While I agree that audiophile cables are the most shameless kind of snake oil in this industry, and I would actually expect a coat hanger to make an acceptable speaker cable (low frequency, low-Z), I certainly would not say that all cables are BS. Just try using a coat hanger for s/pdif or analog video, or using a series of coat hangers to go a longer distance for audio at RCA line or even mic level. But... good cables need not be stupidly expensive. In fact I would expect a heck of a lot more RD has gone into that popular mass produced brand, and that anything beyond that would actually be hit or miss. Indeed I have on multiple occasions encountered some very pretty looking boutique cables with significant soldering, crimping, and fit errors that you would never find on a mass produced cable. Eg RCA cables with slightly melted dielectric leading to early stress failure, optical connectors that don't mate with the proper snap, hand-made speaker wire terminations that are not as sturdy as the ones crimped or molded-on with big machines, etc. -- seanadams seanadams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44124 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Perceived loudness of the human ear is not linear, but logarithmic. Thus a doubling of loudness (+3dB) is not heard as such. 1dB used to be considered the minimum step which a normal person would hear a difference, but later research found that actually there was a range from 1dB to 3dB where people could hear a difference. I used the term 'barely perceptible' deliberately to mean a little more than 'just perceptible' in order to try and cover the range of people above. In the end a 3dB change is perceived as a very small difference in volume, no matter how sensitive your hearing. -- bigfool1956 David Ayers Music is what counts, hifi just helps us enjoy it more bigfool1956's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13782 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43045 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New setup: Passive plus amp or Active??
Hello all, my first post so please go easy on me! I have had my Squeezebox for many moons now but am looking to change my hi-fi setup. Having read the posts on this forum the idea of having active speakers with no amp appeals to me (simply because it means the hi-fi setup is neater with less kit), but I also want good quality for my money. Also, I can get a Cambridge Audio Azur 640 amp at a good price so that is something for me to consider. (Please dont suggest a different amp, it is this one or nothing, thanks). I guess a big part of this question is, at the price level I am at, are active speakers going to match the quality of passive plus amp. And the other question then is which speakers to people recommend the most (taking cost into consideration). I have been doing some searching and have listed my considerations in total cost order (taking into account amp and hi-fi stand) from low to high. Any comments are appreciated. Wharfedale Diamond 8.2 Pro Active Speakers. These are the same company as Quad, right? So are these are bargain? Audioengine 5 Active Speakers. Spoken about a lot on these forums. What is the quality like? Do they really buzz when not in use? Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 Passive speakers. Will these plus amp be better than 8.2 Active? Front firing bass port is useful as they will be fairly close to a wall. Monitor Audio BR2 Passive speakers. Slightly more expensive than 9.1s, worth it? Kef Q1 passive speakers. Again, slightly more expensive than 9.1s. Quad 11L Active Speakers. Spoken about on these forums. Are they worth the extra outlay? Are they considerably better than the 8.2s? My room is about 12 square, speakers fairly close to the rear wall but away from the sides. -- Squeeze Me Squeeze Me's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15841 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44164 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Turn Me Up!
Google around and you will find this explanation, in various wordings around the net. A change of 1dB(A) is the smallest difference one can hear within an acoustically controlled environment A change of 3dB(A) is a just noticeable change in level difference in an external environment A change of 5dB(A) is a clearly noticeable difference in level A change of 10dB(A) is heard as a doubling in loudness of the noise I liked this wording the best, even though it came from an article about the noise effects of windmills !!! Nice thing about the web, is it can be used to back up things you knew from reading real books before the web was created - yep I am that old, and I even built a set of Gilbert Briggs speakers from his book :))) Back to the main point however, does anybody really think 3dB is enough headroom for real music? No, I thought not. -- bigfool1956 David Ayers Music is what counts, hifi just helps us enjoy it more bigfool1956's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13782 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43045 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New setup: Passive plus amp or Active??
