jitter are already present are indeed audible. There have been a number of well-conducted blind listening tests that seem to suggest that the effects of jitter do not become audible until the jitter is very high. For example, Benjamin Gannon's AES paper (preprint 4826) Theoretical and Audible Effects of Jitter on Digital Audio Quality concluded that jitter becomes audible at about 10 ns for a 20kHz frequency, and about 100 ns at 4kHz. What about transmission line effects, crosstalk, ground bounce, PLL instability or data-dependency? I'll grant that PSU noise is a factor, but to state that it's the biggest cause of jitter, without qualification, is misleading bordering on irresponsible. In a break with the usual Internet tradition, I'm going to back that up with some actual measurements. Here are pictures of the SPDIF outputs from the SB3, and from a Marantz CD63 CD player: SB3: [image: http://www.cawte.nildram.co.uk/Jitter/sb3.jpg] CD63: [image: http://www.cawte.nildram.co.uk/Jitter/cd63.jpg] Hopefully if nothing else, that puts the quality of the SB3's SPDIF output into perspective! The actual edges are actually a bit sharper than shown - a limitation of my scope's bandwidth - but I actually struggled to measure any jitter on it at all. Compare and contrast that with the output from the CD63, which suffers dreadful data-dependent jitter - most likely caused by penny pinching on a capacitor in the digital output stage. THIS is a machine on which jitter-reducing mods might well have a clearly audible effect. (That's not to say that the SB3 wouldn't benefit too - but it should now be obvious as to why any improvements are going to be minimal compared to the gains which might be made by modding other source components). -- AndyC_772 AndyC_772's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10472 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34749 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

It's always safe to apply formulae from transmission line theory to what is, undeniably, a transmission line. If it turns out to be a very short one, and therefore the effects of an impedance mismatch are very small, then that'll drop out of the equations. A 1 metre interconnect is NOT short, though. As per my previous post, something which even digital design engineers sometimes fail to properly grasp, is that it's not the data rate that matters, but the edge speed - dv/dt. The rise/fall time of the SB3's digital output is around 10ns, and the flight time of an edge along a 1m coax cable is about 4ns. Now consider exactly why an impedance mismatch might affect received jitter, bearing in mind that jitter is uncertainty about the timing of an edge at the receiver: Suppose a rising edge is driven by the SB3 into a poorly terminated transmission line. It propagates along the cable to the receiver, reflects off the impedance mismatch and heads back to the transmitter. After 4ns it reflects off the transmitter and starts heading back toward the receiver, so 8ns after the main edge has hit the receiver, a second, unwanted edge comes along and interferes with it. If you're lucky, the edge at the receiver has already crossed the 10 threshold, and the distorted wave shape is of no consequence. But, if your cable is the wrong length, this reflected signal eppears right when the receiver is trying to determine the timing of the 10 transition. Bad news. Note that this effect depends only on the cable length, the extent of the impedance mismatch, and the dv/dt of the edge, and NOT on the data rate. -- AndyC_772 AndyC_772's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10472 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34406 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

If it turns out to be a very short one, and therefore the effects of an impedance mismatch are very small, then that'll drop out of the equations. Changing the connector to one with a different resistance will change more than just the amount of reflections. For example its impedance (not considering reflections, just plain old circuit impedance) will filter the signal and affect the jitter spectrum. In some situations (probably including speaker cables and analogue interconnects) that could be much more important than any transmission line effects. A 1 metre interconnect is NOT short, though. As per my previous post, something which even digital design engineers sometimes fail to properly grasp, is that it's not the data rate that matters, but the edge speed - dv/dt. Note that this effect depends only on the cable length, the extent of the impedance mismatch, and the dv/dt of the edge, and NOT on the data rate. What you're saying here sounds like the standard treatment. The rise time, or the max dV/dt, is related to the max frequency present in the signal. If the cable is long compared to the wavelength associated with that max frequency, transmission line effects matter. The point is that 5MHz is the frequency of what is ideally a square wave, which contains arbitrarily large frequencies, and so for high harmonics even a meter cable is well into the transmission line regime. Therefore if reflections are significant one may expect the cable to introduce jitter at the few ns level - which of course matters only if the jitter at the SB output was less than that to begin with (which it is). ModelCitizen;197532 Wrote: nuhli... do I understand you correctly?... do you run a Bryston 4B ST (or SST) into OB1s with a Transporter? If so, can you get the volume extremely loud indeed? I want extreme volume. Yes you did, can you imagine that, completely the same except that I usually use the preamp. When I connected it without the preamp it was too loud for my taste even at the -14dB on the Transporter, jumper set at 0dB. But it's a small room so I understand if you needed max volume. It only got more dynamic as it was louder, thus I concluded that it does need a preamp, at least for this combo. If you want it extra-loud and above all more dynamic I recommend an active preamp trial then maybe you won't have to crank it up so much, it does make a big difference. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What mods on SB3 REALLY make a difference in reducing jitter?
In my case, the modded Elpac power supply made only a subtle difference. But, I have two power conditioners daisy chained with good power cords (Furman Power Factor Pro - Blue Circle Music Ring Balanced Power conditioner). Once, I got the Bolder digital mods the difference was clearly audible. I did not have to do any A/B or any measurements.I am a very cost conscious buyer (aka cheapskate :-) for eg I use a Panny XR55 receiver as the dac/amp) when it comes to spending. But I feel the $350 or so I spent on the mods for the SB is the best I have ever spent in an audio purchase. -- SoftwireEngineer SoftwireEngineer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7000 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34749 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What mods on SB3 REALLY make a difference in reducing jitter?
Well... get a portable AM radio and place it close to the SB's Unifive SMPS. Reception will be impossible. The FCC rules part 15C is very relaxed about RFI interference, unfortunately. This is the same FCC that also approved broadband over power lines, blacking out all the HF spectrum used for ham communications. Easy to get the picture here.. Audio signals are very delicate. A moving coil compatible phono stage (which is part of my system) is particularly sensitive to RFI pickup. Because of this, I'd avoid any switching kind of power supply. I am bi-amping Silverline Sonatinas with the Panny XR55. I have digital mods on my SB3+a modded Elpac. I am trying to use the inguz equalizer first, but I dont think it is really working. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What mods on SB3 REALLY make a difference in reducing jitter?
For what its worth, I've got switching supplies all throughout my house including one that near for my little XM radio player (myfi). None of them put out anyway near as much RF noise as this SB3 switching PS. Listening to AM is impossible. The internal PS in the SB3 are also noisy but not nearly as bad. The AM freq is now listenable. The SB3 is a crappy designed switching power supply that should be replaced! -- Max F Max F's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9464 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34749 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

What does putting a radio next to the power supply have to do with the sound produced by an SB3? Put your preamp next to the transformer of your power amp and it will hum. I'll bet the SB3 itself will interfere with radio reception if you put the radio next to the SB3. So what? As the old jokes goes,Doctor, it hurts when I do this to which the doctor replies don't do that! If you have a tuner sitting next to the SB3 power supply and you must listen to Paul Harvey, Rush Limbaugh, or big-haired weirdos begging for money because God needs it, then replace the power supply. Don't expect it to make the SB3 sound better, except by comparison of program content.
