Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Anyone around Manchester/Stockport with a good low-noise power supply?
Mike/Zanash , that's incredibly generous of you, but Cumbria/East Midlands is too far to ask you to travel. But I greatly appreciate the offer. The PSU I had built is RS part 173-1604 inside an old computer PSU box (which already has the IEC inlet) and connected to the original Squeezebox DC cable. I just tried plugging it in across the room and having the PSU box about 2m from the rest of the hi-fi with the Squeezebox in between. This made no difference. I'm assuming therefore (possibly falsely) that it's not the effect of having the PSU near the hi-fi that's the problem, but either the DC cable still throwing out EMI (even though it's got 2 ferrites on) or it's something that's passed down the phono connectors to the Amp. As Phil said: if the noise is being transmitted via the PSU SB phono cables amp, then maybe using a DAC (Toslinked) would break the connection. Who knows? I saw a Benchmark DAC1 on eBay today for £425 but I'm damned if I'm going to buy it just on the off chance it changes the sound to something more musical and warm. It'd pain me to go back to CDs, but at the moment the sound I get is just flat compared to the Creek. I'd still keep the Squeezebox of course, but I could put on a CD when I really want a quality sound. But that strikes me as an inconvenient workaround, not a solution. My system doesn't shout at me what the source is. The SB3 is as below. My cd player is an Arcam 93 using the Cyrus DAC. I've tried the SB3 powersupply on and off and I can't tell the difference. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Anyone around Manchester/Stockport with a good low-noise power supply?
The class A amp + speakers I have are wonderfully expressive. The amp opens up a huge soundstage with amazing detail and the speakers have tremendous range. Consequently they reveal any problems with the source. 'Like projecting a low-res image on a high definition screen' as the guy from the hi-fi shop said. He's right as well. My Turntable is bass-light and as weak as an asthmatic ant with Polio, my tuner is harsh and agressive, my DVD/CD player is light on treble and a bit muffled. I noticed this much less prior to the upgrade because my old Nad 304 amp + BW 610i speakers simply couldn't communicate any more detail than they did. The SB is easily the best of the bunch, but compared to the musicality, warmth, detail and deeper bass of the Creek classic, it's disappointing. Had I not heard just how good my amp + speakers could sound, I *might* have be happy. But I know they're being let down. Still; I'm listening to the SB as I type this, and I really would find it a bind to have to faff around with CDs again. I'd also have to burn a load of stuff that I only have on the Slimserver PC. -- chobbney chobbney's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9648 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40737 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Anyone around Manchester/Stockport with a good low-noise power supply?
chobbney;246732 Wrote: 'Like projecting a low-res image on a high definition screen' as the guy from the hi-fi shop said. For me this sums up the argument. IME it isn't like that - because everyone agrees they can see the difference between an SD and HD picture but not everyone can hear the type of differences in sources being discussed here. Maybe this is because the people who can't hear the differences don't have good hearing, or don't have good enough systems. I don't believe that myself. Your comment about the Creek having deeper bass is interesting since, as far as I can tell the SB3 bass goes down pretty low. My system (with InguzEQ) is pretty flat to e.g. 20Hz http://www.yeats.co.uk/public/Audio/fr4.jpg. The perception of bass extension is very open to state of mind. When there is a real factor, it's more about higher frequencies masking more extended bass, rather than a question of the actual presence of deeper frequencies: for me digital EQ has improved the bass 100 times more than any change in source. As you can see from my graph, massive peaks caused by a combination of room modes and non-neutrality of the speakers was masking the deeper bass without EQ. That didn't mean the SB3 / rest of system wasn't capable of producing these frequencies. They were lost in the 31.5Hz and 100Hz modes, that's all. Luckily my amp and speakers have a lot of headroom and produce high SPLs with low distortion...this means the large corrections are handled without stress. The change in sound is a revelation across the spectrum...and the graph shows it's not just in my head. Think of digital EQ as a precise, personalised crossover and it won't offend your high-end sensibilities too much :-) For me the tonality of any source (bright, warm, midrange forward) is irrelevant since I would re-run the correction measurements and get a flat-ish curve again. I am more interested in things like intelligibility of vocals, soundstage, detail etc. I find the SB3 is not wanting in these areas. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 24/96 through iTunes help
I have recently purchased a Mac Mini to serve as my slim server and have seemed to run into an issue with 24/96 files, either m4a or AIFF. First question is, do I need to use Apple formats for iTunes usage? Secondly, if so is the intel base Mac Mini just incapable of what I am trying to do? I can play the AIFF and m4a files through iTunes to my Lexicon through the Mini's digital out, but it only shows 44.1 input. I do have duplicate libraries in both Apple Lossless and FLAC and the music is stored on network storage... When you say: do I need to use Apple formats for iTunes usage, are you trying to load an iPod with iTunes? or are you just interested in slimserver usage? Like yourself, I've had problems with 24/96 files and iTunes. As a result, I'm currently storing my HiRes stuff as .wav's (I'm running XP, not a mac) and not using iTunes to index those files. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Looking for a small balanced mono amplifier...
I am thinking about getting a pair of Amphion Ion speakers for a desktop/nearfield system. I would feed them from my Transporter via my Headroom Max Balanced headphone amp, which, since it has balanced outputs, can effectively act as a preamp. The Amphion Ions need between 20-120 watts, but I guess probably 50W is probably plenty for nearfield use. What I would really like is a pair of small, balanced mono amps, no bigger than 6 square.
