Dedicated amp. Not sure I could go with that. having to change the SB
input to the main amp to the headphone amp all the time. The cables and
the sockets would get damaged over time.

Unless I keep the digital coax in the DAC and the standard outs to
the headphone amp? Would that work?

subchassis and armboard machined from a single piece of ally. This
means that there is *no flexibility whatsoever* between armboard and
subchassis.

Prior to this, Linn always used to claim that the reason why they used
apparently under-sized screws to attach the armboard to the subchassis

compliance at that point.

So which is it, Ivor?

While I agree that it probably doesn't make sense for Linn to build a
completely proprietary server approach, I do think they need to offer
more value on top of these open approaches they are suggesting. The
Linn GUI was very basic and seemed like a very limited effort given the
cost of the unit. Also, they should build a network of acceptable
ripping houses for their customers who might not want to do it
themselves. My overall take was that the launch will ill-conceived and
they are assuming the name will sell the device.

Don't get me wrong, I own some Artikulats, so I'm aware of the sticker
shock that comes with Linn products, but I can't justify the leap to
the Klimax from the Transporter given the lack of usability and the
fact that the pricing seems much more what their market will bear than
 COGS oriented.

Interestingly, I decided to buy a high-end system because of the
Transporter. I knew I could have my whole collection available
through one device. This justified the cost for me. I actually chose
the Aritkulats because they were fully activ and kept that minimalist

Not sure why you resent it. I don't have statistics to back it up,
but even going in blind, I'd bet big money you are not a typical Linn
customer if you rip your own and manage the tags, etc. I sat and
watched the Linn rep, the store owner, and a Linn customer who owned
every source they've made discuss ripping music at the most basic
level...and still getting some facts wrong. I suspect that's still
quite common. And, many folks with the money to blow on Klimax gear
probably don't see the time spent ripping worth wasting. The only
reason I do it is because I know I'd have to fix whatever a ripping
house would do anyway.

I wasn't confessing to anything. I was making it clear that I'm not
against Linn in any way by saying I own some of their pricey gear. I
didn't want to be taken as a basher because that isn't my angle at all.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Devolo / Homeplug - noise on the mains

2007-10-07 Thread TurnipMan

Hi,
I'm considering obtaining a set of Ethernet over mains devices as it
will simplify my home network. I do wonder if there is any impact on
other equipment plugged into the same mains circuit.
It is sometimes recommended to have a separate ring main for the Hi-Fi
to avoid interference from the fridge and the microwave. These network
devices must by their very nature put some signal / noise on the
circuit, but is it noticeable?
Has anyone had any experience?

Tom

Tom, I have a variety of these devices including homeplug, UPB and
X-10. I have tried listening both with and without and did not notice a
difference. That, of course, doesn't mean that there isn't noise, just
that I couldn't hear it.

OTOH, homeplug works by using Forward Error Correction - that is,
processing the data to add redundancy so that it can be recovered at
the destination without error. This adds latency to the data path, so
if you are using homeplug to distribute music, it is possible that the
receive buffer might run out occasionally.

I'd expect it's pretty unlikely you'd have a problem. These are
broadband devices operating in the hundreds of MHz. Something
motorized load like a bathroom fan would be far more likely to
introduce noise in the audible band, but even then it should not be a
concern with well designed AV equipment.

I would disagree on several counts:

- Homeplug doesn't have latency problems. It will have about the same
as RTT as wifi.

- FEC's purpose is actually to _decrease_ latency by reducing the
number of retransmissions needed to recover lost data. It does this at
the expense of using some additional bandwidth. It's essentially
analogous to RAID.

- Latency per se is not a problem for streaming. Only in the presence
of packet loss is latency a problem, and even then, only large amounts
like you'd have over long distances across the internet.

- Homeplug is actually fine for streaming music. Wifi is cheaper and
more widely available, but Homeplug is a fine choice if you can't get a
good wireless signal.
