Changing the source or the amp won't have any effect on the bass. If you want more bass you need bigger speakers, a subwoofer, or equalization. -- opaqueice opaqueice's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4234 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39679 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 Bolder Mods
Recently had one of my SB3s upgraded (basic digital only) by Bolder Cables so thought I'd share my experience. Rest of system is SB3 digital output to Lyngdorf DAC (part of TDA2200 amp) into Martin Logan Prodigies. I'm UK based. First off, and as I commented to the very helpful Wayne at Bolder, I struggled to hear any difference at all. But three weeks later . . . . . Perhaps it's the modified SB3 having broken in or it's my ears getting to know what to listen to, but over the past couple of nights I managed to stop trying to hear differences and just listened to the music. There are differences, subtle, but significant; 1) Detail retieval It's better, especially at low and mid frequencies. Bass extension remains the same as far as I can tell but more definition has been given to instruments like the acoustic double bass and kick drum - try Patricia Barber's Verse. It's now easier to hear the ambience of the recording venue - I swear I can now hear ceiling reflections that I didn't before for example. Listening to 10 New Songs from Leonard Cohen demonstrated that there is more character to the 70 something's voice whereas before it was almost like listening to an acoustically airbrushed vocal. On this record there are some very close harmonies from partners and backing singers which are now easier to follow. 2) Soundstage Might be a tad deeper but hard to say. It's certainly wider - the fill between speakers is better and there is less tendency for the image to be pulled to the moving coil base sections. Stage width now more often extends beyond the outer edge of the speakers. 3) Imaging One of the most noticeable changes. Best way I can describe it is that it has become a little more 3D. Before there was definitely substantial stage depth and good positioning, but often it sounded like 2 dimensional cardboard cutouts of performers had been placed in relation to each other. You could tell who was behind who but there was relatively little depth to each individual performer. That's now changed and you can almost sense the physical depth of instrument bodies or vocalists. Bottom line is that the whole setup has become even easier to listen to. The differences aren't night and day, and don't show up that well on A/B comparison, but just relax and you'll soon hear the difference. So thanks Wayne - now back to the music . . . . -- liffy99 liffy99's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7832 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39684 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 or Transpoter vs. DLNA receivers : sound quality
It has already started. Have a look at the Arcam FMJ MS250 probebly close to 5000 dollar. Here in the Netherlands it costs 4500 euro. http://www.arcam.co.uk/prod_fmj_ms250_intro.cfm Regarding DLNA. Before a bought my transporter I've considered buying a Denon AVR4306 when it first came out. I was giving the ability to test one at home for a few days. First of all the whole DNLA concept is nothing more than a protocol to share a folder on your PC which contains music files and to identify your player on the network, That#8217;s it! Especially when one has a considerable large music collection it#8217;s just undoable to work with it. I really tried to get the hang of it but after four days I gave up. To me DNLA concept is to limited to see the player as a full fletched music server. How different is Slimdevices approach. Immediately I felled right at home with the interface. For now Slimdevices is the only one that offers this level of usability. Regarding audio quality: The Denon at the time didn#8217;t support Flac. However WAV#8217;s sounded good, but what else is to be expected from a 2000 dollar amp. However I strongly believe my Transporter sounds considerably better. How well the transporter will perform next to the Arcam for example will hopefully be tested in the future. One thing I know for sure though. I won#8217;t consider any DNLA player above my Transporter even if it said Mark Levinson on the case. -- S2K S2K's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12675 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39550 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Annoying tick when fridge turns on/off
The noise comes from the compressor motor. When the fridge turns on there is a sudden, large inrush of current because the motor looks like a huge capacitor. That surge puts a transient spike on the power line that is finding it's way into your system. The best thing to do would be to separate the power circuits for the audio and the fridge. If you can't do that, you might try putting a line filter in either the audio or the fridge's power or both. No, I don't mean a $5k power regenerator that the audiophool shops sell for this sort of problem. I mean line filters like these: http://state-electronics.com/corcom/corcom2.asp maybe the K series parts. Surplus dealers often have these sorts of filters available for very low cost. Specs are not critical for your app. Just make sure the filter you get is rated for enough current to handle the load you will apply. Ouch ! But I stand by my own observations (and my other half, who doesn't listen anywhere near as much as I do, walked in and said that sounds clearer to a well-known track). I have tried using a linear power supply as opposed to the wall wart and could not reliably tell a difference so please don't think I'm suckered into psychologically induced improvements. I've been doing a lot of listening recently to various system changes (class T amps, bi-amping the Prodigies, substituting transformer wire for expensive hose pipe cables and more) so am getting used to spotting differences. As I said, to begin with I was disappointed in an A/B comparison but something has definitely changed in the three weeks I've been running a standard and modified SB3 side by side. Sure, perhaps the local power station has been having a really good fortnight all of a sudden and the mains is cleaner, but then I would have heard an improvement to the regular SB3 wouldn't I ? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Optical connection - inferior by default?