Is this a destination or a path? If you want something that is neat and you'll leave it for many years, go for the active setup. If, however, you anticipate upgrading every couple of years, then passive gives you more options. Secondly, it is easy to argue for the theoretical advantage of active speakers, but it is quite straightforward to mess up a simple active system, so it really all depends on the specific system. Thirdly, speakers are a very personal choice, so ignore anything anyone tells you, as they'll normally just be recommending what they use. Fourthly, if you can get something for a decent price then what's to lose? You can flog it on ebay if you don't like it, and it costs you little or nothing. Best way to get going IMO. With reference to my third rule, I use Wharfedale 9.1s in my computer system and they're fine, good value. You pick three other manufacturers below that which are not favourites for me. Wharfedales are decent value and easy to move on when you come to upgrade, what's not to like? You can buy cables in that category for a few dollars a foot (monoprice is a good source, or bluejeans). That fact has been born out in countless controlled listening tests. Furthermore we understand electrical circuits rather well, which allows us to predict the difference between cables based on their parameters, and we also know (at least roughly) what the thresholds of human hearing are. Putting that basic knowledge together shows that expensive cables are totally unnecessary, and that the differences people report are psychological rather than audible. -- opaqueice opaqueice's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4234 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44124 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

adamslim;275210 Wrote: Secondly, it is easy to argue for the theoretical advantage of active speakers, but it is quite straightforward to mess up a simple active system, so it really all depends on the specific system. Just oe question, what exactly do you mean when you say it is straightforward to mess up an active system. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Audiophile Deathmatch: Monster Cables vs. A Coat Hanger!
opaqueice;275219 Wrote: Now you know of one. Cables are totally irrelevant to audio performance so long as they meet certain basic performance requirements. I normally support your skepticism but this time you are turning your argument into one of those that claim accuracy without showing it, your argument is like measurement data, irrelevant to my ears, however, this time its totally unfounded and non scientific which makes it even more worthless and with this you tell a lot of your insecurities and most importantly that you care about cables. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] CD Player as DAC recommendation?
These posts have got me thinking. Now I'll have to drag my feels like ~100lb computer downstairs and see how my SB3 sounds going through my SB Audigy 4 setup. Hum, SB3 to SB4.. This Cirrus Logic CS4398Â DAC upsamples to 192KHz with a S/N ratio of something like 120DB. -- NoFlyZone NoFlyZone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15336 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42020 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Linear PSU in stock at Farnell (UK)
I'm on my second PSU from Farnell: http://cpc.farnell.com/PW00187/batteries-power-supplies/product.us0?sku=UNBRANDED-AD-05150R_requestid=142966 The first one was duff from the word go; SB kept shutting down. The replacement has lasted about 2 months: a few days ago the SB display started flickering badly, then the unit kept restarting after a minute or so of playing. So I've gone back to the wall wart - display now OK, and the unit plays for hours. To be totally honest, I can't actually discern any audible difference between the wall wart and the (working) linear. So I'm not bothering with a replacement from Farnell. But - I may have just been unlucky with the PSUs I got. I know others here use them successfully . . . . -- morris_minor morris_minor's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13950 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21550 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] BW 802D Speakers. Tempted.
Not much to add here as this is such a subjective question. I'll be asking the same as my current setup is laughable. NuForce 9's SE V2 running into Def Tech BP2000's using my Modded SB3. OK laugh. Still, it sounds great and from the great number of auditions I've been through trying to sort out the speakers with the associated electronics - and for ~$10K, Vandersteen would probably top the list. I really liked the pair of Wilson Sophia's for pulling the disappearing act.. For myself, I'm might build a pair of Line Arrays from either GR-Reasearch or Selah audio for 1/4 the price! -- NoFlyZone NoFlyZone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15336 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42808 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Robin Bowes;275248 Wrote: The point is that not all cables/amps *do* meet those basic performance requirements, so the conditional clause in your statement is highly significant. It is therefore meaningless, and verging on ridiculous to make such statements making out that all cables (or amps) are the same. If you can buy cables for $s/foot which meet those minimum requirements (and you can, easily), my statement is quite meaningful and quite important (since all audiophile cables sell for far, far more than that). The real problem is that the debate has become politicized, I suppose because cable manufacturers are for-profit, and because of the pride and status-consciousness of their customers. That makes it hard to have a calm and reasoned discussion, but regardless the facts are the facts. I'm not sure what you're talking about. Most of my cables are from Radio Shack, although I do have an old pair of Monsters and some bluejeans and monoprices as well. I care about cables in so far as they matter (not much) and as a fascinating economic/sociological phenomenon. -- opaqueice opaqueice's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4234 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44124 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Q:Best BUDGET power or integrated AMP (under$1000)
OK. Kind of confused. It seems like NAD has taken the product page for the C352 amp off their website. Here's the link I had bookmarked: http://nadelectronics.com/products/hifi-amplifiers/C352-Stereo-Integrated-Amplifier In its place is what appears to be a new integrated amp: the C355BEE. http://nadelectronics.com/products/hifi_amplifiers/C355BEE-Stereo-Integrated-Amplifier/ Based on my read of the product overview, it sounds like the C355BEE is the latest rendition of the 352. During a recent product audition, my sales rep verified that the 352 was not going to be replaced anytime soon.
