[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] My suggestion to lower SB jitter
Hi, I own a SqueezeBox2 in combination with an external DAC. Recently I did a small investment to lower the SqueezeBox-2 jitter. A small Dutch company (tentlabs) sells low jitter clock upgrades for CD-players. The particular upgrade I used contains an additional reclocking circuit for the digital output (SPDIF). This circuit reduces the jitter at that output. The incoming jitter at the DAC will be lower, resulting in better sound. This upgrade can also be applied to a squeezebox. The only problem is the lack of space in the squeezebox enclosure to fit the low jitter clock print. The solution was to use an external jitter filter box (to be connected between the SB and the external dac via spdif) with enough space to include the print and to disconnect the original filter. So I only used the original enclosure, the internal power supply and digital receiver and transmitter. The actual filtering is done by the TentLabs low jitter clock print (the XO-3 print) connected to the receiver/transmitter. I used the monarchy DIP 24/96 for the enclosure (approx 200 dollar) see http://www.monarchyaudio.com/DIP.htm and the XO-DAC module from tentlabs (200 euro). See http://www.tentlabs.com/Products/DACupgrades/index.html. The results are remarkable. Better soundstaging, less fatigue listening. If you're willing to spend a few hundred euros/dollars to improve overall sound and do some hand soldering (or find someone who can do that) I highly recommend this investment. David -- David R. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] My suggestion to lower SB jitter
David - are you using Tentlink to drive the SB clock from your DAC, or are you simply reclocking the DAC SPDIF on its way to the DAC? - in which case, you really need the new clock as close as possible (ie inside) the DAC. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What a difference a DAC makes...
I recently added a Citypulse DA2.03e II to my main system. I was expecting some level improvement, but wow, I am blown away. There is a major improvement in definition and strength of the bass, and an significant improvement in overall clarity. Before adding the DAC, my system consisted of: SB3 (digital out) to DEQ2496 (analog out) to Music Angel 845 tube amp (modified). Present configuration: SB3 (digital out) to DEQ2496 (digital out) to Citypulse DAC to MA 845. I'm using the DEQ2496 for room correction and to help me tune my DIY speakers. I originally found the analog output of the DEQ2496 to be at least as good as the SB3's analog output. Speakers consist of 8 full range Fostex 206ESR's in BIB's (horns that load into the ceiling - they are huge!). I really dig these speakers, they fill the whole house with great sound, and they produce plenty deep clean bass. I went with the Citypulse because I want a remote volume control and because of its excellent reputation. -- boudy boudy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9829 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43046 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

In one of the artciles it states that the average volume of many 2007 CDs is -3db. As 3db is a barely perceptible change in loudness, that means the difference between the peak level and the average level is just that - barely perceptible. I remember Robert Fripp talking about Larks Tongues In Aspic Part 1, and how they had tried to maximise the difference between the long quiet intro and the main rock-out section for maximum impact. It paid off as the tracks is incredibly dynamic. Outrageous is more the term I would use for those prices for MP3. Good grief even iTunes isn't that expensive for whole albums. They just don't get it do they. Unfortunately shortsightedness by companies like this damages the download business model by overcharging for inferior product (i.e. MP3, not the DG catalogue itself). Daunting? You got that right. I had help and all went well. Now I'm looking to upgrade the caps. Yes, it's a ridiculous, scandalous situation. One of the worst examples is the remaster phenomenon...my experience agrees with the article in that many remasters are far worse than the original. The music business should hang its head in shame that it milks the public with this type of thing. If there's a choice of CD releases by default I buy the oldest one I can find. I have had DEQ2496 for few years now. I don't use it as I don't really have a need to EQ anything but I won't be selling it because it is a great tool for those rare occasions and for $200 worth keeping (I also have the mic). I may use it if I ever get to build a HT system. Never had any problems with it. The digital stream is very transparent. EQ quality is first rate , 48bit depth with a multiple setting memory. I have never used it as a A/D converter but as D/A works very well (uses similar to Transporter's dacs) alhough the pro output level requires attenuation. Now that I have the Transporter I would even risk a statement that they sound pretty close. It is an extremely versatile devices and I definitely recommend it. -- Kiep Kiep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8844 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42957 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