opaqueice;238369 Wrote: Pat, do you think it makes an audible difference? Going into a Benchmark DAC1 I can't hear any change; same with a NOS DAC I experimented with. That is actually a darn good question. A DAC that has all sorts of fancy reclocking and stuff may not sound much different with crappy interfaces. That is the purpose of all of that stuff, and why it costs more to implement. While the absolute amount of jitter may not be significantly worse for poor interfaces, the spectral distribution will be. And there is the key. Not all forms of jitter will sound exactly alike. Close-in jitter, or heavily data correlated will stand out more than random jitter, with an even spectral distribution. So, it will depend on the system. I know...sounds like a cop out, which leads to proliferation of brash statements like Well, I can't hear any difference, so it does not exist. With the Benchmark, I am not surprised. I talked to the guy from Audio Circle last night about how the modded unit sounded. He said that both transformer outputs were susbstantially better than stock, but they did not sound any different in relation to each other. He does have a fancy D/A box, with all of that fancy circuitry. So, from that, it seems plausible that gross interface problems are very audible, but minor ones are not. At least not on a fancy unit. As for the non-o/s one..I am not fond of them. Yes, they have a sound that appeals to many. I am not sure that they are capable of enough resolution to enable you to tell for sure. So, any thoughts regarding that one would be a pure guess. Based partially on bias, so I could be mistaken. Part of the misconception about the usefullness of optical interfaces comes from the bits is bits assumption. Even the poorest of TOSLINK connections will pass data, and probably at 99.99% accuracy. But that is a far cry from being able to extract the clock with a minimal amount of jitter. One of the problems comes from pulse dispersion. An optical output will have mulitple spectral lines, that travel at just a slightly different velocity, due the minute differences in the paths it takes to reach the RX end. This spreads out the pulse, which of course, mucks up the rise time. (And other stuff.) When things get interesting is when you pick the fibre up, and start to move it around! Yeah, I knowhow likely is that to happen when you are listening to music. Well, that happens to a lesser degree when it is just sitting there. When we were in the evaluation stages of that big fibre install, we fought amoung ourselves constantly over how the best way was to come up with a measurement for pulse dispersion. Single-mode fibre is NOT designed to work under 1 km or so. We were never able to resolve whether or not we could put 1 km of fibre on a spool, or if it had to be spread all over the lab, similar to how it would be in the field. Ah...but that would still require some bending of the fibre. Anyway...while we continued to argue about it, the system went in. We eventually sent one of our worst Ph.D. weenies to the field to measure it. He screwed up somehow, and not sure we ever got a number to compare. Too bad, because that would have answered our question. Not that any of that addresses your question, but it was rather funny for those of us involved. But it does highlight that fibre is not perfect. It has dispersion and reflection problems just like coax. Immune to EMI, generates no EMI, isolates things electrically. Has some problems of its own. Almost all the vias on the PCB go to ground, but check with a meter. Solder shield (-) to the via. (Go over to Audio Circlethe pictures may help. Maybe not.) Make sense? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Digital Amps
The letter D used to designate this amplifier class is simply the next letter after C, and does not stand for Digital. Class D and Class E amplifiers are sometimes mistakenly described as digital because the output waveform superficially resembles a pulse-train of digital symbols, but a Class D amplifier merely converts an input waveform into a continuously pulse-width modulated (square wave) analog signal. (A digital waveform would be pulse-code modulated.) I have always wondered if that is why they started skipping around after that. Class T is a trademark of TriPath company, which manufactures audio amplifier ICs. This new class T is a revision of the common class D amplifier, but with changes to ensure fidelity over the full audio spectrum, unlike traditional class D designs. It operates at a frequency of 650 kHz, with a proprietary modulator. I think the future holds an amplifier that can do 500 watts, stay cool, satisfy an audiophile, and be Class A for the first 25 watts with clean Class D for the rest. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Multichannel audio on Transporter?
ianr wrote: Suggestions anyone for how to accomplish this on a reasonable (2k) budget? Is it hopeless? The pro audio world has a lot of 6 and 8 channel I/O adapters that are in your price range. I've got a couple of M-Audio Delta 1010 devices in my studio. They can drive 8 channels independently with support for 24/96. They are actually ADC and DAC combined, and for playback, you don't need the ADC side. I think you are on your own for ripping software, things like Cakewalk Sonar have all the EQ, reverb, compression, etc that anyone would want. Including using high and low pass filters to drive separate signals to separate outputs for bi-amplification, etc. I've got two of the Delta 1010s, and have heard of folks with four in a single PC. The technology and hardware are there, commercially available at your nearest Guitar Center or MusiciansFriend.com But if you look at the general problem, I think it is hopeless. Multi-channel audio hasn't standardized on simple stuff, like speaker placement, whether all speakers have to be full range, how many channels are live, etc. I have zero interest in a sonic position of inside the band/orchestra. I want second row center seats, period. SACD and DVD-Audio failed last century, there is no hope for them to get traction. While the argument has moved to DVD-HD and BlueRay, the basic problem is the same: idiotic format wars to fight the last war. Music and video delivery by small flat plastic disks is dead, the sooner content providers start understanding that 'net delivery is all that there is, the sooner we can look for higher quality and better playback. But the fundamental issue is more serious: there is no mass market for quality anymore. -- Pat Farrell http://www.pfarrell.com/ ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 Power Supply
I bought two of these for my SB3s. Neither one came with the printed circuit boards, so they had to ship those. I put the first one together last night and discovered the power cord is too big to fit through the supplied strain relief, so I went to my neighborhood hardware store and bought two that would fit. I just got the first one together, verified it was supplying 5.13V and plugged it into my SB3 in the master bedroom. This player feeds Genelec powered monitors (model 8020). As soon as I plugged in the supply the Genelecs started 'humming', most likely due to the fact that they are grounded and the Welborne supply isn't. It's odd that Welborne supplied a grounded AC cord but doesn't connect the chassis ground to anything. Is there any way to fix this? Has anyone else had a problem with these supplies?! For the price of $185 each, I am NOT impressed with what they sell! Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Welborne Power Supply for SB3
I haven't built this but I looked at what is published on Welborne's site. It looks like the entire psu including transformer is mounted on the circuit board which is isolated from the aluminum enclosure. Do you have the safety earth pin of the IEC connector referenced to the aluminum chassis? This is for your safety. The middle prong of the 3-prong IEC connector should have a short wire soldered to it, and the other end of the wire should be referenced to the chassis. You can use a captive O-ring for this and a good sized bolt with locking washers and nuts. Best to use brass which is easy to source. Desipite Welborne's recent customer service troubles, the gear is high quality. -- RioTubes RioTubes's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10172 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39715 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Welborne Power Supply for SB3
Welborn does ship a grounded AC plug/cable but doesn't use the ground. They actually state in the directions to trim it back to the strain relief and use only the HOT and NEUTRAL wires.
